America's biggest threat comes from within

Paul Craig Roberts is a Republican who served as undersecretary of the treasury under Ronald Reagan and associate editor of the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, so he's no kook or Commie. He warns, "Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the United States could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran."

Sheep can never be shepherds: Tyranny Of The Few

By Mirza Yawar Baig

The real battle is for mindshare. And it is on the television screen. That is where governments of the developed world are made or unmade. Popularity is the god that the West worships. Because popularity translates into money and power. That is what we have to do: become popular. Setting off fireworks is not the way to do this. No matter what the provocation.

Convicting Padilla: Bad News for All Americans

With habeas corpus a thing of the past, with arrest and detention without charge permitted, with torture and spying without court oversight all the rage, with prosecutors free to tape conversations between lawyers and their clients, and with the judicial branch now infested by rightwing judges who would have been at home in courtrooms of the Soviet Union or Hitler's Germany, for all they seem to care about common law tradition, the only real thing holding the line against absolute tyranny in the U.S. has been the jury.

Prelude to an Attack on Iran

Reports that the Bush Administration will put Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the terrorism list can be read in one of two ways: it's either more bluster or, ominously, a wind-up for a strike on Iran. How Rove Directed Federal Assets for GOP Gains

John Solomon, Alec MacGillis and Sarah Cohen of the Washington Post report that: "Thirteen months before President Bush was reelected, chief strategist Karl Rove summoned political appointees from around the government to the Old Executive Office Building. The subject of the October 1, 2003, meeting was 'asset deployment,' and the message was clear: The staging of official announcements, high-visibility trips and declarations of federal grants had to be carefully coordinated with the White House political affairs office to ensure the maximum promotion of Bush's reelection agenda and the Republicans in Congress who supported him, according to documents and some of those involved in the effort."

Seven US Soldiers Speak Out: The Iraq War As We See It

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/08/19/3270

--------

Seven Returning Troops: "The War As We Saw It"

In The New York Times, seven soldiers write: "Viewed from Iraq at the tail end of a 15-month deployment, the political debate in Washington is indeed surreal. Counterinsurgency is, by definition, a competition between insurgents and counterinsurgents for the control and support of a population. To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched. As responsible infantrymen and noncommissioned officers with the 82nd Airborne Division soon heading back home, we are skeptical of recent press coverage portraying the conflict as increasingly manageable and feel it has neglected the mounting civil, political and social unrest we see every day."

Xghajra parents appeal against mobile phone mast

Parents from Xghajra and the local council are up in arms after neighbours installed a mobile phone antenna on their roof in Triq Awrat.

When the MEPA application permit was displayed on their building, some residents wrote to MEPA stating their objections. However, they have now discovered that in spite of their objection, the antenna was installed because there are new legal notices 115 and 187, which state that no MEPA approval is needed for such installations!!

When the mobile company was contacted, it said that such antennae are not harmful; however the parents have other reports showing that radiation issued within 500m of installations are harmful especially for children, even though the radiation is below the stipulated limit.

Children are more prone to such hazards as they absorb the radiation far more than adults. The radiation kills parts of the cells of the body that fight cancer.
