The New York Times: Putting Poor Children Second

The editors of The New York Times write: "President Bush’s justification for vetoing a bill to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or S-chip, is that he wants to 'put poor children first' rather than extend coverage to middle-class children. That explanation would be more believable if Mr. Bush had actually been putting poor children first. On far too many occasions, the president has sacrificed the interests of poor children to what he deems higher budgetary or ideological priorities. Congress should not allow Mr. Bush to do the same with S-chip."

Mobile phone mast victory

DAVID BALE

18 October 2007 08:58

Families fighting plans for a mobile phone mast in a busy residential area are celebrating today after the phone company has set its sights on a new location in open countryside.

Communications giant T-Mobile wanted to put an 11.7m mast on land opposite the Crown pub in Norwich Road, Costessey, but families living close to the site were in uproar and plans were turned down by South Norfolk Council earlier this year.

Nur noch leihweise? Widerstand gegen Sklavenhandel

Ron Paul wins polls, gets repeatedly disrespected by CNBC

Mother Jones
by Jonathan Stein

10/16/07

Another debate, another post-debate poll won by an underdog candidate and then hidden by the media outlet commissioning the poll. Sounds outrageous, but it’s almost becoming routine, particularly with Kucinich on the left and Ron Paul on the right. It happened again after the recent Republican debate on CNBC. Ron Paul’s supporters pounced on the post-debate online poll and gave their man a hefty lead, only to find the poll removed. CNBC.com managing editor Allen Wastler eventually ‘explained’ himself — by saying, petulantly, that he’d do it again...

Dissent from the front lines

Truthdig
by Robert Scheer

When will we listen to the troops? I’m not talking about soldiers used as props for a George Bush photo op, telling reporters what Washington wants to hear. The military is disciplined and thus accustomed, from Gen. David Petraeus on down, to toeing the official line. But the Iraq war has also produced brilliant messages of dissent from the ranks that should cause us to stop in our tracks and reconsider what we have wrought. First, a group of sergeants came forward, and on Tuesday it was the captains’ turn to speak out. … How come those brave veterans know it’s time to get out, but leading Democrats, who voted for the war to be authorized, are still pussyfooting about quickly removing the troops from this ever-deepening quagmire?

China now exerts enormous influence over the economies of virtually every country in the world, and a slight change in its domestic economic policy has the potential to send shockwaves rippling throughout the world. Nowhere is this more apparent-and frightening-then in China's economic relationship with the United States, which is very much at the mercy of China when it comes to prices, wages, interest rates, most importantly, the value of the Dollar.

U.S. Path Towards Fascism

Talk by Naomi Wolf author of "The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot" given October 11, 2007 at Kane Hall on the University of Washington campus.

Americans expect to have freedom around us just as we expect to have air to breathe, so we have only limited understanding of the furnaces of repression that the Founders knew intimately. Few of us spend much time thinking about how "the system" they put in place protects our liberties. We spend even less time, considering how dictators in the past have broken down democracies or quelled pro-democracy uprisings.

Blackwater: Mercenaries by Definition

By A. Alexander

Erik Prince, founder of the Blackwater mercenaries, has been a huge financial supporter of George W. Bush and the Republican Party. That might explain why Mister Bush's State Department worked with Prince's people to try and cover up the latest Blackwater slaughter of civilians in Iraq, and could be a big part of the reason why so many Republicans came to the chief mercenary's defense during Congressional hearings. His fondness for and belief in all things Republican probably answers too, Erik Prince's problem with honesty.

--------

The decline of bees worldwide

The h.e.s.e. project has put together a comprehensive and excellent compilation about the 'Decline of bees, UK and worldwide'.

Is this decline due to the rise in microwave radiation worldwide?

I hope that you will take the time to read and pass on, this important information to others.

Martin

Studies are ongoing, including in Australia/NZ where the season for bees emerging is beginning.

Protest over bid for church phone mast

nlnews@archant.co.uk

17 October 2007

A MASS protest is to be held outside a Muswell Hill church on Sunday after the minister and parish council decided to press ahead and apply for permission to put a mobile phone mast on the spire.

Campaigners claim that more than 800 signatures have been lodged against plans by Reverend Bruce Bridgewood to allow 3G to build a mast on St Peter-le-Poer church.

Irak: breites Bündnis fordert Beendigung der US-Besatzung

http://www.meta-info.de/?lid=30607

The New York Times: On Bonuses and Leaving Iraq

The editors of The New York Times write: "There are new signs that an American military in distress is reshaping itself to cope with the destructive fallout of Iraq - and to look beyond it, even as President Bush insists on dispatching Americans to go on fighting and dying there. Young officers have been offered big cash bonuses to stay in an Army struggling to retain them. The Marines, meanwhile, are trying to move out of Iraq and into Afghanistan, a more popular mission where they could focus on America's real enemies - al Qaeda and its allies, the Taliban - instead of trying to police a civil war."

A foreign policy of peace and freedom

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Scott McPherson

10/10/07

The Framers of the U.S. Constitution wisely advised a path of nonintervention in the affairs of other nations. As students of history, America’s first statesmen established peace and free trade as a wiser foreign policy course over militarism, alliance-making, and empire. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, best summed up America’s original philosophy on foreign-policy: ‘America … goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy’...

89 House members to Bush: No more $ for occupation

The Nation
by John Nichols

10/16/07

The occupation in Iraq will begin to end on the day that Democrats — and responsible Republicans — in Congress decide to stop meeting the demands of the Bush-Cheney administration for more money to fund their imperial endeavor along with the massive war-profiteering by administration-linked firms such as Halliburton and Blackwater. This is a simple reality. But it remains one that most members of Congress, including many Democrats who should know better, fail to recognize. The essential document in the current Iraq debate is a letter of commitment, now endorsed by 89 members of the House, that says the signers ‘will only support appropriating additional funds for U.S. military operations in Iraq during FY08 and beyond for the protection and safe redeployment of U.S. troops out of Iraq before the end of President Bush’s term in office’...

UN: Private military recruiting booming

MSNBC

10/16/07

The use of private security guards like those involved in the shooting deaths of Iraqi civilians is part of a growing new form of mercenary activity — the recruitment of people around the globe to perform military jobs in other nations, a U.N. report says. Independent human rights experts who wrote the report, which was obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, say the reported killing of civilians in Iraq last month by guards recruited by the security firm Blackwater USA underscores the risks of using such contractors...

Reporter shield law breezes through House

San Francisco Chronicle

10/16/07

The House overwhelmingly approved a media shield bill Tuesday that would protect reporters from having to reveal their confidential sources in federal courts, despite warnings from the White House that it could lead to more leaks of classified information. The measure was passed on a broad bipartisan vote, 398-21, with 176 Republicans joining virtually all Democrats to support the bill. In an unusual alliance, senior Republican like House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo, broke with the Bush administration to join the majority in passing a bill that supporters said would bolster the freedom of the press...

It's Time For The Banks To Face The Hangman

By Mike Whitney

Officials in the Treasury Dept----working with their colleagues at Citigroup, J.P. Morgan and Bank of America---have concocted a scheme to rescue the banks from their massive losses in mortgage-backed securities. The group is planning to set up a $100 billion emergency fund which will purchase non-performing assets for short term debt. In truth, the fund is a bailout which provides the financial giants with an excuse for not reporting their enormous losses from bad bets.

In The Kingdom of Fear

By Sheila Samples

For six long years, Bush has "water-boarded" all who oppose him -- especially those in Congress -- with a steady stream of 9-11. Each speech is laced with visions of 9-11 -- 9-11 horror just over the horizon, 9-11 around each corner, 9-11 behind each tree. "Fear Itself" is the only option on the Bush-Cheney table, and they have used it relentlessly, not only to wage genocidal war in order to gain control of the world's resources, but to seize dictatorial power and to control the quivering masses.

The Most Dreaded Enemy of Liberty

By James Madison

Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.

The Real Iraq We Knew

By 12 former Army captains

There is one way we might be able to succeed in Iraq. To continue an operation of this intensity and duration, we would have to abandon our volunteer military for compulsory service. Short of that, our best option is to leave Iraq immediately. A scaled withdrawal will not prevent a civil war, and it will spend more blood and treasure on a losing proposition.

Cheney's Law

http://groups.google.de/group/freepage-news/t/a0ec6e3d6c402d7d?hl=en

--------

'CHENEY'S LAW' (ENTIRE PROGRAM ONLINE) - For three decades Vice President Dick Cheney conducted a secretive, behind-closed-doors campaign to give the president virtually unlimited wartime power. Finally, in the aftermath of 9/11, the Justice Department and the White House made a number of controversial legal decisions. Orchestrated by Cheney and his lawyer David Addington, the department interpreted executive power in an expansive and extraordinary way, granting President George W. Bush the power to detain, interrogate, torture, wiretap and spy -- without congressional approval or judicial review.
