The Salary for Failure

Philippe Escande, Les Echos: "What's the salary for failure? Five hundred thousand dollars, answers Barack Obama. That's still a lot of money, all the same, but apparently it is only a tenth of the annual emolument for a big banking boss, such as Citigroup's CEO. So it's a form of divine punishment the very Protestant president of the Republic wants to inflict on those miscreants of finance who have still not understood that the party is over. Or who, perhaps, understanding that it is winding up, are attempting to glean some last few crumbs before making their final bow."

Dean Baker, The Center for Economic and Policy Research: "The January employment report showed the economy losing 598,000 jobs in the month. In addition, there were sharp upward revisions to the job loss figures for the prior two months.

Atom-Beschluss in Schweden

Cancer couple claim victory as mast removed

Friday, February 06, 2009, 12:00

Jon Bennett

A CROWBOROUGH couple who claim a mobile phone mast next to their house gave them both breast cancer have described its removal as "the end of a nightmare".

Margaret and George King, of Church Road, Crowborough, saw the mast come down at the end of last week after a prolonged campaign to see it removed.

The couple, who have both had mastectomies and have blamed the Vodafone mast next to their house, have described their relief.

Speaking on Thursday last week as the mast was removed, Mr King, 77, said of the workmen sent to remove it: "I could have hugged those guys this morning, when I saw them cutting up the mast. In our dreams we wanted to do it ourselves."

The event marks the end of an 11-year ordeal for the couple, who moved into their current home for their retirement.

Watchdogs: Government Overpaid for Wall Street Assets

Kevin G. Hall and Greg Gordon, McClatchy Newspapers: "The federal government overpaid by about $78 billion for stock and other troubled assets when it bailed out big banks last year, and it lacks sufficient internal controls to police and protect taxpayers' investment in the institutions, government watchdogs said Thursday. The new special inspector general for the bailout effort, formally called the Troubled Asset Relief Program, issued his first report Thursday and said that the Treasury Department needs to put more safeguards in place to protect taxpayers."

Support Finnish NGOs in Their Fight for Lapland's Ancient Forests

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

By Ecological Internet's Forests.org project http://forests.org/ February 5, 2009

TAKE ACTION HERE NOW: http://forests.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=finland_lapland_forests

Protest Finnish timber giant Stora Enso and the government profiting from destroying Finland's last ancient forests. Let them know Finland and the World's old-growth must be protected and restored to sustain the Earth's biosphere and ecosystem processes including climate, water and biodiversity.

BRIEF BACKGROUND: The last unprotected intact forest landscapes in Northern Finland are currently being destroyed by the Finnish government and timber industry. Low-productive old-growth boreal forests located hundreds of kilometres north from the Polar Circle are being logged systematically. Trees more than 300 years old are mainly ending up in pulp wood piles of timber giant Stora Enso. Only less than 5% of Finnish forests have remained untouched by modern forestry. Please, help Finnish NGOs to save Finland’s natural treasures and to put international pressure on their destructive forest industry.

This is the latest protest in Ecological Internet's global campaign to protect all remaining old growth forests, and promote regeneration and restoration of secondary forests to late successional old-growth status. Increasing old forest cover globally is critical for achieving global ecological sustainability -- including climate, water and biodiversity.

FOREST RELEASE: World Outraged by Finland's Continued Old Growth Logging

Colleagues,

Here is the press release regarding our campaign to end Finland's ancient forest logging shame. We will now routinely send both the alert and release to this list in the hopes that more people will choose to participate in the protest, and hoping you network this to media and blogging colleagues. Please send this vital alert if you have not yet done so. If successful it will set an important precedent that old growth logging is finished.

Regards,
Dr. Glen Barry

PRESS/SOCIAL MEDIA RELEASE World Outraged by Finland's Continued Old Growth Logging

- Supposedly "Green" Finland's unprotected intact old growth forest landscapes, including 300 year old trees in Northern Forest Lapland, continue to be destroyed to make throw-away paper products

February 10, 2009 By Earth's Newsdesk, a project of Ecological Internet http://www.ecoearth.info/newsdesk/ CONTACT: Dr. Glen Barry, glenbarry@ecologicalinternet.org

(Seattle, WA) -- Finland's last unprotected intact old growth forest landscapes continue to be destroyed by the Finnish government and timber industry. Trees more than 300 years old are being industrially destroyed by the government's logging body Metsähallitus, ending up in timber giant Stora Enso's pulp wood piles. Less than 5% of Finnish forests have remained untouched by modern forestry.

Ecological Internet's Earth Action Network is supporting Finnish NGO demands that Northern Forest Lapland's natural treasures are fully protected. Some 1,630 people from 66 countries have sent 345,578 emails in a peaceful protest intended to put international pressure on the Finnish government and Stora Enso [1].

"There are too few large, connected and relatively intact terrestrial ecosystem habitats globally to sustain the Earth system," explains global forest protection expert Dr. Glen Barry. "Finland and the World's old-growth must be strictly protected and restored to sustain the Earth's biosphere and ecosystem processes including climate, water and biodiversity upon which all life depends."

Regarding Stora Enso's response to the protest, Finnish forest policy observer Olli Manninen notes "Stora Enso admits buying wood from old growth and virgin forests and is committed to doing so in the future. And Metsähallitus definitely has further plans to log these areas, some being already marked for logging. It is deeply troubling that Stora Enso claims wood from Forest Lapland's old- growth destruction fulfills the Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) requirements."

Finnish old-growth forest destruction today is totally unnecessary. Finland is a rich industrialized country with no economic need to log the remains of its old- growth forests. Low-productive old-growth boreal forests located hundreds of kilometres north from the Polar Circle are being logged systematically and indiscriminately, yet provide less that 0.1% of the industry's wood supply.

This is the latest protest in Ecological Internet's global campaign to protect all remaining ancient primary and old growth forests, and promote regeneration and restoration of secondary forests to late successional old-growth status. Increasing old forest cover globally is critical for achieving global ecological sustainability.

Southport residents and businesses are going up against mobile phone giant Vodafone to block plans for a mast in their neighbourhood

Feb 6 2009

by Janine Yaqoob, Southport Visiter

SOUTHPORT residents and businesses are going up against a mobile phone giant in an bid to block plans for a mast in their neighbourhood.

Vodafone Ltd has submitted a planning proposal to build a 12m telecommunications mast on the corner of Manchester Road and Zetland Street.

A 75-signature petition opposing the application has been submitted to Sefton Council ahead of the planning committee meeting on Wednesday.

Reasons cited for objecting the mast include health issues and the “unsightly” appearance of the mast having a negative effect on the area.

Esther Edmondson, who lives on Zetland Street, has signed the petition.

She said: “Many residents on this street and local businesses do not want this mast near our homes and shops.

“Manchester Road is used by many people and this mast would make the area look unattractive.

“We are also worried about the health implications the mast might bring, such as the increased risk of cancer.”

How the stimulus screws commuters

The American Prospect
by Ryan Avent

02/05/09

The American public is currently focused like a laser on the nation’s economic struggles, to the exclusion of all else. That’s perfectly understandable; livelihoods are at stake, and the situation is grim. But behind this economic crisis lurks the continued threat posed by global climate change. Eight years of delay has made the situation urgent, and while public opinion clearly indicates that economic recovery should come first, any opportunity to address both problems at once — to both support the economy while reducing emissions growth — must be seized. But as stimulus legislation has progressed through the Congress it has become increasingly clear that the environmental failures in the bill are also economic failures. In making the stimulus dirtier, we’re also making it worse...

Obama: Incompetence or redemption?

Biden, Richardson, Geithner, Killefer, Daschle. As Obama continues to pick his disciples, the ‘Peter Ratio’ (the ratio of those who embarrass themselves to those who don’t) grows. ‘President’ = ‘Executive Branch Manager.’ We just lived through eight years of Bushian managerial incompetence. Now it looks like we’re in for another four. Or more. (What was it we heard about McCain being a third Bush term?)

Do Americans Cherish Freedom Anymore?

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

I am often guilty of using the term "freedom-loving Americans." But I think the question now needs to be asked, Do Americans really cherish freedom anymore? I believe an argument could be made that not many do. In fact, I doubt that most Americans today remotely understand what freedom--as envisioned by our Founding Fathers--even is. Freedom is......

In Updike’s America, are we still running from responsibility?
Christian Science Monitor

by Tom Ragan

02/06/09

While no death should be fitting, the passing of acclaimed writer John Updike last week seemed sadly scripted. The man who chronicled suburban America’s constant dilemma between duty and desire left us just as we’re coming to grips with the consequences of running from responsibility. Today, as the country tries to cope with vanishing jobs and declining confidence, some are dusting off the work of 20th-century economist John Maynard Keynes. We’d be better served by reading Mr. Updike’s 1960 novel, Rabbit, Run. A trillion-dollar stimulus may or may not dig us out of our dire straits. But this much is certain: Only if we face up to our obsession with instant gratification and the temptation to flee when times get tough can we begin to heal our national soul. If a plane safely crash-landing into the Hudson River can serve as a metaphor to something finally going right in America, then reading Updike is a sorry reminder of how good it used to be...

Town council backs phone masts

Last updated 19:31, Thursday, 05 February 2009

THREE Vodafone mobile phone masts planned for Workington have won the backing of the town council, despite 71 objections from residents.

Workington Town Council, which was consulted on the plans by Allerdale council, has recommended that plans should be approved.

Plans include a 40ft mast to be erected in the car park of the Travellers’ Rest, a 40ft mast on Salterbeck Road and a 55ft mast installed behind the TA Centre on Harrington Road.

Phil Cram, 61, of Ashfield Gardens, who lives 50 feet from the proposed mast site at the Travellers’ Rest, collected 50 signatures on a petition against the mast.

He said: “I am very disappointed that Workington council has recommended approval. If they had been on a site visit they would have a different perspective on the application.”

Residents felt that the mast would be a visual intrusion, reduce the value of property and pose a risk to their health.

Runaway Wall Street

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: "It is instructional that only one of the three tax-challenged Obama appointees has survived public scorn to claim a high position in the new administration. Oddly enough, it is Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, the man who will collect our taxes, whose career has not been stunted by his failure to pay them. What makes Geithner so special? The answer, provided by everyone from the president to the media pundits, is that his services are indispensable because he has the expertise in regulating markets needed to preside over the most massive government intervention in the economy. Are they kidding?"

Afghanistan: Losing a No-Win War

Steve Weissman, Truthout: "I could go on, but it all boils down to the one lesson of Vietnam that Robert Gates and his Pentagon brass do not want to accept - that Afghans, Pakistanis, Iraqis and other people in Asia, Africa and Latin America will no longer accept the United States and Europe occupying and running their countries. Counter-insurgency can prolong the pain, but it will never overcome the anti-colonial dynamic, as the British Empire, the French Empire and others all learned before us."

Whistling Past the Afghan Graveyard: Where Empires Go to Die

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "It is now a commonplace - as a lead article in the New York Times's Week in Review pointed out recently - that Afghanistan is 'the graveyard of empires.'... Far less attention has been paid to the 'empire' part of the equation. And there's a good reason for that - at least in Washington. Despite escalating worries about the deteriorating situation, no one in our nation's capital is ready to believe that Afghanistan could actually be the 'graveyard' for the American role as the dominant hegemon on this planet."

The new era of irresponsibility

Reason
by Jacob Sullum

02/04/09

Last October, while campaigning in Toledo, Barack Obama called for ‘a new ethic of responsibility.’ The nation’s economic troubles, he said, occurred partly because ‘everyone was living beyond their means,’ including politicians who ’spent money they didn’t have.’ In his inaugural address last month, Obama regretted ‘our collective failure to make hard choices’ and heralded ‘a new era of responsibility.’ Now President Obama, as one of his first priorities, is pushing a gargantuan ’stimulus’ plan that will add around $1 trillion to the national debt and cannot possibly work as advertised. Welcome to the new era of responsibility...

Stimulus package will increase unemployment

Fox News
by John R. Lott, Jr.

02/03/09

President Obama and the Democrats’ ’stimulus’ package will increase the unemployment rate. The changes they propose will also make us poorer, with fewer, less productive jobs. The most obvious explanation is the $36 billion in increased unemployment insurance benefits. Larger benefits at least for this year will encourage some people, who may be unhappy with their jobs, to be unemployed while they look for something better. … Yet the ’stimulus’ package will do something else that will increase unemployment at least as much. Most of the new jobs will be for people who are currently employed. By moving money from places where it is currently being spent to places where the government wants it spent, you move the jobs also. But it takes time for people to move between jobs. That is called unemployment...

The pseudo stimulus

The Nation

So now that President Obama is in office, his economic team is in place, the largest stimulus package in US history is nearly complete, real interest rates are negative and the Treasury is about to announce a “big bang” version of TARP that provides even more capital to private banks, we’re good, right? Lo siento, no, as shown by last week’s steep stock market slide, even after his program passed the House. For once, the Republican wingnuts may be right. There really is much less to Obama’s stimulus than meets the eye...

Brother, can you spare a bonus?

Yes indeed, the Wall Street life ain’t easy these days. Of course, for any bankers freaking out about the new rules that President Barack Obama announced Wednesday, which cap pay at $500,000 for firms that take federal aid to stay in business, there is one easy way to keep rolling in the dough: Don’t run your company into the ground so quickly that the only way to survive is to get on the dole. The new rules apply only to firms that take part in future bailouts; without federal aid, there are no strings attached. But administration officials, and Obama, seemed resigned to the fact that the $700 billion already spent to rescue Wall Street won’t be the last of it, and that the rules will probably be applied fairly soon. Cracking down on runaway salaries, in fact, seems to be an attempt to smooth the political path for the next round of bailouts...

Change (In Rhetoric) We Can Believe In

By William Blum

The Obama administration will not produce any significantly worthwhile change in US foreign policy; little done in this area will reduce the level of misery that the American Empire regularly brings down upon humanity. And to the extent that Barack Obama is willing to clearly reveal what he believes about anything controversial, he appears to believe in the empire.

The War on Terror is a Hoax

By Paul Craig Roberts

According to US government propaganda, terrorist cells are spread throughout America, making it necessary for the government to spy on all Americans and violate most other constitutional protections. Among President Bush's last words as he left office was the warning that America would soon be struck again by Muslim terrorists.

Pentagon pick shows challenges of Obama's ethics rules

The man President Obama nominated to become the No. 2 manager at the Pentagon isn't the first person for that job to come from the defense industry. But Mr. Obama's own executive order on ethics has now become a stumbling block as the White House seeks to push the former lobbyist through confirmation.

Tennessee Coal Ash Disaster Raises Concerns About Similar Sites Nationwide

Tom Bearden, PBS NewsHour: "Even today, it's difficult for anybody who hasn't been to Kingston, Tennessee, to understand how big the problem is. Video just doesn't do it justice. In the pre-dawn hours of December 22, 5.4 million tons of ashes created by 50 years of burning coal to generate electricity here burst through a dike, spreading like an avalanche for more than a mile, burying 300 acres of riverbank several feet deep, spilling out into the nearby river itself."

SEC's Madoff Miss Fits Pattern Set With Pequot

Gary J. Aguirre, Bloomberg: "Errant Wall Street elite, such as Madoff, go up against the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Congress created the SEC in 1934 after Wall Street titans -- the Madoffs of 1929 --took the capital markets over a cliff with the economy in tow. The SEC was supposed to keep a watchful eye on Wall Street, especially its elite. So far, the SEC's six investigations of Madoff read more like Keystone Cops than Sherlock Holmes. The SEC didn't merely fail to spot and connect the clues. Someone else -- Harry Markopolos, a former money manager - did that work for it."
