Soft Shoe in Hard Times

Maureen Dowd, writing for The New York Times, says: "Everyone here is flummoxed about why the president is in such a fine mood. The dollar's crumpling, the recession's thundering, the Dow's bungee-jumping and the world's disapproving, yet George Bush has turned into Gene Kelly, tap dancing and singing in a one-man review called 'The Most Happy Fella.'"

Many Voting for Clinton to Boost GOP

Scott Helman, reporting for The Boston Globe, writes: "For a party that loves to hate the Clintons, Republican voters have cast an awful lot of ballots lately for Senator Hillary Clinton: About 100,000 GOP loyalists voted for her in Ohio, 119,000 in Texas, and about 38,000 in Mississippi, exit polls show. Subprime Mortgage Watchdogs Kept on Leash

E. Scott Reckard, reporting for The Los Angeles Times, writes: "Freelance financial watchdogs who examined the paperwork on subprime home loans being sold to Wall Street had an inside view of the boom in easy-money lending this decade. The reviewers say they raised plenty of red flags about flaws so serious that mortgages should have been rejected outright - such as borrowers' incomes that seemed inflated or documents that looked fake - but the problems were glossed over, ignored or stricken from reports."

The economic consequences of Iraq run even deeper

The Wages of Peace

Robert Pollin and Heidi Garrett-Peltier write for The Nation: "The economic consequences of Iraq run even deeper than the squandered opportunities for vital public investments. Spending on Iraq is also a job killer. Every $1 billion spent on a combination of education, healthcare, energy conservation and infrastructure investments creates between 50 and 100 percent more jobs than the same money going to Iraq. Taking the 2007 Iraq budget of $138 billion, this means that upward of 1 million jobs were lost because the Bush Administration chose the Iraq sinkhole over public investment."

Army Judge in Guantanamo Bay Rebukes Government

Big Brother really is watching

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

03/14/08

I’ve been reading the news about soon-to-be-ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer with mixed feelings. Yes, mixed. On the one hand, there is something satisfying in seeing an insufferably self-righteous, politically ambitious, ham-handed, and ethically challenged former prosecutor lose his grip on power because he did what he used to prosecute other people for doing. On the other hand, he was caught in a victimless crime because the ludicrously named Patriot Act requires banks to inform the IRS when their depositors engage in ’suspicious,’ that is, unusual, financial activity...

How to destroy a country in five years

CounterPunch
by Patrick Cockburn

03/16/08

Five rears after the invasion of Iraq the US and the Iraqi government both claim that Iraq is becoming a less dangerous place, but the measures taken to protect Mr Maliki told a different story. Gun-waving soldiers first cleared all traffic from the streets. Then four black armored cars, each with three machine gunners on the roof, raced out of a heavily fortified exit from the Green Zone, followed by sand-coloured American Humvees and more armoured cars. Finally, in the middle of the speeding convoy, we saw six identical bullet proof vehicles with black windows, one of which must have carried Mr Maliki. The precautions were not excessive since Baghdad remains the most dangerous city in the world...

Another year, another $300 billion

Boston Globe
by Linda Bilmes

03/16/08

The sixth year of the Iraq war begins this week. The war is now the second-longest in US history — longer than any except Vietnam. So far, 1.6 million US troops have served, more than a third of them for two or more tours of duty. Almost 4,000 US service personnel have been killed, and 60,000 wounded, injured or contracted a serious disease. Many survive with severe multiple injuries (’polytraumas’) that in previous wars would have almost certainly ended in death. One-third of the 780,000 troops discharged so far have been treated at veterans’ hospitals and clinics, including 120,000 treated for mental health conditions and 68,000 diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. This year alone the Department of Veterans Affairs expects to treat 333,000 returning veterans. The majority of these veterans will be eligible to receive lifetime disability compensation - 228,000 have already filed applications...

Veterans recall horrors of war in live broadcast

Boston Globe

03/16/08

Liz Jackson’s eyes were fixed on a screen showing a live broadcast of anguished testimonies by Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans describing what they had seen and done during their combat tours. Jeffery Smith recalled how his Army unit beat and humiliated Iraqi prisoners. Former Marine Bryan Casler recounted how fellow Marines urinated and defecated into food and gave it to Iraqi children. Former Marine Matthew Childers talked about how he used to humiliate Iraqi civilians during predawn raids on their homes. When he described turning away an Iraqi father who was asking American troops to help the badly burned baby he carried in his arms, Jackson began to weep silently. ‘These soldiers are saying: ‘I’m complicit,” said Jackson, 29, a community organizer from Cambridge. ‘But every American citizen who saw this happen and isn’t out there protesting is complicit. Estimates of Iraq War Cost Were Not Close to Ballpark

David M. Herszenhorn, of The New York Times, reports: "At the outset of the Iraq war, the Bush administration predicted that it would cost $50 billion to $60 billion to oust Saddam Hussein, restore order and install a new government. Five years in, the Pentagon tags the cost of the Iraq war at roughly $600 billion and counting. Joseph E. Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist and critic of the war, pegs the long-term cost at more than $4 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office and other analysts say that $1 trillion to $2 trillion is more realistic, depending on troop levels and on how long the American occupation continues."

Debt Serfdom Comes to America

By Dr. Ellen Brown

The Irish were driven to America by debt, and they are leading the Western world in household debt today. The London Daily Telegraph reported on March 13, 2008 that household debt in Ireland has reached 190 percent of disposable income, the highest in the developed world; and that the Irish banking system is suffering such acute strains from the downturn in the housing market that it may have to nationalize its banks.1 The same may soon be happening in the United States, and for much the same reasons.

Wiretapping's True Danger

Writing for The Los Angeles Times, Julian Sanchez says, "As the battle over reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act rages in Congress, civil libertarians warn that legislation sought by the White House could enable spying on 'ordinary Americans.' Others, like Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), counter that only those with an 'irrational fear of government' believe that 'our country's intelligence analysts are more concerned with random innocent Americans than foreign terrorists overseas.'"

The War and the Working Class

In The Nation, Michael Zweig says, "The government treats its soldiers the way most corporations treat their workforce - as an invisible, disrespected, disposable means to an end that is contrary to workers' interests. Members of the armed forces come mainly and disproportionately from the working class and from small-town and rural America, where opportunities are hard to come by. Iraq War's Cost: Loss of US Power, Prestige and Influence

Warren P. Strobel of McClatchy Newspapers reports: "It was a decision that only President Bush had the power to make: At about 9 a.m. on March 19, 2003, in the Situation Room in the basement of the West Wing of the White House, he gave the 'execute order' to begin Operation Iraqi Freedom, the US-led invasion of Iraq."

For Democrats, Increased Fears of a Long Fight

Adam Nagourney and Jeff Zeleny, writing for The New York Times, report: "Lacking a clear route to the selection of a Democratic presidential nominee, the party's uncommitted superdelegates say they are growing increasingly concerned about the risks of a prolonged fight between Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, and perplexed about how to resolve the conflict."

McCain Would Continue the Bush II Disaster

by Steven Yates

Whether we like it or not, the power elite is getting what it wants again this election year. Having recognized the philandering, cross-dressing Rudy Giuliani as unappealing to most Republican voters and having been able to black out Ron Paul for the most part, they have gotten behind John McCain as their GOP standard-bearer. The evidence: before Christmas, McCain seemed to have few prospects and was running out of money. Now, with his having reached the magic number of 1,191 delegates, we are looking at yet another coronation.......
