Libby Testimony Points Directly to Bush, Cheney

According to trial transcripts obtained by Truthout, former White House staffer I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby testified before a grand jury in 2004 that Vice President Dick Cheney instructed him to divulge portions of a then-classified report to New York Times reporter Judith Miller. Libby testified that Cheney said authorization to leak a section of the report had come directly from President George W. Bush, the court transcripts state.

Questioning Vaccines is not "Fueled by Ignorance"

by Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, DO

But vaccine injuries are real despite claims that occurrences are rare. Fears of developing autism as a result of vaccination have been dismissed by mainstream medicine which prefers to attribute the increase incidence of autism, currently at 1 in 166 children, to a “better diagnosis.” Thimerosal (mercury) in vaccines has received much attention in the association with autism. Undoubtedly, many children have.....

From Afghanistan to Iraq: Connecting the Dots With Oil

Richard W. Behan writes: "The long-held suspicions about George Bush's wars are well-placed. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were not prompted by the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. They were not waged to spread democracy in the Middle East or enhance security at home. They were conceived and planned in secret long before September 11, 2001, and they were undertaken to control petroleum resources."

Democrats Try Again to Stop Troop Escalation

As Senate Democrats seek votes on capping troop numbers and funding for Iraq, they may use the pending bill on the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission as a vehicle, setting up a replay of the debate over funding for troops that this week derailed their leadership-backed non-binding resolution on Bush's "surge" proposal.

Bombs over Baghdad: The Pentagon's Secret Air War in Iraq

A secret air war is being waged in Iraq -- often in and around that country's population centers -- about which we can find out little. The U.S. military keeps information on the munitions expended in its air efforts under tight wraps, refusing to offer details on the scale of use and so minimizing the importance of air power in Iraq. But expert opinion holds that the forms of aerial assault being employed in that country, though hardly covered in our media, may account for most of the U.S. and coalition-attributed Iraqi civilian deaths there since the 2003 invasion. While some aspects of the air war remain a total mystery, Air Force officials do acknowledge that U.S. military and coalition aircraft dropped at least 111,000 pounds of bombs on targets in Iraq in 2006.

You mast the point

You report that the mobile phone mast in Akers Way has been moved 40 metres away from its original position (SA, February 1).

I don't think the residents of Manor Crescent should get the champagne out just yet, though. If your article is correct, it will still be only 85 metres from people in Manor Crescent.

The 10-year Naila study by doctors in Germany found a threefold increase in the risk of malignant tumours in people living within 400 metres of a mast. Another (Israeli) study discovered a fourfold increase in cancer within 350 metres, and a tenfold increase specifically among women, compared to people living away from the mast.

We have good reason to fear the spread of these masts, particularly with regard to our children who are particularly vulnerable to radiation. Their brains are still developing and undoubtedly there will be trouble ahead unless mast proliferation is better controlled.

The dangers are not confined only to cancer. Other problems have been found, including headaches, dizziness, depression, fatigue and poor concentration - just what our children need as they try to cope with the demands of our education system.

If I lived in Manor Crescent, I would demand that the mast be moved at least a further 600 or 700 metres away. Then the champagne corks could really pop.

Can our species survive?

No Force, No Fraud
by Bob Smith

02/03/07

There are times when I think our species is hopeless. In my fellow humans, I see high energy, bountiful creativity, and splendid innovation. I see that in our personal dealings, almost all of us treat each other with respect and fairness. We are superbly capable and talented beings, yet we have one flaw that is very likely to destroy our species if we don’t recognize it and dispense with it. We, as individual beings, are so willing to live in subjugation to others. We eagerly subject ourselves to territorial governments that abuse us no end. We also humbly accede to a variety of mystical claimants seeking our obedience and worship...

Bush's unbelievable lack of understanding of the problem and any realistic solution

Legalization now!

Liberty For All

As I listened to the President’s speech on the War on Drugs, I was astonished at his unbelievable lack of understanding of the problem and any realistic solution. It would seem with his own history of drug use, he openly admits to a past drinking problem, and with that of his daughters and niece, Mr. Bush might actually understand. He, in one sentence proposes spending 19 Billion dollars on the failed War on Drugs, including over 9 Billion for interdiction, then a scant minute later states: ‘As long as there is a demand for drugs in this country, some crook is gonna figure out how to get ‘em here’... The military budget that President Bush released is much bigger than the official summaries let on

It’s time to sharpen the scissors

Slate
by Fred Kaplan

02/05/07

The military budget that President Bush released today is much bigger than the official summaries let on. It’s not $481.4 billion, as the Defense Department is claiming. No, a squint through the fine print of the White House and Pentagon budget documents reveals that the true request for new military-spending authority comes to $739 billion. Measured in real terms (that is, adjusted for inflation), that’s about one-third higher than the previous record for U.S. military spending, set in 1952, when more than 30,000 American soldiers were dying in the Korean War and the Pentagon was embarking on its massive Cold War rearmament drive...

Wearing hats shaped like smokestacks and carrying signs that said, "Coal Investments Cook the Climate," a group known as Billionaires for Coal raised awareness last week about the plans by TXU, a Dallas-based utility company, to build eleven pulverized coal-fired power plants in Texas. The activists delivered suitcases of coal, but the recipient of their gift was not TXU, and they were a long way from Texas. Instead, their action took place in New York's financial district, where they visited the headquarters of Merrill Lynch - a company that is putting coal and profits above human health and climate change.

Another nail in the US dollar's coffin

Growing political instability in the US will weigh heavily on the dollar during 2007. This weight, combined with growing political pressure for dollar devaluation and a slew of negative economic factors, is likely to prompt significant dollar depreciation against most other currencies. The dollar's decline will help send asset values in the US sharply lower and precious metals prices soaring.

Branding Enemies: Creating Battlefields

By Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich

During the Cold War, the two super powers realized that there was no logic in engaging militarily given that each had the benefit of resorting to nuclear weapons, thus, with the exception of a few proxy wars, their ‘war’ became a war of propaganda to win over minds and hearts. Today, the Bush White House is following the same pattern of warfare replacing communism with Islam. However, much like everything else this administration embarks on, the disastrous consequences of this war have not been deliberated.

Please note that our learned society, The Planetary Association for Clean Energy lends support to the information supplied by Mr. Martin Weatherall to your health unit.

The enclosures may constitute supplementary information to the situation at hand, namely that Brantford is one of communities most affected by the trend of rising levels of environmental radiofrequency / microwave emissions in Southern central Canada.

Note that in follow-ups, we have measured doubled environmental levels to what we have reported earlier - still in dry soil conditions, which means some areas of Brantford can get exposures of up to 20 times more elevated that what we reported in 2005.

We are also including information from the City of Toronto Board of Health on the same issue. It is significant that your community is often exposed to levels above the maximum allowed under the Toronto Board of Health.

Letter to Congress Revised to Respond to New Holt "Voter Confidence" Bill

Please sign (or help revise) this letter to Congress by emailing me your name, address and credentials or affiliations. We have over 200 signees so far.

California has all other states beat by far.

The Letter to Congress was revised tonight to:

1. Stress citizen oversight at the top of the letter, and

2. Respond to the inadequacies of the Holt tiered election audit.

http://electionarchive.org/ucvInfo/US/Letter2Congress.pdf

It has a couple more end notes and an altered paragraph or two.

Thanks to Arthur Keller for helping to make some earlier revisions this a.m., which made it easier for me to revise this now.

Please let me know if the letter to Congress still needs any revisions before tomorrow which is the last day I'll be doing any revisions. And Thursday is the last day I'll be adding any new signatures before my trip back East where I'll visit DC and pass the letter out a little to Congress.

A link to Holt's bill, so you can read it yourself, is here:

http://www.bradblog.com/Docs/HoltBill_FinalDraft_020507.pdf

There are a lot of mischaracterizations of Holt's bill being spread, so read it.

Holt's best provision is that it requires and funds jurisdictions to replace DRE voting systems that do not use voter verified paper ballots as the initial ballot of records, with ballots of archive weight for the official ballots, and which provide voter anonymity.
(thus requiring the replacement of all DRE voting systems which are paperless or use paper rolls and do not meet any of those requirements).

The worst oversight of the Holt bill is the lack of citizen oversight which means that none of its other provisions would be effective.

A message from Hazel

Now it’s official: Iraq’s a mess

Asia Times
by Jim Lobe

02/05/07

Just in case they needed reminding ahead of passing a non-binding resolution on President George W Bush’s plans to send more troops to Iraq, US senators have it officially: a civil war is raging in Iraq and the country’s troubles won’t end any time soon. The US intelligence community’s report also debunks a frequent Bush claim that Iran plays a major role in support of Shi’ite militias...

Bush’s double standard on race in schools

Christian Science Monitor
by Alec Ian Gershberg & Darrick Hamilton

02/05/07

The Supreme Court is considering two school desegregation cases that will probably result in limits on the use of race as a criterion for admission to public elementary and high schools. Not surprisingly, the Bush administration is supporting the plaintiffs’ arguments that the use of such racial criteria is unconstitutional. … But Bush officials are being inconsistent. They don’t apply that standard to their own public education policies. It’s time they embraced the premise of their own student testing rules — race matters — and support efforts to promote access and diversity in schools. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law, is remarkable because it deals with racial issues in a manner at odds with nearly every other policy advocated by the Bush administration — including its current argument to the Supreme Court that school desegregation plans must be ‘race neutral’...

Wasting billions on military spending

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

02/05/07

I know, there are wars on — which is the main justification given for the ballooning defense budget. It is true that during Bush’s tenure, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have squandered a staggering $500 billion — all to actually increase the chances that anti-American terrorism will again occur. But the military services, which play the bureaucratic budget game well, have used the 9/11 attacks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to fund high-tech military toys that have little to do with fighting against terrorism or in Iraq or Afghanistan. And according to the hawks, such as the Journal, the taxpayer should be happy that all of this wasted money, plus some legitimate spending on what should be relatively inexpensive efforts against terrorists, comes in at only 4% of the GDP! No armed force ever fought another — even a guerrilla army or terrorist group — with a percentage of GDP...

Bring Back the Old George W. Bush

Dean Baker writes: "While bipartisan progress would be encouraging, it is very difficult to see any evidence of compromise from President Bush in key areas of public policy. In fact, in almost every important area, the positions he has adopted since the November election have been more extreme than those he had previously advocated. Most of the public has probably failed to recognize President Bush's sharp turn to the right, because the media has chosen to place more emphasis on his public gestures toward the Democratic leadership than his policy proposals."

Republicans Filibuster Senate Debate on War

Republicans have blocked a potentially momentous Senate debate, at least for now, on a bipartisan resolution opposing President Bush's troop buildup in Iraq. Forty-nine senators, almost all Democrats, voted to proceed with the debate, eleven short of the number needed under Senate rules on the issue. Forty-seven senators, nearly all Republicans, voted not to proceed.

ISOO ASKS ATTORNEY GENERAL TO RULE ON CHENEY'S ROLE

In an extraordinary internal challenge to the unruly Office of the Vice President (OVP), the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO) has formally petitioned the Attorney General to direct the OVP to comply with a requirement that executive branch organizations disclose statistics on their classification and declassification activity to ISOO.

For the last three years, Vice President Cheney's office has refused to divulge its classification statistics to ISOO, despite a seemingly explicit requirement that it do so. Prior to 2002, such information had routinely been transmitted and reported in ISOO's annual reports to the President.

The disclosure requirement appears in ISOO Directive 1 (at section 2001.80): "Each agency that creates or handles classified information shall report annually to the Director of ISOO statistics related to its security classification program."

Such ISOO directives "shall be binding upon the agencies," President Bush wrote in Executive Order 13292 (section 5.1). Significantly, an "agency" here means not only a statutorily-defined executive branch agency (which would not include the OVP), but also refers to "any other entity within the executive branch that comes into the possession of classified information" (which would include the OVP).

Last May, the Federation of American Scientists urged ISOO to press for the Vice President's compliance. (SN, 05/31/06).

"Since the Office of the Vice President has publicly staked out a position that openly defies the plain language of the executive order, ISOO now has a responsibility to clarify the matter," we wrote at that time. "Otherwise, every agency will feel free to re-interpret the order in idiosyncratic and self-serving ways."

False Premises

"The media has been complicit in allowing the president to get away with establishing baselines for the debate," writes Andre Stephens. "They ask questions using the false premises already laid out by the administration. Through a combination of repetition by administration officials and the mainstream media, and the absence of real challenges to these premises by Democrats, the nation winds up hearing about 'the way forward' instead of a real and honest debate."

Senate Debate on Iraq Inevitable

A lengthy Senate floor debate on the Iraq war is inevitable, despite a Republican effort to block it, Democrats say. Following a procedural vote Monday that sidetracked a resolution on the war, Democrats said they would eventually find a way to put each senator on record. On the table is a nonbinding resolution backed by several Republicans and most Democrats that would state Senate opposition to President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq.

Watada Lawyer Rebukes Judge

Bill Simpich writes: "'Special security precautions do not erode the presumption of innocence.' Judge John Head's observation captured his style of jurisprudence. Mindful of public relations as several security officers monitored the proceedings in the small courtroom, but vigilant in making sure that every one of First Lt. Watada's witnesses would be deemed 'irrelevant.' Absent a stroke of luck, the lieutenant's defense against the charges of missing movement to Iraq, and 'disgraceful' conduct unbecoming an officer, have been whittled down to his own testimony and that of his commanding officer as a character witness. When Watada's attorney, Eric Seitz, excoriated the proceedings as an 'atrocity' and accused the judge of judicial misconduct, the court's response was almost sheepish."

Symbol of a timid Congress

Salon
by US Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI)

02/02/07

Congress is gearing up for a big Iraq debate next week. The Senate will take up the John Warner-Carl Levin resolution, which some are portraying as an important, symbolic rebuke of the president’s Iraq policy. Symbols can be powerful, but only if they have substance behind them. Read the fine print of the resolution itself, and you will find that it is not a rebuke at all. In parts, it reads like a reauthorization of the war, rejecting troop redeployment and specifically authorizing ‘vigorous operations’ in part of Iraq. This resolution isn’t a symbolic rebuke of the president; instead it symbolizes a Congress that is too timid to challenge the president’s failed Iraq policy.

Holding ourselves hostage in Iraq

When police found Shawn Hornbeck living with his alleged abductor four years after he was kidnapped, the question arose: Why didn’t the 15-year-old simply run away? But trapped and isolated, a hostage can be scared into thinking that the consequences of leaving — for himself or his loved ones — would be far worse than the consequences of staying. So he passes up opportunities to escape. That’s roughly our plight in Iraq...

One-Third of "War on Terror" Vets Have Mental Health Problems

In Search of Support for PTSD

Since leaving Iraq in 2003, Jullian Philip Goodrum - like many soldiers - has been gradually overcoming the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. When he began experiencing mental problems consistent with PTSD, he couldn't get treatment, and he blames the army for their lack of resources.

Parents Blame VA in Fatal Overdose

An Army-funded study published in January in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that almost one in five combat veterans returning from Iraq suffered from PTSD, which increases the risk of substance abuse. Many of those returning troops also suffer physical pain. The dilemma, said Dr. Andrew Shaner, deputy chief of psychiatry and mental health at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, is that "most drugs to treat pain hold potential for abuse."
