Cindy Sheehan: "I Will Beat Speaker Pelosi"

"I Announce My Candidacy Against Nancy Pelosi in California's 8th"

By Cindy Sheehan

I am committed to challenging a two-party system that has kept us in a state of constant warfare for the last 60 years and has become more and more beholden to special interests and has forgotten the faces of the people whom it represents. I am committed to using our strength as a country to wage peace and to elevate the status of every citizen in our country by converting the enduring war economy to a prosperous one with lasting peace.

Anti-war Sheehan vows stand against House speaker

"If Nancy Pelosi doesn't do her constitutionally mandated job by midnight tonight, tomorrow I will announce that I'm going to run against her," Sheehan said after a cross-country trip with supporters.

Leahy, Specter Lay Into Gonzales

Paul Kiel of TPM Muckraker reports: "Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Ranking Member Arlen Specter (R-PA) failed to disguise their contempt for Alberto Gonzales in their opening statements. Leahy, after running down the laundry list of Gonzales' failures and instances of questionable testimony, said that the administration's stance on their surveillance programs was 'just trust us.' Well, 'I don't trust you,' said Leahy."

GOP, Bush continue to undercut will of the people on Iraq

Tennessean
by Robert D. Tuke

07/23/07

The White House and too many Republicans in the Senate — including Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker — are thwarting the will of the American people, who overwhelmingly want our leaders to take care of our troops, bring them home safely and find a sensible strategy to extricate us from the civil war in Iraq. And they are doing it in the most insidious of ways: by blocking votes on legislation and by rejecting independent review of the President’s strategy...

Why the US military loves Ron Paul

The Nation
by Tom Engelhardt

07/23/07

While US commanders in Iraq are deep into planning post-surge surges well into next spring, a couple of straws in the military wind indicate that support for them, not just in civilian America but in military America, may be on the wane. Recently, Military.com, a large insider website directed at the military and veteran communities, polled its readers on when US troops should withdraw from Iraq and the results proved a surprise: ‘Nearly 60 percent of readers who participated … said the United States should withdraw its troops from Iraq now or by the end of 2008. More than 40 percent of the respondents agreed the pullout should begin immediately because ‘we’re wasting lives and resources there”...

Dems face blunt questions on Iraq, draft

Port Clinton News Herald

07/24/07

Young, Internet-savvy voters challenged Democratic presidential hopefuls on Iraq, the military draft and the candidates’ own place in a broken political system, playing starring roles in a provocative, video-driven debate Monday night. ‘Wassup?’ came the first question, from a voter named Zach, after another, named Chris, opened the CNN-YouTube debate with a barb aimed at the entire eight-candidate field: ‘Can you as politicians … actually answer questions rather than beat around the bush?’

The Democrats' Iraqi Dilemma

Ira Chernus of TomDispatch.com writes: "Pity the poor Democratic candidates for president, caught between Iraq and a hard place. Every day, more and more voters decide that we must end the war and set a date to start withdrawing our troops from Iraq. Most who will vote in the Democratic primaries concluded long ago that we must leave Iraq, and they are unlikely to let anyone who disagrees with them have the party's nomination in 2008."

Big Government Grover and the Fund Manager Subsidy

"While people with middle class jobs like teachers and firefighters typically pay a 25 percent tax rate, and higher-paid professionals like doctors and lawyers pay a 35 percent rate, fund managers are taxed at just a 15 percent rate on their earnings," writes Truthout's Dean Baker.

Career Colonel an Unlikely Adversary of Detainee Hearings

"Stephen E. Abraham's assignment to the Pentagon unit that runs the hearings at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba seemed a perfect fit. A lawyer in civilian life, he had been decorated for counterespionage and counterterrorism work during 22 years as a reserve Army intelligence officer in which he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel," writes William Glaberson of The New York Times. "In June, Colonel Abraham became the first military insider to criticize publicly the Guantanamo hearings, which determine whether detainees should be held indefinitely as enemy combatants."

Vast Enron-Like Fraud Probe Abandoned by Justice Dept.

"Two years into a fraud investigation, veteran federal prosecutor David Maguire told colleagues he'd uncovered one of the biggest cases of his career," writes Marisa Taylor of McClatchy Newspapers. "Maguire described crimes 'far worse' than those of Arthur Andersen, the accounting giant that collapsed in the wake of the Enron scandal. Among those in his sights: executives from a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, the investment empire overseen by billionaire Warren Buffett."

The Assault on Due Process and Civil Liberties

Ian Welsh writes for FireDogLake: "Civil liberties and due process have been under relentless assault for nearly 40 years now in the US. The War on Terror, for all that it has had horrible human rights and civil liberties abuses enacted in its name, would not have been possible without the preceding War on Drugs. What many seem to not realize is that the rights lost by one person are lost by everyone. When some 'terrorist' or 'trafficker' loses his or her rights, so do you."

Will Bush invade Pakistan?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

Congress is finally going to defund a repressive and increasingly unpopular U.S.-backed government that is currently engaged in a losing conflict with Islamic radicals and is endangered by rising anti-Americanism in the country. The current regime is not among the most liberal in the world and is weak, at best, enjoying more support in Washington than anywhere else. In spite of billions in American aid, the country appears to be on the verge of breaking up, with independent tribal chieftains and various clans, not the ‘central government’ run by Washington’s sock-puppets, holding the real power. No, this isn’t about Iraq — it’s about Pakistan, where al-Qaeda has carved out an enclave, reportedly in the wilds of Waziristan, and where the ‘experts’ are saying Osama bin Laden has probably fled...

Bush’s torture ban is full of loopholes

Salon
by David Cole

07/23/07

Once upon a time, a U.S. official’s condemnation of torture was a statement of moral principle. Today, it is an opportunity for obfuscation. We have learned that when President Bush says, ‘We don’t torture,’ it’s important to read the fine print. So it was once again on July 20, when Bush issued a long-awaited executive order purporting to regulate interrogation tactics used by the CIA in the ‘war on terror.’ According to a White House press release, the order provides ‘clear rules’ to implement the Geneva Conventions governing treatment of detainees in wartime — rules the administration insisted did not even apply to the ‘war on terror’ until the Supreme Court ruled otherwise last summer. But while the new rules reflect a significant retreat by the administration from its initial torture policies, they are anything but ‘clear,’ come far too late in the day, and in any event are unenforceable...

Bush's Latest Executive Order and Jurisdiction

by Devvy Kidd

No where in the U.S. Constitution does it authorize a president or Congress the authority to steal from the people's treasury to fund humanitarian efforts or nation building. Humanitarian efforts should and are funded through private organizations. The fact that there's never enough money is the fault of these dictators, potentates and crooks running these countries. New world order advocates like William Kristol, who cares nothing for the U.S. Constitution, is a favorite on FAUX (FOX) News......

Call Congress Today for Impeachment

http://tinyurl.com/2dzwst

--------

WE ARE THREE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AWAY FROM IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS

We all know the bad news, which is that the Cheney administration is determined to commit even more gross and outrageous abuses of power until finally Congress stands up and confronts them. But the good news is that the mounting public pressure is having an effect and John Conyers confided that if three more members of Congress sign on to the call for impeachment he will initiate proceedings. That's all they are waiting on . . . for enough of us to speak out to make it happen.

IMPEACHMENT ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

Your voice can make a real difference right now, by letting your own representatives in Congress know that you expect them to do their constitutional duty and put an end to the crimes of the White House. And there are so many impeachable crimes, they commit new ones day by day. To try to hide their wrongdoing they are obstructing justice in every possible way, ordering their cronies to refuse to testify, defying Congressional subpoenas, which would be impeachable offenses standing alone.

The action page above is a voting page, with already over 90,000 submissions. Would it surprise you to know that 99.19 percent of the vote so far have been Yes to impeach? Unless Congress acts now, we shudder to think what unimaginable further damage the White House dictatorship will inflict on our democracy in the next 18 months. They are desperately clutching power and it is not too far-fetch to ask if they will stage a terrorist attack (or do NOTHING to stop one) for the purpose of imposing martial law and gutting our Constitution altogether.

We have seen an endless stream of executive orders in the last couple months that purport to grant the president unlimited powers in just such an event. These orders are so broad and ambiguous that any disruption anywhere in the world might be used as a pretext for the Constitutionally unthinkable. They literally presume to write sweeping legislation in the form of administrative directives, a further expression of their inherent contempt for the role of Congress.

The courts will not save us. This was demonstrated again this week when a loyal Bushie threw out the civil law suit of Valerie Plame without even a hearing on the merits. There is only one thing that can save us. Your voice. If and only if YOU will click a mouse one time to send your vote to Congress on the question of impeachment, then and only them can we get the additional three members of Congress to take action, and once the process begins there will be no stopping it.

Some have asked why take action against Cheney first. It is not just that he is the least popular, he is also the most guilty. Already a majority of the American people support his impeachment, by even the most conservative pollsters. And of course once Cheney impeachment reaches critical mass, his puppet Bush will be pulled in by the same trail of evidence. But if you would rather call for both of them to be impeached at once, there is an action page for that too.

IMPEACH BOTH: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_both.php

Take action now. Raise your voice. Join the hundreds of thousands who are starting to speak out in this time of great Constitutional peril, perhaps the most sinister threat our democracy has ever faced.

TELL DENNIS KUCINICH HOW PROUD YOU ARE OF HIM

And please also consider making a donation to Dennis Kucinich, without whose leadership on the issues none of this might have been able to happen. He is the one who put forward H.Res. 333 when nobody else had the Constitutional integrity to even raise their hand.

KUCINICH DONATIONS: http://www.usalone.com/donations_kucinich.php

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.
