We Won't Escape the Worst Recession in 40 Years

Pierre de Gasquet and Virginie Robert interview Nouriel Roubini for Les Echos: the noted economist evaluates the administration's rescue plan and maintains, "... pooling the rotten assets in a sequestration structure is totally useless unless we reduce individuals' debts. Because if they can't pay, we'll have a foreclosure tsunami and banks will go under. And if they go under, the economy will go with them."

Delay row sees phone mast stay

Thursday, September 25, 2008, 09:00

A DELAY of just 24 hours has meant a controversial mobile phone mast has been allowed to stay up in Swansea's Townhill area.

Assembly planing inspector Clive Nield ruled that Swansea Council was one day late in telling telecommunications giant Vodafone that permission for the mast to be installed on land at the junction of Dyfed Avenue and Ceiriog Road had been refused.

The delay meant that Vodafone could ignore the council's ruling and put the mast up anyway, and now has successfully appealed against a further council order to take the mast down.

In his report, Mr Nield said: "There is no doubt the council failed to meet the requirement for notification of its decision within the prescribed 56-day period. Thus, the development in question is deemed to have been approved."

Bush Aides Linked to Talks on Interrogations

Mark Mazzetti, The New York Times: "Senior White House officials played a central role in deliberations in the spring of 2002 about whether the Central Intelligence Agency could legally use harsh interrogation techniques while questioning an operative of Al Qaeda, Abu Zubaydah, according to newly released documents."

Abu Zubaydah and the futility of torture

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Andy Worthington

03/30/09

Reinforcing claims made over the last few years — by FBI agents, by author Ron Suskind, and by myself — that the supposed senior al-Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah was less significant than he was made out to be, the Washington Post ran a front-page story yesterday, in which, drawing on interviews with ‘former senior government officials who closely followed [his] interrogations,’ Peter Finn and Joby Warrick reminded the world that Zubaydah was not actually a senior al-Qaeda operative and had no information about the inner workings of al-Qaeda.

Much to the dismay of residents, the new application is identical and despite a bitter battle in November 2005 by residents who won their fight, Warwick District Council will have to consider the plans once again.

Blame Fannie Mae and Congress for the credit mess

National Center for Policy Analysis
by staff

09/24/08

The vast accumulation of toxic mortgage debt that poisoned the global financial system was driven by the aggressive buying of subprime and Alt-A mortgages, and mortgage-backed securities, by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The poor choices of these two government sponsored enterprises (GSEs) — and their sponsors in Washington — are largely to blame for our current mess, says the Wall Street Journal. How did we get here?

Congress, the Treasury, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Federal Reserve are hell-bent to bail out the housing and financial industries and then regulate them into rigor mortis. All this with no judicial review and a bill for taxpayers on the order of $700 billion to $1 trillion, not including higher inflation. It makes the funding for the Iraq war look like chump change. Bailouts: the wound that will keep on hemorrhaging

by Devvy Kidd

Clearly, we have made huge strides in educating our fellow Americans about fiat currency and sound monetary policy, but without real newspapers in this country, most Americans don't know the truth. It's also crystal clear that members of Congress, with few exceptions, are clue less. I think it's safe to say that many of those who do know, don't have the courage to go up against the most powerful money cartels in the world; the rest are simply crooks who profit from a corrupted monetary system. Over the decades, Congress has been perfectly willing to forfeit their authority, violate their oath of office and.......

Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending

The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets -- including the New York metropolitan region -- will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.

Bundesanwalt gegen Grundgesetz

25. September 2008

While this strategy is easy enough for someone heading off on vacation, business travelers need more practical options to protect sensitive information. Paulson's former firm to be among largest beneficiaries of bailout

Goldman Sachs Socialism

By William Greider

Wall Street put a gun to the head of the politicians and said, give us the money--right now--or take the blame for whatever follows. The audacity of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's bailout proposal is reflected in what it refuses to say: no explanations of how the bailout will work, no demands on the bankers in exchange for the public's money. The Treasury's opaque, three-page summary of plan includes this chilling statement...

Half a Trillion Bailout For The Creators of the Market Crisis

By Bob Chapman

The House Finance Committee, headed by Rep. Barney Frank, and the Senate Finance Committee, headed by Sen. Christopher Dodd, will give it their usual Boo-Boo, response: "I don't know, Yogi," in order to give the clueless sheople the appearance that they are going to protect taxpayers from the slimy bankers, when the reality is, it is already a done deal and has been planned long in advance, probably for many months, if not years, just like the Patriot Acts.

Forbes publishes list of 400 wealthiest Americans

By Tom Eley

The recently released Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans shows that the combined wealth of the aristocracy has increased 2 percent, even amidst the financial breakdown and recession of the economy. "In this, the 27th edition of the list," Forbes glumly notes, "the assembled net worth of America's wealthiest rose by $30 billion-only 2%-to $1.57 trillion."

McDeregulation

By Keith Olbermann - Video

There is a man running for president who actually believes -- right now -- that deregulation has been a great thing for the U-S economy... He has surrounded himself with lobbyists who made millions pushing for the regulatory changes that facilitated the current crisis... And he thinks that deregulation of the banking industry has been so great... we should do the exact same thing with -- make that "to" -- health care.

Bush Withholds Salmon Disaster Money as He Pushes for Corporate Bailouts

Dan Bacher, Truthout: "While George W. Bush wants taxpayers to give Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson a $700 billion blank check to bail out Wall Street for its reckless speculation and greed, the administration announced last week that it would release only $100 million of the $170 million appropriated to salmon fishermen and businesses impacted by this year's salmon fishing closure off the California and Oregon coasts and in Central Valley rivers."

Is Your Vote Safe?

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Ring of Fire: "There are about 30 scams the Republicans are deliberately using, particularly in the swing states to get Democratic voters off the rolls. These scams originate in the so-called Help America Vote Act, which was passed after the Florida debacle in the year 2000. It was originally suggested by Democrats and Republicans, but it was passed by a Republican Congress with a Republican Senate and a Republican president. And instead of reforming what happened in Florida, it basically institutionalized all the problems that happened in Florida."

First Fear, Then Loathing, Toward Wall Street

Allison Linn, MSNBC.com: "As Americans digest a dizzying series of events that has left Wall Street shaken to its core, the mood on Main Street is shifting from fear to loathing. They are angry that government regulators did not do enough to prevent this - and protect them - in the first place. They are upset the government is proposing billions of dollars in bailouts for Wall Street, even as many regular Americans are struggling to hang onto their homes and pay their bills."

Phone mast fiasco blamed on postal delay

September 24, 2008, 00:00

A PHONE mast has gone up unopposed because a council claims it was "let down by the postal system."

The 15m high telephone mast was erected in Beeching Way in July this year after mobile phone giants O2 received a refusal letter two days later than a regulation deadline.

Mid Sussex District Council decided to refuse permission for the erection of the mast back in March and a notice was sent to O2 on March 6.

But O2 says it didn't receive the letter until March 12, two days after a 56 day decision period expired.

The company has now erected the mast at the junction of Beeching Way and Lewes Road, and there is nothing the council can do.
