The Silent Coup: How a Nation Ruled by Law, Becomes a Nation Ruled by Men

Liza Persson writes for OpEd News: "There is a battle far from getting the attention it deserves considering the stakes - the rule and governing of the USA. You would only notice with great difficulty and after spending a lot of time viewing hearing in various congressional committees, picking up a piece here and another there, and painstakingly putting them into a historical context in a far from obvious manner."

Winter Soldiers to Testify Against War

Reporting for Truthout, Maya Schenwar writes, "Thirty-seven years ago, in the midst of a bitter-cold Michigan winter, 109 Vietnam veterans gathered at a Howard Johnson Motel auditorium in Detroit to tell their stories. For three days, they told of ransacking undefended villages, attacking civilians, mutilating bodies, torturing Viet Cong suspects, burning houses, destroying Vietnamese property and livestock and killing innocent children."

Recipes for Disaster in Iraq

Tom Engelhardt and Frida Berrigan write for TomDispatch.com: "In other words, in honor of the soon-to-arrive fifth anniversary of his war without end, the President has offered a formula for economic success in bad times that might be summed up this way: less houses, more bases, more weaponry, more war. This, of course, comes from the man who, between 2001 and today, presided over an official Pentagon budget that leapt by more than 60% from $316 billion to $507 billion, and by more than 30% since Iraq was invaded. Looked at another way, between 2001 and the latest emergency supplemental request to pay for his wars (first in Afghanistan and then in Iraq), supplemental funding for war-fighting has jumped from $17 billion to $189 billion, an increase of 1,011%. At the same time, almost miraculously, the US armed forces have been driven to the edge of the military equivalent of default."

The evil that parties do

The Price of Liberty
by Ted Lang

02/25/08

I am not one of those disciples of the state, nor that student of politics, that offers that the United States Constitution is ‘the greatest document ever written.’ My choice would be instead, the Declaration of Independence. It was the Declaration that cleverly transferred the power of Divine Right from a nation’s monarch to each and every single, solitary citizen of a nation. It was that document that established and reaffirmed John Locke’s ‘life, liberty and property’ as the human means by which we can all enjoy the Creator’s gifts. It was the Declaration that established government as an artificial entity, one whose only purpose was to guarantee individual human freedom, and that when government fails in this regard, citizens had a right to abolish it and to create a better one to replace it...

A commission that should cause concern

Independent Institute
by Donald A. Downs

02/27/08

Washington commissions typically elicit little more than a yawn. Their numerous unread reports gather dust on shelves all over the city, from Foggy Bottom to Capitol Hill. So why should we be concerned about legislation, approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in October and now pending in the Senate, to establish a bipartisan ‘National Commission on the Prevention of Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism?’ Don’t we want to prevent these things? Yes, we do. But we also want to prevent the government from engaging in ideological witch hunts or violating civil liberties, simply on the basis of what people believe...

A lesson in value theory for Clinton

The Free Liberal

During the Ohio debate, Hillary Clinton used the word “value” three times. And each time she did so incorrectly. She’s not alone, however. The mistakes she makes in value theory have become commonplace in America. But without a proper understanding of value, ethics and politics become warped. In der Schweiz verboten, in Deutschland erlaubt? Gen-Weizen stoppen!

Umweltinstitut München e.V. – Newsletter vom 29. Februar 2008

The foreign policy follies

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

02/29/08

Ignore the past, and plunge into the future. Irrespective of one’s position on the war — or the presidential race — one has to ask: is this really how a self-proclaimed ‘conservative’ formulates policy? Conservatism, as I’ve been led to understand it, is all about empiricism: a methodology that upholds the superiority of the tried-and-true, and validates a reverence for tradition. However, when the traditionalists — or their leaders — declare, in effect, that history is bunk, we have truly entered Bizarro World. Conservatives are really lost in the wilderness these days, and the death of William F. Buckley, Jr., has proved to be the occasion for a lot of commentary on conservatism, past and future...

Pelosi wants Bush aides investigated

San Francisco Chronicle

02/28/08

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked the Justice Department on Thursday to open a grand jury investigation into whether President Bush’s chief of staff and former counsel should be prosecuted for contempt of Congress. Pelosi, D-Calif., demanded that the department pursue misdemeanor charges against former White House counsel Harriet Miers for refusing to testify to Congress about the firings of federal prosecutors in 2006 and against chief of staff Josh Bolten for failing to turn over White House documents related to the dismissals. She gave Attorney General Michael Mukasey one week to respond and said refusal to take the matter to a grand jury will result in the House’s filing a civil lawsuit against the Bush administration...

US Is World's Number 1: Record-high Ratio of Americans In Prison

By David Crary

For the first time in U.S. history, more than one of every 100 adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report documenting America's rank as the world's No. 1 incarcerator. It urges states to curtail corrections spending by placing fewer low-risk offenders behind bars.

Kucinich Fights Back

In this last week before the primary election in Ohio, Kucinich is putting out a TV ad that will absolutely knock your socks off, and you can see it on this page.

Kucinich Fight Back Video: http://www.usalone.com/thank_you_dennis.php

This is the Dennis we will always remember. This is the Dennis we love. This is the Dennis we must KEEP in the U.S. House of Representatives.

And Dennis needs your help right now, to put this spectacular new TV spot on the air in this district in heavy rotation, to demonstrate that he can fight back against the big corporate money trying to unseat him . . . and he will win.

There are only six days left, and your contribution right now can shine the light of truth on just what Dennis stands for, and blow away all obfuscation like it was so much the smoke that it is.

Some bandy about the word "change" as if all change were good. But we say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. And Dennis does not need to be fixed. He has consistently been the strongest voice in all of Congress for every progressive policy initiative. And that is why the corporate special interests are so desperate to knock him out.

That's not going to happen.

Just so long as we do everything we could have possibly done to stand with him and support him now, when he himself is so wrongfully under attack. Please send the link below to absolutely everyone who cares about saving our democracy.

Kucinich Fight Back Video: http://www.usalone.com/thank_you_dennis.php

And just you watch. As soon as the distraction of the mean-spiriting primary challenge is dispensed with, he'll be leading the charge once again on impeachment and everything else. After all he has already done, the man deserves a couple weeks off to take care of election business at home.

And to thank you for your valiant support, Dennis wants you to have as his gift to you a copy of his special Kucinich commemorative edition pocket constitution, with your donation of $100 or more. And if you are one of the few who have not be blindsided by Cheney's gut-the-economy agenda, Dennis Kucinich will personally autograph your copy with your donation of $1,000 or more.

Please note that even if you had already donated the full legal limit to his brave presidential run, which had a real impact in shifting the debate, you can donate another $2,300 for his congressional seat defense.

But even if you can't make a donation right now, there is still something incredibly important you can do to help, and that is to send links to the video to anyone you can. So ask all your friends to visit the page below too.

Kucinich Fight Back Video: http://www.usalone.com/thank_you_dennis.php

So please do what you can to spread the word that this is a must win, must-keep situation. It is only because of the courage of Dennis Kucinich in standing strong to protect and defend the Constitution that we are where we are now, with more and more members of Congress clamoring for meaningful impeachment hearings, and the House still holding the line against that craven telecom immunity thing.

Let us not be complacent. Let us not take anything for granted just because Dennis is so amazing on every issue. We have to make sure that we empower Dennis to remind his constituents what a magnificent job he has been doing for them and for us all. And nothing would push impeachment forward more than the most clearcut victory for Dennis in his primary.

Paid for by the Re-Elect Congressman Kucinich Committee

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Congress to Bush: You've Lost Mail

Dan Froomkin writes in The Washington Post, "The Bush White House has made a mockery of the Presidential Records Act and its requirement that official White House records - including e-mails - be preserved for posterity." And, Daniel Schulman writes in Mother Jones, "Since as early as 2004, the National Archives has warned the White House that its system for preserving email records was inadequate-and that some of those emails may not have been archived at all, but the Bush administration has been slow to remedy the problem."

Food and the Specter of Malthus

Mark Thirlwell of The Financial Times writes: "Last week, financial markets experienced that 1970s feeling, as a combination of rising inflation and unemployment in the US triggered unwelcome memories of the decade of stagflation. Then came this week's report that the United Nations world food program might have to ration food aid. Set against a backdrop of rising food prices worldwide - global food prices have now risen by more than 75 percent since their lows of 2000, jumping more than 20 percent in 2007 alone - the news revived fears from a much earlier era, conjuring up the Reverend Thomas Malthus."

Iraqi Leaders Veto Law Bush Administration Hailed as Political Breakthrough

Steve Lannen reports for McClatchy Newspapers: "Iraq's three-man presidency council Wednesday announced that it's vetoed legislation that US officials two weeks ago hailed as significant political progress.... The rejected bill, which sets out the political structure for Iraq's provincial governments and establishes a basis for elections in October, was only the second of 18 US-set political benchmarks that the war-tore nation needs to reach."

Liberal Democrats Seek Secret FISA Session

Mike Soraghan reports for The Hill: "Liberal House Democrats are pushing for a closed session to discuss the legal underpinnings of President Bush’s intelligence surveillance program. They believe that the more members know about it, the less likely they will be to support Bush’s wish to make it permanent." Meanwhile, The Washington Post's Dan Eggen reports, "Republicans are convinced that highlighting their counterterrorism policies will be a political winner in this presidential election year, and they have focused this week on Democratic opposition to their version of a new surveillance bill as a way to paint Democrats as soft on national security, according to GOP lawmakers and their aides."

Phone mast plans delay

CONTROVERSIAL plans to erect a 20ft telephone mast on a social club are still up in the air.

The owners of Owton Manor Social Club, in Wynyard Road, Hartlepool, want permission to install the O2 mobile telephone mast on their building.

The club applied for planning permission last year but the application was rejected over public health fears and concerns that the height and design would be detrimental to the area.

Council admits phone mast blunder

The phone mast that has sprung up in Exning Road

By Robert Andrews

A COUNCIL blunder that led to a mobile phone mast being put up in Exning Road has left residents fuming.

The 30ft mast which resembles a lamp post, has been installed by mobile phone company O2 on the new leisure centre site next to Newmarket College.

Jim Stevenson, community liaison manager for O2, claimed the company had written to nearby residents telling them the mast was going to be put up.

But residents contacted by the Journal said they had received nothing, while some did not even realise the new structure was a phone mast.

Gitmo’s shambolic trials

This has been another terrible week for Guantanamo’s Military Commissions, established by Dick Cheney and his close advisors in November 2001 to try, convict and execute those responsible for 9/11 through a novel process so far removed from the US court system and the military’s own judicial procedures that the tainted fruit of torture would be allowed, and secret evidence could be withheld from the accused...

The liars are at it again

The Price of Liberty
by Ed Henry

02/25/08

Social Security supports itself with revenue from Payroll Taxes. What’s more, Social Security produces an annual surplus that the government steals and spends elsewhere, what would be labeled a capital crime were it committed in the private sector. Last Year, fiscal 2007, that surplus was $82.4 billion. What’s more, the accumulated surpluses amount to the mind boggling figure of $2.2 trillion as of the end of the last calendar year. All of this is faithfully reported in the U.S. Treasury’s Monthly Statement, table 8, and third from the last page. Follow these reports and it will be difficult to believe that Social Security needs to be ‘fixed’ or requires ’saving.’ The only thing Social Security needs is to force the government to keep its grubby hands off surpluses and allow the Social Security Administration to do what’s right with the people’s money...

No country for grouchy old men

Denver Post
by David Harsanyi

02/25/08

Political observers have questioned whether Americans are ‘ready’ to elect a woman or an African-American to the presidency. A more pertinent question, actually, is whether Americans are ready to elect a grouchy old white guy. According to a Gallup poll, only 5 percent of Americans would never vote for an African-American, while 11 percent claim they would never vote for a woman. Believe it or not, comparatively, those are optimistic numbers — if you believe in polls that solidify your world view, like I do. Republican candidate John McCain is hamstrung by a more worrisome factor. He will be 72 by the time the November election rolls around...

Bei BMW ist Rendite wichtiger als Menschen

28. Februar 2008

WAR's March Madness - Day 2
Protest Huntingdon Life Sciences Customers in New York City
Sunday, 3-2-08 at 2:00 PM

Join Win Animal Rights as we conclude the opening weekend of our March Madness Campaign. To find out more about March Madness, visit the WAR website and click on the Skull & Bones.

http://war-online.org/

On Sunday, we turn our attention back to the puppy killing, animal torturing scum of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). HLS is a company whose primary business is death and suffering. 500 animals are killed there every day. On Sunday, March 2nd, we will focus on key executives of two of Huntingdon Life Science's most important customers: Novartis and Bristol-Myers Squibb. We will start the day with a protest at one of New York City's busiest Staples Stores. Staples has been caught delivering supplies to HLS in unmarked trucks. Cheeky, eh? Next week we will be posting an action alert with full details and contact information on your local Staples stores.

Date/Time: Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Meet at: Staples, 2248 Broadway (80th & 81st) - New York City
If you are late: call 646-267-9934

We will be at the location noted above for approximately one hour, after which we will move on to other upper westside locations. Please dress for the weather. Cold weather gear (gloves, scarves, hats, layers of socks and good walking shoes) will help you to be comfortable as we travel between locations.

When making your plans, please consider that there are 70,000 animals trapped inside of Huntingdon Life Sciences right now. Some are violently ill while others pace their cold steel cages and dank concrete pens waiting to be poisoned or mutilated for toothpaste or some new chemical or food additive. You are their only hope. Please, please stop whatever you are doing and make plans to join us on Sunday when we will visit the homes of key executives that are responsible for supporting Huntingdon Life Sciences. If you cannot join us, you can send messages to:

Dr. Arun Nadiga Novartis Investor Relations
608 Fifth Ave. New York, NY 10020
Phone: 1.212.830.2444
e-mail: arun.nadiga@novartis.com

Note: in previous e-mails we asked you to contact Ronen Tamir of Novartis. We are pleased to report that Mr. Tamir recently left Novartis and is working for a company that does not do business with HLS.

345 Park Ave. New York, NY 10154

e-mail: james.robinson@bms.com

As always, please keep all correspondence with the above polite and informative. A picture is worth a thousand words. You can find pictures at:

Parents’ protest: mobile mast makes waves

Published: February 28, 2008, 09:30
