White House Opposes Move to Declassify Report on Iraq's WMDs

The White House is resisting a move by both Republicans and Democrats to fully declassify a Senate report on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. The White House believes the declassification would trigger another round of negative news media coverage and Democratic-led Congressional hearings, said a Senate Republican, who asked to remain anonymous because of ongoing private discussions.

Ruler of a Media Empire Reaches Out for More

The American newspaper industry has never seen a publisher quite like Rupert Murdoch. Mr. Murdoch has long been a pivotal figure in England and Australia, and in the dozen years since he has moved his base of operations to this country, he has insinuated himself into the political and financial fabric of the United States. His businesses have thrived in a highly regulated environment in part because of his remarkable ability to mold the rules to fit his needs.

Pushing the Envelope on Presidential Power

Cheney and his allies, according to more than two dozen current and former officials, pioneered a novel distinction between forbidden "torture" and permitted use of "cruel, inhuman or degrading" methods of questioning. They did not originate every idea to rewrite or reinterpret the law, but fresh accounts from participants show that they translated muscular theories, from legal counsel to the attorney general John Yoo and others, into the operational language of government.

The wheels are coming off the machine

Free Market News Network
by Dave Lindorff

The wheels are coming off the Democratic machine, with angry voters starting to lose patience with the Party’s chronic inability to act decisively on any of the key issues of public concern. In a Reuters dispatch on June 18, Democratic leaders in Congress concede that voters are angry with them for not doing enough to end the Iraq War. They might have added that voters are also angry at them for not impeaching the president or even for moving on Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s bill to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney (H Res. 333). ‘I understand their disappointment. We raised the bar too high,’ bleats Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid (D-NV). No Harry. You didn’t raise the bar too high. You ducked under the bar, when it came time to act to defund the war. Last month, instead of cutting off funding for Bush’s war in Iraq, Congress passed a measure providing him with over $100 billion to fund it, attaching no strings to the measure — not even any deadlines for starting to withdraw troops. This after running a 2006 campaign on ending the war. No wonder Democrats and the independents and, yes, even Republicans who voted Democrats into control of Congress last November are furious...

Spend and spin

Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

Politics in America today is a pyramid built from promises. Individuals get elected to powerful positions by making promises. Every kind of benefit the politician has to offer goes on sale during an election. All kinds of promises are made targeting certain groups of people in an attempt to buy their favor at the ballot box. The bigger the promises, the more votes are generated and success depends on getting the votes. Everyone that wishes to join the ranks of the rich and powerful is promising either to do something or not to do something. Who can you believe? (written 02/04; posted 06/24/07)

Vice President Cheney surfing the waves of government secrecy once again

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/06/24/2061/

--------

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT A LAW DEFYING, POWER GRABBING VICE PRESIDENT OUT OF CONTROL?

The descriptions are not ours. In the face of new revelations of the wholesale dismissal of the Constitution by the Vice President Cheney, "Power Grab" was the headline on the ABC News site. "Defiant" was the headline of the Washington Post. By now you could not have escaped hearing all the stories of the assertion by the vice president's office that he is a branch of government unto himself, and not beholden to any other. And if you have not read the stories, they are all linked in the "Arguments" section of this action page, where you can also cast your vote on whether Cheney should be impeached immediately.

NATIONAL CHENEY IMPEACHMENT POLL: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

And if the situation were not extreme enough, it was also reported this week that Cheney is aggressively campaigning for Bush to pardon Scooter Libby, which is an act of obstruction of justice on its face, according to John Dean, who should know a little something about impeachment. Whether or not Bush has the Constitutional power to grant pardons without cause, it is still an abuse power for him to do so, and a Constitutional high CRIME for Cheney to campaign for him to do so.

So now . . . NOW will you vote in the National Cheney Impeachment Poll, just as more than 72,000 of your fellow democracy-loving citizens already have? Would you be surprised to learn that 99.22 percent of those votes were Yes to impeach? Speaking on the Keith Olberman show tonight, Dana Milbank described the Vice President as a man "showing no restraint", and still . . . STILL Milbank could not bring himself to say the word "impeachment". Does he have a speech impediment? Do WE the people have a speech impediment?

DO YOU THINK CHENEY SHOULD BE IMPEACHED OR NOT?

Now is the time to speak out. Maybe you think that the Vice President is doing a great job and that Scooter Libby deserves a medal of freedom for outing Valerie Plame, thereby trashing our best source of REAL intelligence on WMDs in the Middle East. If so, then vote No, please vote No and take responsibility, and tell us you like having our Constitution ripped into little shreds.

By if you are as stunned as everyone else in the country about the increasingly brutal way that Cheney is abusing the power he has already grabbed, from the time he appointed HIMSELF as Bush's running mate, then please vote Yes to impeach. If you are as outraged as everyone else about a rogue executive operating as an imperial outlaw unto himself, please vote Yes to impeach.

NATIONAL CHENEY IMPEACHMENT POLL: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

It's OK in the personal message you send to Congress from the action page above to include a laundry list of all the other executive branch rogues who you think should be impeached at the same time, including Bush himself. But the Cheney situation is already long past the tipping point. His impeachment will lead DIRECTLY to the exposure of all the others and their removal as well.

Congress will NOT defy the voices of millions of us speaking out. That's what it will take. We have over 72,000 votes already, and we have only just begun to scratch the surface of the anger about what Cheney and his gang have done to our great country, sucking us into a ruinous, wrong-headed war on phony evidence they cooked themselves, criminal illegal wiretaps, torture as official U.S. policy, while they sell out our economy to foreign oil interests and crony war profiteers.

Our democracy can be saved, but ONLY if you speak out now.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

In March, when the US State Department announced its new global survey of human rights, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared that the report demonstrated America's commitment to civil liberties, the rule of law, and a free press. "And we are recommitting ourselves to call every government to account that still treats the basic rights of its citizens as options rather than, in President Bush's words, the non-negotiable demands of human dignity."

The pattern was set way back on September 8, 2002, when in simultaneous appearances three cabinet members and the vice president warned darkly of Saddam's aluminum tubes. 'We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud,' said Condi Rice, in a scripted line. The hard sell of the war in Iraq had officially begun. America wasn't paying close enough attention then. PLEASE CONSIDER SIGNING THE PETITION BELOW - THANK YOU!

*Banning Incandescent Light Bulbs*

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to maintain the availability of existing incandescent lightbulbs until there are suitable non-fluorescent energy saving bulbs which can be tolerated by everyone including people with light sensitivity.

Health conditions which can result in severe and painful reactions to fluorescent low-energy bulbs and LEDs include lupus, ME, forms of eczema and dermatitis, XP, migraine, electrosensitivity and many more. These people will suffer increased ill health and total social exclusion if the ban on incandescent bulbs is implemented. Their home life, family life and social life will be severely disrupted and their access to employment, places of worship, cultural and educational activities will be removed.

Lightbulbs are essential items of everyday use. We need to encourage technologies that promote both environmental sustainability and human health and wellbeing. This is a serious and complex issue of public health, disability rights and human rights.

THE PETITION CAN BE VIEWED/SIGNED AT:

New York Times, Letter to the Editor;

The two articles that appeared in the January 10th, 2008 issue of the NYT on energy efficient lights [Any other Bright Ideas by Julie Schefo and Remaking the Condo with Light and Air by Sidney LeBlance] were both interesting but they failed to mention one very important point. Some of these bulbs emit radio frequency radiation. This radiation flows through the air and along electrical wires contributing to dirty electricity. Some packages even have a warning about the radio frequency saying this light may interfere with radio reception. Indeed this is something that most people can test with a portable radio on AM. As you bring the radio close to an energy efficient bulb that produces radio frequencies the radio will begin to buzz. This is known as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and is a concern for anyone using wireless technology such as mobile phones or wireless computers.

But the real problem is that these frequencies are making people sick. Three independent groups in the UK, including the British Association of Dermatologists, the Migraine Action Association, and Epilepsy Action, have reported illness among their members who have tried energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFL). The most common symptoms are headaches-including migraines, fatigue, confusion, dizziness, ringing in the ears, eyestrain, nausea and skin irritations.

Not all energy efficient bulbs are the same. Some do not contribute to dirty electricity and do not produce radio frequencies and this includes a few compact fluorescent lights, some LEDs (light emitting dioxides) and some halogen bulbs. Unfortunately most of the bulbs on the market will make people sick. Reducing green house gases is important but doing it with flawed technology that will make the user ill is not the right course of action. If governments are going to ban the energy-inefficient but electromagnetically clean incandescent bulb, then they should also ban bulbs that produce radio frequency pollution.

I would encourage anyone who has recently purchased energy efficient bulbs and has since developed any of the symptoms mentioned above to test the bulb for radiation with a portable radio and if the radio buzzes to return the bulb to the retail store for a full refund. Even if our government hasn't done its homework, individual consumers can still make a difference.
