Did CIA Kidnap Vacationer? It's a State Secret

Warren Richey reports for The Christian Science Monitor: "In December 2003, German citizen Khaled el-Masri boarded a bus in Germany for a holiday in Skopje, Macedonia. Instead of a restful vacation, the Muslim man of Lebanese heritage says he ended up in a Central Intelligence Agency isolation cell in Afghanistan as a suspected terrorist. He was released after five months of interrogation with no explanation justifying the action or apology if it was a mistake."

No War, No Warming, Rise Up!

Ted Glick writes for Truthout: "The options before us are crystal clear. Down one road, the one we're now on, lies a cascading series of oil and water wars, climate disasters and ecological devastation. Down the other lies a turn toward peaceful resolution of conflicts, energy conservation, efficiency and a clean energy revolution, and social and economic justice. Another world is possible, but for it to come about another US is necessary."

SIR - I must thank Mr Michael Dolan for his letter (Gazette, August 29) in which he seeks to reassure us that mobile phone masts are not harmful.

I am well acquainted with Sir William Stewart's report, from which the important statement emerged that the erection of mobile phone masts should only proceed "with caution." The report also revealed that children are 50 per cent more likely than adults to suffer from the effects of masts and mobile phones and Sir William stated that he would not allow his grandchildren to use mobile phones.

Do Americans owe service to the nation?

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

09/17/07

Why does the idea of ‘national service’ never cease to attract American intellectuals? Every few years some prominent ‘thinker’ proposes that young Americans ’serve their country’ in either a civilian or military capacity. Such service is always promised to have a profound effect on both the nation and the people doing the serving...

Iraq forever?

The American Prospect
by Spencer Ackerman

09/18/07

Having lost the battle over the surge, Democrats in the Senate are back to an incrementalist approach to the war. After Bush endorsed General David Petraeus’s plan to return to pre-surge combat strength of about 130,000 troops in Iraq by the end of July, the Democrats mobilized. Senator Jim Webb, the Vietnam veteran who won his Virginia seat last year on an antiwar platform, will push forward for a third time with his bill mandating that troops serving in Iraq remain at home for at least an equivalent amount of time as their deployments. The bill is a two-fer: Not only does it take a large burden off the Army’s shoulders, but it would, in practice, constrain the Pentagon’s ability to keep troop strength in Iraq at Petraeus’ desired levels...

The mirage of “victory”

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

09/19/07

Iran may not be a ’suicide nation’ — but we are. We’re currently spending ourselves into penury in order to ‘liberate’ a nation that doesn’t want to be ‘liberated,’ and whose populace thinks attacks on our soldiers are justified. Having thrown all of our military resources into this futile, unwinnable war, we are risking everything — our prestige, our economy, our allies — by betting on the mirage of ‘victory.’ What’s more, the lunatics in charge of the asylum are bound and determined to attack Iran, and nothing — not Congress (in the unlikely event they object), not common sense (if our elites should suddenly have a surge of rationality), and not the American people (if they ever wake up from their O.J.-and-Britney-induced narcosis) — is going to stop them...

SENATE READY TO VOTE ON RESTORING HABEAS CORPUS

One of the most shameful failings of the last Congress was allowing the right to writ of Habeas Corpus to be gutted.

But now there is a movement to restore the Constitution sponsored by Senators Leahy, Specter and Dodd, and there could be a vote as soon as Wednesday, Sept 19th.

We all want to make America safe from terrorism, but becoming a nation that sanctions the unlawful detention of its own residents -- detaining and jailing them without the chance to appear before a judge -- does not make us safe. Instead, it violates a value that we have held dear for centuries -- safeguarding our individual freedom before arbitrary state action.

Please call your senators toll free at 800 828-0498, 800 614 2803 or
866 340 9281, and also submit the action page below. ESPECIALLY if you have Republican senators, now is the time to hold their feet to the fire of our voices.

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/restore_habeas.php

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

Campact-News 20/07 Dienstag, 18. September 2007 - Es schreibt: Christoph Bautz (christoph @campact.de)

Weltkindertag: „Keine Kinder zweiter Klasse“

Pressemitteilung vom 18.09.2007

A way for America to assert its moral strength

Christian Science Monitor
by Alex Little

09/18/07

In The Art of War, Sun Tzu, the noted Chinese war strategist, advises military leaders to ‘embrace unexpected tactics.’ Although more than two thousand years old, this advice remains sound. Today, as policymakers struggle to repair America’s reputation abroad, they could borrow a page from Sun Tzu’s book: The United States should join the International Criminal Court (ICC). To date, more than 100 nations have joined the ICC, which is the world’s first permanent international criminal tribunal. It serves as a court of last resort to prosecute genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity when national authorities are unable or unwilling to do so...

Conservatism Isn't What It Used To Be

Today the US media serves as propaganda ministry for the government's wars and police state. Yet, some conservatives continue to rant on about "the liberal media."

The Triumph of Structured Finance

Failing Banks, Toxic Bonds and Mortgage Laundering

By now, you've probably seen the photos of the angry customers queued up outside of Northern Rock Bank waiting to withdraw their money. The pictures are headline news in the UK but have been stuck on the back pages of US newspapers. The reason for this is obvious---the same Force 5 economic-hurricane that just touched ground in Great Britain is headed for America and gaining strength on the way.

Ripple effect could be national omen

To understand how the housing bust may ripple through the broader American economy, look beyond the countless for-sale signs that dot this middle-class city. Instead, stop by Boater's Landing, where salespeople sit idle, hoping someone will once again want to buy a boat.

Working folks across America hear the news that the economy shed jobs last month and start to worry about their own. Businesses become more cautious about planning and hiring, even if their particular company or industry is seeing robust demand.

Democrats Attach Subpoena Compliance to AG Debate

Elana Schor reports for The Hill that Democrats plan to take their time in confirming President Bush's choice of Michael Mukasey as the next attorney general. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said the timeframe for confirmation would depend on the White House's willingness to comply with outstanding subpoenas on its wiretapping program, among other things.

What’s the point?

WHAT is the point of an elected council if the only people they represent are members of the Government?

I refer to the shocking way in which Herefordshire Council recently accepted T-Mobile's application for a mobile phone mast in the centre of Colwall in spite of considerable opposition.

In a very small locality well over 200 people opposed the mast by signing a petition or sending letters of protest. Many of these individuals represent larger community groups, including children. This was clearly a most unpopular proposal.
