Millions of Americans lost their jobs, their homes, their savings and their hope for the future

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS

A Growing Outrage

politico.com — The "Masters of the Universe" on Wall Street — through their greed, recklessness and illegal behavior — have plunged this country and much of the world into a deep recession, causing millions of Americans to lose their jobs, their homes, their savings and their hope for the future.

No Return to Normal

James K. Galbraith, Washington Monthly: "Barack Obama's presidency began in hope and goodwill, but its test will be its success or failure on the economics. Did the president and his team correctly diagnose the problem? Did they act with sufficient imagination and force? And did they prevail against the political obstacles - and not only that, but also against the procedures and the habits of thought to which official Washington is addicted? The president has an economic program. But there is, so far, no clear statement of the thinking behind that program, and there may not be one, until the first report of the new Council of Economic Advisers appears next year."

Crowborough: A war of masts

Friday, March 20, 2009, 12:00

RESIDENTS filled the Crowborough council offices for a Wealden District Council planning meeting last week to find out if a mobile phone mast was to be built near their homes and schools.

It's not often that an issue draws so much interest from the community, but applications by telecommunications giant Vodafone have resulted in the formation of several pressure groups.

One town, four potential mast sites. But what effect does this modern day issue have on a town like Crowborough? Do phone masts bring residents together or push them apart?

WHEN two mobile phone mast applications were lodged by Vodafone last year the Crowborough school community banded together in a concerted effort to oppose them.

In an unprecedented move, Vodafone met with school representatives to consider two new locations, despite having received planning permission for both previous sites.

Hope of resolution in phone mast row

RODDY ASHWORTH

Last updated: 20.03.2009 08:45:00

NEGOTIATIONS to relocate a controversial mobile phone mast in an Essex town have taken a step forward.

A barrage of complaints and objections were received by Colchester Borough Council when telecoms company O2 applied to erect the mast in Norman Way, Lexden.

As a result, the authority's planning committee refused to allow it to be built at the site, which is close to St Mary's School, Colchester County High School for Girls and St Benedict's College.

But due to an administrative error the council's refusal came too late and missed the legal deadline, meaning O2 were automatically given permission to go ahead.

Exclusive By Wendy Brading

A SOLUTION may have been found to the on-going dispute over Lexden's controversial phone mast.

Residents were furious after phone company O2 was allowed to put up a mast at the junction of Lexden Road and Norman Way because Colchester Council had not made a decision in time.

The invasion of Iraq was clearly an illegal act of aggression

A war resister speaks from prison

Common Dreams
by Robin Long

03/19/09

The invasion of Iraq was clearly an illegal act of aggression. The U.S. was not under attack or the imminent threat of attack from the nation of Iraq. The action was also not approved by the U.N. Security Council. By taking this stance, the Conservative government is condoning the invasion and continuing occupation of Iraq. Is this what Canadians want? A majority of Americans want it to end and have also realized it to be a mistake. Canadians have long known it to be wrong. Why is the minority Conservative government still holding onto the idea and still deporting war resisters? Why are they separating families and being complicit in the incarceration of morally strong young men and women? What message is this sending?

A great debate on Afghanistan

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

03/19/09

Since the debate will be posted online, I won’t go into the details of how things transpired. For me, one of the most fascinating parts of the debate occurred near the end. Throughout the debate Boot had chided me for describing the U.S. government’s foreign policy of empire and interventionism as ‘morally degenerate,’ a term that he continued to mock. As the debate was drawing to an end, I pointed out that one of the reasons that Boot and other pro-war supporters felt the Iraq occupation has been a success is been the fact that ‘only’ a few thousands American soldiers have been killed...

Against surge logic

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

03/19/09

Today, the conventional wisdom in the United States is that the so-called ’surge’ in Iraq has been a stunning success, and its critics have been discredited. That’s why surgeniks Max Boot, Frederick Kagan, and Kimberly Kagan can smugly write in the March 13 New York Times things like, ‘Make no mistake: there is hard, costly fighting ahead in Afghanistan. But the fight is worth pursuing, and the odds of success are much better than they were in Iraq when we launched the forlorn hope known as the surge.’ At the same time, the conventional wisdom in the United States also holds that the situation in Afghanistan has become quite dire. … Even more, the conventional wisdom is that the situation has become dire in large part because we’ve barely been trying in Afghanistan. As the three write, ‘The main challenge is to overcome years of chronic neglect in terms of economic development, government services and above all security, which has allowed the insurgency free access to large swaths of the country.’ I’m not accustomed to agreeing with this neocon troika, but they are exactly right to finger neglect as a key culprit. Which leads, naturally, to the question: Neglect by whom?

If you’re a little guy, a contract means nothing

TruthDig
by Marie Cocco

03/19/09

With due deference to George Orwell, all contracts are equal. But some contracts are more equal than others. Contracts entered into by the hotshots at American International Group for $165 million in bonuses, signed just months before their web of financial cunning unraveled, are inviolate. Contracts entered into by shop-floor workers at auto plants must be renegotiated, so that the taxpayers who bail out the industry don’t coddle supposedly overpaid union members...

03/19/09

Look how we are constantly being told we ‘need Geithner’ to unwind the economic mess. We ‘need’ the AIG traders to help unwind the credit derivatives and swaps that are strangling the world’s biggest insurer. They invented this garbage that is causing this economic meltdown. Why do they deserve a penny, let alone another millisecond on the job? These are the same geniuses who put the banks, AIG, and ultimately, the economy in the current economic tsunami. I say get rid of them all. Anyone who was involved prior to the meltdown should go away...

A government of men, not laws

In These Times
by David Sirota

03/20/09

United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard likes to say that Washington policymakers ‘treat the people who take a shower after work much differently than they treat the people who shower before they go to work.’ … Following news that government-owned American International Group (AIG) devoted $165 million of its $170 billion taxpayer bailout to employee bonuses, the White House insisted nothing could be done to halt the robbery. On ABC’s Sunday chat show, Obama adviser Larry Summers couched his passive-aggressive defense of AIG’s thieves in the saccharine argot of jurisprudence. ‘We are a country of law — there are contracts (and) the government cannot just abrogate contracts,’ he said. The rhetoric echoed John Adams’ two-century-old fairy tale about an impartial ‘government of laws, and not of men.’ Only now, the reassuring platitudes can’t hide the uncomfortable truth...

Doch in Deutschland bleibt alles recht friedlich.

Who owns the water?

Who Owns Colorado's Rainwater?

Nicholas Riccardi, The Los Angeles Times: "Every time it rains here, Kris Holstrom knowingly breaks the law. Holstrom's violation is the fancifully painted 55-gallon buckets underneath the gutters of her farmhouse on a mesa 15 miles from the resort town of Telluride. The barrels catch rain and snowmelt, which Holstrom uses to irrigate the small vegetable garden she and her husband maintain. But according to the state of Colorado, the rain that falls on Holstrom's property is not hers to keep."

States, Not Washington, D.C., Need Our Attention

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

If there is any hope for lovers of freedom in this country, it will be found in individual States that are willing to shake off the filthy dust that has floated down from that putrid landfill on the banks of the Potomac, and stand up for freedom and independence the way Americans used to. And if the State we live in won't do it, we might want to consider moving to one that will, because if we lose our liberties, it will be our own individual State that will have run up the white flag........

Parents urged to oppose phone mast plan

RUSSELL CLAYDON

Last updated: 20.03.2009 06:00:00

HOMEOWNERS and parents are being urged to oppose plans to put a mobile phone mast close to a children's play area.

Planners will meet next month to decide if O2 should be allowed to build a mast just 150 yards from Alexandra Park in east Ipswich.

A councillor is urging residents to object due to health concerns, as well as its visual impact and has already heard back from two worried residents.

Ipswich Borough Council's planning committee will meet on April 1 to make a decision on the Grove Lane application.

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "Six years ago, the United States of America began the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Since then, 4,259 American soldiers have been killed and tens of thousands more have been wounded. There is no accurate accounting of Iraqi dead and wounded, because as we were told, we do not do body counts. Because the Bush administration left its Iraq expenditures off the budget, and because of the tremendous amount of war-profiteering, graft and theft that has been involved, we do not know exactly how much we have spent. For the record, 2,192 days later, this is how we got here."

Restoring our Financial Sovereignty

A New Monetary System

By Nikki Alexander

Today the nation is essentially bankrupt and hoping Barack Obama's team of Wall Street advisors will forestall economic collapse. This expectation is equivalent to hoping that Al Capone will make our streets safe. Obama's economic recovery team is a Trojan horse filled with the same Wall Street racketeers that infected the global economy with a quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble, using deliberately deregulated mechanisms.

The "Card Check" Hullabaloo

By Mike Whitney

Big business has launched a no-holds-barred propaganda blitz against the Employee Free Choice Act. Their goal is to scare people into believing that if the bill passes it will trigger higher unemployment and a deeper recession. According to opponents, there's even the threat of creeping socialism. The truth, of course, is far less dramatic. The Employee Free Choice Act or so called "card check" simply makes it easier for unions to organize.

Register Nelson's meeting spot to get 41ft mast

19 March 2009

By Ruth Scammell

Plans for a phone mast at a site where Nelson is rumoured to have met his lover for romantic trysts have been given the green light. Councillors yesterday allowed mobile phone giant O2 to put a mast up in the garden of Town Quay House in Gosport Road, Fareham.

Lady Hamilton is believed to have once lived at the house, and she is also said to have looked out across Fareham Creek for the mast of Nelson's ship when he returned.

But residents have raised concerns over the appearance of the 41ft mast, and the health risks from radiation waves.

Councillor Dennis Steadman said: 'I'm very disappointed. It's going to be so intrusive for people who live there.

The biting winds of change are blowing through Obama Nation

This is the Army, Mrs. Jones!

Canada Free Press
by Judi McLeod

03/16/09

The biting winds of change are blowing through ObamaNation. The same ‘volunteerism’ that kept America running since the days of its founding, wiped out with the stroke of a pen, will no longer be volunteerism. It becomes forced labor and like the practice of another era, presses American citizens of all ages and creeds, unknowingly into military service. On paper, H.R. 1388 is the ‘Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act;’ the more innocuous sounding ‘The Give Act,’ for short. But ‘The Give Act’ is not part of Obama’s distant future for unsuspecting American citizens, because it hits the House floor tomorrow. … ‘The Give Act’ puts tow-headed school children and silver-haired seniors in the official uniform of the new State, and encompasses every walk of life in main-street America...

Afghanistan: US readies civilian “surge”

Top aides to President Barack Obama are recommending that the United States combine a boost in military deployments with a steep increase in civilian experts to combat a growing insurgency in Afghanistan, senior U.S. officials said Wednesday. Several hundred civilians from various U.S. government agencies — from agronomists to economists and legal experts — will be deployed to Afghanistan to reinforce the nonmilitary component in Kabul and the existing provincial reconstruction teams in the countryside, officials said...

The Real AIG Scandal

Perp walks, not bonuses

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

03/18/09

There must be a criminal investigation of the AIG debacle, and it looks as if New York’s top lawman is on the case. The collusion to save this toxic company in order to salvage the rogue financiers who conspired to enrich themselves by impoverishing millions is being revealed as the greatest financial scandal in US history. Instead of taking bonuses, the culprits should be taking perp walks. I’m not just referring to the swindlers in the Financial Products Subsidiary of AIG who devised and sold those insurance policies on derivatives that brought the world economy to its knees. They do seem deserving of a special place in h..., and presumably the same divine power that according to Scripture labeled usury a high moral crime and threw the money-changers out of the temple will consider that outcome...

Government could’ve easily prevented AIG bonuses

Fox News Forum

by Ken Klukowski

03/18/09

The debacle over the AIG bonuses proves that opponents of the bailouts were on to something. There are at least three ways the federal government could have avoided this debacle, and now taxpayers are stuck with the bill. Insurance giant AIG is paying $165 million in performance bonuses (a stunning thought, given the circumstances). AIG says that these are legally binding contracts, so it has no choice but to pay them. Since AIG is living off government money right now, these bonuses are really being paid directly by American taxpayers. The reaction from our leaders in D.C. has been to howl in protest, and then suggest this could not have been prevented. Wrong. First, if AIG had been forced into bankruptcy, this latest outrage would not have happened...

The real AIG conspiracy

CounterPunch
by Michael Hudson

03/18/09

Regarding qui bono, what does Sen. Schumer, Rep. Frank, Pres. Obama and other Wall Street sponsors gain from this public outcry? For starters, it depicts them as hard taskmasters of the banking and financial sector, not its lobbyists scurrying to execute one giveaway after another. So the AIG kerfuffle has muddied the water about where their political loyalties really lie. It enables them to strike a misleading pose — and hence to pose as ‘honest brokers’ next time they dishonestly give away the next few trillion dollars to their major sponsors and campaign contributors...

AIG: Sinking money in a hole

Economics Junkie
by Nima

03/17/09

It’s time for our dear politicians to act surprised again. It’s time for Congress again to complain about the results of false policies that they themselves recklessly approved, against all warnings. It’s time again for Ben Bernanke to fire off mindless blather, platitudes and predictions that will, as always and without exception, turn out to be abysmally false. The AP has a shocking surprise for us, Taxpayers unlikely to be fully repaid in AIG mess …. Of course the taxpayer won’t get any of this money back. Is there a living creature with more than one brain cell that seriously expected the taxpayer would ever see this money come back?

How the scam works

CounterPunch
by Michael Hudson

03/29/09

Newspaper reports seem surprised at how high banks are bidding for the junk mortgages that Treasury Secretary Geithner is now bidding for, having mobilized the FDIC and Fed to transfer yet more public funds to the banks. Bank stocks are soaring — thereby bidding up the Dow Jones Industrial Average, as if the ‘financial industry’ really were part of the industrial economy. Why are the very worst offenders — Bank of America (now owner of the Countrywide crooks) and Citibank the largest buyers? As the worst abusers and packagers of CDOs, shouldn’t they be in the best position to see how worthless their junk mortgages are?
