Media Power Grab?

PBS presents "Bill Moyers Journal" tonight and asks if there is a media power grab. The FCC is considering new rules that will govern how much control the media titans will have over what we read, see and hear. "Bill Moyers Journal" examines what's at stake for democracy.

Hoekstra Says Iraq Democracy Strategy Is Doomed to Fail

Chris Christoff writes in the Detroit Free Press, "Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, said as the Iraqi government flounders, he's changed his original support for the Bush administration's stated goal of molding a democratic Iraq as a means to stabilize the Middle East."

The Problem Isn't Mr. Maliki

The editors of The New York Times write: "Blaming the prime minister of Iraq, rather than the president of the United States, for the spectacular failure of American policy, is cynical politics, pure and simple. Los Villares will keine Handystrahlen

Masts will not be built after alleged threats

Controversial plans to build two mobile phone masts at Willingdon Golf Club have been scrapped after threats were allegedly made to a member of the club's board.

Vodafone and T-Mobile had both been given permission to put up 15-metre high masts on the course despite objections from hundreds of local residents.

It is believed the club would have received around £12,000 from the deal.

But it has now abandoned the plans, which have taken more than a year to come to fruition, after what it called 'serious and direct threats to individuals and property'.

However, residents are claiming victory saying the club had come to the right decision in the face of public pressure and the threat of anti-mast members leaving the club.

Phone mast plans rejected

By Chloe Lambert

Wandsworth Council last night rejected all eight applications by Orange to build mobile phone masts in Southfields.

The planning committee said the refusals were due to heavy public objection, obstruction to footpaths, and detriment to the visual appearance of the area.

The decision ended months of anxiety for residents in West Hill and East Putney, who said the masts were a health hazard.

You, too, can and should be an “intelligence analyst”

The Power of Narrative
by Arthur Silber

08/22/07

Almost all of our public debate is conducted on the first level of analysis: what various political leaders say their goals and objectives are. In terms of those stated goals, their decisions in foreign policy are uniformly calamitous, and they lead to results that are the opposite of what they claim they hope to achieve. No public figure will admit the truth of the second kind of analysis and, I regret to note, most Americans are not the least bit interested in hearing such unpleasant truths. Nonetheless, they are truths: a huge swath of our economy is now devoted to preparing for war, making war, and cleaning up after war. To one degree or another, most members of Congress are beholden to the economic powers that drive the obsessive concern with war, and its cornucopia of economic opportunity. Both parties are enmeshed in the War State, and the current corporatist warmaking apparatus devours almost all those who go into public service. Until this intricate and complex system is altered, nothing else will change, except in comparatively superficial ways...

How to challenge Iran’s militancy without using arms

Christian Science Monitor
by Marc Gopin & Gregory Meeks

08/23/07

There have been persistent rumors in Washington that President Bush does not want to leave office without ‘doing something’ about Iran. Even more alarming, there have been rumors that Mr. Bush has solicited a green light from Russian President Vladimir Putin for Israel to ‘do something’ about Iran. One of the central problems with the Bush administration is that it thinks military first and sometimes military only — with disastrous results for America. Though military action is an option, the consequences of the United States or Israel attacking Iran would be catastrophic. Fortunately, the American people do not want this to happen. Only 10 percent approve of a military confrontation with Iran, according to a CBS/New York Times poll in March, and most worry about America’s troubled relationship with the Muslim world. A large majority are concerned that the Iraq war is destroying America’s international reputation. They do not want to make matters worse...

The poem reached many people, intensifying efforts of peace activists to stop the war before it started. Sonia continued her efforts on behalf of Iraqi children, even founding an organization called ‘Children Against War’...

The carnage in Iraq: past, present, and future

LewRockwell.Com
by Robert Higgs

08/24/07

The headline of an August 22, 2007, article in the New York Times reads, ‘Citing Vietnam, Bush Warns of Carnage if U.S. Leaves Iraq.’ Readers with live brain cells must be stunned by such a warning. What, exactly, does President Bush imagine is happening every day in Iraq now? Does he envision scenes of social tranquility and cooperative harmony amid the peaceful palms of Mesopotamia? And what, one wonders, does he suppose was going on earlier in Vietnam, as the U.S. forces extended their unwelcome stay year after grisly year? At times, observing the president and listening to his speeches, one simply doesn’t know what to make of him. Is he actually as detached from reality as he appears to be? And do his handlers really believe that at this late date, the American people will take seriously the rhetoric his speech writers persist in putting into his mouth?

Don’t know much about history

Guardian [UK]
by Matthew Yglesias

08/23/07

For months now, many conservatives have been fundamentally positioning themselves for the post-war era, readying the arguments that will blame the failure of the venture in Iraq on its opponents rather than its architects. That Bush himself has chosen to join them is, perhaps, on some level the clearest reflection of the reality that the president knows perfectly well that the war is unwinnable, and blame-shifting now the best hope for saving his historical legacy...

The Iraqis Don't Deserve Us

Always, we have betrayed them. We backed "Flossy" in Yemen. The French backed their local "harkis" in Algeria; then the FLN victory forced them to swallow their own French military medals before dispatching them into mass graves. Plan to Attack Iran Confirmed, Vote on IMPEACHMENT Now

ADMINISTRATION SOURCE CONFIRMS THEIR DETERMINATION TO ATTACK ON IRAN

If you thought the Cheney White House could not be so crazy as to attack Iran given the existing debacle in Iraq, we have news for you. They ARE that crazy. As reported by Time magazine on line yesterday, an administration official declared unilaterally "There will be an attack on Iran", based on the totally bogus assertion that they are the source for the IEDs being used in Iraq. And the only way to stop the insanity is to impeach the Vice President immediately.

ACTION PAGE ON CHENEY IMPEACHMENT: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

Never mind that all anyone has to do is Google the words "missing explosives iraq" and in seconds you will find all the links to how
340 bulk tons of the most powerful military explosives just walked away from the Al Qa'qaa storage depot and others, which HAD been under U.N. seal, until they were left entirely unguarded for a month and a half while the U.S. military was only interested in protecting the oil ministry.

Never mind that all one of the strategic Keystone Cops in the Vice President's office would have to do is Google the words "ieds copper discs" and in seconds they too would find all the links to how local machine shops in Iraq were cranking out the parts needed to make all those IEDS as a cottage industry, given that they now have enough stolen high explosives stockpiled for a 200 year insurgency at current rates of attacks.

And yet still the push is from Cheney's office to tell even bigger lies about Iran than he ever told about Iraq, and to escalate yet another fraudulent casus belli into world war with a billion Muslims,
99.999 percent of whom would have rather just be left alone in peace had we not gone out of our way to bomb their cities.

ACTION PAGE ON CHENEY IMPEACHMENT: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

Remember that Cheney is the originator of the irrational 1 percent doctrine, by which he asserted that even if the chance of potential threat is very small we must act preemptively to take that threat out. As a result of such doctrinaire dogma, 99 percent of the million Iraqis killed so far, and of the millions more made into refugees or maimed, have been innocent bystander civilians. That's a whole lot of hearts and minds. Operating with at most 1 percent intelligence, and
99 percent of the certainty of a paranoid, delusional madman, Dick Cheney has turned U.S. foreign policy into a self-fulfilling disaster.

This is the same Dick Cheney who when interviewed in 1994 explained
(in a private assessment he wishes he could suppress now) what a bad idea it would have been to try to depose Saddam by ourselves all alone with nobody from the region with us, and how it would lead to nothing but a quagmire and Iraq flying apart into sectarian pieces. THAT 9/11 did not change. But were they candid with the American people about the risks of an occupation of Iraq? No, they lied about that too. They told us it would be a six week cake walk with candy and flowers, to sucker us into sacrificing thousands of American lives and a trillion dollar from our treasury to Cheney's war profiteering cronies, only to then tell us that's the reason we can't just leave now.

Only impeachment can save us now. Only impeachment can remove Cheney from office before he executes the final solution leading inevitably to all out nuclear war and to the end of civilization. We do not have time for the next election to save us. With more and more evidence surfacing that the last two presidential elections were stolen outright, with them putting into place secret presidential directives to declare martial law and worse in response to the crisis they themselves are determined to precipitate, only if you speak out now can we save ourselves.

ACTION PAGE ON CHENEY IMPEACHMENT: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

Please cast your vote on the action page above, just as over 100,000 of your fellow alarmed citizens already have, which will send your message in real time to all your members of Congress, and letter to the editor of your nearest daily local newspaper if you like as well. In doing so we can pressure more members of Congress to sign on to H.Res. 333, calling for the impeachment of Vice President Cheney, just as 20 House members already have. If enough of us speak out Congress absolutely will act. All House members are up for reelection. They cannot ignore us all.

Please speak out. Click a mouse one time. We need YOUR voice to join in the mounting calls for impeachment NOW. Please.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

Pitching the Imperial Republic: Bonaparte and Bush on Deck

Juan Cole writes for TomDispatch: "French Egypt and American Iraq can be considered bookends on the history of modern imperialism in the Middle East.... There are many eerily familiar resonances between the two misadventures, not least among them that both began with supreme arrogance and ended as fiascoes. Above all, the leaders of both occupations employed the same basic political vocabulary and rhetorical flimflammery, invoking the spirit of liberty, security, and democracy while largely ignoring the substance of these concepts."

Loan Sharks Wreak Havoc on Main Street and Wall Street

Jim Hightower writes for Hightower Lowdown: "This is one of those economic stories, like the savings-and-loan scam of the 1980s, that are usually buried back in the business section of newspapers. But, just as with the S&L collapse, this debacle is growing too big to contain, and all of us need to be paying attention. The built-in traps of the subprime mortgage market have already taken the homes of more than a million people in just the past year, and the dangers are quickly rising for millions more."

White House Declares Office Off-Limits

Dan Eggen reports for The Washington Post: "The Bush administration argued in court papers this week that the White House Office of Administration is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act as part of its effort to fend off a civil lawsuit seeking the release of internal documents about a large number of e-mails missing from White House servers. The claim, made in a motion filed Tuesday by the Justice Department, is at odds with a depiction of the office on the White House's own Web site."

Club against phone mast plan

The chairman of Bridgnorth Town Football Club today claimed T Mobile’s plans to build a phone mast on its ground are detrimental to what the club is trying to achieve.

Eric Eagles said he was worried a 17m mast could turn people away from the club and sour relations with the community - even though it has nothing to do with them.

His comments come after T Mobile’s application to build a new floodlight with a telecommunications antennae at the Crown Meadow ground was finally registered with the district council.

Bridgnorth Town FC, which leases the ground at Innage Lane from the town council, has already voiced its opposition to the scheme.

The power to end war

Boston Globe
by Charles A. Stevenson

08/22/07

The debate over whether and how to end the war in Iraq has been muddied by legal disputes over which branch of the federal government has the power to do what. Supporters of a strong presidency can point to court decisions upholding a broad reading of the commander in chief’s powers. Constitutional purists who believe in Congress’ supreme power to authorize war can quote the Framers and most early presidents in their own behalf. What has been largely ignored in this debate is what Congress has actually done in previous conflicts. In fact, there are many precedents for Congress to act to restrict presidential authority or capabilities to fight the war. The question is whether Congress can muster majorities to enact the necessary laws...

The utter uselessness of the Petraeus report

The American Prospect
by Paul Waldman

08/22/07

Just a few weeks from now, the most eagerly anticipated premier of the year will finally be here, complete with fierce disagreement among the critics and relentless hype by the producers, cameras furiously clicking when the starring players emerge in public. That premier is the report coming in mid-September from U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker and, more importantly, Gen. David Petraeus, commander of American forces there. If you’re expecting a surprise ending, you shouldn’t hold your breath. But it isn’t just the report itself that is utterly predictable. Bush may have buried the GOP

Human Events
by Doug Patton

08/22/07

During the first six years after the so-called Republican Revolution, the GOP Congress held spending to a mere avalanche. They reformed welfare and balanced the federal budget. And even though it was Bill Clinton who got the credit, it was Congress which held the purse strings. Then came George W. Bush. As president, the self-proclaimed compassionate conservative led his party down a path of spending and expansion of government that would have made FDR envious. He and his GOP Congress deserve credit for cutting taxes at a crucial time, and for saving the country from what could have been a severe downturn in the economy, post-9/11. But the alienation of the GOP base that followed six years of George Bush working with a Republican Congress has been depressing to watch...

The vanishing right to travel

Online Journal
by Ezekiel Jones

08/20/07

Middle-aged Americans remember how our leaders, parents and teachers distinguished our country from the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies by pointing to the pictures and films of desperate East Germans and Hungarians who were forced to risk their lives just to move to a new country. In those days, there were people like William O. Douglas who had both the inclination and the power to defend Americans’ right to travel, but today, with so many fundamental liberties under assault at once, the more subtle attack on freedom of movement has received little attention. It would be tragic if some Americans finally come to the conclusion there is no option but to leave their repressive homeland only to find that they have already lost the right to do so without risking a dangerous, illegal run across a border...

New misgivings on wiretap law

The administration’s warrantless wiretapping program looks set to be the subject of renewed and bitter wrangling between Congress and the White House when lawmakers return to Washington in September. Robert O'Harrow Jr., The Washington Post, reports: "Under pressure from the White House and Congress to deliver a long-delayed plan last year, officials at the Department of Homeland Security's counter-narcotics office took a shortcut that has become common at federal agencies: They hired help through a no-bid contract. US-Iran Policy Dynamics

By Noam Chomsky

IN CRUDE and brutal societies, the Party Line is publicly proclaimed, and it must be obeyed, or else. What you believe is your own business, of lesser concern. In societies where the state has lost the capacity to control by force, the Party Line is not proclaimed. Rather, it is presupposed, and then vigorous debate is encouraged within the limits imposed by unstated doctrinal orthodoxy.
