The day after the GOP rout, Bush cashiered his war minister, Donald Rumsfeld. In December, the Iraq Study Group, chaired by Bush I Secretary of State James Baker, released its report. … Next April is the date when the Iraq Study Group said all U.S. combat brigades should be out of Iraq. By then, Bush and Petraeus will have tens of thousands more troops in Iraq than when the Democrats were elected and the ISG reported. The lame duck is not all that lame. What happened to the party of Speaker Pelosi and Reid, which was going to end U.S. involvement in the war and not permit Bush to pursue victory the way Richard Nixon pursued it in Vietnam for four years? And he has been using 9/11 ever since to scare Americans into supporting his “war on terror.” He has incessantly linked the words ‘al-Qaida’ and ‘Iraq,’ a Pavlovian device to make us whimper with fear at the mere idea of withdrawing. In a recent speech about Iraq, he mentioned al-Qaida 95 times. No matter that jihadists in Iraq are not the same group that attacked the U.S., or that their numbers and effectiveness have been greatly exaggerated. It’s no surprise that Gen. David Petraeus’ ‘anxiously awaited’ evaluation of the war is to be given on the 10th and 11th of September. The not-so-subliminal message: We must do what Bush and Petraeus say or risk another 9/11. Petraeus’ evaluation can only be ‘anxiously awaited’ by people who are still anxiously waiting for Godot. We know what will happen next because we’ve been watching this movie for eight months...

Politicians of all stripes impose needless pain and suffering on the world. In the West people tend to be wealthy enough to purchase their way around some of the misery. Political policies that drive up food costs, to benefit a few wealthy farmers, are ignored because wealthy Westerners have enough disposable income to pay the extra for food. They may bitch about food prices, and then stupidly blame the wrong cause: globalization, greedy grocers, capitalism, etc., but they don’t go hungry. In poor nations hunger is their only option. The world’s poor can’t buy their way out of the problems inflicted on them by the political class of do-gooders. The wealthy people of the West can. The actions of our politicians are often nothing more than a minor irritation. The same actions, when their consequences are imposed on the poor nations of the world can literally kill.

The FBI cast a much wider net in its terrorism investigations than it has previously acknowledged by relying on telecommunications companies to analyze phone calls of the associates of Americans who had come under suspicion, according to newly obtained bureau records. The documents indicate that the Federal Bureau of Investigation used secret demands for records to obtain data not only on individuals it saw as targets but also details on their ‘community of interest’ — the network of people the target in turn was in contact with. The bureau stopped the practice early this year in part because of broader questions raised about its aggressive use of the records demands, which are known as national security letters, officials said. … The FBI declined to say exactly what data had been turned over. It was limited to people and phone numbers ‘once removed’ from the actual target of the national security letters, said a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a continuing review by the Justice Department...

Property owners in south Donegal have been urged to think twice before allowing mobile phone masts be erected on their buildings.

The appeal comes from Fine Gael Clr., Barry O'Neill who said that medical evidence is mounting which backs up the claim that mobile phone masts and antennae have a negative effect on people's health.
