Anger at mast proposal

Nov 13 2008 by Ruth Kearney, Glamorgan Gazette

RESIDENTS are up in arms at plans for a mobile phone mast outside their homes.

Vodafone wants to erect a 12m telegraph pole with three 3G antennae, a cabinet and an electric meter on land adjacent to Heol yr Afon, Wildmill.

Margaret McIntyre, of Tairfelin, lives opposite the site where the pole would be erected.

She said: “The first I knew about the plans was when my neighbour told me.

“She had received a letter from the council, but as far as I know, no one on this street has received one.”

She said health risks and visual intrusion to the area are the major concerns.

Treasury Scraps Original Bailout Plan as Economy Worsens

Kevin G. Hall, McClatchy Newspapers: "Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's surprise announcement Wednesday that he'll shift from purchasing troubled assets under the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan is likely to result in spending taxpayers' dollars to shore up unregulated financial institutions that aren't banks but are vital to consumer lending."

Flagpole phone mast in Langton Green rejected

Thursday, November 13, 2008, 14:30

The prospect of a phone mast disguised as a flagpole in Langton Green has been rejected for a second time.

Mobile phone giant O2's appeal against their refused application for three antennas made to look like a flagpole on the Spa Hotel, Mount Ephraim, was dismissed.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council had refused permission in May and the communications company appealed the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.

But the inspectorate Clive Hughes this week declined, stating the planned flagpole was "too bulky", "an unfortunate addition to the roof", "detracts from the appearance of the building", and gave an "unfortunate and harmful impact on the skyline".

Meeting invite over mobile phone mast

A mobile phone mast could be built in Halesowen sparking fury from residents who have been invited to a public meeting. Phone company O2 wants to put up a mast in Bassnage Road.

Campaigners fighting the plans are invited to the meeting next Thursday at Lutley Community Centre, in Brookwillow Road, at 7pm. People are objecting, saying the antennae would be near their homes and that they are worried about the potential health risks.

Yes, we can? – But we won’t!

Bailing out the ruling class

The Partial Observer
by James Leroy Wilson

11/13/08

[T]he bailout solution is attractive to the Political Class, because it increases their power over our lives. But their mismanagement can’t go on forever. Ask the French Ruling Class of 1789, or the Russian Ruling Class of 1917 if, in retrospect, they would have done things differently. Our own Ruling Class not only do not know what is in the national interest, they don’t even know what is in their own best interests. That’s why they resist tax reform. Reform the tax system by making it less intrusive, and we could revive the economy. When the economy grows strong, the ruling class will benefit by getting the credit. As a Taoist might say, to increase power, you must give it up...

Politicizing markets to rob the poor and reward the rich

Classically Liberal
by CLS

11/13/08

Numerous historians and economists, from all sides of the political spectrum, have noted that Big Business is able to use the Regulatory State to protect itself from competition and to transfer wealth from taxpayers to themselves. What we have is an Iron Triangle of Interests which harms the economy and make all, but the favored few, worse off as a result. The most obvious partner in this Iron Triangle of Interests is Big Business itself. These corporations use the political process to buy influence with politicians. And politicians are very anxious to sell that influence to the various bidders. Of course, when it comes to purchasing influence with the political elite it is always the rich and powerful who are able to do so...

The trust factor in mortgage bailouts

Christian Science Monitor
by staff

11/13/08

By now, most Americans have lost track of who is being rescued by Washington. AIG, yes. Lehman, no. Fannie Mae, yes. GM, maybe. Still at the heart of this mess, however, are troubled mortgages. The latest plan to help homeowners strikes a right note. It aims to restore a key and illusive factor in business contracts: trust. Simply throwing taxpayer dollars at problems such as rising home foreclosures or sinking US automakers doesn’t solve the fundamental issue that certain industries have suffered a breakdown of confidence over many years. Americans feel deeply betrayed. Why should taxpayers, for instance, now trust GM, Ford, and Chrysler to make vehicles as consistently reliable and affordable as foreign competitors if they are handed billions? The evidence is not yet in. Simply ’saving jobs’ doesn’t make sense if those jobs still make cars many buyers don’t want. The same is true for troubled mortgages. How can government help fix the broken bonds between lenders and borrowers?

Pending Home Sales Fall Sharply Outside of the West

Dean Baker, Truthout: "The decline in mortgage applications shows that the problem is not the credit crunch. The National Association of Realtors' pending home sales index fell 4.6 percent for the country as a whole in September. However, this decline was dampened by a 3.7 percent increase in the West. Sales fell by 0.7 percent in the Midwest, 7.9 percent in the South, and 16.8 percent in the Northeast. September sales in the Northeast were the lowest on record for this index, which only dates back to 2001."

Prescription Drugs Kill Three Times as Many Americans as Illegal Drugs

David Gutierrez, Natural News: "A report by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission has concluded that prescription drugs have outstripped illegal drugs as a cause of death. An analysis of 168,900 autopsies conducted in Florida in 2007 found that three times as many people were killed by legal drugs as by cocaine, heroin and all methamphetamines put together. According to state law enforcement officials, this is a sign of a burgeoning prescription drug abuse problem."

Protesters angry at phone mast plan

A GROUP of residents have gathered to protest against plans to site a mobile phone mast next to a school and houses.

Plymouth City Council is considering whether the 12-metre mast, which Vodafone would like to erect in Plympton, needs planning permission.

Yesterday concerned residents gathered at the site, on the corner of Redwood Drive and Glen Road, to urge others to object to the proposal.

Richard Madge, 68, lives on adjacent Hickory Drive. He said: "We know the health issues can't be proven one way or the other, in the same way they couldn't prove that smoking was bad for you.

A short honeymoon

AntiWar.Com

by Alan Bock

11/12/08

I suspect that Barack Obama, despite the historic character of his election, will have a shorter honeymoon than many. The economic problems triggered by the government-induced housing bubble have mostly to do with the injection of too much inflationary funny money into the economy, so injecting more, while it may create a temporary sensation of relief, will hardly fix the problems. Perhaps more importantly, however, he faces foreign policy challenges — largely hangovers from the eight years of Bush foolishness, but also some that would have been apparent anyway — that he seems to have little or no idea how to approach intelligently or constructively. The most obvious example is his apparent determination to ramp up the war in Afghanistan, already the graveyard of several empires...

Public refused entry to Leixlip council meeting with mast experts

AN apparent conflict has arisen over who asked for a meeting on controversial telecommunications masts in Leixlip to be held in private.
Leixlip Town Councillors met representatives of Vilicom, a company advising the Office of Public Works (OPW) on telecommunications in private on Tuesday, 4 November.

Journalists and a member of the public arriving for the Council's monthly meeting were surprised that representatives from Vilicom met the Town Council 'in committee'.

The Council had invited the OPW to send its experts to a meeting but instead of answering questions at the regular monthly open public meeting, the Council opted to meet the company at an 'in-committee' (private) protocol meeting being held prior to the normal monthly meeting.

A Veterans Day tribute

AntiWar.Com
by David R. Henderson

11/11/08

Every Veterans Day, I try to do something special to remember or honor a veteran. I don’t like the standard flag-waving event that this day has become for many people. In many Veterans Day speeches, the speakers talk about the hundreds of thousands of American veterans who gave their lives for our freedom. The problem with that is twofold: (1) Very few of those who were killed in war literally gave their lives but instead had their lives ripped away, and (2) very few of them fought for our freedom. So my tribute this time is to a veteran who did not give his life and knew that he wasn’t fighting for our freedom. That veteran is Richard H. Timberlake, Jr. ...

Refusing orders to serve again

Corvallis Gazette Times (Oregon)
by Benjamin Lewis and Brandon Neely

11/11/08

On this day, Veterans Day, we would like to express to the American public why we, veterans of the Global War on Terror, have chosen to refuse orders to reactivate into military service. We are direct witnesses to the horrors of this war, having experienced its atrocities at their source, and we have decided that we can no longer carry out these illegal and immoral policies.

We believe that veterans and active duty G.I.s are in a key position to stop illegal and unjust war, and we are inspired by the resistance of troops who stood against the war in Vietnam. One of the pre-eminent reasons for the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam was increasing dissent among the active duty troops stationed abroad and at home. By the end of the war, there were entire units refusing to participate in combat, many going as far as outright mutiny...

Are jobless next for a bailout?

Christian Science Monitor

The nation’s economic focus is turning from saving the banking system to how to provide a rapidly rising tide of jobless with benefits and a road map to employment. And, just as there was a flashing-red-light urgency to the banking crisis, economists say the same haste has to be taken to deal with what is becoming a massive lay-off problem. Dealing with the jobless has already become a priority for President-elect Barack Obama. Congress is now likely to enact a fiscal stimulus package, including extending unemployment benefits, in either its lame duck session or early in the new year. The risk to the economy is that layoffs cause more Americans to tighten their belts. As they cut back on their purchasing, business reduces its production, laying off yet more workers...

Where Homes Are Worth Less Than the Mortgage

While home values have declined across the country, in some places the declines are so sharp that people owe more on their mortgages than their houses are worth.

One third of homes sold for a loss

Nearly one out of three homes sold in the last year was sold at a loss, and an estimated one in seven U.S. homeowners were "upside down" on their loans at the end of September, according an analysis of public records in 163 markets by Zillow.

New Federal Mortgage Plan Offers Relief to Only a Few

Kevin G. Hall, McClatchy Newspapers: "The Bush administration on Tuesday announced another plan to modify what it thinks will be hundreds of thousands of distressed mortgages held or backed by mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But the plan, more than 15 months into a deep nationwide housing slump, is far short of the moratorium on foreclosures sought by President-elect Barack Obama and the Democrats who next year will have stronger control of Congress."

Lobbyists Swarm the Treasury for a Helping of the Bailout Pie

Mark Lander and David D. Kirkpatrick, The New York Times: "When the government said it would spend $700 billion to rescue the nation's financial industry, it seemed to be an ocean of money. But after one of the biggest lobbying free-for-alls in memory, it suddenly looks like a dwindling pool. Many new supplicants are lining up for an infusion of capital as billions of dollars are channeled to other beneficiaries like the American International Group, and possibly soon American Express."

The US Government Will Default On Its Debt

A Quiet Windfall For U.S. Banks

With Attention on Bailout Debate, Treasury Made Change to Tax Policy

By Amit R. Paley

The financial world was fixated on Capitol Hill as Congress battled over the Bush administration's request for a $700 billion bailout of the banking industry. In the midst of this late-September drama, the Treasury Department issued a five-sentence notice that attracted almost no public attention.

Global systemic crisis Alert For Summer 2009

The US Government Will Default On Its Debt

By GEAB

Our researchers anticipate that, before next summer 2009, the US government will default and be prevented to pay back its creditors (holders of US Treasury Bonds, of Fanny May and Freddy Mac shares, etc.). Of course such a bankruptcy will provoke some very negative outcome for all USD-denominated asset holders.

Remembering The Victims of Those Who Profit From War

By Chycho

How unfortunate that we have a need for such a day, especially since "War is a racket It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives." So stated Major General Smedley D. Butler, USMC, the most decorated Marine in US history.

Major General Smedley Butler, USMC

Audio Documentary

He joined the Marine Corps when the Spanish American War broke out, earned the Brevette Medal during the Boxer Rebellion in China, saw action in Central America, and in France during World War I was promoted to Major General. Smedley Butler served his country for 34 years, yet he spoke against American armed intervention into the affairs of sovereign nations.
