The First Sixth-Anniversary-of-the-Iraq-War Article

Tom Engelhardt writes for TomDispatch: "Please don't write in with a correction. I know just as well as you do that we're approaching the fifth, not the sixth, anniversary of the moment when, on March 19, 2003, George W. Bush told the American people: 'My fellow citizens, at this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger ... My fellow citizens, the dangers to our country and the world will be overcome. We will pass through this time of peril and carry on the work of peace. We will defend our freedom. We will bring freedom to others and we will prevail.' At that moment, of course, the cruise missiles meant to 'decapitate' Saddam Hussein's regime, but that killed only Iraqi civilians, were on their way to Baghdad. I'm perfectly aware that articles galore will be looking back on the five years since that day. This is not one of them."

Taking It to the Street

Sara Robinson, writing for Campaign for America's Future, writes, "The conservative worldview has succeeded so wildly - and is still holding such tenacious sway over the ways Americans approach their current stack of problems - because the conservatives started out 30 years ago with a focused plan that put promoting their model of reality at the center of every other action."

Democrats Face Racial Issue Again

Patrick Healy and Jeff Zeleny, reporting for The New York Times, write: "After the Democratic primary in South Carolina turned racially divisive in January, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama essentially declared a truce and put a stop to fighting between their camps. Ferraro resigned Wednesday from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign finance committee but remained unapologetic for citing Senator Barack Obama's race as the decisive factor in his success."

Vertrag von Lissabon nicht zukunftsfähig

The good cop and bad cop of world government

Strike the Root
by Anthony Gregory

03/12/08

An irony is that in recent years, the United Nations has at times appeared to be downright decent compared to the US empire. Most conspicuously, the UN Security Council rejected the US war on Iraq, which has so far robbed a million people of their lives and many more of their homes and liberties, bringing about one of the greatest human tragedies in modern times. The UN thus appears to be a force for peace, but when we look deeper, we see something sinister. The US waged that war in supposed defense of UN resolutions. The UN’s credibility was exploited to back up American aggression, even as the organization was impotent to stop the war it nominally opposed. And the bottom line is, when the UN and US supposedly conflict, the UN never really wins. American conservatives worry about American sovereignty. They fear a future where the UN strips America of its guns, wealth and Constitution. So we need US power to, at a minimum, protect us and our national sovereignty from the UN. Not very likely...

Gov. Spitzer’s bust should give pause to those in Congress who are ready to hand President Bush a free pass to continue his six-year campaign of warrantless spying on Americans. We now know from yesterday’s Wall Street Journal article that the spying Bush has been doing through the National Security Agency since early 2001 has included vast computer sweeps of not just internet and phone activity, but also bank and credit card transactions. These are sweeps of ordinary everyday people, with computers looking for odd transactions, or for code words, or for transactions involving specific targeted organizations or addresses. What nailed Spitzer, we now learn, was a series of bank transactions he had with the bank account of the Emperor’s Club VIP call girl operation...

Law enforcement's premature dismissal of terrorism as a motivating factor is puzzling and harmful

Inverse false alarms

The Weekly Standard

03/12/0

by Daveed Gartenstein-Ross & Kyle Dabruzzi

The U.S. Code defines domestic terrorism as acts that endanger human life in violation of American criminal law, and that appear to be intended ‘to intimidate or coerce a civilian population’ or ‘to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion.’ So the defining factor that would classify an instance of violence as terrorism is the motivation behind it: A violent act is terrorism if its perpetrator intends it to intimidate American citizens or alter U.S. policies. With that definition in mind, the pattern of law enforcement declaring violent incidents to be unrelated to terrorism before they have any way of knowing becomes clear...

A look at oil politics

Classically Liberal
by CLS

03/12/08

There is something interesting to consider about the connection between political instability and oil. First, contrary to the ravings of the Loony Left most major oil production is a socialist enterprise. National governments control oil in most countries. And where this is the case there is inherent political instability. Government, like Bush, tends to be be destructive. It is inherently irresponsible. Government is an entity which exists by force. It doesn’t have to supply a need or fulfil a function to stay in place. It can use guns — and does...

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

The golden rule

AntiWar.Com
by Charles Pena

03/13/08

As children, most of us learned the so-called golden rule: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Or in more plain language: ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated.’ Also known as the ethic of reciprocity, the golden rule is a moral principle common to most of the world’s religions, including Christianity and Islam. According to Matthew 7:12, ‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.’ And according to the Prophet Mohammed, ‘Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.’ While the golden rule is not an absolute guide to determine which actions are right or wrong, it is an important test of moral consistency and coherence. In that respect, two policies of the Bush administration promulgated in the name of the war on terrorism have failed the test...

Ashcroft defends lucrative contract

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

03/12/08

Even for a former attorney general, John Ashcroft’s recent bill for monitoring an Indiana company accused of wrongdoing raised eyebrows: a $750,000 monthly fee plus what one member of Congress said amounted to $895 an hour, adding up to more than $7.5 million over five months. An invoice with those charges submitted by Ashcroft’s company sparked debate in a House Judiciary subcommittee Tuesday on how the Justice Department awards such contracts and whether Ashcroft’s selection by a U.S. attorney who once worked for him was a conflict of interest. Ashcroft defended the contract to monitor Zimmer Holdings Inc., one of several manufacturers of orthopedic devices charged last year with violating anti-kickback laws. Under a deferred prosecution agreement with the Justice Department, Zimmer is scheduled to pay Ashcroft’s company between $27 million and $52 million over 18 months...

By Pierre Tristam

'Terrorists' are those who use violence against the side that is using the word." Until we get past the contrivance, using the word "terrorism" is itself an act of belligerence. Its false distinctions conceal our own terrorism. It absolves its perpetrators. And it makes us complicit in the duplicity, if not the terrorism, for standing united behind the contrivance.

Why a Little BC Town Wants to Banish Cell Phones

By Bill Metcalfe
Published: March 13, 2008

TheTyee.ca

Looking for a nice quiet place to get away and unwind? The Village of New Denver in eastern British Columbia wants to make an unusual sales pitch:

Come, stay, and never hear the ring of a cell phone.

New Denver's citizens voted against the introduction of mobile phone service in a referendum in January. The vote was a close one -- 117 to 110 -- but the village council said before the referendum that it would live by the result. And it wants Telus to do the same.

Funding foreign military while dumping on American veterans

by Devvy Kidd

How many times do we hear politicians say how much they respect our active duty military and honor our veterans? From presidents to members of Congress since 911, it's become a staple of Washington, DC., double speak. The reality is far different. Not only have the same elected officials lied and dragged the American people into one war after another we didn't want, they have betrayed those who do come home. Three sitting presidents in a row, Bush, Sr., Clinton and Bush, Jr., have allowed the use of depleted uranium to kill not only the indigenous population of Iraq, but our own........

Cell Tower Construction Causes Concern

T-Mobile To Pay $18,000 Each Year To County

Reported By Jonathan Martin

POSTED: 11:51 am CDT March 12, 2008
UPDATED: 2:49 pm CDT March 12, 2008

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Parents in Rutherford County are concerned about the proposed construction of a cell phone tower near a playground and school.

The local planning commission has already approved the tower that would be constructed directly behind Wilson Elementary in Rutherford County and next to the playground.

Channel 4 talked with parents about their concerns of electromagnetic radiation emitting from the proposed 250-foot tower.

While cell phone service is currently spotty in this area, parents at the school said its not worth building a tower and risking their kids health and decreasing property values.

März in Berlin.

Happy birthday, DHS

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

03/11/08

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just turned five years old. It seems like it was born just yesterday. The department’s growing pains have made it a slow learner and a downright ugly child. Born in an atmosphere of tension and fear, and cobbled together from pieces of other government departments and agencies, the prospects for this Frankenstein offspring were always dim. Yet, as Congress frequently does in times of crisis, the legislative body, in the wake of 9/11, had to be seen as doing something — anything — to respond to the crisis, even if its actions were ineffective and even counterproductive. And predictably, the Department of Homeland Security has been a disaster...

Gitmo trials fail Nuremberg test

Sacramento Bee
by Nat Hentoff

03/11/08

In Sen. Christopher Dodd’s superb book, ‘Letters from Nuremberg: My Father’s Narrative of a Quest for Justice’ (Crown, 2007), he quotes his father, Thomas Dodd, who became the No. 2 prosecutor in the American team at Nuremberg: ‘Those of us who were privileged to serve at the Nuremberg Trial are proud of the entire proceeding. … Every right of the defendants was scrupulously observed. They were given every possible opportunity to make every explanation and every possible defense. Witnesses were obtained for them merely at their request. Documents were made available, library facilities were at their disposal, and throughout every hour of the trial they were afforded every opportunity to answer every charge.’ As others and I have reported, the procedures at Guantanamo — by glaring contrast — are the very opposite of those at Nuremberg...

The devilish coin

Fairfield County Weekly
by Phil Maymin

The ends are to prevent another 9/11. There are basically no limitations on the means, except perhaps on the rate of growth. Like a virus, the means tend to grow slowly, waiting until we are accustomed to one before imposing another. National ID cards, mandatory tracking databases, roving wiretaps, and perhaps even reinstating the draft are all more than just possibilities: They have all been introduced and sometimes passed by Congress. Why stop there? Let’s imagine for a moment that the government has the technology to unobtrusively read our minds. Should we let them do it? (for publication 03/13/08)

The World As It Is

By Chris Hedges

The long, slow drip of collective humiliation and abuse, along with the tiny and large indignities that go into transforming human beings into fanatics, is rarely understood by those on the outside. It ticks away like a clock until it suddenly explodes in our face.

A Way To Stave Off Iran Sanctions

By Kaveh L Afrasiabi

At last week's meeting of the board of governors of the IAEA in Vienna, South Africa and other Non-Aligned Movement members issued a strong communique that reiterated Non-Aligned Movement's principled support for Iran's right to nuclear technology, echoing the Non-Aligned Movement's Havana declaration of September 2006 that called for the resolution of Iran's nuclear issue "within the IAEA framework".

Fallon's "No Iran War" Line Angered White House

Writing for Inter Press Service, Gareth Porter says, "A new article on CENTCOM commander Adm. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney."

Cell tower plan irritates neighbors

By BRANDON PUTTBRESE

For a laundry list of reasons — most notably their children’s health — residents are rallying to oppose construction of a 250-foot cellular tower at an elementary school in northern Rutherford County.

Kenneth Allen, a four-year resident of the Wilson Ridge neighborhood, said the proposal to build a cell tower next to the playground at Wilson Elementary on Cut Off Road doesn’t sit well with the community.

The health effects of exposing children to low levels of electromagnetic radiation emitted by towers are heavily disputed, but there’s enough evidence to cause concern for Allen, who circulated a petition challenging the tower around the neighborhood, which he says everyone readily signed.
