GOP Says They'll Continue Racist Voter Suppression Tactics

Steven Rosenfeld reports for AlterNet: "In 2004, Republicans used a Jim Crow-era tactic to target the voter registrations of a half-million likely Democratic voters -- often minorities -- for Election Day challenges in nine states, a national voting rights group has charged in a new report." Also, Greg Gordon reports for McClatchy Newspapers: "Ohio and Florida, which provided the decisive electoral votes for President Bush's two razor-thin national election triumphs, have enacted laws that election experts say will help Republicans impede Democratic-leaning minorities from voting in 2008."

Iraq Will Have to Wait

Scott Ritter writes for Truthdig.com: "While the antiwar movement focuses its limited resources on trying to leverage real congressional opposition to the war in Iraq, which simply will not happen before the 2008 election, the Bush administration and its Democratic opponents will outflank the antiwar movement on the issue of Iran, pushing forward an aggressive agenda in the face of light or nonexistent opposition. Of the two problems (the reality of Iraq, the potential of Iran), Iran is by far the more important."

Attorney Talks About Lawsuit Against Bush, NSA Over Wiretaps

Truthout's Jason Leopold writes: "Recently, I sat down with attorney Jon Eisenberg who sued George W. Bush, the National Security Administration (NSA), and other federal agencies, on behalf of two Washington DC-based lawyers who allege their telephone calls were illegally monitored by the NSA in March 2004. The lawyers, Wendell Belew and Asim Ghafoor, appear to be the only American citizens who say they have hard evidence that proves the government spied on them."

The Examiner opens the story by saying, "President Bush is quietly providing back-channel advice to Hillary Rodham Clinton, urging her to modulate her rhetoric so she can effectively prosecute the war in Iraq if elected president.".........

Karen DeYoung and Michael Abramowitz report for The Washington Post: "Less than a month before the US invasion of Iraq, Saddam Hussein signaled that he was willing to go into exile as long as he could take with him $1 billion and information on weapons of mass destruction, according to a report of a Feb. 22, 2003, meeting between President Bush and his Spanish counterpart published by a Spanish newspaper yesterday." Also, Ernesto Ekaizer reports for El Pais Spain that "During a long conversation with then Spanish president Jose Maria Aznar, held Saturday February 22, 2003 at the Crawford, Texas Ranch, Bush made clear that the moment had arrived to remove Saddam. Fethard residents call for removal of phone mast

Wednesday September 26 2007

RESIDENTS IN Fethard are calling on the local GAA Club to pull its ties with O2 and to support the removal of the company's mobile phone at St. Mogue's.

The O2 mobile phone mast at St. Mogue's GAA pitch is still in place, despite an enforcement order being placed on O2 Communications by Wexford County Council.

Residents in the area are now hoping that Wexford County Council will refuse planning permission for the retention of the O2 mast on the basis that 41 personal objections have been submitted to the council and 500 signatures were submitted to the Committee of St. Mogue's GAA Club.

Could You Explain a Vote Against Children's Health to the Children?

Glenn W. Smith, of the Rockridge Institute, asks: "if those in US House or Senate inclined to sustain a presidential veto of a bill that will provide basic health care to more than 3 million additional American children, ask yourselves this question: Are you willing to explain your decision to a schoolroom of fragile young children who cannot afford treatment for whooping cough or measles, leukemia or juvenile diabetes? Are you willing to explain this to them, human to human? The US House voted overwhelmingly for an expanded children's health care program (SCHIP), 265-159. President George W. Bush has said he will veto any expansion of the program, and supporters fear they will fall short of votes necessary to override Bush's veto."

Blackwater Logs Most Shootings of Firms in Iraq

John M. Broder and James Risen, of The New York Times, report "the American security contractor Blackwater USA has been involved in a far higher rate of shootings while guarding American diplomats in Iraq than other security firms providing similar services to the State Department, according to Bush administration officials and industry officials. Blackwater is now the focus of investigations in both Baghdad and Washington over a Sept. 16 shooting in which at least 11 Iraqis were killed. Beyond that episode, the company has been involved in cases in which its personnel fired weapons while guarding State Department officials in Iraq at least twice as often per convoy mission as security guards working for other American security firms, the officials said."

Gewerkschaftliche Proteste gegen Hartz IV

Antrag B 36 vom Bundeserwerbslosenausschuss http://bundeskongress2007.verdi.de/antraege_beschluesse/antrag.html?cat=B&sort=36

1-Euro-Jobs. Dazu gehören u.a.:

Council to serve notice in mast row

By Rob Devey

A FIGHT against a 40ft phone mast installed despite being refused planning permission will tomorrow be stepped up as Bolton Council serve an enforcement notice.

The council will post the notice to T-Mobile requring the firm to remove the mast from the Market Street precinct in Little Lever within 28 days.

It was put up on Sunday despite a decision by the council's planning committee in April to reject the application.

The council's move comes after company agents refused to remove the mast voluntarily.

What free country?

Rebirth of Reason
by Tibor R. Machan

09/26/07

When I first arrived on these shores, back in 1956, the idea that America is a free country had at least some rhetorical currency, backed by frequent enough association between the country’s founding documents and the desirability and undesirability of various public policies. Just as Abraham Lincoln, so many others who addressed what kind of laws the country ought to have tended still to invoke the authority of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and ideas from the Founders and Framers. Not that it was all hunky dory with the country then or, indeed, before. But the prevalence of ideas of basic rights — the kind that marked out one’s personal, private dominion — and liberty — of the negative sort, freedom from intrusions by others, including governments — was in plenty of evidence in public discussions, debates in Congress and so forth. Today there seems no one — other than the lone Texas Representative Ron Paul — on the political scene who is concerned with the freedom of American citizens...

Bush’s fiscal legacy: bigger debt

Whatever happens over the next 16 months, President Bush will leave office having presided over one of the fastest accumulations of government debt in the history of the United States. During his time in office, federal debt held by the public -– Washington’s equivalent of a credit-card balance -– will have increased by more than 50 percent, to about $5.5 trillion. Uncle Sam will be paying interest on that sum for years to come. Much of that borrowed money paid for military expenses after the 9/11 attacks -– spending unanticipated when Mr. Bush took office. Judge Rules Provisions in Patriot Act to Be Illegal

Susan Jo Keller, of The New York Times, reports: "a federal judge in Oregon ruled Wednesday that crucial parts of the USA Patriot Act were not constitutional because they allowed federal surveillance and searches of Americans without demonstrating probable cause. The Conflicted Consumer

An excerpt from Robert Reich's new book "Supercapitalism: The Transformation of Business, Democracy, and Everyday Life" (Alfred A. Bush Gets Dinner While Protesters Fast

Truthout's Kelpie Wilson writes: "More than 80 heads of state met at the UN on Monday to discuss the launch of post-Kyoto climate negotiations. Although this was the most high-level UN meeting yet held on the global climate emergency, President Bush refused to attend. He did, however, assent to an invitation from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to attend a private dinner afterward.... While Bush was eating his dinner with Ban ki-Moon, a half-dozen American climate change activists continued a weeks-long fast to protest American inaction on climate, 'so that others might eat.'"

A plea from the Iranian people

Common Dreams

The people of Iran are experiencing difficult times both internationally and domestically. Internationally, they face the threat of a military attack from the US and the imposition of extensive sanctions by the UN Security Council. Domestically, a despotic state has — through constant and organized repression — imprisoned them in a life-and-death situation. Far from helping the development of democracy, US policy over the past fifty years has consistently been to the detriment of the proponents of freedom and democracy in Iran...

Easy out

The American Conservative
by Gregory Cochran

09/24/07

Politicians, for the most part, have accepted statements about withdrawal requiring anywhere from one to two years. They want to be ‘responsible’ — that’ll be the day. Some may have calculated that slow withdrawal might better disguise defeat and thus be more politically palatable, but I don’t think many are that Machiavellian. I think instead that, with a few honorable exceptions, they’re profoundly ignorant of war and thus have to blindly accept anything the professional military says. That ignorance is, of course, one of the reasons we got into this mess in the first place. That goes double for columnists: in pundit-land, a military expert is someone who thinks that the phalanx is cutting-edge technology. The bottom line is that we can get troops and war-fighting equipment out of Iraq rapidly and relatively safely, certainly in less than six months, probably in three...

Six ways to beat Hillary Clinton

Slate
by John Dickerson

09/25/07

Clinton has consolidated her lead in the polls — she’s up by 17 points nationally and has big leads in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida. The new recognition that she’s pulling away may make this debate more interesting than the 384 that came before it, because the also-rans may decide they have to direct their fire on the front-runner, as trailing Democrats did when Howard Dean opened up a lead in the 2004 campaign. Of course, attacking is risky: Rick Lazio torpedoed his 2000 Senate campaign when he attacked Clinton and came off looking like a cheap thug. Iowa voters, in particular, tend to frown on uppercut politics. And Clinton is a tougher, more skilled, and more disciplined politician than any of her opponents. But she is not invincible...

About a dozen war protesters were arrested Tuesday morning during a peaceful demonstration against President Bush’s speech before the U.N. General Assembly. They were among about 400 protesters opposing the Bush administration’s war in Iraq and its incarceration in Guantanamo Bay of more than 300 men on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaida or the Taliban. Many in the crowd wore orange jumpsuits in solidarity with the Guantanamo detainees. Police took the arrested demonstrators into custody … after they knelt on the sidewalk in an act of civil disobedience at the rally near the United Nations. One of them, 58-year-old Bill Ofenloch, said they were trying to serve an ‘arrest warrant’ on Bush for ‘high crimes against humanity.’ Members of the anti-war group Code Pink performed a bit of street theater where a person wearing a Bush mask was arrested...

The Greatest Dying

Writing for The New Republic, Jerry Coyne and Hopi E. Hoekstra state: "After the Great Dying, as the end-Permian extinction is called, Earth's biodiversity didn't bounce back for more than ten million years. Aside from the Great Dying, there have been four other mass extinctions, all of which severely pruned life's diversity. Scientists agree that we're now in the midst of a sixth such episode. This new one, however, is different - and, in many ways, much worse. For, unlike earlier extinctions, this one results from the work of a single species, Homo sapiens."

Earth Calls for Radical Social Change and Spiritual Transformation

The population bomb has burst, the climate and biosphere are in tatters, and tyrannical, militaristic governments rule; yet there remains a path to global ecological sustainability

Earth Meanders by Dr. Glen Barry
http://earthmeanders.blogspot.com/
September 26, 2007

The Earth is a living organism, which some call Gaia. Humanity is taking apart Gaia's life support systems in an orgy of procreation and consumption. Only radical social change and profound spiritual transformation can save us now.

Radical is not a dirty word. It means markedly new opinions and actions far beyond the norm, often is response to dilemmas that stymie conventional wisdom. Many times in Western history radical political ideas expanded human dignity and opportunity.

In this era of resource gluttony, tyranny and militarism, and post population bomb explosion; the Earth and her humanity are crying out for radical social and ecological change. From one billion to over 6.5 billion people in just over 125 years. Dying oceans, an end to ancient forests, water scarcity, unknown toxins interacting, over-consumption amongst grotesque inequity, and climate processes disintegrating -- all are the face of a dying Earth as humans eat, and shit on, their home.

How can humanity lighten its load upon, and restore, the biosphere's ecological systems; even as plagued by war, injustice, poverty, disease and ignorance?

This is the question of all remaining time, and I welcome all comprehensive, sufficient policy prescriptions. However, I am highly skeptical regarding the ability of liberal democratic capitalism, Islamic fundamentalism, Chinese market communism; nor any other existing religious, political or economic traditions' ability to equitably and justly feed 9 billion people on a failing Planet.

Sometimes radicalism and revolutionary thinking are the only way forward when liberal and conservative status quo responses have failed society and the Earth. Clearly this is now the case as over-population and inequitable over-consumption well beyond the carrying capacity of the Earth threaten the very biological basis of being. Radical political ecologism is the way forward.

Life, biological being, and ecological systems' very existences are threatened. Wanton death and suffering loom. Where to go to escape China's tyranny and America's imperialism, and their combined militaristic and ecocidal drain upon Gaia? Where to go into exile from a collapsing Earth? When and how will the liquidation of life end? Can we end it? How?

These are not my governments. I and my brethren are Earth citizens. This is not my economy. We imperfectly seek to live in a manner that the entire world could enjoy forever. These are not my wars upon the Earth and the poor. Tyrannical and imperialistic governments do not speak for me. This is not my ecological science, demonstrating plodding incautious caution in the face of global ecological collapse. Nor is this my environmental movement, with allegiance to what is in vogue and stylish half-measures rather than a commitment to sufficient truths.

I am repulsed by all their Gods and prophets of war and oppression. In all my life I have really only learned one unique thing: The Earth is Truth. Truth is God. Thus the Earth is God.

What do I mean by this simplistic, transitive statement of my youth? In all my early soul-searching and truth-seeking, the only demonstrably objective truth I could find is my and your utter dependence upon the Earth. We need water, air, land and other elements of good habitat to live. Thus the Earth is Truth.

God has been and is many things to many people, and I strongly suspect we are all pursuing alternative ways to the spirit(s) in the sky and Earth. Yet the idea that this spirit is best exemplified by what is truthful continues to resonate with me as I grow older. The truth found in a beautiful blooming spring flower, a laughing child and an intricate ecosystem is God.

And as every pre-algebra student knows, this leads us to the tautology that the Earth is God. There are many ways to this place of transcendent truth beauty -- philosophical, scientific and ecological intuitions are all equally valid paths to Gaia.

So what shall we do with this knowledge? If the Earth is truly God, which could be called Gaia, then she and all of her lively components are worthy of awe filled worship; and of unflinching, devotional protection at all costs.

Saving the Earth will require embracing Gaia spiritually, and pursuit of radical change on her behalf. We are called back to the land even as we engage the Earth destroying global growth machine. Certainly ending coal use, protecting ancient forests and flying less are worthy and necessary rituals of Gaia worship.

Is the Collapse of the Dollar Near?

by Alan Stang

As I write, the Canadian dollar is at par with our own, which hasn’t happened for more than thirty years. The Saudis for the first time are refusing to follow the Fed’s Bernanke down the chute and Communist-occupied China, which Washington created, is threatening to destroy the dollar by dumping it. The Euro, which started out as an experiment, now stands at an unbelievable $1.40, trending higher. The bond market could collapse. Talk about a possible collapse of the dollar is in the air, and.....

The Canadian government is trying to block observation of the seal hunt

The Canadian government is trying to block observation of the seal hunt, and we have very little time to stop it. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is proposing unconstitutional changes to the Marine Mammal Regulations -- amendments that would effectively block all independent observation of the commercial seal hunt.

Take action! Send your comments to the DFO today!
