Protest Destruction of Colombian Rainforests and Livelihoods to Feed Automobiles

RAINFOREST/CLIMATE ALERT

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

Protest Destruction of Colombian Rainforests and Livelihoods to Feed Automobiles

By Climate Ark & Rainforest Portal, projects of Ecological Internet http://www.rainforestportal.org/ and http://forests.org/ September 2, 2007

TAKE ACTION It is gravely unethical and ecologically devastating to expand production of biofuels at the expense of ancient primary rainforests, biodiverse grasslands, local communities and their food sovereignty.

http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=colombia_biofuel

The Colombian government is embarking on a massive expansion of oil palms, sugar cane and other monocultures for agrofuels and other markets at the expense of rainforests, biodiverse grasslands and local communities... Palm oil expansion is linked to large-scale rainforest destruction and to serious violence and human rights abuses. NGOs have documented 113 killings in the river basin of Curvaradó and Jiguamiandó, in Chocó region at the hands of paramilitaries who are working with plantation companies to take over land which legally belongs to Afro-Colombian communities... The Chocó forests which are being destroyed by palm oil expansion are some of the largest remaining coastal lowland rainforests on the Earth and are amongst the most biodiverse forests on Earth. They are home to 7,000 to 8,000 species, including 2,000 endemic plant species and 100 endemic bird species. Even before the current palm oil and agrofuel expansion, 66% had been destroyed. Please write to the Colombian government and ask them to protect the rights of indigenous, Afro- Colombian and peasant communities affected by large-scale monoculture plantations, to stop further deforestation for oil palm plantations, impose a moratorium on further palm oil expansion and on the country’s biofuel programme, which is a major cause of monoculture expansion, and to protect the land rights, the food sovereignty and the environment on which local communities depend. This email alert is supported by the Inter-Church Commission for Justice and Peace
(Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz) in Colombia.

Bush Plans War on Iran

Common Dreams
by Marjorie Cohn

09/02/07

Bush has already set the wheels in motion. With Rovian timing, Alberto Gonzales’ resignation was sandwiched between two Bush screeds — one aimed at ensuring Congress scares up $50 billion more for the occupation of Iraq, the other designed to scare us into supporting war on Iran. As Gonzales rides off into the sunset, the significant questions are who will take his place and how that choice will facilitate Bush’s occupation of Iraq and attack on Iran. One name that’s been floated for Bush’s third attorney general is Joe Lieberman, the ‘independent’ senator from Connecticut. Lieberman, who advocates the use of military force against Iran, was the only person Bush quoted in his August 28 speech to the American Legion. Bush called Iran ‘the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism’ and pledged to ‘confront Tehran’s murderous activities.’ Gonzales greased the Bush/Cheney wheels for torturing in violation of the Geneva Conventions, illegally spying on Americans, and purging disloyal Bushies. Similarly, Lieberman would ensure the Justice Department mounts a vigorous defense of a war of aggression against Iran...

Phone mast rejected

By Laura Williams

Residents of Corsham's Alexander Terrace campaigned against a T-Mobile phone mast

Angry residents were relieved to learn of the council's decision to refuse planning permission for a controversial phone mast.

North Wiltshire District Council's Development Control Committee, in a heated debate on Wednesday night (Aug 29), decided to reject the planning application following objection from dozens of Corsham residents.

Phone provider T-Mobile had applied to erect a 6.5 metre tall telecommunications mast on top of Corsham's old telephone exchange in Alexander terrace.

KOLKATA: A pregnant woman suffered burns in eastern India after the battery of her Nokia mobile phone exploded minutes after she put the handset on charge, police said Saturday.

The Finnish phone maker warned last month in front-page advertisements in leading Indian dailies that some of its batteries were overheating after around 100 such incidents were reported globally.

The battery that exploded was, however from the firm's BL-D3 series, and not from BL-5C that Nokia recalled a month ago, police said.
