Das Verwaltungsgericht in Köln hat am Donnerstag eine Klage des weltgrößten Gentechnik- und Saatgutkonzern Monsanto abgewiesen. Nach Darstellung der Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace wollte der US-Gigant im Nachhinein die Herausgabe einer Fütterungsstudie mit seinem Gen-Mais MON863 für unrechtmäßig erklären lassen. Im Juni 2005 habe das Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit diese Studie an Greenpeace zur Einsichtnahme aushändigen müssen. Schon das hatte Monsanto damals gerichtlich verhindern wollen, sei aber bei den Richtern auf taube Ohren gestoßen. Der massive juristische Aufwand des Konzerns lässt nach Auffassung von Greenpeace erahnen, für wie heikel Monsanto die Studie selbst erachtet.

Die britische Ärzteorganisation Medact kritisiert Pläne von Premierminister Tony Blair, die britischen Trident-Atomwaffen "zu modernisieren". Auch so genannte Mini-Nukes mit nur einer Kilotonne Sprengkraft würden im Fall einer Anwendung Tausende von Menschen töten, so die britische Sektion der Internationalen Ärzte für die Verhütung des Atomkrieges (IPPNW). Senioren unter der Armutsschwelle: Zwei Millionen Rentnerinnen leben offenbar unterhalb der Armutsschwelle (07.12.06)

Der Präsident des Sozialverbandes VdK, Walter Hirrlinger, geht davon aus, dass sich die Zahl der von Armut bedrohten Rentner in den kommenden Jahren noch drastisch erhöhen wird. Nach den vom Statischen Bundesamt vorgelegten EU-weiten Daten leben bereits jetzt rund die Hälfte der über 20 Millionen Senioren in akuter Armutsgefährdung, so Hirrlinger. Allein über zwei Millionen Rentnerinnen müssten monatlich mit 650 Euro auskommen und lägen damit erheblich unter der offiziellen Armutsschwelle von 856 Euro. Die Rente mit 67 sei "nichts anderes als ein weiteres Rentenkürzungsprogramm".

The Forest Service recently announced a proposal to log parts of the 5,900-acre Hell Canyon Roadless Area in Colorado's Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest. Hell Canyon is a pristine area, and an essential habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including mountain lions, black bears, elk, mule deer, wild turkeys, blue grouse and northern goshawks. Named by early explorers for its rugged landscape, the canyon also includes a foraging area for peregrine falcons and the headwaters for several streams; it also may contain ecologically valuable stands of old growth trees. Because the canyon has been left untouched until now, it remains a very special island of solitude, and most Coloradans, as well as Americans across the country, want these wildlands protected.

Although the Forest Service's overall proposal includes some important goals, including protecting houses on private land near the forest from fires, most of the proposed logging in the roadless area is far from any homes, and is not necessary to protect these or any other structures. Moreover, the proposed logging project could destroy important wildlife habitat and violate the Roadless Rule that protects roadless areas nationwide from harmful logging and road construction. Logging and roadbuilding could even increase fire risk by drying out the woods and increasing access for motor vehicles and people.

The Forest Service is accepting public comments on its proposed logging project through December 11th.

== What to do == Send a message, before the December 11th deadline, urging the Forest Service not to log roadless areas in Hell Canyon unless they are within 100 yards of buildings or private property.

I urge you to ensure that the Thompson River Fuels Reduction Project protects the Hell Canyon Roadless Area. According to the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Hell Canyon provides essential habitat to an incredible array of wildlife, including mountain lions, black bears, elk, mule deer, blue grouse, northern goshawks and peregrine falcons.

I support legitimate methods to reduce the risk of forest fire, but logging activity in remote areas is unnecessary to protect homes from forest fires and may actually increase forest fire risk to local communities by creating slash and increasing access to the forest. Logging in this area also could damage the remaining old growth forest and key wildlife habitat. For these reasons, I encourage you to plan logging in the Hell Canyon Roadless Area only within 100 yards or so of private land with a home or other occupied structure, where the owners are committed to doing their part to make the property fire-safe, and where the activities are unequivocally allowed by the 2001 Roadless Rule.

I also oppose the construction of any new roads for the project, whether they are designated permanent or not, and urge you to concentrate all activities on land immediately adjacent to private land with homes that need protection. This is the proven way to protect homes and communities, and should be the highest priority for the Forest Service.

Dear Dr. Albert: The need to notify the public about moving electric items (and some phone equipment) away from close proximity to beds is "critical!!!"

I have a copy of an article from "USA Today" (1993) that recommends moving all electric appliances away from beds. This contains a file reference to "radiation" and was sent to me by the American Cancer Society in 1994.

Two of our grandsons were diagnosed with "rare immune deficiencies" (low IgG subclasses 1 and 3 while infant/toddler ages -- signifiies "AGING") and "got well" after we moved their beds away from electric meters. The meters are/were mouned on the outside of the boys' bedroom walls.

I conducted guinea pig studies in my home. Their CBC's with diffs indicated severe neutropenia, lymphocytosis and hypersegmented neutrophils (slowed DNA synthesis/"markers for irradiation"). One out of each set of two guinea pigs died within 30 days after their cage was placed against our back bedroom wall opposite the electric meter.

One guinea pig lived for over two more years in our basement with "ambient milligauss readings" of between 3.5 to 4.5 mg at side of cage. She died from "Reactive Renal Amyloidosis" (a TSE-like problem -- "mad cow family of diseases"). We have two high voltage powerlines only 50 ft. from the front of our house. I also discovered a waterpipe that is carrying high current that was close to the cage.

My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimers about 17 months ago in spite of a PET Scan that did not reveal any pathology to explain his severe cognitive and memory problems. At that time, he had improved in one portion of his Executive Function. "Improvement" came about after I moved his electric clock radio off of his nightstand.

Shortly after that, I discontinued my husband's statin (Lipitor). Well-known to cause memory and muscle problems (although being kept from the public -- see www.spacedoc.net ), statins are wreaking all sorts of havoc, not the least of which is robbing one's brain of protection by reducing one's own production of Coenzyme Q-10. Cholesterol, itself, also offers brain protection.

My husband is now said to "not have Alzheimers" and he also recently improved in three areas of his Executive Function Test. Unfortunately, he is said to have "moderate to severe cognitive and memory impairment." I consider the combination of "close electromagnetic radiation exposure at night" PLUS ingestion of any statin, to be "a deadly combination!!!"

I give my husband several melatonin capsules (without Vitamin B-6) every night as well as a large number of other supplements including Coenzyme Q-10, selenium, magnesium, ginko biloba, etc.

You most likely know that the Leukemia drug, Gleevec, was at least at one time being considered as possible treatment for Alzheimers. Obviously, "inflammation" pertains to the development of Leukemia as well as formation of amyloid in Alzheimers' patients. Chronic inflammation is also associated with immune deficiencies.

SO, in our family alone, we have grandsons with chronic inflammation -- unrelenting asthma and sinus infections -- with diagnosis of "rare immune deficiency." No genetic link. When I brought up subject of high voltage lines in front of our house (we were daycare providers at the time of diagnosis), the Immunologist said, "well, we do know EMF's affect immune function in mice, but we don't know how much of what happens to mice happens to people.....!!!"

We had four guinea pigs with severe immune decline -- one who died later from "reactive" kidney amyloidosis -- all related to "chronic, prolonged, low level EMF/EMR exposure (electric meters).....

Our daughter has 21 noncaseating granulomas on her lungs and trachea, the cause of which remains "unexplained." She slept in a bed close to two electric meters as a child.

I was diagnosed with "pre-senile dementia" many years ago. It was only in the past few months that I realized the gas meter is the "likely culprit" regarding my health problems at that time. Not knowing the gas meter was behind "pillow position" of my bed, I just happened to move to a different location and began taking melatonin. Moving away from the gas meter (also clock radio on opposite side of bed -- induces currents on metal mattress springs), would have helped to restore natural production of melatonin also.

I have been "on a mission" to save children from Leukemia ever since. I have now been researching the toxic effects of "chronic, prolonged EMF/EMR exposures" (particularly those at night when one's body is trying to restore circadian rhythm, etc.) for well over 15 years.

Bonnie Boyum, RN (Vet's Hospital in Minneapolis) lost her 23 yr. old son to Leukemia. She phoned to tell me Michael had an electric clock and small fan on the headboard of his waterbed. Bonnie has extended permission to use her name and Michael's name in order to promote awareness in an effort to help save others.

I know of a case in the UK re a young boy dying from Leukemia. He slept close to an electric meter and a burglar alarm.

Another case in Australia -- I have the EMF measurements (file) by utility/government officials -- a teen boy died from Leukemia. His mom strongly suspects the electric meter he slept close to as the cause.

I have a booklet that was intended for distribution to power company clients as well as schools, that was prepared by the utilities' communications' experts that suggests one might want to replace electric clocks with battery-operated or wind-up clocks. This was printed after the $46 mil EMF RAPID Study -- the resultant EMF Interagency Committee Report has never been presented to Congress designating low level EMF's as Class 2B carcinogens -- and was "taken out-of-print in 2001.....!!!"

I am aware of the fact that research is ongoing re developement of drugs to halt and/or reverse formation of amyloid. While such efforts are important, we victims are pleading for the release of information to the public regarding "prevention!!!"

It is becoming more and more difficult to keep up with all of the press releases, etc. regarding younger and younger persons having cognitive and memory problems and many being diagnosed as having EOAD (early onset Alzheimers' Disease). As you know, compartively speaking, very few cases of Alzheimers are genetically linked.

I sent a plea to the Alzheimers' Association Media for the release of "prudent avoidance information" to the public while awaiting further studies. My plea(s) remain "unanswered.....!!!"

Someone needs to step up and take responsibility for informing the public that simple, cost-free (exception of possibly purchasing a battery-operated clock) measures can be taken that may help stem-the-tide re development of all health problems all the way from poor sleep to cancer!!! Alzheimers, alone, will wipe out Medicare if nothing is done in regard to "prevention!!!" This is "an avoidable healthcare crisis.....!!!!"

[jcm file comments: Female age 19 (residence south of Minneapolis, MN - also lives in college dorm, 2-room no close electrical items except possibly electric clock close to bed in dorm plus at home -- relative of jcm) said to have MRI that shows "migraine pattern." In looking up that term, I came across above study re "cerebral white matter hyperintensities on MRI." This study plus other info indicates it is unusual for the white matter hyperintensities to show up in pediatric patients (age 19 is only a year over age of "pediatric patient" status) and I also located info that this occurs primarily in the elderly (AGING) and also that this is an "immune-related change." JCM opinion: Consistent with EMF/EMR bedside exposure. Mom indicates affected daughter sleeps close to an electric clock........ Patient seen today at University of Minnesota (12-8-06) after having been to local ER three times, having MRI, CT scan, spinal tap and two separate rounds of blood tests.......obviously I informed mom the clock must be moved...... "AGING" and "rare immune deficiency" related to two grandsons' electric meter exposure also.......do not yet have comments by University of Minnesota Emergency Room (hopefully also a Neurologist) .....12-8-06 ]

Dear Dr. Bohnsack: It is imperative that the parents of these two boys be contacted immediately regarding probable exposure to electrical items at night. Due to privacy issues, if it is possible to get my contact information to them by whatever route, I would be glad to share my experiences and information at no cost and also to provide references for EMF/EMR mitigation re possible improper wiring and/or grounding problems, etc.

I will send you a copy of a recent email to a member of the Alzheimers' Task Force -- my stories are long. During this "holiday season," time is limited for all but I am glad to share any and all details that will help you to help others.

The "bottom line" re your above-cited study is that I have two grandsons (cousins) who were diagnosed with rare immune deficiencies (also with no name but ony the definition of "hypogammaglobulinemia"). Both boys were deficient in IgG subclasses 1 and 3 (signifiying AGING) and they were infant/toddler ages at the time.

I discovered the boys were both sleeping close to electric meters in their own homes. They were also taken out of waterbeds and beds were replaced with standard beds. In spite of metal mattress springs -- known for carrying currents induced by electrical items and wiring close to beds, both boys' overall IGG's rose within five months of the changes. Both boys' problems were related to B-cells. One of the boys has a sister who does not have the immune deficiency but she also did not sleep next to the electric meter. Our home (daycare providers) as well as homes of both boys are/were less than 200 ft. from high voltage powerlines. The "only change" was reducing amount of "close, chronic, prolonged exposure at night" plus discontinuing daily care in our home.

I conducted guinea pig studies in my home to determine how much of the boys' exposures were related to waterbeds versus the close proximity to electric meters. One out of each set of two guinea pigs died within 30 days' of exposure!! One lived a couple more years in our basement (in spite of EMF's in range between 3.5 mg and 4.5 mg but died due to Reactive Renal Amyloidosis. That particular guinea pig initially developed osteomyelitis in one leg in addition to severe neutropenia, lymphocytosis and hypersegmented neutrophils. Three other guinea pigs were identified with same blood changes but they did not develop osteomyelis. After the move to the basement, the osteomyelitis disappeared much to the surprise of the vet.

All four of my guinea pigs (two sets of two each) developed "hyperactive airways." Asthma was also a chronic problem in both boys. I now believe the boys' breathing problems were due to hyperoxic changes/epithelial injury as opposed to a more allergic-type problem such as asthma.

I am in the process of writing a book with Prof. Olle Johansson, Karolinska Institute, titled "Inflammation and EMF/EMR" and have an accumulation of hundreds of studies related to all of the above subjects. Let me know if I can be of any help to you.

You will see from the other email I am forwarding (one to Dr. Marilyn Albert/Alzheimers' Task Force), that electric clocks are also a major concern. I would be glad to send you a copy of the "USA Today" article that I received from the American Cancer Society in 1994 recommending persons move electric clocks, etc. away from close proximity to beds. I have similar info that was prepared by power company consultants.

Happy New Year, and thank you for all you do to keep us informed. Your work is greatly appreciated.

One little tidbit. Perhaps you are already aware, but Dr. Perlmutter was the physician for Susan Reynard in 1993 and was a witness in the law suit that David Reynard brought againt the cell phone industry that year claiming cell phones caused his wife's brain cancer and consequent death. Dr. Perlmutter and Mr. Reynard appeared on Larry King Live with Susan Reynard's brain scans and pointed out the proximity of her brain tumor to the area where she used her cell phone. He was the first physician to postulate publicly that cell phones were a cause of brain cancer and it was his courage and forthrightness about his concern that catapulted cell phones and brain cancer into the national spotlight. That appearance led the cell phone industry to hold a press conference where they claimed thousands of studies proved cell phones to be safe. There were no relevant safety studies in reality, and when that was made clear a few days later following media inquiry, Congressional hearings were ordered that uncovered that cell phones were given a waiver by the FDA in pre-market testing -- so they were put into commerce with no safety testing -- and that eventually led to the WTR research program which I headed through the 1990s.

Dr. Perlmutter was one of the early heroes.

As I am sure you will agree, society can no longer afford not to "actively inform the public" regarding probable adverse effects of sleeping close to electric appliances. Since the American Cancer Society used to furnish EMF information re "prudent avoidance" -- recommendations to move electric items away from close proximity to beds -- I am interested in your comments as well as Dr. Perlmutter's opinion regarding a "focused effort" in this regard.

Prof. Olle Johansson is willing to do the sort of studies needed to confirm EMF/EMR-related toxicity as being causal in the cases of my two grandsons who were diagnosed with rare immune deficiencies. The "bottom line" is that both boys "got well" after their beds were moved away from walls opposite electric meters. The chances of even one boy having their particular IgG subclass deficiency was considered to be "infitismal." Then his cousin (living in another city) was identified........

The facts reported in the Alzheimers' study involve another aspect of the EMF/EMR problems -- that of being too far away from antennas which necessitates "stronger signals." There are many variables but identifying the need for minimum recommended distances from certain sources will help greatly toward making responsible decisions re all exposures.

Dr. Perlmutter needs to know about Prof. Johansson's major concerns and dedication to the increasingly desperate cause -- "EMF/EMR-related toxicity" due to close, chronic, prolonged exposures. The dangers of sleeping close to electrical items should be emphasized in speeches, during interviews and in publications while awaiting additional studies re the more distant chronic, prolonged exposures such as residences and other facilities located within certain distances from telecommunications' antennae, high voltage powerlines, substations, etc.

Studies and recommendations are, of course, also needed regarding chronic, prolonged cell phone usage as well as radio and monitoring equipment, etc. used in many professions. Many workers including police and firemen carry RF-emitting technology in close contact with their bodies every day of the week. Many "innocent victims" are also sleeping close to some of the same equipment they are exposed to on-the-job!

As you and Dr. Perlmutter already know, vitamins, supplements, diet, exercise and other "healthy alternatives," do help mitigate at least some of the harm from low dose radiation -- whether ionizing or nonionizing.

It will take the combined, serious efforts of many caring persons to begin to help patch up our downward-spiraling healthcare system.........

I have new information regarding a gene re melatonin synthesis that pertains to autism, Alzheimers and all neurodegenerative disorders. Close, chronic, prolonged EMF/EMR exposures on nightstands and headboards and other bedroom exposures, are causing every health problem all the way from poor sleep to cancer!!!

Any time you think "common sense" is something that "the powers-that-be" might consider, I am more than willing to testify before Congress about this tragic situation that if allowed to continue to spin out-of-control, has the potential of literally wiping out our healthcare system!!!

If you would like the study re the gene as well as other supporting melatonin studies re autism and Alzheimers, I am also glad to send that information.

You might try and follow-up to see why Dr. Marilyn Albert doesn't at least have enough consideration to express concerns regarding my email (above). Residents have spoken of their relief that another application to erect a mobile phone mast in their community has been rejected.

Preston Council's planning committee turned down Vodafone's revised application for a 20-metre lattice tower with three antennas.

They had previously refused a bulkier design on the Paddock, at the RSPCA shelter in Ribbleton.

Ribbleton Coun Nick Pomfret, who made a presentation to the committee on the residents' behalf, pointed out there had been a 375-signature petition from locals.

He said he couldn't see much difference between the latest plans and those submitted previously.

He said: "This mast will spoil the view looking over Grange Valley and park, a nationally recognised green space."

Coun Alan Hackett said it wasn't just an open space, but a well-used park area and said that some of the 12 alternative sites considered and not chosen were "red herrings".

The mobile phone giants had originally planned to install the antenna near Ribbleton Library but this, too, was opposed by locals.

The Teeling family, whose house backs on to the proposed site, said they were relieved by the decision and urged locals to be alert for future mast applications.

Mum-of-two Julie called the design a "climbing frame" and said: "We are delighted with the decision, or should we say relieved.

A Vodafone spokesman said: "Because the decision was only made on Monday it's too early to say what we are going to do. We have a right to appeal the decision."

Here is the text of the resolution that passed yesterday by the Technical Guidelines Development Committee after the initial resolution was rejected on Monday:

"Election officials and vendors have appropriately responded to the growing complexity of voting systems by adding more stringent access controls, encryption, testing, and physical security to election procedures and systems. The TGDC has considered current threats to voting systems and, at this time, finds that security concerns do not warrant replacing deployed voting systems where EAC best practices are used.

To provide auditability and proactively address the increasing difficulty of protecting against all prospective threats, the TGDC directs STS to write requirements for the next version of the VVSG requiring the next generation of voting systems to be "software independent. The TGDC directs STS and HFP to draft usability and accessibility req. to ensure that all voters can verify the independent voting record. The TGDC further directs STS and CRT to draft requirements to ensure that systems that produce the independently verifiable voting records are reliable and provide adequate support for audits."


This Technical Guidelines Development Committee resolution does not require that any existing voting systems be "software independent", but does require this for the upcoming 2007 voluntary voting system standards. Existing systems do not ever have to meet the new standards unless individual states require it.

Hence, we'll need the US Congress to pass legislation requiring software indepence and funding systems that are fully auditable
(optical scan paper ballot systems) to replace any unauditable systems like the paperless DREs used in MD, GA, and parts of PA and FL (and other places).

That is why these 15 recommendations for federal legislation to ensure the integrity of our democracy are so important to let our congressional representatives and senators know about:

A MOTHER-of-two is "disgusted" that a 15-metre high phone mast at the back of her garden could be made bigger.

Janine Lazarus, of Colburn Avenue, Hatch End, rang Harrow Council to find out when she could attend a planning meeting to object to the proposal but claims she was given the wrong date.

Janine said: "I want people to know about this, it's absolutely disgusting. I think it's very bad that the council aren't giving residents the opportunity to speak about it.

"The phone mast is very big, it is very visible and the views of the farmland have been ruined."

O2 plans to extend the phone mast - just 50 metres from her house - to 17-and-a-half metres high, install satellite dishes on the mast and place three equipment cabinets around it.

But Peter Brown, a spokesman for Harrow Council, said: "We are sorry if there has been some confusion over the date.

"Last month the council changed the process of dealing with planning issues so that it is more streamlined.

"This issue was always due to be discussed at the development management committee on December 13 and not at the strategic planning committee on 6 December, but it may be that Mrs Lazarus was inadvertently given the incorrect date on the phone.

"If that was the case we can only apologise."

Janine, her husband Paul, 13-year-old son Adam and her four-year-old daughter Eliana, can already see the mast fom their back garden.

Janine said: "The Stewart report recommends that phone masts shouldn't be put up so close to houses and it's right by the playing fields used by Grimsdyke First and Middle School too. It's just a saftey hazard because children are at the highest risk from having problems as a result of the radiation from the phone mast because their brains aren't formed properly."

T-mobile will also have joint usage of the mast, which was erected on a green belt site which is on farmland at Pinner Wood Farm.

Jim Stevenson, community relations manager for O2, said: "There has to be at least one metre between our antennas and T-mobile's otherwise they will interfere with each other and that is why there has been such a big increase in height."

Janine added: "When the mast went up two years ago my daughter was only two years old and I took some readings of the levels of radiation in the house and they were high, although a phone company would never admit to it.

"I went to five other houses away from the area to make sure my findings were correct and there weren't any readings."

Cllr Marilyn Ashton, portfolio holder for planning development and enterprise at Harrow Council, said: "We always take people's concern's seriously and we will come to a decision based on all points of view."

Immer mehr Hartz-IV-Empfänger werden bestraft

„Die Jobcenter sprechen immer häufiger Sanktionen gegen Arbeitslose aus. Fast 60 Prozent mehr Hartz-IV-Empfänger werden bestraft, weil die Behörden immer sicherer mit Sanktionen umgehen können. Aber es trifft nicht alle Arbeitslosen gleich hart: Die Jobcenter in Ostdeuschland sind vorsichtiger in ihren Maßnahmen. Die Jobcenter greifen härter gegen arbeitsunwillige Hartz-IV-Empfänger durch. Innerhalb eines Jahres stieg die Zahl der Sanktionen um 58 Prozent an. Während im September 2006 erst 87.500 Sanktionen ausgesprochen wurden, waren es im September 2007 nach der aktuellsten Statistik schon 138.700. „Aussagen über Anzahl und Art von Sanktionen gegen Empfänger von Arbeitslosengeld II (Alg II) können derzeit noch nicht getroffen werden. Wie die Bundesregierung in ihrer Antwort (16/8284) auf eine Kleine Anfrage der Fraktion Die Linke (16/8011) weiter ausführt, befinde sich ein entsprechendes Auswertungskonzept derzeit aber im Aufbau. Gleichwohl könne gesagt werden, dass Sanktionen am häufigsten wegen eines Meldeversäumnisses ausgesprochen würden. Der Anteil von unter 25-Jährigen sei dabei deutlich höher als der von Älteren. Im Jahr 2006 seien insgesamt 45.415 Widersprüche gegen Sanktionsbescheide erhoben worden, von denen 11.873 ganz und 1.007 teilweise Erfolg gehabt hätten. Im Jahr 2007 gab es laut Regierung 64.857 Widersprüche gegen Sanktionsbescheide; 22.491 wurde vollumfänglich und 1.839 wurde teilweise stattgegeben. Im vergangenen Jahr seien 3.005 anhängige Klageverfahren erledigt worden. Prince Charles launched his 'green revolution' with a stark warning that we are all 'living on borrowed time' if we don't stop eating up the world's resources.

In a forthright speech in front of leading figures, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Prince said: 'We are consuming the resources of our planet at such a rate that we are, in effect, living off credit and living on borrowed time.

'It is our children and grandchildren who will have to pay off this debt and we owe it to them and ourselves to do something about it before it is too late.'

The Prince launched his Costing The Earth -- The Accounting For Sustainability project at a forum at St James's Palace attended by politicians and business and faith leaders.

They included the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, Lord Browne, chief executive of BP, and former US vice president Al Gore, a leading environmentalist whose film An Inconvenient Truth warns the world must act now to save itself.

The former Democratic US presidential candidate praised Charles's green initiative in a video message to the forum. He said it may be 'one of the most important initiatives' and stressed: 'We need to continue the effort to solve the climate crisis.'

The heir to the throne is determined to reduce his carbon footprint on the world. He encourages his staff to make trips around the capital on bicycle instead of taking cars or cabs.

Actor Stephen Fry and comedian Al Murray have teamed up to make a film in support of the Prince. Fry, a close friend of Charles, plays Planet Earth while Murray, otherwise known as the Pub Landlord, stars as the Moon in the appeal.

The Prince is set to label all his Duchy Originals range with details of greenhouse gases made during their production. The Queen has already gone green at Windsor Castle with a plan to use hydroelectric power.

The Duke of Edinburgh uses a taxi cab fuelled by liquid petroleum gas to travel around London, while water in a bore hole at Buckingham Palace is used to supply air conditioning to the Queen's gallery before topping up the water levels in the Palace lake.

Mr Gore visited Britain in September to promote his film. Charles is said to have met him privately at Highgrove to discuss their mutual passion for the environment.

FURIOUS campaigners could take legal action to shift a mobile phone mast away from their homes.

Villagers in Sheriff Hutton say they will consult lawyers in a last-ditch attempt to move the controversial pole.

The announcement comes after Ryedale District Council decided it had no legal power to intervene.

Senior councillor Keith Knaggs said: "The decision not to relocate the Orange mast at Sheriff Hutton is a bitter pill to swallow for residents in the village and those councillors who fought hard to support them.

"The decision was taken because, in the opinion of a leading QC, Ryedale District Council simply does not have lawful power to do this.

"The fact that the district auditor indicated a willingness to take the council to court does not help."

But resident and anti-mast campaigner John Botting said: "We have been treated absolutely appallingly.

"We will be getting together with the parish council to make sure we understand what this means.

"We are also looking potentially to take legal action to move the mast, although whether that would be against the council or Orange we don't yet know."

Mr Botting - who lives only 65 metres from the mast - will also meet council chiefs later this month to discuss the decision.

He said: "I am devastated, not only because the decision has gone against us, but the way it has been handled."

The two-year saga began when council officials submitted their formal objections to Orange one day too late. That meant the mobile phone company was legally free to go ahead and erect the mast.

Efforts to switch it on, however, have so far failed. As reported in The Press, when engineers arrived to connect it, a tense stand-off with residents resulted in Malton Police being mobilised.

Coun Knaggs said: "The council has left no stone unturned in trying to find a way of correcting the council's initial errors.

"There should be an apology by the council, and I look forward to the council making a contribution to a community project in Sheriff Hutton, as some recompense for the extra distress caused by weak handling of this entire business."

This is one Christmas tree that is unlikely to be covered in lights and decorations this year, at least mobile phone users will hope so as it's really a phone-mast.

Vodafone erected this phone mast - or base station as it's known as in the telecommunications industry - in 2005 near the Cappagh Road in Galway.

A spokesperson for Vodafone said that base stations like this are standard practice and are designed, in consultation with local authorities, to suit the look of the area.

However local residents want the mast to be removed despite its pleasant aesthetics.

They claim that they were not informed of the correct final date to appeal its erection to Bord Pleanala and therefore missed out on their chance to stop it being put in place.

They also allege that is a health risk and damaging to the environment.

The recent Hollywood release, Blood Diamond starring Leonardo DiCaprio, may be on your holiday viewing list. The film has received widespread media attention because it highlights how the illegal diamond trade has helped to fuel and finance armed conflict in parts of Africa.

Gold mining, too, bears the scars of conflict, destruction, and human rights abuse. For example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), armed groups fighting for control of gold mines and trading routes have tortured and killed civilians and used gold sales to buy weapons. Rather than bringing prosperity to the nation, gold has been a cause of enormous human suffering in the DRC.

Uranium mining, nuclear energy development and international agreements (e.g., the recent U.S.-India nuclear cooperation treaty) that foster the nuclear fuel chain violate our basic human rights and fundamental natural laws of Mother Earth, endangering our traditional cultures and spiritual well-being.

We reaffirm the Declaration of the World Uranium Hearing in Salzburg, Austria, in 1992, that "uranium and other radioactive minerals must remain in their natural location." Further, we stand in solidarity with the Navajo Nation for enacting the Diné Natural Resources Protection Act of 2005, which bans uranium mining and processing and is based on the Fundamental Laws of the Dine. And we dedicate ourselves to a nuclear-free future.

Indigenous Peoples are connected spiritually and culturally to our Mother, the Earth. Accordingly, we endorse and encourage development of renewable energy sources that sustain - not destroy - Indigenous lands and the Earth's ecosystems.

In tribute to our ancestors, we continue centuries of resistance against colonialism. We recognize the work, courage, dedication and sacrifice of those individuals from Indigenous Nations and from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, the United States, and Vanuatu, who participated in the Summit. We further recognize the invaluable work of those who were honored at the Nuclear-Free Future Awards ceremony on December 1, 2006. And we will continue to support activists worldwide in their nonviolent efforts to stop uranium development.

We are determined to share the knowledge we have gained at this Summit with the world. In the weeks and months ahead, we will summarize and disseminate the testimonies, traditional Indigenous knowledge, and medical and scientific evidence that justify a worldwide ban on uranium development. We will enunciate specific plans of action at the tribal, local, national and international levels to support Native resistance to the nuclear fuel chain. And we will pursue legal and political redress for all past, current and future impacts of the nuclear fuel chain on Indigenous Peoples and their resources.
