Landwirte und Züchter würden weltweit durch Züchtung und Anbau Standort angepasster Pflanzen zum Erhalt einer breiten Sortenvielfalt beitragen. Gleiches gelte für die Tierzucht. Es dürfe nicht zugelassen werden, "dass sich einzelne Unternehmen diese jahrhundertealte Arbeit zum Vorteil machen und durch Patentierungen eine Monopolstellung auf bestimmtes Genmaterial beanspruchen", meint der Bauernverband.

Shawn Pogatchnik, for The Associated Press, reports from Dublin, Ireland: "Chief negotiators of a landmark treaty banning cluster bombs predicted Friday that the United States will never again use the weapons, a critical component of American air and artillery power. The treaty formally adopted Friday by 111 nations, including many of America's major NATO partners, would outlaw all current designs of cluster munitions and require destruction of stockpiles within eight years. It also opens the possibility that European allies could order US bases located in their countries to remove cluster bombs from their stocks."

Laut Bundesumweltministerium hat das zuständige Landesbergamt gegen geltendes Strahlenschutzrecht verstoßen. Schavan ist auf Bundesebene für das Forschungsbergwerk zuständig.

USA Today came out with a troubling (but not unexpected) story stating that the federal government is way over its head in red ink — so deep in debt that if you divied it up among the population, the tab would be ‘nearly $500,000 per household.’ D.C.’s estimated $57.3 trillion in liabilities (State and local debt raise the total to $61.7 trillion) comes courtesy primarily of those oh-so-popular entitlement programs that keep the population sucking at the government tit and voting for more. Medicare alone has an unfunded liability of $30.4 trillion.

While serving in Afghanistan in 2004 as an Army Reserve civil affairs officer, the former lieutenant colonel got lost in a minefield while leading a small convoy delivering school supplies to civilians. Even more troubling is the memory of a man who arrived at the main gate of Bagram Air Base carrying a young boy whose leg had been blown off by a land mine. Der Rechnungshof legt akuten Reformbedarf offen. Über 50 Prozent aller Eintritte von ALG II Empfängern in Beschäftigung sind Ein-Euro Jobs, im Jahre 2007 gab es fast 800 000 Eintritte

Den aktuellen Bericht des Bundesrechnungshofs über die sog. Ein-Euro-Jobs wertet der DGB als Aufforderung an die Koalition, den massenhaften Einsatz von Ein-Euro-Jobs endlich zu stoppen. Die DGB-Vorstandsmitglied Annelie Buntenbach bezeichnete das Ergebnis der Bundesrechnungshof-Prüfung als "schallende Ohrfeige für die Politik". Sie kritisierte, dass die Bundesregierung nicht tätig geworden sei, obwohl der Rechnungshof die Praxis bei den Ein-Euro-Jobs schon im letzten Jahr bemängelt hatte.

Auf 100 Langzeitarbeitslose kommen 12 Ein-Euro-Jobber

Rund zehn Prozent der Langzeitarbeitslosen sind 2007 einem Ein-Euro-Job nachgegangen. Wie die Bundestagspressestelle am 19. Mai mitteilte, haben im vergangenen Jahr durchschnittlich 300.000 Empfänger des Arbeitslosengeldes II in einem Ein-Euro-Job gearbeitet. Bei im Jahresdurchschnitt 2,52 Millionen "Hartz IV"-Beziehern seien damit im Jahr 2007 auf 100 Personen rund zwölf Ein-Euro-Jobber gekommen, geht aus der Antwort der Bundesregierung auf eine parlamentarische Anfrage der Links-Fraktion hervor.

Ever since a New York Times report uncovered warrantless domestic spying by the Bush administration, the issue of NSA surveillance and the 1978 law governing it has been intensely scrutinized and debated. Until now, however, little attention has been paid to dubious activities directly connected with the domestic spying. The Bush administration has used expanded national security powers to undermine the legal rights of people in the United States who are identified as al-Qaida supporters, but who are not charged with terrorist-related crimes. The U.S. Treasury Department and other agencies investigating domestic organizations and U.S. persons rely on the NSA to spy and collect evidence for them — a fundamental shift from the past, when the NSA’s vast eavesdropping powers were used only for foreign intelligence gathering. And in the name of protecting national security, the Bush administration has regularly withheld what it claims is key evidence against those accused — insisting, essentially, that the public accept without question its private conclusions about the suspects’ guilt...

After six and a half years, in which they have been ruled illegal by the Supreme Court, derailed by their own military judges, relentlessly savaged by their own military defense lawyers, and condemned as politically motivated by their own former chief prosecutor, they have only secured one contentious result: a plea bargain negotiated by the Australian David Hicks, who admitted to providing ‘material support for terrorism,’ and dropped his well-chronicled claims of torture and abuse by US forces, in order to secure his return to Australia to serve out the remainder of a meager nine-month sentence last March...
