Pentagon Holds Thousands of Americans "Prisoners of War"

Penny Coleman, writing for AlterNet, says the Pentagon holds thousands of Americans "prisoners of war." She says: "There are at least 60,000 of them, but they're not on the DOD's list of soldiers missing in action."

„Dank der Veröffentlichungen im Stern sind die Bespitzelungen der KundInnen und Beschäftigten im Einzelhandel wieder in die öffentliche und politische Diskussion geraten. Die technische Entwicklung hat zwar auch das Aus- und Hinterherspionieren im Einzelhandel verändert. Dennoch gibt es neben den High-Tech-Spionen auch heute immer noch den Detektiv in Menschengestalt. Davon können viele im Einzelhandel erzählen. Row over phone mast blunder continues

By Craig Manning

WIRRAL Conservatives accused the council of burying its head in the sand' in a row over the controversial siting of four mobile phone masts last night.

They want a change in the 56-day rule governing mobile phone company applications after a council delay in sending out paperwork notifying T-Mobile of a planning committee decision refusing permission to install masts in Pensby, Gayton, Moreton and Claughton resulted in the phone giant having deemed consent' to go ahead with its plan.

Following public outcry a report was compiled by the former Chief Executive of Bolton Council Bernard Knight which found that administrative error was to blame. Disciplinary action was later taken against staff from Wirral's technical services department.

Phone masts policy U-turn boosts coffers

At the start of the mobile phone boom, Rotherham Council opposed a number of applications for masts, including one next to the landmark Hoober Stand at Wentworth, which was eventually built nearer Rawmarsh.

There was also considerable opposition to a mast next to a school at Thrybergh after parents feared it would be a health risk and Rotherham currently has no masts sited on school premises.

New President, new crisis

The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner

03/25/08

Whether the next president is named Clinton, Obama, or McCain, the new chief executive will face an economic challenge unlike any since 1933. The new president will need to reject an entire failed paradigm of how the economy works and of government’s role in it. Since last summer, our private credit system has been unmasked as a series of interconnected Ponzi schemes. The reigning theory was that if government stepped aside, financial innovations would produce reliable, self-regulating prosperity. Instead, we got toxic financial bubbles, whose popping is now infecting our entire economy as credit contracts, while an administration still devoted to free markets watches helplessly...

Debt: Our 9 trillion pound gorilla

In These Times
by Susan J. Douglas

03/25/08

Who would have thought that we might ever miss Ross Perot? Squawking at us with his graphs and pie charts about the dangers of deficit spending and the mounting national debt, Perot was especially outraged that the debt had gone from $1 trillion in 1980 to $4 trillion by 1992. He got people’s attention about mortgaging our children’s futures and won 19 percent of the vote in the 1992 presidential race, the most for a third party candidate since Teddy Roosevelt in 1912. … As we brace for the Swiftboating to come this summer, I find myself nostalgic for a Perot infomercial where he would make clear that my daughter, or my friend’s infant — all of us, as of now — each carries nearly $31,000 of this debt. And we don’t owe it only to each other...

Thus, those same linguistic wizards from the White House who came up with the ‘Clear Skies Initiative’ label to disguise both the comprehensive deregulation of environmental protections and the carnival of unbridled pollution it produced; those same wizards who duped everyone including Teddy Kennedy into believing ‘No Child Left Behind’ was anything other than a bonfire lit beneath public education standards; those same wizards who deployed comments like ‘plastic sheeting and duct tape’ and ‘Islamofascist’ and ‘Bring ‘em on’ to make sure everyone was afraid, aggressive and ignorant in equal measure; those same wizards who convinced Americans things like privacy and liberty and rights and the Constitution were quaint and dangerous anachronisms we need to abandon before the terrorists use them to destroy America; those same wizards were also able to gloss over the escalation of a hopeless war with another vacant, vapid and now-ubiquitous euphemism known as ‘The Surge’...

Iraq: Violence spreads as army, militias clash

Which do you choose? A way of life where you are the master of your destiny, or one where virtually all decisions are made for you by one ruling body or another? It's the classic struggle facing every human on earth. Freedom or control. Truth be known, there are many who actually choose control. It makes for a well-ordered society with few surprises. In a controlled society, one doesn't have to make complicated career choices, health care is provided........

VA confirms 18 vets commit suicide every day

In a stunning admission, top officials at the Veterans Health Administration confirmed that the agency's own statistics show that an average of 126 veterans per week -- 6,552 veterans per year -- commit suicide, according to an internal email distributed to several VA officials.

US: Vets' Lawsuit Opens Door on Suicides, Poor Care

"The suicide problem is out of control," said Gordon Erspamer, an attorney representing the groups Veterans for Common Sense and Veterans United for Truth in a class action lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). "Our veterans deserve better."

"VA Lying About Number of Veteran Suicides"

Writing for McClatchy Newspapers, Les Blumenthal writes: "The Veterans Administration has lied about the number of veterans who've attempted suicide, a senator charged Wednesday, citing internal e-mails that put the number at 12,000 a year when the department was publicly saying it was fewer than 800."

Anbar: US Trophy for Iraq Security Losing Its Shine

Reuters reports: "Tensions are simmering again in once bloody Anbar province, Washington's prize good news story for security in Iraq. Along the main road through Anbar's second city of Falluja, a former insurgent stronghold and scene of fierce battles with US forces in 2004, markets and car workshops are re-opening for business. But many say that growing anger at a lack of jobs, basic services and political progress threatens to shatter peace in the western province, which makes up about a third of Iraq."

"Mortgage Rescue" Scams Hit Close to Home

Pierre Thomas, Jack Date and Theresa Cook report for ABC News: "As the mortgage crisis continues to unfold, the FBI says incidents of suspicious financial activity banks reported to the bureau has skyrocketed, jumping from 28,000 cases in 2005 to 48,000 last year. Among the factors fueling this two-year, 71 percent increase is a spike in scams targeting citizens facing foreclosure, one of which is known as the 'home foreclosure rescue scam.'"

Legal moves in phone mast row

By Danielle Beeton

Council bosses are in talks with legal experts over a mobile phone mast which was put up after an administrative mix-up.

Phone giant O2 erected the 15-metre mast in Ashdown Road, Farringdon, last year after wrongly receiving an approval letter from Sunderland City Council.

Now the council is embroiled in a legal battle to pull the mast down.

Leave us alone!

Frontiers of Freedom
by Helen and Peter Evans

03/24/08

Grover Norquist has just published a new book. Its title is ‘Leave Us Alone: Getting the Government’s Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives.’ The ever-surprising founder of Americans for Tax Reform has given us a brilliant analysis of American society that sheds a revealing new light on politics and is actually fairly encouraging to Republicans as we approach this November’s presidential election...

New housing crisis, old isms

In These Times
by David Sirota

03/24/08

The Federal Reserve Bank’s decision last week to address the housing crisis by extending $200 billion of taxpayer-financed credit to Wall Street banks was met with a stunned reaction typical of surprising events. But really, the move was the expression of longstanding isms that routinely package corruption as sound public policy. Some background: During the housing boom, banks doled out home loans to financially strapped borrowers, often on predatory terms. On the creditor side, these same banks packaged many of the loans as complex securities and sold them off to unwitting investors, generating a handsome profit on the paper transactions. At the same time, Wall Street used campaign contributions to coerce Congress into blocking anti-predatory-lending bills and repealing a landmark law regulating how banks could buy and sell securities...

Students “lured” into armed forces

Why We Said No: Three Diplomats' Duty

Ann Wright, John Brown and Brady Kiesling, writing in The Huffington Post, say: "Five years ago this month, the three of us left the US Foreign Service in opposition to the war on Iraq. We were not pacifists. We were professional, non-partisan diplomats bound by our oath of loyalty to the US Constitution. Our job was to build effective relationships with key figures outside the United States. We used our language skills, respectful curiosity, and understanding of local politics to promote US national interests as our president and secretary of state directed."

Financial Meltdown

Dean Baker, writing for Truthout, says: "Progressives usually fight for the interests of those at the middle and bottom at the expense of those on top. However, during this period of unprecedented financial crisis, when the Wall Street rich are begging for the helping hand of the government, most progressives appear to be on the sidelines. Rather than taking advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to reduce inequality and educate the public about how the economy really works, progressive voices have been unusually quiet."

The Woman Behind the Camera at Abu Ghraib

In The New Yorker, Philip Gourevitch and Errol Morris write: "All that the soldiers of the 372nd Military Police Company, a Reserve unit out of Cresaptown, Maryland, knew about America's biggest military prison in Iraq, when they arrived there in early October of 2003, was that it was on the front lines. Its official name was Forward Operating Base Abu Ghraib. Never mind that military doctrine and the Geneva Conventions forbid holding prisoners in a combat zone, and require that they be sped to the rear; you had to make the opposite sort of journey to get to Abu Ghraib."
