Phone mast sparks fury

3:17pm Wednesday 16th July 2008

FURIOUS businesses, shoppers and councillors in Lower Gornal have said it would be “absolutely horrific” if another phone mast was put up in the village.

Mobile phone company O2 have submitted plans to Dudley Council proposing to build a 12.5 pole and a radio base station in the middle of the Abbey Road roundabout in the centre of the village - just a few hundred yards away from another mast.

An aggressive and hypocritical US policy toward Iran

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

07/14/08

The chauvinistic American news media have focused on evil Iran’s missile tests and the indignant Bush administration reaction, while missing some key causes of the event. As if the Iranians had started the entire dust up, the media reported Gordon Johndroe, the White House spokesman, barking, ‘The Iranian regime only furthers the isolation of the Iranian people from the international community when it engages in this sort of activity.’ The U.S. press then reported Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as bristling that the U.S. would defend its allies and protect its interests against attack. The media could have given equal emphasis to the recent strident rhetoric and behavior of Israel and the Bush administration towards Iran, but didn’t. Not only has the Bush administration pointedly declined to rule out military action against Iran, the United States was conducting provocative naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf near Iran before the Iranian missile tests...

Congress overrides Bush veto on Medicare bill

Reuters

07/15/08

The U.S. Congress voted on Tuesday to override President George W. Bush’s veto of a bill to keep government payments from being slashed for doctors who treat the elderly under the popular Medicare health program. … the Senate overturned the president’s veto by a vote of 70-26. … the House of Representatives also had voted to enact the legislation over the president’s objections...

On Medicare, Congress Hands Bush Third Override of Presidency

Drew Armstrong reports for Congressional Quarterly: "Congress sent President Bush one of the strongest rebukes of his administration Tuesday, overturning his veto of a Medicare bill by a substantial margin in both chambers. The override marked a victory in a long ideological battle between Bush and congressional Democrats, largely over private Medicare plans known as Medicare Advantage. The legislation cuts those plans substantially."

Mikki Stokes said she was headed to the store for some sour cream when she was stopped by two Irving police officers. ‘And I was like, ‘Is this something that someone with no criminal record would get arrested for, that’s never been in trouble for anything?” she said. ‘I’ve never been in trouble before. A nation of worriers

The Weekly Standard
by Irwin M. Stelzer

07/15/08

This is the summer of our discontent. Only 14 percent of us are satisfied with the way things are going in the United States, the lowest figure recorded by Gallup’s pollsters since they began asking that question almost fifteen years ago. Consumer confidence is at its lowest level in 28 years, according to the respected Reuters/University of Michigan survey. And not many Americans are expecting things to improve soon. ‘Consumers’ economic outlook is so bleak that the Expectations Index has reached a new all-time low,’ reports the Conference Board. In part this pervasive gloom is due to gasoline prices that have passed the $4 per gallon level. In part it is due to the squeeze soaring food prices are putting on consumers’ pocketbooks. In part it is due to falling house prices, and to a deteriorating job market, with long-term unemployment up 37 percent from last year. And there is no escape from the gloom...

Impeachment Resolution Introduced In House With Reading by Clerk Today

A win is a win

Common Dreams
by Dave Lindorff

07/17/08

There are two ways to view the news that the House Judiciary Committee will be holding a hearing on impeachable crimes by President George W. Bush. One view would be that this is all a charade and that after all, it will not be a real impeachment hearing, but rather, simply a hearing into the impeachable crimes of the Bush administration. As committee Chair Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) put it, ‘We’re not doing impeachment, but he [Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who introduced 36 articles of impeachment] can talk about it.’ Viewed that way, this is not such a big deal. Rep. Kucinich gets to make his case that the president is committing high crimes and misdemeanors and abuses of power and war crimes, but then Congressional Democrats will continue to ignore all the crimes as it has done since taking control of Congress in November 2006. But a second way to view this is as a significant victory over the quisling Congressional leadership, which has been ducking its responsibility to defend the Constitution and to stand up for the rule of law not just since November 2006, but since the inception of the Bush/Cheney presidency...

http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=al_gore_full_truth

Al Gore is a global hero for the work he has done since leaving government to promote awareness regarding climate change. Yet I am sure he would agree that this and other long- standing awareness building efforts have failed woefully to turn such awareness into sufficient climate policy actions. Mr. Gore's efforts continue to do a disservice to prospects for achieving global ecological sustainability by downplaying the immense social and personal transformations necessary, including personal sacrifice, to build a low-carbon economic system that does not further undermine our shared biosphere. And frankly, it is sad to see someone of Mr. Gore's skills, resources and contacts not choose to lead by example and seek to dramatically reduce his own carbon emissions. Tell Mr. Gore if he really believes climate change is truly a global emergency threatening civilization, he should be leading by example and organizing mass protests in support of a rigorous and sufficient biocentric climate plan.

Analysts Say More US Banks Will Fail

And, more urgently, which one could be next?"

Fannie-Freddie bailout may fundamentally alter structure of world economy
http://www.ufppc.org/content/view/7725/35/

[One of the possible consequences of the U.S. government's bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ( http://www.ufppc.org/content/view/7721/ ) is that "the entire foundation of the American -- and dare we say global -- economy could soon be managed out of a single post office box" -- the Federal Reserve, the private intelligence firm Stratfor ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratfor ) argued in an analysis of the current financial crisis.[1] -- Thanks to Aaron Dennis for sending this piece. --Mark]

Fannie, Freddie Spent $200 Million Lobbying

dyn.politico.com — Over the past decade, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have spent nearly $200 million on lobbying and campaign contributions. The two government-chartered companies run a highly sophisticated lobbying operation, with deep-pocketed lobbyists in Washington and scores of local Fannie- and Freddie-sponsored homeowner groups ready to pressure lawmakers back home. Fannie and Freddie's aggressive political maneuvering has helped stave off increased regulation and preserve special benefits such as exemption from state and local income taxes and the ability to borrow at low rates. When their stock prices took a dive last week, their government allies extended another helping hand with a plan for the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and, possibly, Congress to shore up the companies.

Eulogy For The "Ownership Society"

By Mike Whitney

The fact remains that the two biggest mortgage-lenders in the world are busted and last week's stock sell-off was tantamount to a run on the country's largest bank. Paulson's statement was really nothing more than a eulogy for the mortgage industry; a few heartfelt words over the rigid corpse of a close friend.

Fannie’s lesson: The real scandals are legal

Huffington Post
by Dick Meyer

07/17/08

I know the prospect of reading a column about Fannie Mae, the mortgage crisis and government bailouts is as appealing as a bowl of cough syrup. So let’s consider the latest news about the giant company something young parents today call a ‘teaching moment.’ The lesson is about this old and ignored government truism: The worst scandals are the ones that are perfectly legal...

Bailout bingo

Hawaii Reporter
by Taxpayers for Common Sense

07/18/08

As the economy continues to sour and the housing market sputters, lawmakers stand ready to unleash their response: a financial bailout. After losing more than 50% of their stock value in a week, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the latest suitors and Congress has promised to get this package done in time for August. But considering this deal could put taxpayers on the hook for tens of billions of dollars in losses, if not more, it is critical to attach some strong strings to this hastily arranged bailout...

Cost of Loan Bailout, if Needed, Could Be $25 Billion

David M. Herszenhorn, reporting for The New York Times, writes: "The proposed government rescue of the nation's two mortgage finance giants will appear on the federal budget as a $25 billion cost to taxpayers, the independent Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday even though officials conceded that there was no way of really knowing what, if anything, a bailout would cost."
