US Commanders Knew Haditha Deaths From Gunfire

Marine commanders in Iraq knew within two days of the killings in Haditha in November that gunfire, not a roadside bomb, had killed Iraqi civilians but they saw no reason to investigate further, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

We can't say no to the masts

..in yesterdays Sussex Argus by of all people a Brighton Tory Councillor, Lynda Hyde.

I've emailed most Councillors re phone masts etc for years - this is the first time such a strong letter has been written by a Councillor.

See below

We can't say no to the masts

Kevin Haestler of Portslade is concerned for the health of his children if a 12.5m mast and base station is erected outside his house (to be precise 0.7 metres away and that is NOT a misprint) and asks why the planning system cannot refuse such applications on health grounds.

The reason is the Government has taken away the rights of local authorities to refuse applications on health grounds.

This is despite the Governments own Stewart Report which calls for a precautionary approach to the positioning of masts.

Masts of 15 metres and above are presented to the planning committee for a decision and many times such applications are refused.

However, if a telecommunications company appeals against the decision, it is then nearly always granted by the appeal inspector.

Again this is because councils are not permitted to refuse the application on health grounds.

Moreover, a mast which does not exceed 15 metres needs no planning consent at all.

A telecommunications operator may erect a mast under "permitted development rights".

The Government speaks of giving a "voice to the people" and then deliberately presses the mute button so they do not have a voice.

Perhaps I should also mention the Government sold licences to telecommunications companies for the magnificent sum of £23 billion.

Could this be the reason powers have been removed from local authorities?

I empathise with the gist of what Cllr Hyde has to say about central government banning the right to turn down such mobile phone installations on health grounds. She is also right in questioning whether this blanket ban has anything to do with the sale of 3G licences for the sum of circa £23 billion. I feel bound to comment on a couple of her other statements, however. This is not to criticise but merely to set the record straight.

It is quite true to say that masts 15 metres or more in height require full planning permission and that applications for such development are often refused. However, it is not correct to say that in the event of appeal, permission is almost always granted. Nor is it true to say that masts not exceeding 15 metres in height require no consent at all.

Ground based installations not exceeding 15 metres in height constitute permitted development through the provisions of Part 24 of the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO) and, other than in exceptional circumstances, applications are subject to the prior approval process which, as successive planning ministers have assured us, is a different procedure from planning permission in name only.

As with applications for planning permission, applications for prior approval are frequently refused but it does not follow that, in the event of appeal, approval is almost always granted by planning inspectors. The figures over the past five years indicate that over 30% of appeals against local planning authorities' decisions to refuse applications for masts are dismissed.

I accede that at present we cannot say no to masts on health grounds alone, albeit in my view it is only a matter of time before a causal link is established between the radiation associated with mobile phone technology and adverse health effects. Moreover, it is true to say that government policy and legislation in respect of mast development is very heavily weighted in favour of the operators and against the tenets of local democracy. That said, and despite the difficulties face by communities, there are several material planning considerations which can, and should, be deployed against applications to site mobile phone installations insensitively.

I will send a response based on the above text to the Argus.

Imagine being shoved inside a small closet with barely enough room to move. Your feet begin to ache from the hard floor so you contort your body just enough to sit down. But after a while, this position offers no more comfort and you struggle to stand up again. The lack of room to walk or even turn around starts to atrophy your muscles, and festering sores on your feet make every movement agony. Now imagine spending six years like this-and you'll begin to understand what life is like for nearly 6 million pregnant or nursing pigs in the United States.

"Gestation crates” are miserably uncomfortable concrete-floored stalls so small that pigs inside them can’t even turn around. Although the scientific evidence condemning them as physically and mentally torturous for mother pigs is overwhelming and uncontested among scientists and veterinarians with animal welfare as their primary concern, the AVMA continues to support them. Sows in crates are forced into a constant cycle of pregnancy and birth and are never allowed to breathe fresh air, feel the sunshine on their backs, or know a moment’s joy or contentment.

In addition to torturing these intelligent animals into complete psychosis, the crates cause the sows’ bones and muscles to atrophy, and the pigs develop painful sores and lesions. Most of them are lame and very sick by the time they’re slaughtered. According to industry reports, more than 400,000 are crippled by the time they arrive at the slaughterhouse.

Clearly the AVMA would not remain silent were dogs so horribly abused, but pigs are smarter than dogs and just as sensitive and worthy of the AVMA’s concern. Unfortunately, pigs have anti-animal representatives in positions of power at the AVMA. The veterinarian who proposed the endorsement for gestation crates, Dr. David Madsen, is the AVMA delegate from the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, and he actually admitted in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association that the resolution was a response to animal rights groups’ objections to the use of gestation stalls.

Mystery at Marc-Seignobos school

This is translated from the french newspaper items on Next-up website combined with report sent to me by Next-up representative who confirmed the translation.

Iris Atzmon.

France, Chabeuil, Marc-Seignobos school: On the 1st of June, firefighters arrived to evacuate 800 pupils from the classes. More than 50 pupils complained on headaches, stomach pains, vision problems. Other 17 were taken to hospital to go through medical examinations and were released to their homes on the same day. The police came and also the mayor - and reassured the worried parents that everything was OK. In two letters that were sent to the parents and to the teachers, the principal informed that the examinations of water and air were "negative", and that the bad feeling of the pupils "had no character of gravity". The principal also asked the teachers to dedicate several minutes in order to "de-dramatize" the situation and added that it seemed that "the phenomenon had psycholoigical origines". "I didn't see the concerned pupils and so it's difficult to confirm but it's true that the reactions of collective fear, which were not correctly valued for long time, exist. It's possible to help a series of brutal and short anxiety attacks. The symptoms- migranes, spams, lost of consciousness...correspond to what was described to me about these students" explains Dr, Patricia Chevalier, a psychiatrist of children.

Next-up organization arrvied at the school and found that the school is exactly in the axis of the radiation beam from the cellular base station placed 200 meters from the school. Next-up made measurements in the school and found that on the same floor and in the rooms of the classes where the complaints came from - the electromagnetic fields were 1.1- 1.4 V/m. Next- Up representative reports, that the most difficult thing is to get information about the investigations of the health authorities and the police. Next-up is going to demand with the parents that investigations will be done about the base station of Orange until they know wether there had been or not modifications of radiation emited on the 31/5/2006 . For example, wether the companies had done experiements with UMTS at the same time. In the first floor, the point where there was maximum radiation, was exactly in the same rooms of classes where the pupils complained about the most of the symptoms. Next up and the parents of the pupils of Seignobos school, think that the collective psychological explanation is impossible. According to the data arrived to Next up, only pupils on the same floor (of the radiation beam) had symptoms (the staff on the ground floor had no symptoms). Around 300 pupils are on the same floor, many complained "suddenly" on headaches. There was a total of 93 faints according to Next-up. They are going to follow up this subject which is going to be reoprted this week also in the national news and add that "it is not food poisoning, not gas, not the ground, not collective psychology of a serious accident, not the sun etc..."

Dear All

I've had a look at this and tried to decipher what it is saying. This is possibly something new.

53 children were suddenly taken ill in a school with violent headaches, sickness and eye problems.

The school was evacuated.

A phone mast expert measured the radiation in the school the next day and found it was in the main beam from a mast. However the levels being about 1v/m couldn't produce such a violent reaction (although these levels are way too high in terms of long term effects) so as far as I understand he is postulating that the power must have been turned up suddenly towards 10 v/m which would produce these violent effects.

They have asked why this happened and if Orange can redirect the beam away from the school. Note that all these levels are still way below 'guidelines'!

http://www.next-up.org/divers/images_x44.php

I have often wondered if there is a 'safety' mechanism on the antennae whereby they cannot 'accidently' be turned up above a certain point and if so what that point is?

If true that in this case the radiation levels were increased the only 3 reason I can think of are

a a mistake
b on purpose to see what the effects would be
c to obtain more coverage? (is this possible?)

What does this mean for all our existing masts?

Sarah

I found this old article. Does anyone know if this is still the case that the above mentioned authorities have still got a ban on masts on schools?

Thanks

sarah

United Kingdom (1999)

According to an article in the Sunday Mirror United Kingdom Education chiefs are banning mobile phone masts from schools amid growing fars of a link between low-level radiation and cancer. A quarter of 400 schools approached recently have turned down offers of up to £10,000 to have the masts put up in their grounds

New research has shown a possible link between low- level radiation from masts and childhood leukaemia, cancer and brain disorders. Now some education authorities are adopting a safety-first approach.

Mast bans have been imposed in Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, Warwickshire, Norfolk, Essex, West Sussex, Hampshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. In Lincolnshire and Manchester schools are advised not to instal them. Of the 400 school masts erected already, many may not have their leases renewed. A spokeswoman for the Local Government Association said: "This is an issue we are taking extremely seriously."

Well this is interesting, the England's Parliamentary Party. Does anyone know anything about them?

Legal warning over phone mast decisions

Jun 2 2006

Chester Chronicle

A POLITICAL group has warned councillors they could be indicted for corporate manslaughter.

England's Parliamentary Party (EPP) collaborated with a pressure group called Masts Away from Schools Homes and Hospitals (MASHH), in a letter to the leader of Chester City Council, Paul Roberts (Lib Dem, Farndon).

The correspondence said if anyone was found to have been killed by radiation from a phone mast, criminal charges could be brought.

It said: 'England's Parliamentary Party is totally opposed to the location of these masts in populated areas and, hereby, formally puts you on notice that you may, as part of the decision-making process, be indicted for corporate manslaughter should a fatality occur resulting from illness deemed to be attributable to the emissions from these masts.

'You owe a duty of care to the people within the boundaries of this council and your decisions with regard to the location of telecommunications masts could breach that duty of care.

'As a result of that breach, should it cause a person's death, the law of negligence must be applied; if so, whether that breach of duty is so bad as to amount, when viewed objectively, to gross negligence, it will warrant a criminal conviction.'

Malcolm Harle, of MASHH, said his group was formed after residents fought against the siting of a mast in Westminster Park, close to a nursery.

He said: 'We are very concerned with the health implications but the Government at national and local level aren't listening. We realised pretty early on we needed political help.'

Cllr Roberts said: 'They are making some disgraceful threats without a shred of legal justification. In any planning decision, we listen to the best advice from Government and other professionals and we will always follow that advice.'

--------

MASHH see http://www.mashh.com

In a toxicological sense the environmental pollution by electromagnetic fields is cause (trigger and or part of chains of events) of damage to health. The chains of events would not happen if the link caused directly and or indirectly by the effects of the electromagnetic fields to the human being as a whole would lack. The health damage can be reversible (example: headache from a mobile phone) and irreversible (example: changes of DNA) can lead to or contribute to death (examples: Ena Bambrough in Newcastle (2001), suicides (known to have happened in France), cancer (changes of DNA)). In these cases indeed the operators of wireless systems, the owners of the systems, the owners of premises, the authorities are responsible. They consciously have added to the environmental pollution by electromagnetic fields, causing the link. They had information and could have decided to prevent the pollution by choosing the alternative of a wired system.

Datum: Do, 29.06.2006, 11:16

Residents mobilise against mobiles

Traffic on the Cavehill Road was brought to a standstill during a protest by angry families against the proposed building of a mobile phone mast at the junction of the North Circular Road.

Over 100 people held the demonstration after test holes were seen being drilled on the roadside, indicating that the mobile phone company ‘3’ were renewing interest in the site.

Four years ago local people got together and formed the Cavehill Residents Action Group (CRAG) to object to a planning application from the telecommunications company ‘3’ (then known as 3G) for a 15-foot mast and cabinet. The residents maintained there was no evidence that the equipment was safe, a claim disputed by the phone company. CRAG then sought a high court injunction after the planning application was approved but this move also failed.

Despite getting the go ahead however, no more work was carried out by the phone company.

But the Planning Service have now confirmed that inquiries have been made by an agent for ‘3’ to establish if the company now needs any further planning permission to erect a mast. Briege O’Hare of CRAG this week said residents are as determined as ever to prevent any future mast being built.

“Based on government reports there is still not enough evidence to show that mobile phone masts are safe and until we have a better idea of the long term risks associated with these things – especially on children – we will be fighting to prevent them being built in areas like this. This campaign will be a success because we will not stop no matter what happens. CRAG is willing to help other groups who are fighting against these masts.”

She said more care should be put into the decisions as to where masts are built.

“People do need mobile phones but they also need to know they are safe. We want exclusions zones set up like down south and in Scotland where masts are not allowed to be built until they can prove they are safe.”

Backing the residents in their campaign and taking part in the protest was Sinn Féin councillor Tierna Cunningham, who said the people of the Cavehill Road had her party’s full support in their fight.

“I pledge my support and the support of Sinn Féin to this campaign because we oppose the building of these masts in residential areas. Health is at the forefront of this campaign and we are totally opposed to the building of this mast beside schools and shops.

“I will be lobbying the Council for the setting up of exclusion zones. There are already four masts in this area and we do not need or want any more. This is only the start of the campaign but we are determined to make sure it will be successful,” she said.

A spokesman for the Planning Service confirmed that permission had been granted for a mast on the site under the now defunct ‘prior approval’ scheme. But he said officials were currently investigating whether a new planning application was required because the agent dealing for ‘3’ requested moving the mast by 60 cm to avoid pipes that have recently been laid. “The planning service has recently received correspondence from the agent advising that the mast needs to be moved by approx 60cms and seeking clarification whether or not a planning application is required. The matter is currently under consideration.”

No one from the phone company was available for comment.

Muskogee, Oklahoma Grand Jury Impeachment

From: Jane Swartley
Date: Mon May 29, 2006 11:38am(PDT)
Subject: Muskogee impeachment Grand Jury

Muskogee, Oklahoma Grand Jury Impeachment News

Over the next few weeks, our goal is to not only get the Muskogee Grand Jury Impanelment petition signed but also to promote this countermovement in the major media and political circles of our country and the world.

There is only one way to stop the Bush-Cheney movement cold in its tracks, and that is by influencing public opinion and applying pressure. It is not unnoticed by us that we have several months before the off-year congressional elections and this target is as important as the main goal. We have had to take action as a population because the judicial and congressional elements in our government have been ineffective -- and, worse, seem to be part of this movement to seize the country into control by the powerful, and to h... with the people.

It must be stopped, and we can do it. Go here and read; and please help us in this countermovement.

http://www.bushbusiness.com/impeachment%20news.htm

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?gjprobe

More about the Muskogee Grand Jury proposal:
(posted in numerous Oklahoma newspapers last week)

As you probably know, only two states in the union have a constitutional provision allowing empanelment of a grand jury on the strength of the requisite number of petition signatories from the registered voters in a given county of the respective state.

One of these states is New Mexico; the other happens to be your state, Oklahoma.

Between now and the November 2006 election cycle, you and a handful of volunteer assistants have the opportunity to gather the several hundred signatures needed for presentment to the selected court-of-record there in your county -- a court that would have no recourse but to empanel the sought-for state grand jury to investigate, and report upon, the alleged criminal activity of Bush-Cheney (e.g., lying to the public re Iraqnam, and waging warrantless wiretapping of U. S. citizens on American soil).

The resulting report could serve as an impetus for Congress to expedite its oversight power and investigatory role into how (and why) the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld regime has undermined the governmental security and constitutional protections afforded Oklahomans and all other Americans.

Of course, the empaneled grand jury would have no authority to subpoena relevant testimony or other evidence from federal officials, but it could (and should) INVITE formal submission of such evidence. Presumably, this call for evidence would smoke out some additional whistleblowers as to official, presidential wrongdoing -- and facilitate "leakage" of incriminating, verifiable documentation.

As an Oklahoman empowered by your state's constitution, you occupy a potential, historic turning point in our nation's growing demand for accountability on the part of Bush-Cheney. If you, and/or someone you know, can accept this challenge, please let me know whether you'd like for me to draft the proposed petition-for-empanelment.

As I await your response, by all means feel free to e-circulate and Internet-post the contents of this letter. Who knows: maybe someone in New Mexico might like to pursue this proposal in his/her county.

Petition to stop the quarrying of the Thornborough Henges Complex

A message from Eleanor

DEAR FRIENDS

PLEASE SIGN AND PLEASE FORWARD TO AS MANY FRIENDS AS YOU CAN - PLEASE LET THESE COUNCILLORS KNOW THAT THERE IS AN INTEREST IN THIS SITE ALL OVER THE WORLD - IT IS AN INTERNATIONAL HERITAGE SITE! TO DIG IT UP FOR GRAVEL WOULD BE A SCANDAL!

Original Message

Dear Friend

For four years I have been striving to stop international mining conglomerate Anglo American Plc from quarrying the largest prehistoric religious site in Britain.

I have recently had a small success, as the application for further quarrying was rejected, but the quarrying continues and I'm informed that the UK planning system will almost certainly allow the quarry to expand on appeal.

Without government intervention this supremely important site, only six miles from my house will suffer further damage simply for gravel that can be easily obtained elsewhere.

If you have not already done so, please sign my petition, regardless of where you live.

Thanks

George

Petition to stop the quarrying of the Thornborough Complex.

In the UK, the largest prehistoric religious site, the Thornborough Henges Complex, is being quarried for gravel by Tarmac Ltd. The company is part of the massive Anglo American Corporation, and are not only destroying one of Britain’s most important ancient sites, but also they are using there financial muscle to make it appear to the general public that this is of benefit to British heritage!

Please help us try to stop this, Thornborough is not the only important ancient site Tarmac are quarrying, lets us send a clear message to the British government that this must stop.

Note: Two versions of the same petition – in case you have trouble loading one.

Mehrfachverwendung von Einwegartikeln bei Operationen

Sehr geehrte Frau Bundesministerin Schmidt,

Homeless Youth Initiative

A message from Eleanor

This petition sums up the needs of the young homeless so well! Please sign to urge Congress to address these needs. Every young person deserves the chance of a decent life. Please forward if you possibly can!

Eleanor

Homeless Youth Initiative Congress should take the following actions related to runaway and homeless youth:

Congress and the Executive Branch should take the following steps to ensure an appropriate response to the needs of runaway and homeless youth:

Expand funding for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act, which establishes three national programs:

The Basic Center Program which provides temporary shelter for youth in crisis and counseling for those youths and their families.

The Transitional Living Program which assists older homeless youth to move successfully toward independence.

The Street Outreach Program which connects youth on the streets to services and prevents sexual abuse and exploitation of these youths.

Ensure that services, supports and opportunities for young people are part of the local continuum of care and efforts.

Enhance funding for the Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program and enforce the requirement that all barriers to public school enrollment, attendance and success of homeless children and youth are eliminated.

Ensure that, for short periods of time, alternatives to mainstreaming are available to homeless youth under the Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program, to provide supplementary services to meet the unique needs of these youth.

Provide federal leadership to encourage cooperation at all levels of government and to involve leaders in state and local government and nonprofit organizations to better address the problems of runaway and homeless youth.

Provide federal support for aggressive campaigns and increased coordination to prevent child abuse and neglect, and provide early, effective intervention.

Improve homeless youths' access to health care, education, job training programs, and national service.

Support legislation for better low-income housing options and improved access to housing programs for young adults, including Section 8 vouchers for youth receiving services or graduating from transitional living programs or aging out of the foster care system.

Land Acquisition Program Suffers in House, Next Chance: Senate Action

Take Action

Despite the tens of thousands of phone calls and emails that WildAlert subscribers made to Congress last month, the House made deep cuts in the Land and Water Conservation and Forest Legacy Programs, both key to protecting land at risk of development. The Interior Department also suffered deep cuts to its programs.

The Senate is expected to take up this measure soon. Even if you have already written to your Senators, we need you to contact them before this important vote. Please click here to tell your Senators to provide adequate funding for land acquisition projects in all states.

Oil, if found in the Arctic Refuge, would irreparably scar the Refuge's spectacular coastal plain

On the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, caribou calves prance in the summer sunlight just as they have done for thousands of years. Meanwhile, in Washington, politicians dance around the issue of America's energy security as they have for what seems an eternity.

Last Thursday the House voted 225-201 to open the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling. This was actually the strongest pro-Refuge showing in recent years, but was little more than a political stunt to give the impression that Congress is actually "doing something" about rising energy costs. Of course we all know that oil, if found in the Arctic Refuge, would do next to nothing to reduce our costs at the pump but would irreparably scar the Refuge's spectacular coastal plain.

Tell the Forest Service the Boise River is more precious than gold

USFS is considering Canadian mining company's proposal that threatens
the Boise River with a cyanide-leach open-pit gold mine

Atlanta Gold, a Canadian mining company, wants to build an open-pit cyanide heap-leach gold mine sixty miles northeast of Boise, Idaho's capital city. The mine would be in the headwaters of the Boise River and threatens Boise's drinking water supply, as well as fish, wildlife, and public health and safety.

Please take action.
http://tinyurl.com/lfeza

Atlanta Gold's mine proposal would:

* blast two giant open pits blasted into the mountains
* remove over 1,000 feet of mountain
* dump more than 25 million tons of arsenic-containing mine waste into a valley above the mine
* truck dangerous, toxic chemicals on narrow, unpaved, riverside roads including -- 1.4 million pounds of sodium cyanide, 2 million pounds of ammonium nitrate, 2.3 million gallons of diesel fuel

A cyanide or disel fuel spill could pollute the Boise River and reservoirs where much of the areas drinking and irrigation water comes from. Over 20% of Boise's drinking water comes from the Boise River.

What You Can Do:
Please tell the U.S. Forest Service to protect the Boise River!
http://tinyurl.com/lfeza
Please act by June 9th. Tell the USFS that the Boise River is more precious than gold.

Sincerely,

Alan Septoff

Claverhouse mast given go-ahead

02 June 2006

The Scottish Executive has once again overruled councillors to allow a mobile phone mast to be put up in Dundee, writes Grant Smith.
Vodafone will now be able to expand its 3G network with a 13.5m mast and antennas at Forfar Road, next to the Claverhouse West industrial estate.

It has become almost routine for phone companies to successfully appeal against the refusal of planning permission, with only one case out of nine being rejected by the Executive’s inquiry reporters unit during 2005/06.

In this instance, the ruling reverses a 15 to 10 vote by councillors that the mast would result in “visual clutter” because there were already another two masts a short distance away.

There had also been a petition with 116 signatures and a letter of objection from the Mill O’ Mains residents’ association, which raised health concerns about the possible effect of emissions on pupils at a nearby primary school.

In their appeal, Vodafone argued that the telephone pole-like mast would be designed and positioned as sensitively as possible to minimise its visual impact.

Sharing one of the existing mast sites was not a good option because a taller, thicker pole would have to be used to accommodate the extra antennas.

In his judgement, Executive reporter Ron Jackson noted that Vodafone was intending to put up a fence around the mast’s base station and plant trees to provide screening.

There were already several street lighting columns, large road signs and a CCTV camera pole in the area and one more mast would make little difference.

He said, “I consider that it would not be visually intrusive in that particular urban location.

“It would simply appear as another pole, of which there are many at that location.”

Mr Jackson rejected the residents’ association concerns about emissions, saying he had found nothing to substantiate them. In any case, the Executive had ruled that emissions need not be taken into account when deciding on planning applications.

Claverhouse councillor Andy Dawson said he was “sorely disappointed” by the outcome of the appeal, which he felt was undermining the role of elected members.

“We have people coming into the town and overturning our decisions when we have the local knowledge. This wasn’t the first time and I don’t think it will be the last.”

Only Qwest refused, though Verizon and BellSouth now claim 'inaccuracies' in reports that they helped the Feds spy on us. Whether you called from your home, cell, or office phone, whether you dialed next door, Netcong, or the Netherlands, the NSA apparently knows what number was dialed and the duration of the call. These records don't include names or street addresses, but -- comforting thought -- the government could match that information with the call-details any time it pleases. Beware of oil pundits

Free Market News Network
by Alvaro Vargas Llosa

06/01/06

Those who espouse clever government-led solutions to high oil prices should bear in mind that new discoveries have outpaced consumption for a number of years, but too much bureaucratic interference has hampered supply. Restrictions on building new refineries and pipelines in the U.S. have kept prices up and increased America's dependence on foreign energy. Half of Europe's motorists already use diesel fuel, but the lack of refining capacity to turn heavy crude into diesel has made the rest of the world rely a lot more on light crude, pushing up its price. And, of course, supply would be higher if almost 80 percent of oil reserves did not belong to incompetent government-owned companies around the world, such as in Russia, Sudan and Nigeria. Not to mention that huge tariffs on imports of Brazilian sugar cane have hampered the development of ethanol in the U.S. (Brazil's use of ethanol as an energy source has been a huge success.) Why make matters worse by meddling further?

In the election of 1800, Thomas Jefferson became president and swept his party into power due, in part, to the country’s overwhelming opposition to the Sedition Act of 1798. This act was a deliberate attempt by the Federalists in power to silence their political opponents. The McCain-Feingold campaign-finance law enacted in 2002 is an equally dangerous modern-day assault on the First Amendment. It could more accurately be called the McCain-Feingold censorship law because it stifles political speech, protects incumbent politicians and consolidates power in Washington. Phone mast gets a poor reception

RESIDENTS in South Shore are fighting moves to put a mobile phone mast near a children's playground.

A planning application has been lodged with Blackpool Council to mount a six metre mast close to Highfield Road Park.

Communications company Orange wants to put the antennae, along with a satellite dish and six equipment cupboards, on top of Moulton Printers on Highfield Road.

But neighbours say that while the safety of masts is still uncertain they should not be sited in residential areas.

They are now collecting signatures on a petition and are determined to block the plans.

Peter Brown, 51, of Highfield Road said: "There are just too many unanswered questions about these masts. We are not saying they are definitely dangerous, we are just saying that until people can tell us they are definitely not dangerous, they shouldn't be putting them in densely populated areas like this where it is next to a children's playground, a nursery and hundreds of homes."

Annie Carr, who lives opposite the proposed site, has even vowed to picket the printing firm if councillors approve the scheme.

The 57-year-old said: "It is a case of better safer than sorry. While there is any doubt about dangerous radiation we don't want one here.

"We have delivered petitions to most of the shops on Highfield Road and we want as many people as possible to sign them so we can show the council how much opposition there is to the mast.

"I have been looking into concerns about mobile phone masts and it is frightening.

"I know some people argue there are no dangers associated with them but then again they said there was no problem with thalidomide, asbestos and BSE."

The group is supported by Highfield ward councillor, Susan Fowler.
She said: "Until it is categorically proven they pose no threat they should not be put in built up areas.

"Back in November 2000 people power successfully saw off plans to put a similar mast in Fishers Field.

"Hopefully, we can do that again."

Geoff Williams, North West co-ordinator of anti-antennae campaign group, Mast Sanity, believes mobile phone masts are linked to cases cancer, leukaemia and brain tumours.

He said: "I have lived under the shadow of a mast for years and it has devastated the health of my family.

"Radiation can have frightening implications for people's health. There have been clusters of cancer cases near where I live."

The planning application was submitted to council planners on May 18 and the consultation period expires on June 15.

A Gazette investigation last year found that thousands of Blackpool children were playing in the shadow of huge mobile phone masts.

It revealed that around one in four of the resort's schools were within 100m of an antennae.

Among them were St Cuthbert's in Lightwood Avenue, South Shore, and Palatine High School in St Annes Road, South Shore.

The UK has over 45,000 masts used to provide coverage for 55 million mobile phone subscribers in the UK.

No-one from Orange was available for comment.

What You Can Do for Peace Next Wednesday

Demand an Open Debate on Iraq: National Call-In Day June 7 Call your Representative 202-224-3121 An open debate on Iraq is overdue!

Americans want their sons and daughters home. Children want their mothers and fathers home. The Iraqis want their nation back. Most of the troops think they should leave in the next six months. These are the compelling majority opinions that must be addressed. Facing this is a moral and non-partisan challenge.

But, after more than three years, $300 billion, and the death of over one hundred thousand Iraqis and nearly 2,500 American soldiers, Congress still refuses to debate real alternatives to the President's stay-the-course policy. It is a policy that over 80% of Iraqis, more than 70% of U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq and a majority of Americans say is a failure.

As a people who seek peace and justice, we have a unique opportunity to demand that Congress stop passing the buck. So far, 122 members of the House of Representatives have signed a 'discharge petition' calling for immediate debate and consideration of ALL alternatives to the policy of open-ended occupation of Iraq. All we need is 96 more members to sign the petition for debate to begin. We need your help!

Call your U.S. Representative on June 7th. Ask your Representative to sign H.Res. 543 OR thank them if they have already signed and ask them to ask a colleague to sign H.Res. 543.

Here are lists of those who have and have not signed: http://www.openiraqdebate.com/inner/roll-call.html

The pressure we are applying is already having an impact. There have been news reports that some Republican members of Congress, hoping to dodge a real discussion about Iraq, will offer a tightly-controlled debate framed by supporters of the war. This alternative is clearly an election-year effort to sell the war to the public rather than address the failed policy and the need to bring the troops home. This alternative won't allow members who oppose the war to offer plans to bring the occupation to an end.

Tell your Congress Member that you demand to see a debate with an "open rule," meaning that any amendments can be introduced, debated, and voted on. The surest route to that debate is for them to sign the discharge petition and ask their colleagues to do the same.

Call 202-224-3121 and give the operator your Representative's name, or go to power search on Congress for the local district office: http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/powersearch.htm

Save the whales by not buying Japanese

The Monitor's View http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0602/p08s02-comv.html

Japan's export titans often get their way with their government. Right now they want senior politicians to end their controversial visits to a Tokyo war memorial that also honors war criminals - the visits are bad for business in China. But they should add this request: Don't overturn a ban on commercial whaling.

Japan has spent heavily to influence poor countries that are members of the International Whaling Commission (IWC). It just announced a fresh $410 million aid package to South Pacific nations. Its aim is to reverse a 1986 IWC ban that has allowed many whale species to begin a long, slow recovery. In mid-June, the 66 nations of the regulatory body will gather, and Japan is expected to succeed in winning the votes of many cash-poor IWC members. Overturning the ban requires a 75 percent vote, but Japan may first secure a 51 percent vote to conduct balloting in secret.

The prospect of the IWC allowing the slaughter of whale species not fully recovered has yet to raise much fuss in many antiwhaling nations. But it should, given the importance of whales in the health of oceans.

If the UN General Assembly or the US does not act soon, then a consumer boycott of Japanese products is needed. That will catch the attention of Japanese corporate leaders, who can then pressure politicians leading the pro-whaling campaign.

These politicians regard the ban as Western "culinary imperialism" aimed at Japan's tradition of eating whale meat. But the issue is conservation, not culture, and the Japanese data and arguments that many whale species are fully revived should remain suspect, and certainly not acted on in a secret IWC ballot.

It's not even clear if the Japanese people want to consume whale meat in large quantities. Less than 1 percent now eat the meat that is sold from the more than 1,000 whales Japan catches annually "for scientific research" (allowed under IWC rules). Some of the meat has ended up simply as doggie treats.

Emotions either against or in favor of whaling are usually strong. Many Japanese see hypocrisy in those who argue against the killing of such intelligent animals, but who also eat lamb or pig. Environmentalists see Japan as little concerned about nature's well-being beyond its shores. And the resurgence of nationalism in Japan - something its business chiefs sometimes oppose - may be behind this pro-whaling initiative.

Persuasion through facts and logic about the health of whale stocks are unlikely to prevail at the IWC, given Japan's long determination to overturn the ban for cultural reasons and its monied clout over weak members.

Some antiwhaling groups want the US to withhold support for a permanent Japanese seat on the UN Security Council. But that tactic is meaningless, given China's stance against Japan obtaining a seat.

Barring quick US or UN action, a temporary consumer boycott of Japanese products would carry the most certainty of saving the ban.

Forcing Japan to back down isn't a pleasant prospect. But neither is the risk of some whale species going extinct.

One side has to give, and for Japan, it's the easier give.

Phone mast anger

By Tamlyn Jones

Jun 2, 2006

A sports ground used by children could soon be housing a 12-metre high mobile phone mast in a "black-hole" area for coverage. Residents have already voiced their opposition to the scheme.

Telecommunications firm O2, wants to build the tower at Little Stoke Cricket Club, near Stone, as they seek to increase their 3G coverage in the area and boost the service to customers using the West Coast Mainline train service.

Little Stoke runs a variety of teams in local leagues, some as young as under 11.

O2 warned this week that if councillors follow officers' recommendations to refuse permission for the mast, then the company would continue to push for other sites nearby.

Regional spokesman for O2 James Stevenson, said: "That's a good place we are trying to keep the network going but it is a bit of a black hole.

"We spoke to the planners about this one they said they could not see any difficulties with the site we had picked.

"It is surprising that they have come back and said they don't want it.

"Even if this is refused we will continue to look in this area."

An amended plan is also due to be submitted by O2 which would see the mast increased by 50cms to account for signal disruption by nearby trees.

The application has sparked anger among residents nearly 60 people have lodged objections with Stafford Borough Council.

One of the residents even enlisted the professional expertise of a solicitor.

Residents said the mast, in Uttoxeter Road, would be visually intrusive, too close to properties and expressed concerns at the cricket club's involvement.

Mr Stevenson added: "We understand how people feel about it.

"We would come and see them (the residents ) if they wanted.

"It is an area we have got to get up and running.

"The network up there is not robust enough at the moment."

Two other nearby sites had been considered High Street and Stone Cricket Club but Little Stoke was considered the best by O2.

The mast would be sited on a rise which has prevented an application being submitted for a 15m tower further towards Stone.

In deciding to recommend refusal, planning officers said there was not enough evidence that the required coverage could not be achieved in a less visually intrusive manner.

Officers also claimed that the mast would be harmful to the amenities of the surrounding area.

The application will be discussed next Wednesday (June 7) by Stafford Borough Council's planning committee.

Don't Spy On Me

Government assaults on privacy are increasing all around us, even as the people's ability to speak without fear of reprisal is dwindling. Still, most of us have never found ourselves in a direct confrontation with the government over whether to remain silent or speak out for our beliefs.

Barbara Bailey, Peter Chase, George Christian and Janet Nocek -- four librarians who were gagged by the FBI -- have faced our government's abuses of power in a deeply personal way. You and I can only hope that we would respond with the courage and commitment to principle that they demonstrated.

This week, these Connecticut librarians were finally able to speak publicly about their months-long battle against secret government demands for their patrons' library records. At great personal risk, they fought back against a government intent on using the Patriot Act to seize library records without a legal order and to bar them from telling anyone what was happening.

These courageous Americans stood up for their patrons' rights and for the rights of every library user in America - and they refused to flinch. Everyone who cares about the state of freedom and privacy in our country today owes them a debt of gratitude.

More importantly, we owe it to them to join the fight and stand up to the government's abuse of power in whatever way we can. You can do your part today by joining in the nationwide consumer campaign to stop illegal NSA spying. We need your help holding our phone companies and state and federal regulators to the same fundamental American principles upheld by our four Connecticut librarians.

Act now to stop phone companies from abusing your privacy.
http://action.aclu.org/site/R?i=AuCmVNE2I4YB4cGsFf1sZQ..

We've seen, time and time again, how intent the government is on invading our privacy from the books we read to the phone calls we make. And we know that neither timid politicians nor quick-to-cooperate companies can be counted on to defend our privacy.

The story of these patriotic librarians reminds us all that there is a limit to how much power we should relinquish without protest or action.

The government gagged them by claiming that their story, told in public, would jeopardize national security. This administration has repeatedly abused this claim to silence its critics and conceal extreme practices they know Americans do not support.

Because when the people can see the truth, they speak out. The Bush administration may not want to hear the growing outcry against their actions. But the ACLU, our clients and our supporters will not stop speaking out until the abuses of power come to an end.

Since the news of possible cooperation between phone companies and the NSA in illegal spying operations surfaced, nearly 60,000 Americans have added their names to our demand to the Federal Communications Commission and state agencies with the authority to regulate the phone companies.

We can't stand idly by while corporations, federal regulators and even our elected leaders fail to champion our rights or uphold our basic system of checks and balances. The power to right these wrongs ultimately resides in the hands of the American people.

It's up to us. That's why I'm urging you to honor the courage of these librarians by making this the moment that you speak out. Remind regulators of their duty to investigate what may be the most massive abuse of customer privacy in American history.

Act now to stop phone companies from abusing your privacy.
http://action.aclu.org/site/R?i=6o2rhADb1Wob54-UWHMS6Q..

Right now, it is absolutely essential that we challenge phone companies that, with stunning eagerness, have been swift to join the government in violating your and my freedom. Please take action today.
