Economy Nearly Stalled in Fourth Quarter

The Associated Press's economics writer, Jeannine Aversa, reports, "The economy nearly sputtered out at the end of the year and is probably faring even worse now amid continuing housing, credit and financial crises."

Soldier Asks Himself: "Am I a Torturer?"

Justine Sharrock reports for Mother Jones: "When I first set off to interview the rank-and-file guards and interrogators tasked with implementing the administration's torture guidelines, I thought they'd never talk openly. They would be embarrassed, wracked by guilt, living in silent shame in communities that would ostracize them if they knew of their histories. What I found instead were young men hiding their regrets from neighbors who wanted to celebrate them as war heroes."

Pakistan's New Leaders Tell US: We Are No Longer Your Killing Field

Declan Walsh reports for The Guardian UK: "The Bush administration is scrambling to engage with Pakistan's new rulers as power flows from its strong ally, President Pervez Musharraf, to a powerful civilian government buoyed by anti-American sentiment.... Pakistanis' anger over U.S. 'meddling'

Pakistanis expressed growing outrage today over the timing of a visit by two senior U.S. envoys who landed even before foes of U.S.-backed President Pervez Musharraf could name a new Cabinet, decrying the visit as American "meddling."

Heavy Fighting Rocks Iraq's Basra City

Agence France-Presse reports: "Heavy fighting erupted in a bastion of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's militia in Basra on Thursday, witnesses said, as military operations against gunmen in the southern city entered a third day."

Thousands in Baghdad Protest Basra Assault

James Glanz and Graham Bowley for The New York Times report, "In direct confrontation with the American-backed government in Iraq, thousands of supporters of the powerful Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army militia took to the streets of Baghdad on Thursday to protest the Iraqi Army's assault on the southern port city of Basra, as intense fighting continued there for a third day."

Vier Konzerne beherrschen Klinikmarkt

The 100 Years War

Democrats have long been counting on the Iraq war being a big political bonus this fall, but that is by no means guaranteed. The US faced a dilemma in Iraq. It needed to have new provincial elections in an attempt to mollify the Sunni Arabs, especially in Sunni-majority provinces like Diyala, which has nevertheless been ruled by the Shiite Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.

Row over phone mast blunder continues

By Craig Manning

WIRRAL Conservatives accused the council of burying its head in the sand' in a row over the controversial siting of four mobile phone masts last night.

They want a change in the 56-day rule governing mobile phone company applications after a council delay in sending out paperwork notifying T-Mobile of a planning committee decision refusing permission to install masts in Pensby, Gayton, Moreton and Claughton resulted in the phone giant having deemed consent' to go ahead with its plan.

Following public outcry a report was compiled by the former Chief Executive of Bolton Council Bernard Knight which found that administrative error was to blame. Disciplinary action was later taken against staff from Wirral's technical services department.

Phone masts policy U-turn boosts coffers

At the start of the mobile phone boom, Rotherham Council opposed a number of applications for masts, including one next to the landmark Hoober Stand at Wentworth, which was eventually built nearer Rawmarsh.

There was also considerable opposition to a mast next to a school at Thrybergh after parents feared it would be a health risk and Rotherham currently has no masts sited on school premises.

New President, new crisis

The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner

03/25/08

Whether the next president is named Clinton, Obama, or McCain, the new chief executive will face an economic challenge unlike any since 1933. The new president will need to reject an entire failed paradigm of how the economy works and of government’s role in it. Since last summer, our private credit system has been unmasked as a series of interconnected Ponzi schemes. The reigning theory was that if government stepped aside, financial innovations would produce reliable, self-regulating prosperity. Instead, we got toxic financial bubbles, whose popping is now infecting our entire economy as credit contracts, while an administration still devoted to free markets watches helplessly...

Debt: Our 9 trillion pound gorilla

In These Times
by Susan J. Douglas

03/25/08

Who would have thought that we might ever miss Ross Perot? Squawking at us with his graphs and pie charts about the dangers of deficit spending and the mounting national debt, Perot was especially outraged that the debt had gone from $1 trillion in 1980 to $4 trillion by 1992. He got people’s attention about mortgaging our children’s futures and won 19 percent of the vote in the 1992 presidential race, the most for a third party candidate since Teddy Roosevelt in 1912. … As we brace for the Swiftboating to come this summer, I find myself nostalgic for a Perot infomercial where he would make clear that my daughter, or my friend’s infant — all of us, as of now — each carries nearly $31,000 of this debt. And we don’t owe it only to each other...

Iraq: Violence spreads as army, militias clash

Telegraph [UK]

Iraq was facing the prospect of nationwide revolt after followers of Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr rose up in anger against a government-led strike on militia strongholds in Basra. Violence spread across southern Iraq and into Baghdad after 12 were reported killed in Basra fighting. Major Tom Holloway, a spokesman for British forces at Basra Airbase, said that the Iraqi army had mounted a cordon around two districts of the city and the police were raiding known militia positions. A new book details the extent to which countries across the globe are increasingly censoring online information they find strategically, politically or culturally threatening. Access Denied: The Practice and Policy of Global Internet Filtering challenges the long-standing assumption that the internet is an unfettered space where citizens from around the world can freely communicate and mobilise.
