Palin: McCain Campaign's End Run Around Media

Joe Garofoli, The San Francisco Chronicle: "The McCain campaign is attempting to do something unheard of in the modern political era. It is not just running against the mainstream media, it is running around it. [Palin] has yet to hold a major press conference 32 days after McCain announced her as his running mate - and that's not changing anytime soon. McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb said Palin will do at least one news conference before election day. That could mean that the person who could potentially lead the free world will have done one national press conference before being sworn into office."

Shame: The US War Against Unarmed Working Mothers

Bill Quigley, Truthout: "Dozens of petite young mothers gathered this week in the parking lot outside the US Department of Homeland Security in Gulfport, Mississippi. Each wore a long dress or pants to hide her electronic ankle bracelet. Lift up a pants leg and you can see the black plastic band and monitor, which is the size of a pack of cigarettes. The crime these mothers are charged with? Not guns, not drugs, not spying. Working to put food on the table for their families and not being citizens of the US."

Prosecutor to Probe Firings of US Attorneys

Ari Shapiro, NPR News: "Attorney General Michael Mukasey has appointed a federal prosecutor to follow up on a scathing investigation of the Bush administration's decision to fire nine U.S. attorneys in 2006. The Justice Department's inspector general and the Office of Professional Responsibility released the report jointly Monday morning. It is harsh, but incomplete, as key officials in the White House and Congress refused to cooperate with the inquiry."

In Hard Times, Tent Cities Multiply

The Associated Press: "A few tents cropped up hard by the railroad tracks, pitched by men left with nowhere to go once the emergency winter shelter closed for the summer. Then others appeared - people who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring. Within weeks, more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a 'tent city' - an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go."

Mark Crispin Miller Blog

Since he’s the only whistle-blower out there who knows the perps themselves, and how they operate, we have to send this new piece far and wide. Here Spoon tells us that McBush’s team — i.e., Karl Rove and his henchpersons — have their plan in place to steal this next election: by 51.2% of the popular vote, and three electoral votes. He also talks about the major role played by the Christianist far right in the electronic rigging of the vote. And he defines our electronic voting system as a major threat to US national security, calling for it to be junked ASAP, in favor of hand-counted paper ballots...

We can’t let bankers try to blackmail America

Fox News
by James P. Pinkerton

09/29/08

Today I turn over my space to Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, who said these fiery words to a delegation of bankers in 1832: Gentlemen, … I am convinced that you have used the funds of the bank to speculate in the breadstuffs of the country. When you won, you divided the profits amongst you, and when you lost, you charged it to the bank. … You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the eternal God, I will rout you out. The issue back then was the Bank of the United States, a federally chartered institution — sort of a predecessor to the Federal Reserve — that Jackson, ever the populist, strongly opposed. Today, most people agree that a national bank is necessary, but as today’s vote demonstrates, there is no national consensus on transferring wealth from the middle to the top. Good! Let’s hope that principle holds true for a while longer...

The real solution to the financial crisis: recession

Christian Science Monitor
by Yves Smith

09/30/08

The much-maligned bailout appears set to become law. Members of Congress suggest they’ll hold their noses but vote for it anyway. Their reasoning? Something must be done. The premise is that doing nothing will hasten recession. And recession is unacceptable. But that kind of thinking is a big reason we’re now on the verge of a financial meltdown. By taking a zero-tolerance policy toward recession, Washington has dangerously juiced the economy with monetary steroids for more than a decade. The painful truth is that recession may be precisely what’s needed to restore economic health...

Jobless Claims Pushed to Seven-Year High

The Associated Press: "New claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to their highest level in seven years due to the impact of a slowing economy and Hurricanes Ike and Gustav, the Labor Department reported last Thursday."

US Economy Lost 159,000 Jobs in September

Dean Baker, The Center for Economic and Policy Research: "The economy lost jobs for the ninth consecutive month in September, with the pace accelerating to 159,000 jobs. This was the largest one-month fall since March of 2003 when the economy lost 212,000 jobs. The unemployment rate held steady at 6.1 percent, even though the employment population ratio (EPOP) inched down to 62.0 percent. These data, together with other recent reports, leave little doubt that the economy is in a recession."

We Have the Money: If Only We Didn't Waste It on the Defense Budget

Chalmers Johnson, TomDispatch.com: "There has been much moaning, air-sucking, and outrage about the $700 billion that the U.S. government is thinking of throwing away on rich New York bankers who have been ripping us off for the past few years and then letting greed drive their businesses into a variety of ditches. In fact, we dole out similar amounts of money every year in the form of payoffs to the armed services, the military-industrial complex, and powerful senators and representatives allied with the Pentagon."

Report to Call for Continued Probe of US Attorneys' Firings

Carrie Johnson, The Washington Post: "Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine and Office of Professional Responsibility Director H. Marshall Jarrett, who wrote the report, will not absolve department officials of blame but will recommend that efforts to resolve unanswered questions continue, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the findings had not been made public. Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey is preparing to name a prosecutor from within the department to address the questions, ensuring that the politically charged issue will extend into the next administration, the sources said."

2. FDP fordert mehr Mobilfunkforschung
Umwelt/Antrag

A Better Bailout

The Nation
by Joseph E. Stiglitz

09/26/08

The champagne bottle corks were popping as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced his trillion-dollar bailout for the banks, buying up their toxic mortgages. To a skeptic, Paulson’s proposal looks like another of those shell games that Wall Street has honed to a fine art. Wall Street has always made money by slicing, dicing and recombining risk. This ‘cure’ is another one of these rearrangements: somehow, by stripping out the bad assets from the banks and paying fair market value for them, the value of the banks will soar. There is, however, an alternative explanation for Wall Street’s celebration: the banks realized that they were about to get a free ride at taxpayers’ expense. No private firm was willing to buy these toxic mortgages at what the seller thought was a reasonable price; they finally had found a sucker who would take them off their hands: the American taxpayer...

Treasury Will Emerge With Vast New Power

Floyd Norris, The New York Times: "During its weeklong deliberations, Congress made many changes to the Bush administration’s original proposal to bail out the financial industry, but one overarching aspect of the initial plan that remains is the vast discretion it gives to the Treasury secretary. The draft legislation, which will be put to a House vote on Monday, gives Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. and his successor extraordinary power to decide how the $700 billion bailout fund is spent. For example, if he thinks it wise, he may buy not only mortgages and mortgage-backed securities, but any other financial instrument."

The number of vocally anti-war soldiers appears to be growing

Zip it, soldier!

Mother Jones
by Justine Sharrock

09/17/08

The number of vocally anti-war soldiers appears to be growing. The IVAW alone signs up 12 to 15 new members each week; one-third of their 1,300 members have joined since February. Appeal for Redress, an online petition to end the war, has gathered more than 2,200 soldiers’ signatures since late 2006. ‘You take an average group of soldiers and ask them, ‘Is the war worth it?’ and you get close to a majority saying it is not really necessary or viable,’ says David Cortright, author of Soldiers in Revolt: GI Resistance During the Vietnam War, who has been touring and speaking at bases. ‘The anti-war sentiments are much more pervasive now in Iraq.’ As a result, soldiers say, the military is increasingly trying to silence them with formal threats as well as less official intimidation techniques: At their own discretion, commanders can enact ‘non-judicial punishments,’ such as imposing a diet of bread and water, enforcing longer work hours, and requiring intensive physical activity like hauling sandbags back and forth or running for hours in full gear...

McCain and Team Have Many Ties to Gambling Industry

Jo Becker and Don Van Natta Jr., The New York Times: "Senator John McCain was on a roll. In a room reserved for high-stakes gamblers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, he tossed $100 chips around a hot craps table. When the marathon session ended around 2:30 a.m., the Arizona senator and his entourage emerged with thousands of dollars in winnings."

E-Verify and the Surveillance State

by Tom DeWeese

Chief among the schemes to "get tough" with business is the universal enforcement of something called the E-Verify System. It is the brainchild of the Department of Homeland Security and is an electronic employment verification (EEV) program. Essentially, E-Verify uses the Social Security databases to verify Social Security Numbers to determine if someone is a US citizen. Employers are to simply enter in the applicants Social Security Number to verify they are an American citizen (of legal status) and therefore eligible for employment.......

Alternative phone mast sites sought

Thursday, September 25, 2008, 12:00

A NEW telecommunications mast to be built on Eastbourne Road in Uckfield has been turned down by councillors.

Members of Wealden District Council's development control north sub-committee voted in favour of looking more carefully into the possibility of building on alternative sites, such as the land at Ridgewood Farm in Lewes Road, where there is already an O2 mast.

The council had received 75 letters of objection and two petitions from residents who opposed the mast Vodafone planned to build to provide 3G services to the area.

Bail outs, timing: who knew what when?

by Devvy Kidd

Fifteen years ago today, my Project on Winning Economic Reform delivered 1,720,000 signatures to the U.S. Congress to abolish the privately owned Federal Reserve Banking System and the IRS. During the rally, we collected just under 24,000 more signatures, which were all delivered to every member of the House and Senate. Some 4400 Americans gathered to tell Washington, DC, we the people demand a return to an honesty monetary system and stop the stealing of the fruits of our labor for the benefit of the powerful banking cartel........

To: President Bush, Candidates Obama and McCain, Members of Congress, Treasury Secretary Paulson, Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke, and members of the media

Bail Out Main Street NOT Wall Street!

Tens of millions of working and poor people are facing the most dire economic crisis since the Depression of the 1930s. Yet our government is planning to hand over the U.S. treasury to Wall St. bankers. All that the politicians offer to people who are losing their homes, jobs, health care, education and pensions are bigger and bigger budget cuts to vital social services.

Enough is Enough!

I say NO to this injustice. NO Bailout of Wall Street bankers!

Instead, I demand the following emergency measures:

1. Moratorium on home foreclosures and evictions.
2. Freeze all job layoffs and extend unemployment benefits.
3. Freeze all utility cutoffs & roll back gas, food and utility prices
4. Protect workers’ pensions and savings—hands off Social Security.
5. Debt cancellation for working and poor people—no repossessions or wage garnishing.
6. Moratorium on budget cuts in all social programs like health care, education, mass transit, youth programs, seniors programs, veterans programs and others.

Sincerely,
(Your signature will be appended here based on the contact information you enter online)
