Making a Killing From Hunger

From the April issue of GRAIN: "For some time now the rising cost of food all over the world has taken households, governments and the media by storm. The price of wheat has gone up by 130% over the last year. Rice has doubled in price in Asia in the first three months of 2008 alone, and just last week it hit record highs on the Chicago futures market ... In fear of political turmoil, world leaders have been calling for more food aid, as well as for more funds and technology to boost agricultural production. Cereal exporting countries, meanwhile, are closing their borders to protect their domestic markets, while other countries have been forced into panic buying. Is this a price blip? No. A food shortage? Not that either. We are in a structural meltdown, the direct result of three decades of neoliberal globalisation."

Stealth Campaigns

The Center for Public Integrity's Sara Fritz, in a five-part examination of how independent committees shape the presidential race, writes: "Their names roll off the tongue with a patriotic cadence: Freedom’s Watch, Democracy Alliance, Citizens United, Progress for America, Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America. These are the new giants of American politics, the well-funded groups organized behind a veil of secrecy to influence the voters’ choice for president of the United States in 2008."

US Navy Resuscitates South Atlantic Fourth Fleet

EPA Official Ousted While Fighting Dow

Michael Hawthorne, of The Chicago Tribune: "The battle over dioxin contamination in this economically stressed region had been raging for years when a top Bush administration official turned up the pressure on Dow Chemical to clean it up. On Thursday, following months of internal bickering over Mary Gade's interactions with Dow, the administration forced her to quit as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency's Midwest office, based in Chicago. Gade told the Tribune she resigned after two aides to national EPA administrator Stephen Johnson took away her powers as regional administrator and told her to quit or be fired by June 1."

Marsden, the village that mast towers are now taking over

May 2 2008 by Our Correspondent, Huddersfield Daily Examiner

I WONDER if Marsden is rapidly becoming the Communications Mast Capital of Yorkshire?

This semi-rural village sits in a natural amphitheatre in what was once a ‘box canyon’ until the arrival of the canal and railway in the early to middle years of the 19th century. It was previously cut off from Lancashire (let alone the world) except for a tortuous and dangerous packhorse trail to Rochdale.

Scratch torture from US rule book

When it comes to torture, the Bush administration wants the United States to have it both ways. President Bush believes America can be a country governed by laws, even though it may break the law under special circumstances. This is a morally bankrupt position that diminishes America’s stature in the world, and puts U.S. citizens and soldiers at risk. Moreover, it is not necessary. The United States can protect itself without breaking U.S. or international law...

The myth of Green McCain

The American Prospect

If the hype is to be believed, Sen. John McCain is practically the second coming of Sierra Club founder John Muir. ‘I will clean up the planet,’ McCain told a New Hampshire crowd in January, a promise he has made at dozens of campaign stops since then. ‘I will make global warming a priority.’ But while McCain maintains that global warming will be one of his top three issues as president, he has not articulated a plan of action, nor has he updated his policy positions to reflect changing scientific understanding. Despite all the kudos he gets for acknowledging the threat of climate change, both his record and policy reveal a candidate who is confused about what he’s supposed to advocate, and lacks true conviction about environmental protection...

May 5th is the fast-approaching deadline to send your official public comment to the Environmental Protection Agency supporting its plan to stop the Yazoo Pumps. For the first time in nearly 20 years, the EPA is using its "veto authority" to stop the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from constructing the environmentally destructive Yazoo Pumps project. But for the final veto to go through, the EPA needs to hear from you that you want this project gone. Just one minute of your time will help protect 200,000 acres of Mississippi Delta wetlands that would be drained and destroyed by the pumps. These are the same wetlands where Theodore Roosevelt famously refused to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree – an action that sparked the creation of the teddy bear. Stopping this project will also protect some of the best wildlife habitat in the heart of the Mississippi River Flyway, keep several wildlife refuges and national forests healthy and save taxpayers more than $220 million! On April 17th, hundreds of people came to the public hearing in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to support the EPA's plan to veto the pumps. Now YOU can help by personalizing and sending comments to the EPA to make sure it "Dumps the Pumps" to protect Mississippi's precious wetlands and wildlife. Send your message today before the May 5th deadline. Let's flood the EPA with messages urging it to protect this important wildlife habitat!

Resident objects to cellphone towers in West End

A West End tenant has written to Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan to object to the installation of seven cellphone-transmission antennas on the roof of her building. In her April 24 letter to Sullivan, Tina Zanetti stated that she discovered that two separate permits had been issued to Mott Electric earlier this year without any notification to area residents about the “health hazards associated with electromagnetic radiation”.

Zanetti, a resident of 1395 Beach Avenue, noted in her letter that cellphone towers are regulated by the federal government. She accused the city of being “completely reckless” in its handling of this issue. Zanetti demanded that the mayor impose a stop-work order and immediately notify West End residents of this in writing. She also wants a notice published in a newspaper for the purpose of holding a public forum on the issue.

Strike Against War Shuts Down West Coast Ports

Peter Cole writes for The Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "On Thursday, May Day, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union will declare an eight-hour strike to protest the war in Iraq. Since the ILWU controls every port along the U.S. Pacific Coast, including Seattle and Tacoma, this strike demonstrates the collective power of workers willing to use it."

Union's War Protest Shuts Down West Coast Ports

William Yardley, for The New York Times: "West Coast ports were shut down on Thursday as thousands of longshoremen failed to report for work, part of what their union leaders said was a one-day, one-shift protest against the war in Iraq. Cranes and forklifts stood still from Seattle to San Diego, and ships were stalled at sea as workers held rallies up and down the coast to blame the war for distracting public attention and money from domestic needs like health care and education."

Dockworkers close ports in war protest

LA Times

05/01/08

Thousands of dockworkers at all 29 West Coast ports, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, took the day off work today in what their union called a protest of the war in Iraq, effectively shutting down operations at the busy complexes. The action came two months before the contract expires between the dockworkers, represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, and the Pacific Maritime Assn., which represents port operators and large shippers, many of them foreign-owned.“We are supporting the troops and telling politicians in Washington that it’s time to end the war in Iraq,” said union President Bob McEllrath...

Angry residents call for mast veto

Rebecca Connop Price reports

RESIDENTS living near a water tower decked out with dozens of mobile phone masts have demanded that the council throw out plans for two new masts.

A petition signed by 155 people living near the Cargate water pumping tower in Aldershot was submitted to Rushmoor Borough Council on Friday.

The petition called for the council to withdraw the application submitted last month by Orange Personal Communication Services.

ACLU: Torture of Detainees Continued After 2003 Directive

Adam Goldman, of The Associated Press, reports "the military continued to use abusive interrogation methods on detainees after a 2003 directive meant to end such practices, the American Civil Liberties Union said Wednesday after reviewing newly released documents. The Department of Defense documents shed light on the use of psychologists in military interrogations and the failure of medical workers to report abuse of detainees, the ACLU said. 'The documents reveal that psychologists and medical personnel played a key role in sustaining prisoner abuse - a clear violation of their ethical and legal obligations,' ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said."

The case for recession

The American Conservative
by Nelson Hulteberg

04/21/08

Bank of America economist Mickey Levy recently made one of the most astonishing comments heard in a long time, says Chicago financial commentator Bill King in his ‘King Report:’ ‘The Fed knows its credibility would be damaged if the economy slipped into recession.’ King’s response: ‘When did recession become an abhorrent, avoid-at-all- costs phenomenon?’ Recessions have been common throughout our history, and the country has always survived because our political and economic leaders understood that a periodic ‘riding out’ was necessary to cleanse the system of excesses and enable it to return to real growth. What is different this time that makes the Fed so desperate to avoid a healthy purging?

The day I lost my innocence

CounterPunch
by WILLIAM P. O'CONNOR

[T]he generation of young men who fought the Viet Nam war trusted authority. We thought because people in authority are experienced, they usually know best. We were hopeful and idealistic, and the majority of us believed in our country. We were told that freedom has a price and we lived in a country that represented democracy and freedom around the globe. We also believed, as we know now erroneously, that our government was committed to this paradigm. Age has not blessed me with wisdom, but I do know old men make the wars, and I sincerely believe that they feel truth is just a game, a game for children and a game that must be played by young idealistic boys...

The Great Syrian Nuclear Menace

http://www.lewrockwell.com/margolis/margolis107.html

--------

Are these Syrian nuclear pictures faked?

The CIA published three aerial photographs last week purporting to show a Syrian nuclear reactor, bombed by Israel last September. But are the pictures all that they seem? Doubts about their authenticity have been raised by Professor William Beeman, head of anthropology at the University of Minnesota, who has had a long involvement with the Middle East.
