Online-Protestaktion zum Gentechnikgesetz

Umweltinstitut München e.V. - Newsletter vom 31. Oktober 2007

Why Did We Invade Iraq Anyway?

Michael Schwartz, writing for TomDispath.com, says: "Why is occupying Iraq so 'vital' to those 'national security interests' of ours? None of this makes sense if you don't have the patience to drill a little beneath the surface and into the past; if you don't take into account that, as former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz once put it, Iraq 'floats on a sea of oil'; and if you don't consider the decades-long US campaign to control, in some fashion, Middle East energy reservoirs. If not, then you can't understand the incredible tenaciousness with which George W. Bush and his top officials have pursued their Iraqi dreams or why - now that those dreams are clearly so many nightmares - even the Democrats can't give up the ghost."

Iraq, Afghan Vets at Risk for Suicides

Kimberly Hefling, reporting for The Associated Press, writes: "Mary Gallagher did not get a knock at the door from a military chaplain with news of her Marine husband's death in a faraway place. Instead, the Iraq war veteran committed suicide eight months after returning home. She is left wondering why."

Fight for Freedom 1807- 2007 Declaration

Support for our Fight for Freedom 1807-2007 campaign has been fantastic so far. Over 40,000 people have now signed the Declaration calling for measures to address slavery past and present.

Please renew your efforts, as the end of 2007 approaches, to get the Declaration as widely signed and supported as possible. Hundreds of thousands of ordinary people signed petitions as part of the campaign to abolish the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Today we are building a new mass movement against slavery, so please continue to collect signatures for the Declaration. You can forward the link to the Declaration http://www.antislavery.org/2007/actionsign.php to your friends, family and colleagues and encourage them to sign. You can also download extra copies of the Declaration to circulate here http://www.antislavery.org/2007/download/signthedeclarationdoc.doc .

Mukasey Refuses to Offer Opinion on Waterboarding

Dan Eggen reports for The Washington Post, "Attorney general nominee Michael B. Mukasey told Senate Democrats yesterday that a kind of simulated drowning known as waterboarding is 'repugnant to me,' but he said he does not know whether the interrogation tactic violates US laws against torture."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/103107J.shtml

Leahy "Very Concerned" With Mukasey's Answer on Waterboarding

Alexander Bolton, reporting for The Hill, writes: "Michael Mukasey attempted to advance his stalled nomination for attorney general Tuesday by giving Congress a written statement discussing the legality of waterboarding, an interrogation technique that simulates drowning. Mukasey submitted a four-page legalistic discussion that did not give Democrats what they were demanding: a succinct statement on whether waterboarding is akin to torture."

Mast profits battle rages

By Gerran Grimshaw

CONTROVERSY over Selby's telecommunications mast rumbles on following a decision that will leave the district council with a much bigger share of the profits.

North Yorkshire Police and Selby District Council currently take profits from allowing third parties - such as mobile phone companies - to use the facility.

PARENTS TO FIGHT ON OVER MAST AT SCHOOL

09:00 - 31 October 2007

Parents say they will keep fighting to remove a mobile phone mast from outside a school.

The pledge comes after Notts County Council apparently ignored calls to remove the mast close to Lowe's Wong Junior and Infant Schools.

Campaigners have collected 1,600 names on a protest petition, which they have handed in to the county council. But the petition looks set to be thrown out at a full council meeting tomorrow.

Fires of the feds: How the government has destroyed forests

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by William L. Anderson

10/25/07

As the wildfires in California and elsewhere burn forests, homes, and businesses, and as a Katrina-sized evacuation continues, environmentalists and the media are making new claims: these disasters are the results of global warming. According to a recent ‘60 Minutes’ broadcast and new claims on CNN, global warming is causing these newest disasters, and if we wish to have fewer fires in the future, we need to ‘change our lifestyles’ now...

People who live in glass houses

LewRockwell.Com
by Michael S. Rozeff

There are only two ways to go in the Middle East: get out or get in deeper. Getting out is wiser. That will reduce the threats. Getting out requires that America reverse course. This course was set in 1787 but the ship of state didn’t set its full sails until 1898 and the Spanish-American War. Since then, the ship has become a Titanic speeding along as it heads for its iceberg. Changing course is the only way to avoid the collision and sinking of the ship. The alternative to getting out is to get in deeper, such as by attacking Iran and Syria. Bush, Cheney, and Rice have opted for this course. The U.S. Congress has for years taken an anti-Iran stance. What will be the result of getting in deeper? Under the best of circumstances, the U.S. will be involved in occupations that will last a very long time. The U.S. stayed for 50 years in the Philippines. It has been in Korea and other places around the world for 50-60 years and counting. Bush has said that the war on terror will take 100 years...

The 'Orwellian' Bush administration

The Bush administration continues to insist that it alone must decide whether a judge is allowed to hear a case that might harm national security. When Judge Harry Pregerson, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, listened to Deputy Solicitor General Gregory Garre telling him that, he responded: "The bottom line here is the government declares something is a state secret, and that's the end of it. The king can do no wrong".

http://www.ngo-online.de/ganze_nachricht.php?H=N&Nr=16868

1. November 2007

THE PEOPLE VS. THE WAR PROFITEERS

Over the past 16 years, Grayson has litigated dozens of cases of contractor fraud. In many of these, he has found the Justice Department to be an ally in exposing wrongdoing. But in cases that involve the Iraq war, the D.O.J. has taken extraordinary steps to stand in his way. Behind its machinations, he believes, is a scandal of epic proportions -- one that may come to haunt the legacy of the Bush administration long after it is gone.

Sue Pleming, reporting for Reuters, writes, "Facing staff shortages in Iraq, the US State Department announced on Friday that diplomats would have no choice but to accept one-year postings in the hostile environment or face losing their jobs."

Fearing Fear Itself

Paul Krugman, writing for The New York Times, says: "In America's darkest hour, Franklin Delano Roosevelt urged the nation not to succumb to 'nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror.' But that was then. Today, many of the men who hope to be the next president - including all of the candidates with a significant chance of receiving the Republican nomination - have made unreasoning, unjustified terror the centerpiece of their campaigns."

Immunity Deal Hampers Blackwater Inquiry

Lara Jakes Jordan reports for The Associated Press: "The State Department promised Blackwater USA bodyguards immunity from prosecution in its investigation of last month's deadly shooting of 17 Iraqi civilians.... The immunity deal has delayed a criminal inquiry into the Sept. 16 killings and could undermine any effort to prosecute security contractors for their role in the incident that has infuriated the Iraqi government."

US Arms Exports Up, Oversight Down

Truthout's Maya Schenwar reports: "The Bush administration hopes to push through two license-free arms sales treaties before the end of this Senate session. Both would eliminate much of the oversight that governs international weapons trades. The treaties, one with the United Kingdom and one with Australia, exemplify a growing trend of weakening restrictions on arms exports, even as fears of weapons proliferation intensify worldwide."

No place to hide: War Criminals Beware, Justice Ahead

In Paris last week, Rumsfeld left a prestigious speaking event in haste, slipping out a side door to avoid the human rights lawyers and journalists waiting to confront him with criminal charges of torture. He reportedly avoided the confrontation by sneaking out a door that attached the conference venue to, of all places, the United States Embassy.

The American Police State

The government has closed seven Muslim charities in the United States and frozen their assets. Not one of them, or any person associated with them, has been found guilty of financing terrorism. They will remain shut. George W. Bush can tar any organization or individual, here or abroad, as being part of a terrorist conspiracy and by fiat render them powerless.

Mobile phone giant, Vodafone, is hoping to install antennae and satellite dishes in a mast share deal with O2, which already occupies a 20-metre mast on the site.

The Southern Water reservoir has been the subject of much protest in the past as the surrounding area is mainly residential with Sarum Road Hospital and Kings' School Boarding House close by.

Bt Crops Threaten Aquatic Ecosystems

ISIS Press Release 30/10/07

Scientists find wastes from transgenic Bt corn impair growth of common aquatic insect and call on future risk assessment to include aquatic ecosystems previously overlooked. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

In 2006, 35 percent of the 33.1 million hectares of the corn planted in the United States was transgenic, modified to express the Bt toxin Cry1Ab from Bacillus thuringiensis. Bt corn is widely planted in the Midwestern US, often next to headwater streams. Yet, no environmental impact studies have been made of Bt crop by-products on stream insects such as caddisflies (trichopterans), which are common in streams, and closely related to the lepidopterans (butterflies and moths) targeted by the Cry1Ab protein in Bt corn.

As a group, the caddisflies have diverse feeding habbits. Some are filter- feeders, others scrape bioflims off submerged surfaces, and still others feed on detritus. All these caddisflies may consume Bt corn by-products.

A team of scientists led by Emma J. Rosi-Marshall at:Loyola University Chicago in Illinois have now carried out the first study on the fate of transgenic Bt corn wastes in headwater streams next to the fields and their impact on the caddisflies [1]

Existenzgeld Reloaded
