Bush War Adviser Says Draft Worth a Look

The Associated Press reported Friday evening that President Bush's recently installed war adviser suggested the US should consider a return to a military draft to offset extraordinary demands on the volunteer force due to frequent tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Very Scary Things

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote in Friday's edition that the credit crisis affecting the nation's financial markets over the past few days "is something that truly scares monetary economists: liquidity has dried up. That is, markets in stuff that is normally traded all the time - in particular, financial instruments backed by home mortgages - have shut down because there are no buyers. This could turn out to be nothing more than a brief scare. At worst, however, it could cause a chain reaction of debt defaults."

How the Democrats Blew It in Only 8 Months

By Alexander Cockburn

The voters put the Democrats in to end the war, and it's escalating. The Democrats voted the money for the surge and the money for the next $459.6 billion military budget. Their latest achievement was to provide enough votes in support of Bush to legalize warrantless wiretapping for "foreign suspects whose communications pass through the United States." Enough Democrats joined Republicans to make this a 227-183 victory for Bush.

The NAFTA superhighway

The Nation
by Christopher Hayes

08/09/07

When completed, the highway will run from Mexico City to Toronto, slicing through the heartland like a dagger sunk into a heifer at the loins and pulled clean to the throat. It will be four football fields wide, an expansive gully of concrete, noise and exhaust, swelled with cars, trucks, trains and pipelines carrying water, wires and God knows what else. Through towns large and small it will run, plowing under family farms, subdevelopments, acres of wilderness. … And this NAFTA Superhighway, as it is called, is just the beginning, the first stage of a long, silent coup aimed at supplanting the sovereign United States with a multinational North American Union...

How we can take the Constitution back from the brink

AlterNet
by Tara Lohan

08/09/07

At no time in our country’s history has the abuse of power by the executive branch been more flagrant and more dangerous to democracy. In just the past month, the Bush administration has ordered employees to ignore congressional subpoenas, asserted broad new parameters for executive privilege and issued an executive order that could permit seizing assets of Americans deemed at its discretion to be hurting the war effort in Iraq. Meanwhile, the administration continues to spy on its own citizens, including widespread data mining of telephone records and emails. Since taking office, Bush has pushed his authority past the bounds of the Constitution, and now a new group is ready to push back. The American Freedom Campaign has stepped up to the plate and is working to build bipartisan grassroots support ‘to reverse the abuse of executive power and restore our system of checks and balances’...

Will the real Colin Powell please stand up?

Salon
by Sidney Blumenthal

08/09/07

Wilkerson and Bodine have spoken out before. But Armitage’s debut in particular has the White House fuming and fretting that it somehow signals Powell’s emergence as a full-throated critic in the middle of the September P.R. offensive. National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, according to sources close to him, has voiced anger and concern about whether Powell will step forward and what he might say, and other presidential aides are wondering how to cope with that nightmarish possibility. Two months ago, Powell declared the surge a near-certain failure. … Hadley and others are taking Powell’s early skepticism toward the surge and willingness to express it as a potential sign that he will swoop down on them just after Petraeus asks for more forbearance for the president’s policy. Powell is the White House’s ticking-time-bomb scenario. He was Petraeus before Petraeus, the good soldier before the good soldier, window-dressing before window-dressing...

American foreign policy at point zero

AntiWar.Com
by Gabriel Kolko

08/10/07

Political conflicts are not solved by military interventions, and that they are often incapable of being resolved by political or peaceful means does not alter the fact that force is dysfunctional. This is truer today than ever with the spread of weapons technology. The U.S. is not exempt from the facts that have guided international affairs for centuries. The U.S. has already lost the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for the very same reasons it lost all of its earlier conflicts. It has the manpower and firepower advantage, as always, but these are ultimately irrelevant in the medium- and long-run. They were irrelevant in many contexts in which the U.S. was not involved, and they explain the outcome of many armed struggles over the past century regardless of who was in them, for they are usually decided by the socio-economic and political strength of the various sides — China after 1947 and Vietnam after 1972 are two examples but scarcely the only ones...

Bank freezes funds, markets plummet on sub-prime fears

USA Today

08/10/07

For investors, the only thing worse than bad news is uncertainty, and thanks to a French bank’s decision to freeze $2.2 billion in funds Thursday, uncertainty rocked the markets and sent the Dow Jones industrials tumbling 387 points to 13,271. BNP Paribas said in a statement that it barred the doors on three funds that were invested in subprime mortgages because the bank didn’t feel it could calculate a fair value for those assets. Two financial services firms in Germany have also halted redemptions from funds connected to the U.S. subprime market. Those moves come on the heels of the collapse of two Bear Stearns hedge funds that were heavily invested in subprime mortgages...

If Climate Change and Global Ecology Are Really So Bad, Where Is the Urgency?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Earth Meanders -- http://earthmeanders.blogspot.com/ A series of personal essays by Dr. Glen Barry

August 10, 2007

Hate to say it, but I told you so. Global ecological collapse is upon us and the human family is entering a Hobbesian struggle for survival of the Earth and all her species including humans. Even mainstream leaders tell us we have a decade to act before utter ecological ruin and despair is assured. If things are really so bad, where is the urgency? Will you fight for being?

Many mega-consumers in the over-developed world, until now responsible for most environmental destruction, live in a world of entertainment, abundance and great comfort. We sit stupefied in front of our home entertainment systems, addicted to vicariously watching the lives of glamorous stars, as the Earth dies. Movies and TV are the modern day bread and circuses meant to control and keep blind consumers blindly consuming.

A lifetime of global change and ecology research leads me to conclude humans are on the brink of global ecological collapse and only dramatic, even revolutionary, global policy responses can save us now. The Earth system has been cut deeply, hurt in so many ways, that barring major social and personal transformation, it is not inconceivable that complex life is finished. There has been enough awareness building. It is time to act bravely and with resolve.

These are dangerous times. And those concerned with the fate of the planet and her species are faced with a dilemma. They can follow a failing, star-studded, corporate driven reformist agenda which seeks to greenwash business as usual environmental policy responses. Or you can concern yourself with what is truly required to maintain the biosphere, ecological patterns and processes, relatively civilized human society; and yourself, family and friends.

Human populations have increased six fold in just over 125 years, who has a plan to reduce global population? Billions live on a dollar or two a day while a handful of billionaires enjoy more wealth than entire nations. The whole world increasingly embraces as the meaning of life ostentatiously living like celebrities. Meanwhile climate, forests, oceans and water are failing worldwide. The sky is falling.

Humanity is facing global ecological Armageddon within a decade or generation at most. Responses to date have been half-hearted, and do little or nothing to strike at over-population and over- consumption as the underlying causes of a failing biosphere.

There is little hope when Greenpeace promotes ancient forest logging, when Al Gore states climate change can be addressed without economic sacrifice, when Leonardo DiCaprio assures us at the 11th Hour he only uses private jets when absolutely necessary. These are our leaders? Their vision lacks concrete actions adequate to achieve equitable and just ecological sustainability.

Academically, at what point if ever will armed struggle on behalf of Gaia be justified? I ask not to encourage violence, but to ascertain what we are willing to sacrifice to save the Earth and her humanity. Given the failure of large environmental groups and well-known environmental activists to present a coherent and adequate vision to save the Earth, what are we left with? Changing light bulbs? Renewable energy? Simultaneous global rock concerts? Will these get us there?

Is the very ecological fabric of being worthy of fighting for at all costs? I do not know. But if indeed there is only a decade to save the planet, our being, and very existence; are we not justified in imagining more robust responses? I speak not of token arson or mild larceny, but of a global eco-insurgency adequate to topple the whole disgusting planet eating industrial growth machine and replace it globally with decentralized ecologically sustainable agrarian democracy. The vision is of people living peacefully with the land, air, water, oceans and all life; and within their ecological and bioregional limits.

A hypothetical Earth revolution must know when and how to strike. As global ecological mayhem intensifies, it will become increasingly evident when to begin wholeheartedly targeting SUVs, coal power plants, ancient forest loggers and their apologists. The goal must be prompting swift industrial collapse and lead to a continued insurgency adequate to stop its regeneration, even as people's needs are met by returning to the land in relocalized communities practicing true egalitarian democracy and sustainable permaculture. It is crucial that the first strike not result in the entire Earth insurgency being arrested, suppressed and dismantled.

War in defense of the Earth and our habitat is not mere tokenism; it is a fight for all life and continued being. Given the failure of the environmental movement and existing political and economic structures to enunciate and implement policies adequate to stop ecosystem destruction and meet all basic human needs, it is time to ask yourself whether you will simply lie down and die without fighting for mother Earth and your children's children? My best advice is to educate yourself, band together in landed communities, organize and protest; and begin to stealthily prepare yourself for an Earth Revolution should we fail. Gaia will say when.

The Bombing of Nagasaki August 9, 1945: The Untold Story

By Gary G. Kohls

62 years ago, on August 9th, 1945, the second of the only two atomic bombs (a plutonium bomb) ever used as instruments of aggressive war (against essentially defenseless civilian populations) was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, by an all-Christian bomb crew. The well-trained American soldiers were only "doing their job," and they did it efficiently.

Fighting the Democrats' Complicity with Bush

The Democrats in Congress have taken no effective steps to stop, impede, or thwart the Bush Jr. administration's wars of aggression against Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, or anywhere else, including their long-standing threatened war against Iran. To the contrary, the new Democrat-controlled Congress decisively facilitated these serial Nuremberg crimes against peace on May 24, 2007 by enacting a $95 billion supplemental appropriation to fund war operations through September 30, 2007.
