Background:

Perchlorate is a component of rocket fuel that contaminates water supplies for approximately 20 million people in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Mexico.

Tiny amounts of perchlorate, the equivalent of a few drops in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, can result in serious health problems. At greatest risk are pregnant women. According to studies released by the Centers for Disease Control and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, perchlorate can interfere with essential body hormones and brain development in the womb and in some cases lead to attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities in young children.

To date, perchlorate has polluted more than 400 drinking water wells in California. The Kerr-McGee perchlorate factory in Henderson, Nevada has also leaked over a million pounds of the toxin into Southern California's Colorado River water supplies. In addition, contamination also plagues dozens of communities, including the cities of Rialto, Colton, Pasadena, San Gabriel Valley, Redlands, Santa Clarita, Sacramento County, Simi Valley, Beaumont, and San Martin.

Despite the threat that perchlorate contamination, polluters are urging Governor Schwarzenegger to let them off the hook. In memos to the media, meetings with decision-makers and on web sites, polluters are urging decision-makers to ignore the health effects of perchlorate on pregnant women and young infants and set a final drinking water standard for perchlorate that does not protect them. They've even hired the same public relations firm that worked for Phillip Morris to downplay the health dangers of second hand smoke.

Please take a moment to email urging Governor Schwarzenegger to set a final standard for perchlorate in drinking water that protects all Californians, including pregnant women and newborn infants.

Families are being urged to fight plans for two phone masts in Thorpe, just weeks after campaigners defeated another mast in the area.

T-Mobile wants to install a 12m monopole, plus telecommunications equipment and cabinets, on the island at the junction of the Ring Road and Pound Lane, opposite Sainsbury's.

Pre-application consultation is continuing until February 9 on plans by Vodafone to put six dishes on the existing St William's Way mast, to improve its mobile phone network in the area.

Campaigner Andy Street, 69, of Eastern Avenue, Thorpe, said: “My main concern is that people in the area don't seem to know about the plans.

“I'm urging people to get in their comments to the councils as soon as possible. Neighbours tell me they are getting a petition together but letters have more credence. With the help of the Evening News, we managed to get plans for a similar phone mast in Dussindale turned down, and we can do it again.”

Thorpe town councillor Peter Harwood, a governor of St William's Primary - close to the St William's Way mast, - said: “I'm particularly concerned about the plans for the St William's mast, because I don't think it requires planning permission. People should be writing to Broadland council, because it has a duty of well-being. The fear of illness can be just as debilitating as the real thing.

“It's regrettable that phone companies are still determined to go ahead, despite residents' objections.”

Last December, Broadland District Council refused an application by 3, formerly Hutchison 3G, to put up a 22.5m phone mast on land off Pound Lane in Thorpe.

Comments on either plan can be sent to Thorpe Town Council, before February 12, and Broadland District Council up until February 15.

The above site lists EMF’s (electromagnetic fields) as TOXIC.

Certainly sitting or standing very close to a TV for extended periods of time would not be good.

However, the issues surrounding reduction of Melatonin and restoration of circadian rhythm, etc. — adverse effects of improper sleep all related to sleeping close to electrical items at night is “a major concern!!”

Electric and gas meters, ANY electric clock, monitors, fans, touchlamps, lamps with dimmer switches, power supply boxes for games and cordless phones, and much more including but not limited to improper wiring or waterpipes carrying currents over or under beds are all potentially deadly depending upon proximity and amount of chronic prolonged exposure.

Night after night of improper sleep/lack of sleep contributes to every health problem from poor sleep to cancer.

I am a non-accredited EMF/EMR researcher with over 15 years’ experience as a victim myself (high voltage powerlines only 50 ft. from front of our house), grandmother of two boys diagnosed w/rare immune deficiencies AND research in my own home exposing guinea pigs to our back bedroom wall — exactly where our children slept while growing up and our grandchildren after that (daycare).

Bottom line: when “close sleeping exposures” were reduced, lab results confirmed improvement that was also being observed and documented.

Similar circumstances re guinea pig exposures, however, one out of each set of two guinea pigs tragically died within 30 days’ exposure.

The guinea pigs’ tests revealed a “collapse of immune function” — severe neutropenia and lymphocytosis!!!

I moved my husband’s electric clock radio. He had been diagnosed w/Alzheimers about two years ago.

My husband is now said not to have Alzheimers!! He is, however, still suffering moderate to severe memory and cognitivie impairment.

I believe the electric clock radio increased damage I did not know was occurring due to taking statins.

While this part of my commentary may not seem to pertain to concerns re autism, additional research I have done re certain vitamins and supplements indicate persons need to be very aware that, under circumstances of chronic EMF/EMR exposure — particularly when one’s body is trying to restore circadian rhythm/function of hormones, etc., even Vitamin C can become a free radical.

My concerns relate both to things consumed during the prenatal period but also anything prescribed for newborn, toddlers, or children or persons of any age regarding a combination of exposures that have the potential to wreak havoc on particularly the central nervous system.

While this website is important and interesting, I do not think the EMF issue is being given the serious attention needed in order to help the persons the government is trying to keep “uninformed.”

I am also concerned when a specific request is made to contact Dr. Perlmutter directly and the only response is “waiting for your comment on the blog!!!”

„Die angegebenen Strahlenwerte von 3,14 Prozent des Grenzwertes, die für die Realschule vorliegen, scheinen niedrig. Jedoch können schon bei weit niedrigeren Werten Gesundheitsprobleme auftreten wie Konzentrationsprobleme, Lernstörungen, Kopfschmerzen, Schwindel oder Nervosität. Die Strahlenschutzkommission gibt Empfehlungen, besonders für Kinder. Warum tut sie dies, wenn es keinen Grund zur Besorgnis gibt, wenn diese Technologie unschädlich ist“, gibt die Elterninitiative zu bedenken.

A couple days ago we heard that Republicans were working to scuttle a resolution opposing the new tactically and strategically doomed proposed increase in troop deployments to Iraq. Now we hear the Harry Reid has totally caved in and signed on to a watered down subservient compromise that says, get this, it "should not be interpreted as precipitating any immediate reduction in" troop levels. The Washington Post is calling the totally neutered resolution "weak". And now we learn it's not 21,000, it's as many as 48,000 including support personnel.

When is Congress going to be strong? When are they going to stand up for what the American people are calling for, an IMMEDIATE REVERSAL in direction, to bring the troops home, to stop the insanity which is our military posture in Iraq. The despicably cowardly compromise goes further and states, "The Congress should not take any action that will endanger United States military forces in the field, including the elimination or reduction of funds for troops in the field." The last time we checked that biggest factor in endangering our troops was the fact that they were THERE at all.

They might as well call it the American Troop Death Warrant And Dismemberment Act of 2007. This is NOT what the American people want. This is NOT what we voted for. Hear us Congress. Stop whining and get out there and fight, just like you expect from our involuntarily re-mobilized troops, who no longer have any choice in the matter.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the savings rate for all of 2006 was a negative 1 percent, meaning that not only did people spend all the money they earned but they also dipped into savings or increased borrowing to finance purchases. The 2006 figure was lower than a negative 0.4 percent in 2005 and was the poorest showing since a negative 1.5 percent savings rate in 1933 during the Great Depression. For December, consumer spending rose a solid 0.7 percent, the best showing in five months, while incomes rose by 0.5 percent, both figures matching Wall Street expectations...

STRONG objections have been lodged against a proposed mobile phone mast less than 300 metres from seven Rustington nurseries, playchools and toddler groups.

Primary and secondary schools have to be consulted by mobile networks when masts are planned nearby, but it appears that none of the nurseries and other groups have been informed about the proposed site, at the junction of The Street and Woodlands Avenue.

Rustington Parish Council has highlighted the closeness of the pre-school facilities in a letter to Arun District Council, opposing the O2 mast.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Arun councillors were being recommended to object to the 15m tall structure, resembling a telegraph pole, on the grounds that it would be a "prominent and obtrusive feature".

Adrian Fielding, co-owner with his wife, Gemma, of the Early Bird Nursery School in Woodlands Avenue, which has 60 younger children on its books, said of the mast: "We don't want it there. It's completely the wrong place. If schools for older children are consulted about masts, then it should be the same for pre-schools, but we haven't been consulted."

And Sim Dendy, of Arun Community Church, which runs the Playcentre nursery in The Street, which takes 45 children, said the church was concerned about the proposed mast and would be finding out more information, with a view to writing to Arun.

In its objection, the parish council lists both pre-school facilities, along with Riverslea Nursery and Noah's Ark toddlers' group, both meeting in the parish church hall, The Street, and the Tiddlers, Mod Mums and Rascals groups, all based in the Methodist church hall in Claigmar Road.

The parish council also raised concerns that the mast would be close to a public seat and a café with outside seating, and the equipment cabinet for the mast could block drivers' views, making a highway hazard.

A DETERMINED protester has threatened county court action against mobile phone giant 02 if it does not reverse its plans to site a mast near Drayton School.

Mary Jenvey of Powys Grove, Banbury, told the company in an angry letter this week that "campaigners will not accept this decision" to site the mast on Oxfordshire County Council-owned land next to Trinity Close close to Drayton School and Drayton Playgroup.

When the plans were first announced last June Mrs Jenvey and other parents spoke of their fears for children's safety, especially in relation to cancer.

Now Mrs Jenvey said she will turn to Banbury County Court if the mast, started in October, is completed by the company.

"We will look to our rights contained in a Code 17 of the Electronic Communication Code to apply to the county court for removal of the mast," she said.

"I know this has been successful in some cases and should the need arise we will give due consideration as to whether it is appropriate to seek the intervention of the courts.

"If this proves to be unsuccessful we will apply to the Lands Tribunal to gain compensation for the devaluation of our properties."

Mrs Jenvey has now formed a group called BATMAN (Banbury Against Telephone Masts Action Network).

OSSETT councillors are calling on residents to block plans for a mobile phone mast – earmarked for a site close to a primary school.

Wakefield Council has received an application from T-Mobile (UK) Ltd to place a telegraph pole-style mast on land at Royds Mill, Leeds Road, around 150 metres from Gawthorpe J&I School and nursery.

But councillors are worried about the potential effects of the 10m-high pole and antenna.

Coun Elizabeth Knowles said: “Considering that the council does not permit any masts on any of their buildings, including schools, I think they should listen to people’s calls for this mast not to go ahead so close to Gawthorpe J&I School.”

Coun Alec Metcalf added: “They couldn’t have chosen a worse place. Many of the local residents are very concerned about it and I know the school isn’t too happy either.

“I am urging people to write to the council and object to this proposal.”

A spokesperson for T-Mobile (UK) Ltd said: “This is a carefully planned and sensitively designed project. We have had discussions with the local authority and explored alternative options.

“We have written to the nearest school and the local councillor, but have yet to hear anything. The consultation on this site is of course on-going and we would welcome further discussions.”

Sue Vickerman, headteacher at Gawthorpe J&I School, added: “The school is very concerned about the close proximity of the proposed structure.”

End the Occupation Now! filmed at Busboys and Poets

On January 27, 2007, 500,000 marched against war and occupation in Washington, DC. After this mass demonstration against the war, Kelly Dougherty, co-founder and Executive Director of Iraq Veterans Against War, and Anthony Arnove, author of Iraq: the Logic of Withdrawal spoke at the Bus Boys and Poets cafe. Their talks followed an incredible performance of songs by activist/hip hop artist Son of Nun.

In a moving, personal message that give a glimpse of the everyday tragedy of this war, Kelly Dougherty recounted her experiences as a US national guard MP in Iraq. She gave witness to the miseries endured by the Iraqi people, and the relentless pursuit of profits in Iraq by companies such as KBR.

Anthony Arnove spelled out the disastrous consequences of this war, for the Iraqi people and the US, and made the case for immediate withdrawal of occupation forces, with reparations.

Andy Shallal, owner of co-sponsor Busboys and Poets, and Pamela Pinnock, Events Manager, introduced the program and served as hosts to an overflow audience, with people sitting on the stage. Michele Bollinger of the International Socialist Organization, which co-sponsored the event, served as moderator.
