US Military Recruits Children

For Truthout, Michael Reagan writes: "In May of 2002, the United States Army invaded E3, the annual video game convention held in Los Angeles. At the city's Convention Center, young game enthusiasts mixed with camouflaged soldiers, Humvees and a small tank parked near the entrance. Thundering helicopter sound effects drew the curious to the Army's interactive display, where a giant video screen flashed the words 'Empower yourself. Defend America ... You will be a soldier.' The Army was unveiling its latest recruitment tool, the 'America's Army' game, free to download online or pick up at a recruiting station, and now available for purchase on the Xbox, PlayStation, cell phones and Gameboy game consoles."

Why The Want To Attack Iran

By Ed Kinane

Attacking Iran keeps the pot boiling. It perpetuates the phony war on terror. More war provides more enemies and so more pretext to erode civil liberties. Unscrupulous politicians and certain corporations thrive when fear keeps people dumb and dazed. With another invasion the Halliburtons and Blackwaters get to lap up more contracts.

On Iraq: Wiping Out the Legend

Maya Schenwar writes for Truthout: "A silent mythos is enveloping the liberal consciousness in the waning days of the Bush presidency. It spins like this: When it comes to Iraq, Americans' one reassurance is that this war can't possibly be repeated, not now that we've watched its consequences play out and caught a glimpse of the deception that caused it. As a result of Iraq, the logic goes, we will likely elect a new leader who railed against the war from its inception. We'll then shift toward a foreign policy that disavows offensive interventionism. We will make new friendships and repair old ones. We will live in peace. However, in the forward to 'Lessons From Iraq: Avoiding the Next War,' a collection of essays from the progressive think tank Foreign Policy in Focus, editor Miriam Pemberton warns against such now-we-know-better thinking. She cautions against the oft-uttered mantra surrounding large-scale deeds of evildoing, 'Never Again.'"

Parents’ phone mast plan alarm

PARENTS fear their children’s health could be put at risk if a 12.5-metre mobile phone mast is built next to a primary school.

Mobile phone company O2 – which says there is no evidence of any risk to health – has submitted a planning application for the “telecommunications installation” close to Christ the King Roman Catholic Primary School, in Llanishen, Cardiff.

Almost 450 parents, residents and parishioners have signed a petition objecting to the plans.

Are 400,000 terrorists, 44 groups, and 5 state sponsors trying to attack the US?

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

07/21/08

After having begun a series of investigative stories criticizing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in May 2008, CNN reporter Drew Griffin reports being placed with more than a million other names on TSA’s swollen terrorism watch list. Although TSA insists Griffin’s name is not on the list and pooh-poohs any possibility of retaliation for Griffin’s negative reporting, the reporter has been hassled by various airlines on 11 flights since May. The airlines insist that Griffin’s name is on the list. Congress has asked TSA to look into the tribulations of this prominent passenger. In a recent op-ed in the Washington Post, probably responding to the controversy over Griffin, Leonard Boyle, the director of the Terrorist Screening Center, defended the watch list, claiming that because terrorists have multiple aliases, the names on the list boiled down to only about 400,000 actual people. If there are 400,000 terrorists lying in wait to attack the United States, we are all in trouble...

The Religious Right Is AWOL From The Real War

by Chuck Baldwin

I want to begin this column with one of my all-time favorite quotes. It comes from the great German reformer Martin Luther. He said, "If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and to be steady on all the battlefield besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.".......

Check your voter registration status

This is a very important concern because tens of thousands of voters have been in the past, and continue to have potential to be, unable to vote using a regular ballot due to inaccurate automatic purges of electronic voter registration rolls.

U.S. citizens should check the status of your voter registration at least a month prior to the November election. All U.S. states are required by federal law to use electronic voter registration rolls now.

1a. Re: NYTimes begins the prediction of election problems in November Posted by: Barbara Simons
Date: Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:30 am ((PDT))

I also am very concerned about large scale voter disenfranchisement, because people's names have been stripped from the statewide computerized voter registration databases, also discussed in the article. While I think that some members of Congress supported the statewide databases because they thought that such a system would make it less likely for people's names to be incorrectly removed from the voting rolls, in fact the opposite is true. The introduction of computers into the process significantly increases the opportunity for widespread disenfranchisement of legitimate voters.

Therefore, voters, especially new voters, should be encouraged to check that their names are on the voting rolls. They should do so enough in advance that there will be time to get their names back onto the voting rolls, if necessary. It would also be good if organizations, such as local LWVs and other election integrity groups, could coordinate collection of information from people whose names are incorrectly missing from the voting rolls. That way, it might be possible to detect a problem (i.e. if large numbers of people living in a certain area complain) enough in advance to perhaps get them fixed - or at a minimum to put out an alert.

Election officials should also be urged to create strong meaningful levels of security to minimize the possibility of names being incorrectly deleted, either because of mistakes or malfeasance.

Barbara Simons, Los Altos/Moutain

P.S. Please feel free to forward this.

Judy Bertelsen wrote: The article linked below predits that our November elections will be strained with all the new voters. It is shameful and stunningly short sighted that Congress didn't pass paper ballot funding legislation.

We will need to work state by state to shore up the election process, especially in areas where many new voters can be expected to register. We need to be registering people as early as possible and informing voters of the process and their rights.

Election Fraud and Tyranny

Part 1

Michael Collins, in a Scoop News column: "Mark Crispin Miller's new book, 'Loser Take All,' identifies and analyzes election fraud, the foundation of extremist power in the United States since 2000. Manipulated elections have enabled everything we've experienced from the Iraq war to the current economic meltdown. None of that would have been possible without the ongoing series of 'surprise' wins for extremists and their enablers following the outright theft of the 2000 presidential election."

http://www.truthout.org/article/election-fraud-and-tyranny-part-1

Part 2

Michael Collins for Scoop News: "How did we reach our current state of decline in just eight excruciating years? Aren't we working hard enough? Was there some millennial shift in consciousness and morality? How could we elect leaders like Bush and Cheney and their minions on Capitol Hill? Mark Crispin Miller's latest book, 'Loser Take All,' provides an explanation that precedes any other: election fraud. In his collection of essays, Miller shows that the losers took everything in both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. That made all the difference."

Flu pandemic, could the flu be the roll out of WIMAX?

Flu pandemic, could the flu be the roll out of WIMAX? Is it right to continue rolling out untested and unregulated microwave technology? The Government need to urgently invoke the precautionary principle.

Read the following paragraph taken from an article called ³Radiation Poisoning of America², Idaho Observer by: Amy Worthington

Arthur Firstenberg, who founded the Cellular Phone Task Force, wrote that, on November 14, 1996, New York City's first digital cellular provider activated thousands of PCS antennae newly erected on the rooftops of apartment buildings. Health authorities reported that a severe and lingering flu hit the city that same week. In response to its classified newspaper ad advising that radiation sickness is similar to flu, the Task Force heard back from hundreds of people who reported sudden onset symptoms synchronous to microwave start up symptoms similar to stroke, heart attack and nervous breakdown. Firstenberg then gathered statistics from the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and analyzed weekly mortality statistics published for 122 U.S. cities. Each of dozens of cities recorded a 10-25 percent increase in mortality, lasting two to three months, beginning in the week during which that city's first digital cell phone network began commercial service. Cities with no cellular system start up in the same time period showed no abnormal increases in mortality.

Bad Days for Newsrooms and Democracy

For Truthdig.com, Chris Hedges writes: "The decline of newspapers is not about the replacement of the antiquated technology of news print with the lightning speed of the Internet. It does not signal an inevitable and salutary change. It is not a form of progress. The decline of newspapers is about the rise of the corporate state, the loss of civic and public responsibility on the part of much of our entrepreneurial class and the intellectual poverty of our post-literate world, a world where information is conveyed primarily through rapidly moving images rather than print."

A Battle Over "the Next War"

In The Los Angeles Times, Julian E. Barnes and Peter Spiegel report: "For more than 30 years, the Pentagon establishment considered it an essential duty to prepare for a war of national survival. But under Gates, that focus has fallen from favor. In public speeches and private meetings, Gates has chastised many commanders as ignoring wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while they plan for speculative future conflicts. 'We should not starve the forces at war today to prepare for a war that may never come,' Gates said in a stinging address last month, one of a series he has delivered. Gates even has coined a term for what he sees as a military disorder: 'next-war-itis.'"

I don’t care whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent; all I know is that you are an American in heart and mind, even though, you may be like me, born of mixed heritage from immigrant families who escaped foreign shores to build lives here in this new land. You are still a product of this great melting pot of Americanism. Yes, my skin is olive and I am now an old geezer left over from WWII, where I served in the South Pacific, but sometimes age combined with many life experiences wakes us up, having given us some knowledge of history and civics. With that possibility in mind, let’s look at what is facing us in the future...

Poor ballot designs still affect US elections

USA Today

07/21/08

Poorly designed ballots continue to plague U.S. elections, even after Congress set aside $3 billion to overhaul voting systems to prevent a recurrence of the flawed Florida ballots that deadlocked the 2000 presidential race, a study out today concludes. Problems with confusing paper ballots in 2002, absentee ballots in 2004 and touch-screen ballots in 2006 led thousands of voters to skip over key races or make mistakes that invalidated their votes, according to the study by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. ‘In the big election meltdowns … where thousands of votes were lost, ballot design was the primary cause,’ says Lawrence Norden of the Brennan Center...

US-Africa Relations to Militarize?

Matthew Blake for The Washington Independent writes: "When President George W. Bush toured Africa in February, he found African leaders steering the conversation to the Pentagon's new US Africa command, or Africom. Africom is slated to begin operations in September. It marks the Pentagon's first centralized operation for Africa, like the Defense Department now has, for example, Eucom for Europe or Centcom for the Middle East. The Pentagon, though, has envisioned using Africom as more than a military command. It is designed to help build US soft power in Africa, through what it calls active security missions - like building schools and digging wells."

Obama on the Brink

Robert Scheer writes for Truthdig.com: "Barack Obama is betraying his promise of change and is in danger of becoming just another political hack. Yes, just like former maverick John McCain, who has refashioned himself as a mindless rubber stamp for the most inane policies of the miserably failed Bush administration. Both candidates are embracing, rather than challenging, the fundamental irrationality of Bush's 'war on terror,' which substitutes hysteria for rational analysis in appraising the dangers the country faces."
