The Growth of Local Power Is a Bright Spot in Seven Bleak Years of Bush

Rebecca Solnit writes in The Guardian UK, "The centre cannot hold, and that's the good news in the United States these days. Quietly, doggedly, cities, regions, counties and states have refused to march to the Bush administration's drum when it comes to climate change, the environment and the war."

Urgent: Protest Bush's Plan to Kill Yellowstone Area Wolves

While most Americans have been celebrating the holidays, officials in the Bush/Cheney Administration have been working behind the scenes to pave the way for the *killing of hundreds of wolves in the Greater Yellowstone area. *

Don't let them get away with it! Urge U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to abandon his efforts to allow states to start killing wolves and stop promoting the premature de-listing of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies.

http://go.care2.com/e/XBPi/sIrE/k.jp

Over the last several weeks, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been quietly moving forward with rule changes that would allow officials in Idaho and Wyoming to begin killing wolves even before gray wolves are removed from the list of federally protected threatened and endangered species.

*This latest proposal would jump start plans to use fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and other means to kill hundreds of wolves in Idaho, leaving just over 200 wolves in the state.* In fact, three-quarters of the wolves in the Lolo District of the Clearwater National Forest could be removed ... even before they are de-listed.

And hundreds of wolves in Wyoming could be shot and trapped under the new rules, whether wolves are removed from the endangered and threatened species list or not.

A decision on this devastating proposal is expected in the next few weeks. *Take a stand now.*

Please email Secretary Kempthorne right now and let him know that you oppose any proposal that would threaten the long-term future of wolves in the Northern Rockies and Greater Yellowstone Region.

http://go.care2.com/e/XBPi/sIrE/k.jp

Our partners at Defenders of Wildlife are mustering their resources to fight these terrible proposals in the weeks ahead. But right now, we need you to speak out for wolves with your message.

Thank you for acting today to save wolves!

Smearing Ron Paul

CounterPunch
by Jacob Hornberger

12/27/07

I couldn’t help but be struck by the vicious smear of Ron Paul by a Virginia Heffernan in the New York Times. …. Sure, politics is a nasty business but I just couldn’t help but wonder why the New York Times would publish garbage like this. Here’s the thrust of Heffernan’s attack: that Ron Paul has received donations from neo-Nazi extremist groups and has spoken at events attended by right-wing extremist individuals. …. Is this ludicrous or what? What are Heffernan and the New York Times suggesting - that Ron Paul, one of the most committed libertarians around, has instead been a closet Nazi the whole time he has been in Congress? Or maybe they’re suggesting that this committed libertarian has, all of a sudden, decided to convert to Nazism. Or maybe they’re saying that libertarians don’t really advocate individual freedom, free markets, and limited government but instead advocate statism and government control over economic activity...

McGovern still on the antiwar path

In These Times
by Laura S. Washington

12/27/07

The old antiwar horse is still kicking. In 1972, South Dakota Sen. George McGovern (once a World War II bomber pilot) won the Democratic presidential nomination on an antiwar platform. In 2007, he’s still got game. In March 2007, McGovern called on Vice President Dick Cheney to resign. A month later, opining in the Los Angeles Times, he revisited the trauma of the Vietnam War era and excoriated George W. Bush and Cheney for blithely sacrificing American lives once again. ‘We, of course, already know that when Cheney endorses a war, he exempts himself from participation,’ he wrote. ‘On second thought, maybe it’s wise to keep Cheney off the battlefield — he might end up shooting his comrades rather than the enemy’...

Creeping Fascism: History’s lessons

Consortium News

by Ray McGovern

12/27/07

You don’t have to be a Nazi. You can just be, well, a sheep. In his journal Sebastian Haffner decries what he calls the “sheepish submissiveness” with which the German people reacted to a 9/11-like event, the burning of the German Parliament (Reichstag) on Feb. 27, 1933. Haffner finds it quite telling that none of his acquaintances “saw anything out of the ordinary in the fact that, from then on, one’s telephone would be tapped, one’s letters opened, and one’s desk might be broken into.”But it is for the cowardly politicians that Haffner reserves his most vehement condemnation. Do you see any contemporary parallels here?

Stephanie Seay of the Buffalo Field Campaign on the slaughter of wild buffalo

http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/06/10/18426620.php

George Cadman of Free Radio Santa Cruz 101.1 fm interviews Stephanie Seay, media coordinator of the Buffalo Field Campaign about the Montana state and the federal govt. practice of capturing wild buffalo on public lands and slaughtering them or transporting them hundreds of miles in trucks or trains. In Montana in the last two weeks state and federal authorities planned to slaughter 300 wild buffalo, including calves and their mothers. It was stopped by the BFC and public outcry, but this is not the first time this has happened. In the last 7 years the government has trucked 2,000 wild buffalo to slaughter, 1,000 last year alone. Stephanie also talks about the cattle industry, the power they hold in Montana and how they influence decision making on the treatment of wild buffalo, the huge subsidies that the industry receives, and their access to public lands. And she discusses what concerned citizens can do to help defend the last remaining wild buffalo in North America.

Study says paper trail needed in ballot box

Tennessean

12/24/07

A vocal group of voters who want more tangible voting records gained more ammunition with a report out this month that urges backing up electronic ballots with a paper trail. But the $25 million endeavor isn’t likely to take place before the 2008 presidential election as some have hoped, said state Coordinator of Elections Brook Thompson. Thompson wants to wait until federal guidelines for voting machines come down before making the big-ticket buy. ‘We need the time and money to do that,’ Thompson said. ‘To completely change out our systems may cause more problems than the potential problems you’re trying to solve’...

Ron Paul: What Does Freedom Really Mean?

Few Americans understand that all government action is inherently coercive. If nothing else, government action requires taxes. If taxes were freely paid, they wouldn't be called taxes, they'd be called donations. If we intend to use the word freedom in an honest way, we should have the simple integrity to give it real meaning: Freedom is living without government coercion. So when a politician talks about freedom for this group or that, ask yourself whether he is advocating more government action or less.
