Speak Out for Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs

Black-tailed prairie dogs were once abundant across the Great Plains, from Canada to Mexico. But after decades of habitat loss, poisonings and disease, these furry creatures have declined more than 95% in the last 150 years -- and are gone completely in large parts of their range.

Now, federal officials are considering protection for the black-tailed prairie dog under the Endangered Species Act as a terrible plague continues to wipe out vast numbers of the remaining prairie dog colonies, and as federal agencies continue to poison prairie dog colonies on our public lands..

Urge federal officials to protect black-tailed prairie dogs -- and the health of the Great Plains. Hurry -- the deadline for comments is Tuesday, February 2nd.

A Long-Lived Privilege?

Economy: Sharpest Decline in 26 Years

Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com: "The US economy suffered its biggest slowdown in 26 years in the last three months of 2008, according to the government's first reading about the fourth quarter released Friday. Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the nation's economic activity, fell at an annual rate of 3.8 percent in the fourth quarter, adjusted for inflation."

Economy Goes From Bad to Worse

latimes.com — The bad economic news keeps piling up. Three milestones showing the depths of the downturn were reached: The number of workers filing unemployment claims hit an all-time high, sales of new homes fell to an all-time low, and production of durable goods dropped for the fifth straight month, boosting inventories to their highest level since at least 1992. And it's not over yet. The Commerce Department is scheduled to release its initial estimate of the U.S. gross domestic product — the value of all goods and services produced by the economy — for the fourth quarter of 2008. The report will essentially wrap into one sobering number all the grim developments that have been accumulating for weeks and months.

BGH-Präsident kritisiert "Deals" in Strafprozessen

Uproar as mast given go-ahead

By Roisin McGroarty

THE green-light has been given for a phone mast to be installed in Holmston despite locals warning that it’s a “health hazard.”

Councillors have decided on placing the 12 metre pole next to homes and Kyle Academy at the north side of Holmston Road with promises that will boost the area’s broadband and mobile phone signals.

Several residents had objected about the visual aspects and safety implications of Vodafone’s mast on council grounds with several attending last Thursday’s regulatory panel in protest.

Obama Calls Wall Street Bonuses "Shameful" as Dodd Vows to Reclaim Money

Dawn Kopecki and Julianna Goldman, Bloomberg: "President Barack Obama fed a swelling populist revolt against Wall Street bonuses, calling it 'shameful' that banks doled out $18.4 billion as taxpayers bail out companies and the U.S. remains mired in a recession. The bonuses are 'the height of irresponsibility,' Obama said today before meeting Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. Firms need to 'show some restraint and show some discipline,' Obama said."

The big stimulus

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

01/30/09

Putting aside Bizarro economics, for now, and my wholesale rejection of same, there is one way we can stimulate the economy with a mighty injection of cash into the hands of one and all. No, not another government subsidy, but the cutting of the single largest federal expenditure down to a manageable size: the U.S. military budget. Larger than all the other ‘defense’ budgets in the world combined, this unimaginable sum is not even known, for sure, but of one thing we can be certain: the hidden costs are much more than anyone suspects...

$646,214 per government job

Cato Institute
by Alan Reynolds

01/29/09

House Democrats propose to spend $550 billion of their two-year, $825 billion ’stimulus bill’ (the rest of it being tax cuts). Most of the spending is unlikely to be timely or temporary. Strangely, most of it is targeted toward sectors of the economy where unemployment is the lowest. The December unemployment rate was only 2.3% for government workers and 3.8% in education and health. Unemployment rates in manufacturing and construction, by contrast, were 8.3% and 15.2% respectively. Yet 39% of the $550 billion in the bill would go to state and local governments. Another 17.3% would go to health and education — sectors where relatively secure government jobs are also prevalent. If the intent of the plan is to alleviate unemployment, why spend over half of the money on sectors where unemployment is lowest?

Obama: Trilateral Commission Endgame

by Patrick Wood

In short, Obama is merely the continuation of disastrous, non-American policies that have brought economic ruin upon us and the rest of the world. The Obama experience rivals that of Jimmy Carter, whose campaign slogan was "I will never lie to you." When the Democrat base finally realizes that it has been conned again, perhaps it will unleash a real political revolution that will oust Trilateral politicians, operatives and policies from the shores of our country.......

Behind the Executive Orders

Jane Mayer, The New Yorker: "On Thursday, President Barack Obama consigned to history the worst excesses of the Bush Administration's 'war on terror.' One of the four executive orders that Obama signed effectively cancelled seven years of controversial Justice Department legal opinions authorizing methods of treating terror suspects so brutal that even a top Bush administration official overseeing prosecutions at Guantanamo, Susan Crawford, recently admitted that they amounted to torture. According to some of those opinions, many of which remain classified, President Bush could authorize US officials to capture, interrogate, and indefinitely imprison terror suspects all around the globe, outside of any legal process."

Iraq, Afghanistan VA Patients Exceed 400,000

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "Amid talk of a drawdown of troops in Iraq, new statistics from the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) show that US casualties are still climbing quickly. Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield injuries and deaths number 81,361, up from 72,043 last January, according to data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by Veterans for Common Sense (VCS). Veteran patients - including those who didn't seek care until their return home - shot up to 400,304 (from 263,909 in December 2007). For the thousands of soldiers flooding the VA, mental illness tops the list of ailments.... However, many barriers to adequate care and compensation remain, particularly for veterans filing for disability benefits."

Purple Hearts: A Cold-Blooded Decision

Conn Hallinan, Foreign Policy in Focus: "Behind the recent Pentagon decision to deny Purple Heart medals to soldiers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a cold-blooded calculation: It saves money. The official rationale for refusing to honor what is widely considered the 'signature wound' of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is that PTSD, according to Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Lainez, is 'an anxiety disorder caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event,' not 'a wound intentionally caused by the enemy.'"

Turnaround expert, economist sees stimulus making economy worse

Heartland Institute
by Steve Stanek

01/28/09

Garret blames the financial crisis largely on excessive spending and borrowing by government, financial institutions, and individuals. Because businesses, individuals, states, and local governments cannot legally print money, says Garret, ‘they’re stuck, and we’re bailing them out. This means our federal government is going to print money for those liabilities, and that will mean inflation in another year or two at levels we haven’t seen in a long, long time. Also, when government distributes money quickly, there’s usually a lot of money going to where it wasn’t intended. This wastes resources’...

Legislators have included everything they can think of that could require money in the ‘Stimulus’ plan. Maybe no specific kitchen sinks, but there are definitely kitchen appliances. The Wall Street Journal takes a good look at all the government growing, unnecessary, super-expensive, and non-productive waste in this bill. And, like Sowell yesterday, illustrates how the Left is taking advantage of this ‘crisis’ (market correction) to ram all their favorite projects down the throats of American taxpayers - and all, for nothing...

Suprynowicz responds to a “conservative Republican”

Freedom's Phoenix
by Vin Suprynowicz

01/28/09

To be of any use, Libertarian political activity has to confront people with truths, and for the most part (in the immortal words of Jack Nicholson, ‘A Few Good Men,’ 1982) they ‘can’t handle the truth.’ We have no choice but to tell them compulsion-based tax-funded schooling does more harm than good. … We have no choice but to tell them drug prohibition is an unenforceable moral evil, giving birth to the complete police state. … But these positions do not ’sell,’ politically. So anyone trying to win public office — or even raise funds to run for public office — soon learns to pussy-foot around such issues, using euphemisms that allow the listener to avoid confronting these unpalatable truths...

Government and fraud

Billions of dollars were recently lost in the collapse of Bernie Madoff’s self-described Ponzi scheme, in which too-good-to-be-true returns on investments were not really returns at all, but the funds of defrauded new investors. The pyramid scheme collapsed dramatically when too many clients called in their accounts, and not enough new victims could be found to support these withdrawals. A country of Madoffs

The Daily Reckoning
by Bill Bonner

01/28/09

Like Bernie Madoff, the CEOs put it over on everyone — the capitalists as well as the proles. The poor working stiffs had foreign labor breathing down their necks. If they got out of line, their employers would export their jobs to China. The patsy stockholders had no chance either. They knew perfectly well that the schmuck running the business wasn’t worth what he was being paid, but who could argue with ‘performance?’ Besides they had ‘compensation committees’ and consultants to tell them is [sic] was ‘reasonable’ or competitive. Retired CEO of DuPont, Edgar S. Woolard, Jr., did. In 2005, he was chairman of the NYSE’s executive compensation committee. As to the need to pay such high compensation in order to get good talent, he replied with a single word: ‘bull.’ But did not the super-paid super-CEOs create super wealth? It was a ‘joke,’ said he. He blew the whistle. But no one came a running...

Defense doesn’t need stimulus

Cato Institute
by William D. Hartung and Christopher Preble

01/28/09

As the Obama administration and Congress move forward with a multifaceted economic-stimulus package with a price tag of hundreds of billions of dollars, yet another interest group has staked its claim to a share of those funds — the nation’s defense contractors. The arms lobby and its supporters in the think-tank world have made their case in a series of ads, articles and talking points. Martin Feldstein of the American Enterprise Institute describes defense spending as a ‘great stimulus.’ Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol agrees. Noting that the military was ’spending all kinds of money already,’ Mr. Kristol wondered aloud, ‘If you’re buying 2,000 Humvees a month, why not buy 3,000? If you’re refurbishing two military bases, why not refurbish five?’ Such comments ignore that military spending is supposed to serve one central purpose: advancing U.S. security. The defense budget is not a jobs program, nor should it be...

Obama the imperialist

Guardian [UK]
by Richard Seymour

01/27/09

The first Democratic president in the modern era to be elected on an anti-war ticket is also, to the relief of neocons and the liberal belligerati, a hawk. Committed to escalation in Afghanistan, his foreign policy selections also indicate bellicosity towards Sudan and Iran. During his first week in office he sanctioned two missile attacks in Pakistan, killing 22 people, including women and children. … It is tempting to dismiss the ‘pro-war left’ as a congeries of discredited left-wing apostates and Nato liberals. Their artless euphemisms for bloody conquest seem especially redundant in light of over a million Iraqi deaths. Yet their arguments, ranging from a paternalistic defence of ‘humanitarian intervention’ to the championing of ‘western values,’ have their origins in a tradition of liberal imperialism whose durability advises against hasty dismissal. In every country whose rulers have opted for empire, there has developed among the intellectual classes a powerful pro-imperial consensus, with liberals and leftwingers its most vociferous defenders...

US Army to report record number of suicides

CNN

01/28/09

The U.S. Army will report Thursday the highest level of suicides among its soldiers since it began tracking the rate 28 years ago, CNN has learned. Army Reports Alarming Spike in Suicides Last Month

Pauline Jelinek, The Associated Press: "The Army is investigating an unexplained and stunning spike in suicides in January. The count is likely to surpass the number of combat deaths reported last month by all branches of the armed forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the fight against terrorism. 'In January, we lost more soldiers to suicide than to al-Qaida,' said Paul Rieckhoff, director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. He urged 'bold and immediate action' by the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs."

Boomers and Seniors Caught in the Financial Meltdown

NOW: "The economic crisis is affecting people in all income and social brackets, but America's baby boomers and seniors don't have the option to wait it out. The housing meltdown, market crash and rising costs of everything from food to medicine have taken the luster out of seniors' "golden years," or worse, put them into deep debt. "

My Future As An Arms Manufacturer

By Terry Jones

I've decided to start manufacturing weapons. Nothing too ambitious, just some small arms, a few automatic weapons, and maybe a couple of bombs. You know the sort of thing. It's not that I'm keen on killing people. I haven't actually killed anyone myself yet. It's all to do with economics.

Astonishing Incongruities

Is It Time to Bail Out of the US?

By Paul Craig Roberts

How can President Obama even think about fighting wars half way around the world while California cannot pay its bills, while Americans are being turned out of their homes, while, as Business Week reports, retirees will work throughout their retirement (which assumes that there will be jobs), while careers are being destroyed and stores and factories shuttered.

The United Haters of America

By Guy Reel

Somewhere deep inside the authoritarian minds of the ultra right-wingers, the fear, helplessness and paranoia that have always been so evident have reached the boiling point. For them, Obama's election and, perhaps even more so, the sight of him standing on the Capitol steps and taking the oath of office, have brought home a grim truth.

Waldrodung mitten in Deutschland
