Geemarc DECT poster campaign using children

The Sutton Coldfield Observer are running a story today about two local young boys age 4 and 8. The boys are to be used as the faces to promote the new mobile DECT football phones throughout the UK for Geemarc. I spoke to the sales manager Jacqui MacKinnon from Geemarc today, she said she was completely unaware with regards to health concerns from using DECT phones and would appreciate any research to show the dangers, I would be most grateful if anyone could provide her with research that is currently available, she is also interested in receiving information about the German DECT phone which is now available and does not give out radiation from the base station, contact Jacqui at Jacqui@geemarc.com .

Take a look at the website http://www.geemarc.com and also read the news story about Tony Blair ‘poster boy’. I believe Geemarc’s intentions are good; however they need the research to show it might not be sensible to promote DECT phones especially to children. We need to give them the information and the chance to reconsider the poster campaign using two young boys, please help!

MOBILE FACE OF FOOTBALL

Two football-mad Sutton Coldfield brothers are over the moon after being signed up as the faces of a national campaign to launch a new phone in time for the World Cup. Tom and Elliot White, aged eight and four, from Boldmere, have been chosen to star in the launch of Geemarc’s Football DECT phone this month.

Geemarc UK sales manager Jacqui MacKinnon said the boys, who attend Boldmere Junior School, had been selected for their big smiles and love of football.

She added: “We wanted to have fun photos which really showcase the new phone’s appeal to children and were looking for true football fans.

“When we spotted Tom and Elliot and heard they were not only big fans of Aston Villa but also England, we knew we had the right boys.”

The pictures of the boys will be used as part of a campaign to promote the phone – which is cordless and has a St George design – across the UK.

A Loss for Competitive Elections

"Instead of standing up for a fair electoral landscape, the Supreme Court produced a ruling that did little to ensure the vibrancy of American democracy, and that itself had an unfortunate whiff of partisanship," writes the New York Times Editorial Board.

A President Rebuked

"The only surviving World War II veteran on the Supreme Court, Justice John Paul Stevens, appointed three decades ago by a president as Republican as W., delivered the plain and airtight message: President Bush violated every standard of the military code, the US Constitution and international law with its order for military tribunals at Guantanamo," writes Bruce Shapiro.

Gitmo Ruling Blow to Expanding Presidential Power

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney spent much of their first term bypassing Congress in the service of what they labeled a "different kind of war." Now they will almost certainly plunge into negotiations they previously spurned over the extent of the president's powers, this time in the midst of a midterm election in which Bush's wartime strategies and their consequences have emerged as a potent issue.

The provision may have the unintended consequence of harming several million US citizens who, for a variety of reasons, will not be able to produce the necessary paperwork. They include mentally ill, mentally retarded and homeless people, as well as elderly men and women, especially African-Americans born in an era when hospitals in the rural South barred black women from their maternity wards.

Rosa Brooks points out, "The Supreme Court on Thursday dealt the Bush administration a stinging rebuke, declaring in Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld that military commissions for trying terrorist suspects violate both US military law and the Geneva Convention. Hands-free car phones are 'as dangerous as drink-driving'

James Randerson,
science correspondent
Friday June 30, 2006
The Guardian

Using a hands-free kit while at the wheel is as dangerous as drink driving, according to a study of volunteers in a driving simulator. The researchers conclude that all mobile phone use while driving should be banned.

"Just like you put yourself and other people at risk when you drive drunk, you put yourself and others at risk when you use a cellphone and drive. The level of impairment is very similar," said the report's lead author, David Strayer, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah.

The researchers studied the driving skills of 40 volunteers who followed a virtual car in a driving simulator which was programmed to brake at random.

Each of the volunteers performed the task four times: without distractions, while using a handheld phone, while speaking on a hands-free kit and after downing enough vodka to put them just over the drink-driving limit.

As in previous studies, the researchers found that talking into the phone, whether hands-free or hand-held, impaired their driving. Drivers were 9% slower hitting the brakes, 24% more variable in the distance they kept behind the lead car and 19% slower resuming their normal speed. Their impairment was similar to that when they drove drunk.

Proposed new legislation which is passing through parliament will mean that drivers caught using a hand-held phone will receive three points on their licence. A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents welcomed the move. "We hope that will give the law new teeth," he said.

The society had wanted hands-free kits to be included from the start, he added, although he conceded that this would be difficult to enforce.

"We want people to take the law very seriously," said a spokesman for the Department for Transport. "We don't want people to lose their licence, we want them to hang up."

He said there were no plans to extend the law to cover hands-free kits, but added that users who became distracted and caused an accident risked other penalties. "Don't think you are above the law because you are using hands-free."

Another study, carried out by researchers at the University of Michigan Transport Research Institute, which involved observing 36 drivers covering more than 80,000 miles on the road, found that speaking to passengers could be as distracting as talking on a mobile. Drivers nattering to the person next to them strayed further from the centre of their lane, for example.

Although less research has been done on the effects of distracting passengers, the result goes against conventional wisdom. Researchers had assumed that passengers would be more likely to keep quiet at difficult driving moments.

The 'signing statement' gambit for stretching presidential power was hatched during the Reagan administration. Attorney General Ed Meese instructed Samuel Alito, then a Justice Department lawyer, to analyze how such presidential assertions could buttress the administration's viewpoints in court. But Alito was a piker compared to George W. Bush. Alito declared that the Justice Department should 'concentrate on points of true ambiguity, rather than issuing interpretations that may seem to conflict with those of Congress.' Bush, on the other hand, has used signing statements to negate the most important parts of legislation. According to the Bush administration, if the president issues a signing statement memo that is printed in the Federal Register, federal agencies are not obliged to obey laws enacted by Congress...

The mysterious murder of the electric car

AlterNet
by Hannah Eaves

06/30/06

Interview/film review: "Roughly divided into two segments, 'Who Killed' first addresses the broad history of the electric car, from its birth in the early days of the automobile through its sudden realization and untimely demise. Leased in limited quantities beginning in 1997, the EV was developed by auto companies to fulfill California's mandate even as the companies sought to have the law repealed. When the requirement was altered to their liking in 2003, the cars were taken back and destroyed. The passion and ire of the drivers left behind is touchingly captured in a funeral held for General Motors' flagship electric car, the EV-1. This sets the stage for a dramatic unmasking. Who were the players behind the car's death?

House Votes to End 25-Year Offshore Drilling Ban

House Republicans, led by Rep. Richard Pombo, are intent on cramming offshore oil drilling down our throats. The bill that they passed on Thursday to lift the moratorium on offshore oil drilling contains some unusually coercive measures, including an unprecedented grant of power to the Secretary of Interior over federal aid to states. In typical fashion for this Republican Congress, the full text of the bill was not made available in time for lawmakers to read it and analyze it. Even some Republicans are crying foul.

Watch Us, Wiretap Us, Search Us, Jail Us ...

What explains the gullibility of Americans, a gullibility that has mired the US in disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and which promises war with Iran, North Korea and a variety of other targets if neoconservatives continue to have their way?

Part of the explanation is that millions of conservatives are thrilled at the opportunity to display their patriotism and to show their support for their country. Bush's rhetoric is perfectly designed to appeal to this desire. "You are with us or against us" elicits a blind and unquestioning response from people determined to wear their patriotism on their sleeves. "You are with us or against us" vaccinates Americans against factual reality and guarantees public acceptance of administration propaganda.

Voting Rights Act Reauthorization

Equality in voting is fundamental to the American democratic system. For more than 40 years, the Voting Rights Act has protected the right of every American citizen to cast an informed vote. Consequently, the NAACP strongly encourages Congress to swiftly reauthorize the Voting Rights Act (Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006 [S. 2703/H.R. 9]). http://katrina.naacp.org/r/293/91290

Although the reauthorizing legislation was introduced in Congress on May 2, 2006, on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, a small band of obstructionists in the House of Representatives hampered the reauthorization process by stalling H.R. 9. These congressional obstructionists—like Representatives Lynn Westmorland (GA), Charlie Norwood (GA) and others—represent retrogressive forces that America hasn't seen at this level since the 1960s.

Many of those trying to derail this bill represent states with the most egregious records of discrimination in voting. Their actions would return us to a time when the rights of racial and ethnic minority Americans-specifically the right to vote-were not protected or enforced.

Leaders in the House of Representatives must move past this small group of obstructionists and get the bill back on track immediately. The nation's continued progress towards equality demands this.

Starting on Wednesday, June 27, 2006, the NAACP will join People for the American Way and the National Education Association to hand-deliver signed petitions gathered from around the country to the House leadership.

Tell Congress to stop stalling and renew the Voting Rights Act. Please sign the petition now to tell Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and Majority Leader, John Boehner, to stand up and lead the effort to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act!

I wonder what effect this will have on people. Not only will it increase the ambient readings in the home or office, but I imagine that it will put additional pollution on the wiring. I'd be interested to hear some opinions.

Beware of exploding laptops

Exploding laptops could be deadly, a Canadian research group reported Thursday.

The Ontario-based Info-Tech Research Group pointed out that computer batteries on laptops have caused several product recalls over the past year and pose a threat to personal safety, especially when traveling by air.

"The most recent event we're aware of involved a Dell laptop exploding and bursting into flames at a business meeting in Osaka, Japan," said senior analyst Carmi Levy. "The potential for an in-flight incident of this nature when travelers are using battery power for portable PCs certainly exists. Everyone worries about covert explosives being taken on board planes, but what about the average laptop that could be just as dangerous?"

In April, Hewlett-Packard recalled 15,700 HP and Compaq notebook computer batteries, while Dell recalled about 22,000 notebook computer batteries last December, and Apple Computer recalled 128,000 batteries for its PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 laptops this spring.

nachrichtlich:

Protesters: mast fight goes on

29 June 2006

DETERMINED residents have vowed to continue their protests against a mobile phone mast being put up near a primary school.

Phone company T-Mobile began work on the 11.7-metre-tall mast next to Aldersbrook Bowls Club in Aldersbrook Road, Wanstead, on Friday.

The building work is set to continue despite a long-running campaign by residents who say it poses a cancer risk to pupils at nearby Aldersbrook Primary School in Harpenden Road and St Gabriel's Church pre-school in Park Road.

Military resistance

CounterPunch
by Zoltan Grossman

06/28/06

The public refusals here at Fort Lewis (Washington) of Army 1st Lt. Ehren Watada, Sgt. Kevin Benderman and Spc. Suzanne Swift to deploy to Iraq are the most recent chapter of a long and noble history of resistance within the U.S. armed forces. To understand this history, and where it might lead, it helps to see how resistance varies strongly according to rank, class and race, and how difficult it is for resisters to express their patriotic viewpoints alone, without support from the larger peace movement. ... Opposition within the military is far higher after three years of the Iraq War than it was three years into the Vietnam War. More than 8,000 personnel have deserted since the war began (according to USA Today), about 400 of whom have gone to Canada...

Three years ago, a CIA kidnapping ring was in Italy to snatch a radical imam, Hussan Mustafa Nasr, from a street in Milan. Flown on a CIA plane to his native Egypt, Nasr was held in a dungeon where he was given electric shock treatments, hung upside down, and tortured in various positions. Released and then rearrested, Nasr disappeared in the bowels of the Egyptian prison system. While in Milan setting up the kidnapping, the CIA crew made many calls from their top-of-the-line hotel rooms, but these were not, as the spying trade puts it, on 'secure phones.' So, Italian intelligence agents had no difficulty tracking them -- leading to arrest warrants for these CIA spooks for violating the sovereignty of Italy and its laws. ... The exposure of this CIA kidnapping ring is part of the growing revulsion throughout Europe and other parts of the world against such American gangsterism. As Judge Sparato said in Florence: 'We know it's a great mistake to fight terrorism in this way'...

You'll never find anyone as impartial, disinterested, judicious, and concerned only with the well-being of the American people as a party hack laying into a politician from a rival party. Thus the case for the impeachment of President George W. Bush has grown organically from the very fabric of the universe. It's not that Democrats are motivated by frustration with Bush and his party's electoral winning streak -- h.., the Dems profoundly regret that they've been brought to this! It's that Bush's lies and violations of the Constitution are so egregious, so without precedent in American history, that we must activate the gravest of constitutional mechanisms...

Dad’s desperate plea to mobile phone company

By Linda Piper

Protesters Susan Charge, Jennifer Boswell and Father Raymond from a neighbouring priory are all opposed to the mast BE4556-05

A DESPERATE father is fighting a last-ditch battle to stop a phone mast so he can bring his disabled son home.

Danch Boswell, 69, of Carlton Road, Northumberland Heath, has been battling for three years to bring home his son Levi, 34, who was paralysed after two catastrophic stem cell strokes in June 2003.

Levi, who is married with two children aged eight and four, relies on a range of hi-tec machinery, including a ventilator, to keep him alive. He can only communicate by blinking his eyes.

As his parents were making the necessary alterations to their home, they were told by doctors mobile phones could not be used in the house because of the potential effect on the medical equipment. continued...

So Mr Boswell was horrified to discover that a mobile phone mast, which he thought had been refused permission, is about to be put up just yards from his home.

T-Mobile was refused planning permission by Bexley Council in July last year to site a 10m-high mast on the footpath at the junction of Carlton Road and Erith Road.

But last month a planning inspector overturned Bexley's decision and has told the company it can go ahead and put up the mast.

Mr Boswell has appealed to T-Mobile to find somewhere else for its mast, but although they promised to talk to him, he has still not heard anything back from the company.

His son went into King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill, in June 2003 to have a growth removed from his brain. The operation was a success but Levi, one of twins, suffered a double stroke soon afterwards.

Mr Boswell said the family feared he would die. He started to lose his sight, and with the help of the NHS, the family flew Levi to a German clinic, where his sight was saved.

When his family flew him back to England, Levi spent time at St Thomas' Hospital in central London and at a care home in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, to prepare him to go home.

In the meantime the family started make preparations for his return. His wife and children live in Belvedere, but their home was too small to accommodate Levi, all his equipment and specialist nurses.

So Mr Boswell and his wife Jennifer paid for extensive alterations to their own bungalow so Levi could live with his family again. Bexley Care Trust is providing specialist nursing.

Everything was in place for Levi's return in the next few weeks, when Mr Boswell discovered that the mast is to go ahead.

He told News Shopper: "I am shattered. We don't need this on our doorstep. We cannot risk this mast outside our home.

"We have fought for three years to bring Levi home. If I don't fight for my son, who will?"

All attempts by News Shopper to contact T-Mobile were unsuccessful.

We had no say on mast

Letters

Jun 29, 2006

I would like to inform Aldridge residents, in particular those living within the vicinity of the Lazy Hill shops, of the imminent erection of a mobile phone mast on the top of the Shimla Restaurant/chip shop, which will be in the form of yet another flag pole as already erected on top of the Cedar Tree public house.

This means that we will now have two mobile phone masts in close proximity to each other. All parties concerned have displayed a total disregard for the residents of this area, especially as most of the groundwork appears to have been carried out over a holiday period when people are away.

There has been no public consultation whatsoever in respect of either of these masts despite being a potential health hazard. They are contrary to the wishes of residents and tenants alike.

I would urge anyone who wishes to raise any objections to write to Mr Norman Hickson, Senior Planning Officer, Planning and Transportation, Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council, Civic Centre, Walsall, WS1 1TP.

Mrs S. Mellar, Walsall Wood Road, Aldridge.

Spürbarer Griff in die Taschen der Arbeitnehmer

#Die Linkspartei.PDS: Pressemitteilungen

29. Juni 2006

Bush in Deutschland: Nicht schon wieder!

Juli in Stralsund.

13. Juli statt!

Charities Tied to Doctors Get Drug Industry Gifts

The Midwest Heart Foundation, and the way it has become quietly interwoven into its doctors' professional lives, is far from unique. Around the country, doctors in private practice have set up tax-exempt charities into which drug companies and medical device makers are, with little fanfare, pouring donations - money that adds up to millions of dollars a year. And some medical experts see that as a big problem.

US Emits Half of Car-Caused Greenhouse Gas

American cars and pickup trucks are responsible for nearly half of the greenhouse gases emitted by automobiles globally, even though the nation's vehicles make up just 30% of the nearly 700 million cars in use, according to a new report by Environmental Defense. Cars in the US are driven more miles, face lower fuel economy standards and use fuel with more carbon than many of those driven in other countries, the authors found. The report's authors hope their findings will bolster efforts in Congress to require federal regulators to raise fuel economy standards for vehicles and set a mandatory cap on greenhouse gases from all.

#Die Linkspartei.PDS: Pressemitteilungen

29. Juni 2006

Unser Ansatz bleibt:

* Neue Arbeitsplätze durch eine offensive Beschäftigungspolitik

* Arbeitszeitverkürzung und Überstundenabbau

* Entwicklung eines öffentlich finanzierten Beschäftigungssektors

* Überwindung von Hartz IV hin zu versicherungspflichtigen Arbeitsverhältnissen durch die Bündelung von Mitteln aus Arbeitsmarkt- und Sozialpolitik.

4 Republicans Plead No Contest in Ohio Ethics Case

They were accused of receiving money from prominent GOP donor Tom Noe, then contributing it to President Bush's re-election campaign in their own names in an alleged scheme by Noe to skirt laws limiting individual contributions to $2,000.

Former Bush Spokesman Urges Newspapers to Run Pro-War Stories

Vets for Freedom is a very interesting organization. I call it a Republican front group. It might be more accurate to call it a Republican-financed, pro-war group geared toward helping the Republicans keep control of Congress and the Senate this November.

If the greatness of a nation is measured by how it treats its poor rather than its military expenditure, America must rank near the bottom of the heap. The disparity between rich and poor has never been greater and it is widening at an accelerating pace.

Federal regulators granted the Navy a permit Tuesday to use sonar in a maritime exercise despite environmentalists' concerns it could disturb or even kill whales and dolphins. West Kirby residents defeat telecommunications giant, 02

Tonight West Kirby residents, along with Wirral West Parliamentary candidate, Esther McVey, and Conservative Councillor Jeff Green, celebrated success in Wallasey Town Hall. Over 40 residents attended Wirral's Planning Committee to hear the committee refuse planning permission for a 15 metre high telecommunications mast and ancillary equipment in Orrysdale Road, West Kirby.

Speaking on behalf of local residents at the Planning committee, Cllr. Jeff Green, Conservative Councillor for West Kirby and Thurstaston outlined the concerns of the residents and asked that the Planning Committee refuse the application.

Cllr Green said: "The location identified by 02 is clearly totally unsuitable. The mast would be five metres higher than any of the existing street lights this along with the 1.5 metre high cabinets would create clutter and clearly be detrimental to the visual amenity of the area.

West Kirby resident and mast campaigner, Kate Evans said, "I am delighted by this decision, too often planning permission is given for the erection of poorly-located masts, I have real concerns about the health implications caused by the use of these masts, it's a pity that the Government will not allow the Council to refuse applications on health grounds. Unfortunately because of the current system there is a presumption in favour of development which overrides local, environmental and safety concerns. Clearly on this occasion common sense has prevailed." "I would like to thank all those residents who came together and organised the opposition to this application. It is thanks to their pro-active and robust work in organising the petition of opposition that the officers have recommended refusal. I would also like to thank all the people who attended the planning committee this evening, those who signed the petition and sent in letters opposing the application as well as those who gave their support in many other ways", added Esther McVey 02 have the right of appeal against the planning committee's decision.

Esther and the West Kirby and Thurstaston Councillors have pledged to keep residents informed of any appeal or future planning applications by 02 or any other telecommunications companies.

International Charter is Drawing us Into A Black Hole

by Attorney Scott Tips

We ourselves are passing our own event horizon, even now, as you read this. Without the barest cover of legal authority, in 2004 and with little fanfare, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) inked an agreement called the “Trilateral Cooperation Charter” with their unelected, bureaucratic counterparts in Canada and Mexico.....
