Schily, Siemens-Anwalt für die Atomenergie

Schily stellt Atom-Konsens in Frage

Le Monde publishes the appeal of French cooks (including some famous ones) and vintners for a change in the proposed law on the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMO), a law, which - barring surprises - is nonetheless expected to pass as currently written.

McCain and the "Unitary Executive"

Robert Parry writes for The Consortium News: "If John McCain wins the presidency and gets to appoint one or more US Supreme Court justices Americas 220-year experiment as a democratic Republic living under the principle that no man is above the law may come to an end. To put the matter differently, if a President McCain replaces one of the moderate justices with another Samuel Alito as McCain has vowed to do then Justice Department lawyer John Yoos extreme vision of an all-powerful Executive could well become the new law of the land."

Tell your representative to keep saying no to telecom immunity and warrantless spying

http://action.aclu.org/site/R?i=hv_-amvYPWaNe3H5D569vg..

--------

Telecom Immunity Again?

Congress tells us they don't have time to have real hearings on impeachment because they have SO much important legislation to work on . . . like trying to sneak through telecom immunity for the umpteenth time.

And for the latest attempted scam that has already passed the house, they came up with a shiny new proposed escape hatch. Now they say if the government purportedly told them it was OK, a right wing judge can let them off the hook, which of course they would. How stupid do they think we are?

This is just the same old "just following orders" Nazi war criminal defense. It did not fly then, and shame on the Congress for trying to enshrine it into U.S. law now. Just because some White House stooge attorney drafted a secret legal opinion (so classified that even Congress is not allowed to see it even now), that does not turn treason into patriotism. And if the telecoms did something wrong by enabling illegal domestic wiretaps, they KNEW it at the time, and must be held accountable.

Please call your senators toll free at 800-828-0498, 800-614-2803 or
866-340-9281, and demand NO "following orders" loophole for the telecoms who aided and abetting the White House criminals.

And to make sure your message gets through, please submit this action page to send them a email message as well.

No Following Orders Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/no_following_orders.php

And while we are still talking about impeachment, we spent the last week packing up the latest shipment of the new bright orange "IMPEACH BOTH!!!" caps. So if you have already requested yours, it's on the way. If not, we will send you one for any donation of any amount from this page

New Impeach Both Caps: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_both_cap.php

The reason we are not setting a price is we want everyone to have one who wants one. There is absolutely no doubt that the Cheney/Bush gang will commit even MORE heinous acts in the next 7 months, unless they are stopped first by impeachment. The right wing TV spokesmodels are talking as if starting the next world war is another one of those "done deals". Our only possible salvation is to keep speaking out and demanding justice down to the last possible day. And we will.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Supreme Court Conflicts Stop Apartheid Case

Linda Greenhouse, of The New York Times: "The Supreme Court tossed itself off a big case Monday. The court couldn't take up an apartheid dispute involving some of the nation's largest companies because too many of the justices had investments or other ties with those corporate giants. BKA-Gesetz gehört auf den Müll

13. Mai 2008

Howard Zinn, 85, is a Professor Emeritus of political science at Boston University. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1922 to a poor immigrant family. He realized early in his youth that the promise of the ‘American Dream,’ that will come true to all hard-working and diligent people, is just that — a promise and a dream. During World War II he joined US Air Force and served as a bombardier in the ‘European Theatre.’ This proved to be a formative experience that only strengthened his convictions that there is no such thing as a just war. It also revealed, once again, the real face of the socio-economic order, where the suffering and sacrifice of the ordinary people is always used only to higher the profits of the privileged few...

Collapse of the fourth estate

In These Times
by Jon Whiten

05/12/08

In March, on the five-year anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, the nation’s major news outlets reflected on the war and what led us to the half-decade mark. But few evaluated their own roles in the disaster that has maimed countless Iraqis and U.S. troops, killed hundreds of thousands and … could ultimately cost up to $3 trillion. Fortunately, two new books do examine the media’s role. Greg Mitchell’s So Wrong for So Long lays out a timeline of the media’s damning missteps, while When the Press Fails, co-authored by W. Lance Bennett, Regina G. Lawrence and Steven Livingston, shows how these missteps are not aberrations, but byproducts of the American press...

The cult of the presidency

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

‘I ain’t running for preacher,’ Republican presidential candidate Phil Gramm snarled to religious right activists in 1995 when they urged him to run a campaign stressing moral themes. Several months later, despite Gramm’s fund raising prowess, the Texas conservative finished a desultory fifth place in the Iowa caucuses and quickly dropped out of the race. Since then, few candidates have made Gramm’s mistake. Serious contenders for the office recognize that the role and scope of the modern presidency cannot be so narrowly confined. Today’s candidates are running enthusiastically for national preacher — and much else besides... (for publication 06/08)

It isn’t morning in America any more

AlterNet
by Bill McKibben

05/12/08

It’s not just the economy. We’ve gone through swoons before. It’s that gas at $4 a gallon means we’re running out, at least of the cheap stuff that built our sprawling society. It’s that when we try to turn corn into gas, it sends the price of a loaf of bread shooting upwards and starts food riots on three continents. It’s that everything is so inextricably tied together. It’s that, all of a sudden, those grim Club of Rome types who, way back in the 1970s, went on and on about the ‘limits to growth’ suddenly seem how best to put it, right. All of a sudden it isn’t morning in America, it’s dusk on planet Earth. There’s a number — a new number — that makes this point most powerfully. It may now be the most important number on Earth: 350. As in parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere...

Sailing into a storm

A recent Gallup poll shows John McCain leading both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in a head-to-head matchup. All this before Republicans even begin publicizing the worst that can be said about either of two candidates whose alleged defects provide a supremely target-rich environment. But it’s easy to let the individuals involved obscure larger factors that may prove more important. In a hurricane, even handsome, well-built boats can end up underwater. And right now, the GOP looks as though it may be sailing into a perfect storm...

Ron Paul has no chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination this year, but he continues to head toward the party’s National Convention with an ardent group of supporters and a second-phase strategy aimed at raising the profile of his libertarian-leaning issues. Just last week in North Carolina, Paul took 7 percent of the vote along with five convention delegates. Altersarmut steigt rapide an

Gute Arbeit statt Leiharbeit

World Carbon Dioxide Levels Highest for 650,000 Years, Says US Report

David Adam, of The Guardian UK, reports: "The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached a record high, according to the latest figures, renewing fears that climate change could begin to slide out of control. Scientists at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii say that CO2 levels in the atmosphere now stand at 387 parts per million (ppm), up almost 40% since the industrial revolution and the highest for at least the last 650,000 years."

As Losses Mount, GOP Begins Looking in the Mirror

Paul Kane, of The Washington Post, reports: "Since losing 30 seats and their 12-year stranglehold on power in 2006, House Republicans have kept asking themselves the same question: Can it get any worse? Deadly gift from Monsanto to India

To follow up on your articles, Organic Cotton Beats Bt Cotton in India (SiS 27) and Message from Andra Predesh: Return to organic cotton & avoid the Bt cotton trap (SiS 29), I enclose photographs of mealy bugs infested cotton plants in the demonstration plots of different seed companies in Vidarbha: Ganga Kavari, Paras Bbhrahma, and Banny. All of the plots have the Bollgard label. These mealy bugs have never been in our region on any plants before Bt cotton was introduced. I learned about the devastation of cotton in China two years ago. This alerted me to photograph and video the demonstration plots regularly. So, anybody can say with confidence now that the mealy bug has entered Vidarbha cotton fields through the Bt cottonseed.

Now when the cotton plants have died, the mealy bug is shifting to nearby plants. By mid June, farmers will go for the new cotton crop or plant another crop. But before that, the bug will have multiplied like any thing. It has shifted to Congress weed nearby, and many other weeds and plants in gardens.

At the same time I am studying the sudden death of plants. The new generation cotton seeds, called ‘Research Hybrid seeds’; are all male sterile. In short, they are terminator seeds; and proven by the high-level government committee in1993. I have the report of it. The breeder then published an article advising farmers that they should not use the F2 seeds of such hybrids, as the plants coming out of them are
100 percent sterile. Your article, Killing Fields Near You
(ISIS News7/8) confirmed this for me.

I am an organic farmer residing at Yavatmal in the state of Maharashtra. Our organisation, Vidarbha Organic Farmers Association, has been propagating organic farming since 1994. We have been helped a lot by Dr Vandana Shiva. She was the first person to tell us about about terminators. Right now, we are working for her organisation Navdanya. Judge's Guantanamo Ruling Bodes Ill for System

William Glaberson, of The New York Times: "A decision by a military judge on Friday to disqualify a top Pentagon official from any further role in a Guantanamo war crimes case was a major new challenge to the Bush administration's legal approach to the war on terrorism. The ruling, in the case against Salim Hamdan, a detainee who was a driver for Osama bin Laden, transformed what had been something of a Pentagon soap opera over how to prosecute detainees into a formal ruling that gave new force to critics' accusations of improper political influence over this country's first use of military commissions since World War II."

Big government responsible for high prices

The Free Liberal
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

05/09/08

In the past few months, American workers, consumers, and businesses have experienced a sudden and dramatic rise in gasoline prices. In some parts of the country, gasoline costs as much as $4 per gallon. Some politicians claim that the way to reduce gas prices is by expanding the government’s power to regulate prices and control the supply of gasoline. For example, the House of Representatives has even passed legislation subjecting gas stations owners to criminal penalties if they charge more than a federal bureaucrat deems appropriate. Proponents of these measures must have forgotten the 1970s, when government controls on the oil industry resulted in gas lines and shortages. It was only after President Reagan lifted federal price controls that the gas lines disappeared...

Telecom tower plan worries playcentre

A 22m Telecom cellphone tower is to be built next to Atawhai Playcentre in Nelson.

The playcentre's board, a neighbouring pre-school and Nelson City councillors all oppose the installation of the tower.

However, the telco giant says the Atawhai site, at Nelson's northern entrance, will provide the best coverage. It is one of eight to be built in Nelson for its new-generation 3G wideband network.

Playcentre president Sarah Allen said news of the Atawhai tower came as a shock.

Army suicides up 13%
Baltimore Sun

05/30/08

In a tragic new marker of the rising cost of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army’s suicide rate has jumped significantly, according to a report released yesterday at the Pentagon. As soldiers and families coped with repeated combat tours and long separations, the Army said that 115 soldiers took their own lives in 2007, a rate of about 17 per 100,000 soldiers. The Army said the suicide rate among a comparable civilian population is 19.5 suicides per 100,000. But broader Defense Department studies show that suicides among all military personnel in Iraq, including Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps personnel, occur at a rate of about 24 per 100,000, significantly above the civilian rate...
