Foreign Scholars Denied Visas

Why have prominent foreign scholars had their visas to speak or teach in this country denied or revoked? Many, including the academic institutions who invited them, are baffled. Some suspect the application of Section 411 of the Patriot Act, which excludes foreigners who "endorse or espouse terrorist activity."

Congress Wants to End Universality of the Internet

Congress wants to change the Internet, and major news media have not actively pursued the story. The House and Senate Commerce Committees are promoting new rules governing the manner by which most Americans receive the Web. Congressional passage of new rules is widely anticipated, as is President Bush's signature. Once this happens, the Internet will go out of the hands of the people and into the pockets of big business.

The Republican Agenda: Tax Cuts for Rich

"The bill, which was passed yesterday by the House and is expected to clear the Senate as early as today, has two main provisions. The first, and dearest to the hearts of President Bush and his allies in Congress, is an extension of the temporary low tax rates on investment income. The top 10 percent of income earners will get almost all of the benefits, and everyone else will get crumbs," according to the New York Times.

Google and Microsoft Aiding China's Repressive Policies

Thank you for your recent action to demand the immediate release of Shi Tao and the end of censorship by the US Internet giant, Yahoo. Faced with growing public pressure, Yahoo has heard our call - however we still have a long road ahead to ensure that Yahoo fully addresses our demands.

Unfortunately, other US Internet companies like Google and Microsoft have also been assisting the repressive Chinese Government in its effort to limit the rights of their citizens. Amnesty International is concerned about the ways these companies are aiding violations of freedom to information and expression, by actively censoring content on topics such as human rights, political reform, Tiananmen Square and democracy, among others.

Today is Google's annual shareholder meeting and Tony Cruz, AIUSA's Corporate Action Network Coordinator for California, will be there to let the company know that Amnesty International will not stand by and let them violate human rights. Today also marks the start of a global call to action - across the world we are asking concerned citizens and Internet users to send an urgent message, by email, fax, or phone, to demand an end to these abuses.

Take action online! Visit our internet censorship action page http://www.amnestyusa.org/business/takeaction.html to get the full story about what Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are doing in China and find out why their claim that they are only following the law is a weak excuse for abusing human rights in pursuit of profit.

There are several ways you can act. Simply click to email our prepared online letter, or print off a copy and fax it to the number provided. Companies will often work fast to block mass emails from organizations like Amnesty, so it's important to try a variety of avenues. If you are a customer of Google or Microsoft, we recommend also contacting their user support lines, or filling out a complaint form through their website. All of the information you need to do this can be found on our action page.

Save Primates from vivisection

A message from Eleanor

Primate experimentation in the United States is out of control. In the last ten years the number of primate experiments funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has increased by 76%. Statistics based on data published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveal that primate experimentation in the U.S. has reached an all time high with over 120,000 of our closest relatives suffering and dying in laboratories during the last two years.

Repetition is rampant among NIH-funded projects. Currently 170 National Institutes of Health projects study neural information processing in macaque monkeys. 75 grants fund examinations of cocaine in primates. 70 experiments examine vision in macaque monkeys. These experiments continue for decades wasting millions of tax dollars and victimizing primates for an entire lifetime.

We must all continue to work together to insure continued progress for animals in laboratories.

There are over two hundred primate laboratories in the U.S. If we are to change the fate of primates within these many facilities we will need the support of activists across the United States. Please contact us ASAP to get involved in this crucial campaign EPE@etaep.org .

EURO-MP INTERVENES IN HAMPSHIRE PHONE MAST ROW

NEWS RELEASE From the office of the South-East England's Green MEP Caroline Lucas

May 11th, 2006

HAMPSHIRE'S

Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas has called on Test Valley Council to block plans to build a ten-metre mobile 'phone mast in a residential area in Chandler's Ford.

Dr Lucas said the proposed mast, which T-Mobile wants to build at Knightwood Road - within 300 metres of 100 homes - could pose dangers for residents' health and should not be sited in such a highly-populated area.

"Research conducted on behalf of the European Parliament has demonstrated that safety guidelines governing the exposure of the public to radiation from mobile 'phone base stations are inadequate," said Dr Lucas.

"In the face of real health risks we should adopt the precautionary principle and stop allowing masts to be built at sites - such as Knightwood Road - which are close to built-up residential areas."

Current Government guidelines allowing masts to be built near homes are based on incomplete research, according to a report by Warwick University Professor Gerard Hyland and commissioned by Dr Lucas for the European Parliament.

By measuring the effects of radiation intensity only - and not the frequency of microwave pulses - the research on which the guidelines are based fails to account for unexplained levels of ill-health, including cancers, in those living in proximity to the masts.

"I hope Test Valley planners will protect local residents by rejecting this application," added Dr Lucas.

"But the planning laws make it very difficult for local authorities to take risks to human health into account when deciding whether to give 'phone operators permission to erect masts - and the Government must review the legislation and day-today guidance to require local councils to adopt the precautionary principle when considering the siting of mobile 'phone masts."

Nuke Nightmare: Bush's Drive to Armageddon

Call for Worldwide June 6, 2006 "NO ARMAGEDDON FOR BUSH" Rallies

Members of the Washington, DC Antiwar Network http://dawndc.net encourage groups worldwide to join us in holding NO ARMAGEDDON FOR BUSH rallies on June 6, 2006 (6/6/6). Publicity is assured because "666" is the "Mark of the Beast," the biblical evil one who brings about Armageddon. Media already have begun noting both the humorous and the serious aspects of this, including law enforcement concerns about "incidents."

Given President George Bush's own Christian fundamentalist beliefs (see below) and his drive for war against "evil" Iran, including probable use of nuclear weapons, it is particularly appropriate to protest war that day. We encourage peace loving activists and people worldwide to rally in creative, fun and attention getting ways to reject the religious/political views of Bush and his cronies that they represent the "good" which must vanquish "evil" using the most deadly of military force.

DC activists already have planned a rally at 6 PM EST in front of the White House in Washington, DC. Our demands are: End U.S. Global Dominance -- World Nuclear Disarmament Now.

ADDITIONAL INFO ON GEORGE BUSH'S EVANGELICAL VIEWS AND IRAN WAR PLANS

President George Bush became a “born again” Christian under the tutelage of Billy Graham who teaches the expansion of Israel will lead to the return of the anti-Christ (666), the battle of good and evil at Israel’s valley of Armageddon and the return of Christ. Who can believe Bush’s denials he has made statements like: “'I've heard the call. I believe God wants me to run for President." and "I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn't do my job.” and "I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan. And I did, and then God would tell me, George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq…”

Journalist Seymour Hersh wrote in April 2006 that Bush believes only he has the “courage” to bomb and “save” Iran, even if that means through the "nuclear option" against its nuclear facilities. Given Iran's commitment to fighting back against any attack, either conventional or nuclear attacks quickly could spiral into world nuclear war - i.e., armageddon or apocalypse. Just imagine what Russian leaders will feel when they see aircraft and missiles, possibly nuclear armed, approaching just a few hundred miles from Russia's borders. What if lethal radiation from an attack drifts over Russia? Russia still has several thousand nuclear missiles on hair trigger alert pointed at the United States.

Foreign policy, monetary policy and gas prices

The Free Liberal
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

05/11/06

The burning issue in Washington today is high gas prices, and it won't go away anytime soon. Americans are not happy about paying $3 per gallon at the pump, and they want something done about it. But price controls won't work, and allegations of price gouging and 'windfall profits' amount to nothing more than congressional grandstanding. No government official or politician is fit to define a 'fair' price for gas or a 'fair' profit for oil companies. This is not the Soviet Union. The last thing we need is centralized government planning when it comes to our precious energy supplies...

15 mal geimpft und trotzdem Polio

(engl.)

Impfung allein gegen Polio machtlos

USA: Eltern autistischer Kinder demonstrieren gegen Quecksilber

Zusammenfassung in Deutsch: Axel Berendes

--------

Oder - für unsere amerikanischen Freunde: "He who pays the piper calls the tune."

Measles outbreak in the Ukraine, 2005-2006 An increase in the number of measles cases has been reported from Ukraine to the World Health Organization (WHO) since February 2005. By the end of February 2006, 19 673 cases of measles had been re- ported; 17 281 (88%) occurred during January and February 2006.
(...)

hier weiterlesen: http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ew/2006/060309.asp#1

- 15 % waren ungeimpft
- 16 % waren einmal geimpft
- 36 % waren zweimal geimpft

Von den Fällen ab 15 Jahre:
48 % keine Impfung oder aber Impfstatus unbekannt
22 % waren einmal geimpft
30 % waren zweimal geimpft

Von den Fällen von 1 bis 4 Jahre:
53 % waren ungeimpft
42 % waren einmal geimpft
6 % unbekannter Impfstatus

Was mir dazu auffällt:

--> 1. Die hohe Hospitalisierungsrate von 53 %. Hat es das jemals VOR der Impfära gegeben? Kann diese hohe Rate allein mit der Masernpanikmache und sich daraus ergebenden "vorsorglichen" Einlieferungen erklärt werden?

--> 2. Bei den Fällen ab 15 Jahren wird nicht zwischen "ungeimpft" und "Impfstatus unbekannt" unterschieden. Hier liegt möglicherweise der Hase im Pfeffer!

--> 3. Durchimpfungsrate und Wirkungsgrad
52 % waren mindestens einmal geimpft, 15 % ungeimpft.

Public Election Document Archive Ready for Testing

USCountVotes.net is excited to announce that we have begun testing our public election document archival system, the first step to ensuring a fair and transparent election process for every American. We're hoping that you will join us in testing the new election data upload and management system for elections data, including voter registration and elections results data with a free account at http://www.USCountVotes.net .

USCountVotes documents and analysis are freely and publicly available to anyone with an Internet connection. Not one county in America today publicly releases or monitors its own detailed vote count data broken out by precinct and by vote type (absentee, early, overseas, military, provisional, and Election Day) that would reveal probable vote miscounts. See http://www.uscountvotes.org/ucvAnalysis/US/election_officials/ElectionArchive_advice.pdf

The National Election Data Archive's current system is its first rudimentary tool that can be immediately used to publish detailed election data from ongoing primary elections for independent analysts. In the absence of independent audits of voter verified paper ballots, detailed vote count data analysis is the only way to alert the public when probable vote count errors have occurred and provide court-worthy evidence in time to contest elections and obtain hand counts or re-elections.

Here's what we're looking for:

We're looking for volunteers around the country that want to obtain their local detailed elections data to sign up at http://www.USCountVotes.net/login.php . The accounts are free, and the assistance you'll provide is invaluable. An account at USCountVotes.net allows a user to upload documents for public archiving for analysis by anyone who is interested.

So register, sign in, request permission to upload elections data, upload data, and let us know how you like the system and what we can do to improve it. For security purposes, we must approve you to upload data and require typing in random characters when you log in.

We're also looking for volunteer archival administrators to insure that documents uploaded for each state are valid and correctly sourced through our site's document management system.

In addition to users who obtain and upload local election data from over 3300 separate local election offices, we need help with open records laws research. Each state has its own relevant open records laws, so letters requesting detailed elections data are required to be specifically tailored to the local laws. We're looking for someone to help organize research the specific formats of open records request letters for each state, so that we can publicly provide the open records letters that each states' volunteers will need. (See http://www.uscountvotes.net/public/ucv_select_info.php )

If you'd like to make a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. ( http://www.uscountvotes.org/fairelection/donate.html ) Donations would allow us to undertake new development programs and improve the site to better allow you to ensure the continuation of Democracy in America. For $2,000/month to pay for a programmer, we could finish the election archive project in time for the 2006 November general election including:

1. a similar public archive system for statistical analysis of election results by volunteer statisticians

2. parsing the election documents to standardize the information and allow for easier analytical consistency for any location in the country

3. enable upload of web pages by simply specifying the URL (right now volunteers must create a single file from a web page and upload it)

4. backup of all archived docs to servers at another Internet location

5. statistical programming to automate and publish statistical analysis of the election data

The National Election Data Archive is creating a standard, free resource for anyone interested in elections and voting. Please donate to this project so that our new programmer can commit enough hours to finishing it in time for the November 2006 general election. http://www.uscountvotes.org/fairelection/donate.html

I want to personally thank all the generous patriots who made donations for Ron Baiman and I to attend the upcoming May AAPOR.org
(American Association of Public Opinion Researchers) conference in order to rebut the arguments by the Election Science Institute and Mitofsky et al. that the exit polls do not show evidence of vote fraud; and to present the academic work that Ron and I performed regarding the Ohio exit polls. (See http://electionarchive.org/ucvAnalysis/US/exit-polls/Ohio2004-US-future.pdf and http://electionarchive.org/ucvAnalysis/OH/Ohio-Exit-Polls-2004.pdf and http://www.uscountvotes.org/ucvAnalysis/US/Exit-Poll-Analysis.pdf
Your generous donations did amount to more than needed to attend. However, we then paid a reasonable $700 in programming fees to roll out our public election data document archive system, and so still fell a little short for next week's conference. Ron and I have been working on papers and a slide presentation for the AAPOR conference which will be publicly released afterwards.

Hartz IV: Eingliederungsvereinbarung

Now, Davis turns to the exchanges of planning and violence between the slum city and the imperial one, between the Pentagon and groups from the periphery intent on disruption and, often, damage - and also to the possibilities that the city, even the slum city, holds for our future.

FEARS OVER PLANS FOR PHONE MASTS

MOBILE phone mast fears doubled this week when residents heard a mobile company submitted not one but two planning applications.
Vodaphone wants to put a 3G mast around 16 metres high on Willingdon Golf Club course.

Neighbours, some suffering from cancer and many fearing the associated health risks of living near a mast, had already written more than 80 letters of objection, but got a shock this week when they saw two proposals.

But it is understood that the company is hoping one of the two will be approved by Eastbourne Borough Council, not both.

Objectors now face the battle of collecting petitions once again to meet the specifics of both mast applications.

They take the form of a pole mast and a tree mast, the latter aiming to fit in with the wooded surroundings

Naomi Markwick, of Millbrook Gardens, has been leading the collection of written objections from her road, Colwood Crescent, plus Hill Road and others to submit to the borough council.

She said, "The tree mast is totally the wrong sort of species of tree for the area so the attempt to make the thing fit in would fail."

The site is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Mrs Markwick said, "There's quite a lot of rare wildlife there and it backs on to ancient woodland and such areas in Britain are few and far between."

The prospect of a second mast plan brought the main issue to the forefront again — objectors feel the health risks are overwhelming.

Mrs Markwick said, "There is a baby with leukaemia who is living next to the site and a number of people with cancer. I myself have a high risk of cancer because members of my family have had cancer and there are other people with immune problems."

Geoffrey Mears, of Downs Avenue, said, "We believe these masts are very dangerous.

"They are extremely hazardous to health."

Mr Mears and others quote anti-phone mast website Mastsanity.co.uk, the main national organisation opposing the insensitive siting of mobile phone and Tetra masts in the UK.

Mr Mears said, "These masts are being planned to go right at the back of a residential area so there will be a lot of people at risk.

"The original application was for one and now that's two the concern has doubled."

He said if the masts are situated on the golf course, it will devalue property in surrounding roads and cause stress to homeowners, "But this is nothing compared to the health risks," he added.

Formal written opposition to the plans must be with EBC planning department before the deadline on May 20.

The Death of The Internet?

Major telecommunications companies are spending millions lobbing the U.S. congress to make the Internet into a private network. In political lingo this means abandoning what is called "Net Neutrality". In common sense terms it's about the government withdrawing our right to Internet Freedom, it's about the Death of The Internet. This V-Doc. (viral documentary) is about the current threat to Internet Freedom and how we can hold on to the open Internet and our right to communicate.

The only way the telecommunications companies will be successful is if we fail to raise awareness about this situation. If people find out that we are about to lose our Internet Freedom there is no way they will allow congress to do this. http://www.coanews.org/netfreedom

This congressional decision will set a monumental precedent, and thus, impact not just U.S. citizens, but citizens all over world.

WISE ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS

Due to my concerns over all that is already going wrong and what more will go wrong a while back I wrote to numerous government officials and one televangelist. I wrote about the National I.D., Concentration Camps, New World Order, Wars, Nuclear Bombs. However, none of those men have done anything to address those serious dangers. The government officals are paid a nice salary with tax dollars and thus are supposed to represent the citizens. The televangelist makes a good income from television. While he speaks of the serious dangers, he doesn't take any actions to address the serious dangers. Why are all of these men so accepting of the serious dangers?

It appears to me that unless something is done soon to turn the situation around we are on the brink of a World Nuclear War from what I read within one to three months. Perhaps those men are so content and not trying to stop such worse case scenario because they don't really mind that happening and they have access to bomb shelters. Most people don't have access to bomb shelters. I don't like a society's leaders to be content with serious dangers.

Of course most government officials and religious leaders are men and they have been doing a terrible job about every serious danger in this society. It all makes me wish for a government with women as leaders of government and religion.

You can see the letters I wrote to them at the link below. I've described my worries and given them wise advice about how to solve the serious societal problems that seem to be what the treacherous and murderous powers that be are upset about.

Please copy and paste this message into a blank e-mail form and mail it to people on your personal and business e-mail mailing lists. The more people that know more details the better. I have some interesting photos on the website.

Protestieren Sie gegen Gewalt an Regenwald-Indianern in Ecuador

http://www.regenwald.org/protestaktion.php?id=68

HALLIBURTON SOLVES GLOBAL WARMING

SurvivaBalls save managers from abrupt climate change

An advanced new technology will keep corporate managers safe even when climate change makes life as we know it impossible.

"The SurvivaBall is designed to protect the corporate manager no matter what Mother Nature throws his or her way," said Fred Wolf, a Halliburton representative who spoke today at the Catastrophic Loss conference held at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Amelia Island, Florida. "This technology is the only rational response to abrupt climate change," he said to an attentive and appreciative audience.

Most scientists believe global warming is certain to cause an accelerating onslaught of hurricanes, floods, droughts, tornadoes, etc. and that a world-destroying disaster is increasingly possible. For example, Arctic melt has slowed the Gulf Stream by 30% in just the last decade; if the Gulf Stream stops, Europe will suddenly become just as cold as Alaska. Global heat and flooding events are also increasingly possible.

In order to head off such catastrophic scenarios, scientists agree we must reduce our carbon emissions by 70% within the next few years. Doing that would seriously undermine corporate profits, however, and so a more forward-thinking solution is needed.

At today's conference, Wolf and a colleague demonstrated three SurvivaBall mockups, and described how the units will sustainably protect managers from natural or cultural disturbances of any intensity or duration. The devices - looking like huge inflatable orbs - will include sophisticated communications systems, nutrient gathering capacities, onboard medical facilities, and a daunting defense infrastructure to ensure that the corporate mission will not go unfulfilled even when most human life is rendered impossible by catastrophes or the consequent epidemics and armed conflicts.

"It's essentially a gated community for one," said Wolf.

Dr. Northrop Goody, the head of Halliburton's Emergency Products Development Unit, showed diagrams and videos describing the SurvivaBall's many features. "Much as amoebas link up into slime molds when threatened, SurvivaBalls also fulfill a community function. After all, people need people," noted Goody as he showed an artist's rendition of numerous SurvivaBalls linking up to form a managerial aggregate with functional differentiation, metaphorically dancing through the streets of Houston, Texas.

The conference attendees peppered the duo with questions. One asked how the device would fare against terrorism, another whether the array of embedded technologies might make the unit too cumbersome; a third brought up the issue of the unit's cost feasibility. Wolf and Goody assured the audience that these problems and others were being addressed.

"The SurvivaBall builds on Halliburton's reputation as a disaster and conflict industry innovator," said Wolf. "Just as the Black Plague led to the Renaissance and the Great Deluge gave Noah a monopoly of the animals, so tomorrow's catastrophes could well lead to good - and industry must be ready to seize that good."

Goody also noted that Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society was set to employ the SurvivaBall as part of its Corporate Sustenance (R) program. Another of Cousteau's CSR programs involves accepting a generous sponsorship from the Dow Chemical Corporation, whose general shareholder meeting is May 11.

Igniting A Revolution: Voices in Defense of the Earth

Authors include: Derrick Jensen, John Zerzan, Robert Jensen, Marilyn Buck, Jeff Luers, Robert Thaxton, Russ Redner, Ashanti Alston, Kazi Toure, Fred Hampton Jr., Sara Olson, John Wade, Marti Kheel, Richard Kahn, Ann Hansen, Rosalie Little Thunder, and many more.

Eds. Steven Best, and Anthony J. Nocella, II

ITEM OVERVIEW

Global warming, acid rain, deforestation, air and water pollution are but a few of the overwhelming indicators that the earth's health is worsening. For decades, environmental groups have been resisting the destructive trends set by industry and government, but as the social and political climate has changed, popular protest movements have become less and less effective. As the earth's situation worsens, those opposing its destruction have out of necessity become increasingly militant. Corporate and federal properties have been vandalized, set ablaze-even bombed-and the government is meeting this new brand of environmental militance with an increasingly heavy hand.

Whether you're drawn by frustration with environmental strategies that, to date, have been ineffective against this growing ecological crisis, or simply by curiosity (Who are these people? Why are they doing this? What do they hope to gain?), Igniting a Revolution offers a fascinating and compelling look at the emerging movement of revolutionary environmentalism.

Includes essays by Marilyn Buck, Robert Jensen, John Zerzan, Ashanti Alston, Jeffrey "Free" Luers, Derrick Jensen, Ann Hansen, and a preface by Bron Taylor.

"This volume will interest any reader who wishes to hear directly from some of the leading intellectuals, activists and prisoners involved in these movements. The insights gained by listening directly to these voices...can hardly be overestimated"—Bron Taylor, from the preface. "There's no way that anyone can agree with everything laid out in this collection. But there is no way, either, that we can afford to ignore these varied voices, because the one sure path to destruction is that of business as usual."—Joel Kovel, The Enemy of Nature

"As we face unprecedented ecological crises, along with growing political violence and state repression, revolutionary enivronmentalists claim that another world is possible. This book promises important insights into radical alternativesw and principled resistance"—John Sorenson

"Can extralegal means justify an end? The future of terrestrial life itself may depend on whether or not serious debate on that very point is put back on the public agenda. Igniting a Revolution threatens to do just that."—Chris Hannah, Propagandhi

1600 Sheep Die After Grazing in Genetically Engineered Cotton Fields

Over 1600 sheep apparently died this month in India after ingesting genetically engineered (GE) cotton. The massive deaths occurred after several days of grazing in fields where Monsanto’s Bt and herbicide resistant spliced varieties of cotton were planted. Scientists from India's Centre for Sustainable Agriculture are calling on the government to launch a study into the impacts of GE cotton toxins.

Despite Court Ban in France Monsanto Says Field Tests of GE Crops Will Continue

France’s top judicial court has denied Monsanto's requests to grow test plots of genetically engineered corn in two locations. The court says the biotech corporation has not provided enough details about where these experimental field trials would be located. Monsanto has responded by saying that despite the court ruling, the corporation will continue testing genetically engineered crops in France. "We'll continue our experiments, but we might have to change a bit the way we ask for licenses in the future," said Yann Fichet, director of external relations for Monsanto France.

Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America

BIRD FLU SCARE HITS U.S. - IN A MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE

Last night, ABC aired a movie entitled "Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America". The film portrayed a worse-case scenario outbreak where millions of people die within the first few weeks of an avian flu pandemic. The network advertised the film as being based on fact and stated it was "one step ahead of the headlines." A coalition of public interest organizations, including the Organic Consumers Association have called on ABC to take a step back from sensationalism and present its viewers with factual information on the spread of such diseases. A letter written by the coalition to Anne Sweeney, the President of Disney-ABC, states "The role of large industrial-scale poultry operations – where up to hundreds of thousands of birds can be housed indoors in cramped conditions – is not being examined by most of the media or by government officials charged with preventing the spread of the virus. Such facilities not only provide prime conditions for the mutation and spread of the virus between birds, but also rely heavily on genetically similar birds not likely to be resistant to disease."

From Organic Bytes #81

VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS & THE BIRD FLU PANDEMIC

The White House is advising the public to stockpile food and water to prepare for a potential bird flu pandemic. The Bush Administration's report states that since the pandemic could kill as many as two million Americans, massive taxpayer subsidies must be handed over to the pharmaceutical industry to develop a magic bullet vaccine. Meanwhile, according to Wall Street analysts, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has already pocketed million dollars off of his investments in the company Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the world’s most popular influenza remedy. On the other hand, the United Nations global coordinator on Avian Influenza is considering a more holistic approach to dealing with a potential outbreak. The result is a series of reports, including one entitled, "The Pivotal Role for Natural Products in Countering an Avian Influenza Pandemic". The report, authored by four leading scientists and doctors in the fields of nutritional medicine and health, focuses on the key nutrients zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin A as primary supplemental medicines to strengthen peoples’ immunes systems to fight off the flu. According to the report's lead author, "Following an extensive review of over 250 peer reviewed studies, we believe that the protocols developed here can help to buy time and fill the gap between the outbreak of a pandemic and the months or years required for development and manufacture of effective vaccines."

Supposed Withdrawal of Coke & Other Sodas from Schools Nothing But Industry PR?

DESPITE BIG SODA PR, COMPANIES WON'T BE LEAVING SCHOOLS

Last week, big soda producers like Coca-Cola and Pepsi sucked up volumes of positive press after announcing that they were removing soda pop from U.S. schools. The beverage companies seemed to be finally responding to pressure from parents across the nation concerned about junk foods and beverages in schools and childhood obesity. A closer look at the actual statements of the soda giants, however, reveals that no actual implementation of these policies is planned. In fact, according to the American Beverage Association, an industry trade group representing soda companies, the so-called new policy is completely voluntary, and first requires that individual school districts actually request to have soda machines removed. Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association said: "This is a voluntary policy, but I think schools will want to follow it." Because school districts already have the power to add or remove vending machines from schools, last week's policy announcement from the soda industry amounts to nothing more than another deceptive, albeit clever PR campaign.

STOP THE USDA’S LATEST SNEAK ATTACK ON ORGANIC STANDARDS

ALERT

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, no doubt hoping to limit public controversy, has announced a very short public comment period (ends May 12, 2006) on proposed new federal regulations that will weaken organic standards. USDA’s proposed amendments, supported by grocery store chains and large food corporations, will allow so-called organic dairy feedlots to continuously import calves from conventional farms—where the calves have been weaned on blood, dosed with antibiotics, and fed genetically engineered grains and slaughterhouse waste. USDA’s new rules will also allow over 500 artificial (synthetic) substances in organic processed foods without prior scrutiny and review by the National Organic Standards Board. USDA’s latest efforts are basically an attempt to codify last fall’s controversial “Sneak Attack” in Congress, when industry players and the Organic Trade Association convinced the Republican Party majority to attach a last minute rider to the 2006 Agricultural Appropriations Bill. Take action now and tell the USDA to back off on lowering standards!

http://www.organicconsumers.org/sos.cfm

ALERT: FREE THOUSANDS OF AMERICA’S ORGANIC COWS FROM INTENSIVE CONFINEMENT

The USDA is also seeking public comments on revisions it has made to the National Organic Program regarding pasture access for organic dairy cattle. Two of the largest organic dairy companies in the nation, Horizon Organic (a subsidiary of Dean Foods), a supplier to Wal-Mart and many health food stores; and Aurora Organic, a supplier of private brand name organic milk to Costco, Safeway, Giant, Wild Oats and others, are purchasing the majority of their milk from so-called organic feedlot dairies where the cows are kept in intensive confinement, with little or no access to pasture. Together, Horizon and Aurora control nearly 65% of the organic dairy market. Recent scientific studies have shown that humanely raised, grass-fed dairy and beef are qualitatively better for human health and the environment. Take action to close the loopholes in organic standards that currently allow factory farm dairies to call their products “organic.”

http://www.organicconsumers.org/nosb2.htm

HORIZON AND AURORA BANNED IN CO-OPS

One month ago, after a poll of our members, the Organic Consumers Association called on consumers to boycott dairy companies like Horizon and Aurora for their practice of raising "organic" cattle on intensive confinement feedlots. A number of natural food stores and co-ops across the U.S. are beginning to respond to concerned consumers and removing suspect dairy products from their stores. The Wedge Co-op in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the second largest co-op in the U.S., no longer carries Horizon products. In Colorado, the Boulder Co-op Market, has also discontinued stocking Horizon products. Amy Wyatt, Assistant General Manager for the Co-op, says, "Based on our concerns regarding Horizon's practices, we didn't feel that continuing to carry this company's products was consistent with our mission and values.” Dean Foods, Horizon’s parent company, is also starting to come under fire for abandoning U.S. organic soybean farmers and importing cheap soybeans from China, where organic standards are dubious, and farm labor wages and conditions are abysmal. Dean Foods now controls the nation’s largest organic soymilk brand, Silk, as well as the largest organic tofu brand, White Wave.

Virtually every industrial country, except for the United States, has banned the use of rBGH. Milk produced from cows injected with rBGH poses serious hazards to human health, including increased risks for cancer. The time has come to kick rBGH off the market, once and for all. If Starbucks, a major buyer of milk, were to ban rBGH dairy products in its coffee beverages other major corporations would likely do the same. STOP LIVE DOG BURNING TESTS IN CHINA http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/454118246

Animal Defenders International (ADI) and our sister group, The National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAV are launching a campaign to shame the Chinese Government into halting cruel tests involving burning of dogs. Tim Phillips, Campaigns Director for ADI says: “These are perhaps the cruelest experiments we have ever uncovered, these dogs must have been in almost unimaginable agony. Worse still, these animals suffered and died in vain, there are ways of conducting this research without animals, and dogs are simply a bad research model for human beings."

This petition will help to enhance and support the campaign to put an end to Chinese Torture on Animals. It will be forwarded to the Chinese Government. STOP LIVE DOG BURNING TESTS IN CHINA

The horrific series of experiments in which dogs are being burned alive took place at the Third Military Medical University at Chongqing, China. The experiments appeared in the Chinese scientific journal: ŒZhonghua Shao Shang Za Zhi. NAVS and ADI have uncovered three experiments published since 1999 and believe the programme of research continues. The 3 experiments involved:-

1. 37 dogs burned with napalm - The pain of napalm is so excruciating that people have died from the pain alone. The pain felt by the dogs would have been unbearable. The dogs were then kept alive with their agonizing burns for three days. 72hours of hell.

2. 26 dogs were burned so severely that their brains swelled - In order to determine the value of scanning equipment in diagnosing brain swelling due to excess water (oedema) following burns, dogs were inflicted with third degree skin burns, over half of their bodies. Yet, scanning techniques such as MRI cause little or no suffering to people so it is difficult to understand why the information could not have been derived from studies of burns patients.

3. 24 dogs were deliberately scalded and suffered steam inhalation injuries – 24 mongrel dogs were used in an experiment in which 40% of their total body surface area was deliberately scalded, giving them third degree burns, and they were left alive for up to two days. Some of the dogs died from shock within 36 hours.

Dear friends who care about our earth. Judge for yourself if you want to take action. In the Valle de San Felix, the purest water in Chile runs from 2 rivers, fed by 2 glaciers. Water is a most precious resource, and wars will be fought for it. Indigenous farmers use the water, there is no unemployment, and they provide the second largest source of income for the area. Under the glaciers has been found a huge deposit of gold, silver and other minerals. To get at these, it would be necessary to break, to destroy the glaciers - something never conceived of in the history of the world – and to make 2 huge holes, each as big as a whole mountain, one for extraction and one for the mine's rubbish tip. The project is called PASCUA LAMA. The company is called Barrick Gold. The operation is planned by a multi-national company, one of whose members is George Bush Senior. The Chilean Government has approved the project to start this year, 2006. The only reason it hasn't started yet is because the farmers have got a temporary stay of execution. If they destroy the glaciers, they will not just destroy the source of specially pure water, but they will permanently contaminate the 2 rivers so they will never again be fit for human or animal consumption because of the use of cyanide and sulphuric acid in the extraction process. Every last gramme of gold will go abroad to the multinational company and not one will be left with the people whose land it is. They will only be left with the poisoned water and the resulting illnesses. The farmers have been fighting a long time for their land, but have been forbidden to make a TV appeal by a ban from the Ministry of the Interior. Their only hope now of putting brakes on this project is to get help from international justice. The world must know what is happening in Chile. The only place to start changing the world is from here. We ask you to circulate this message amongst your friends in the following way. Please copy this text, paste it into a new email adding your signature and send it to everyone in your address book. Please will the
100th person to receive and sign the petition send it to noapascualama@yahoo.ca to be forwarded to the Chilean government. No to Pascua Lama Open-cast mine in the Andean Cordillera on the Chilean-Argentine frontier. We ask the Chilean Government not to authorize the Pascua Lama project to protect the whole of 3 glaciers, the purity of the water of the San Felix Valley and El Transito, the quality of the agricultural land of the region of Atacama, the quality of life of the Diaguita people and of the whole population of the region.

Subject: Gold-mining Co. wants to destroy Glaciers!

Message: We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:
Say “No” to the project “Pascua-Lama”.

Target: John McDonough, Vicepresident, Barrick

Say “No” to the project “Pascua-Lama”. A project of the transnational enterprise Barrick Gold, is a clear menace to some glaciers in a region of Los Andes. Some of the actions are move three glaciers in the frontier between Chile and Argentina, to extract 547 tons of gold.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/946839131

This will poison whole eco-systems!

The Jewelers of America are putting pressure on gold-mining companies to use ecologically safer methods of extraction. Tiffany ran a full-page ad in the NY Times asking them to. No response from the big conglomerates so far! Go to I think it's GreenKarat for more info.

Please sign this petition! This is the beginning of a whole movement to rein in the destructive gold-mining business. Buy your gold jewelry second-hand; or, have old gold jewelry melted down and re-fashioned! Until the mining industry CLEANS UP ITS ACT! It takes an average of 3 tons of usually-toxic waste -- to make just one gold wedding ring!

"It is only when more people in the US begin to fathom the totality of the destruction in Iraq," writes Dahr Jamail, "that one may expect to hear the public outcry and uprising necessary to end the occupation and bring to justice the war criminals responsible for these conditions. How prosperity generates poverty

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Paul B. Trescott

05/09/06

There is a predictable annual ritual which begins when the Census Bureau releases its estimates that roughly one eighth of Americans live in poverty, and that this proportion has been relatively invariant in recent years despite the steady rise of per capita real incomes. This is followed by predictable rant by the anti-free-market crowd who lament the presence of an alarming number of children in poverty (a legitimate concern) and declaim that 'the system' must be seriously flawed and who advocate more heroic interventions to alleviate this condition. There follows a pro-free-market backlash which points out that a large proportion of the 'poor' own cars, color TV, air conditioning, and that compared to residents of mud huts in rural Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, or Brazil, the American poor aren't very poor...

Aiming for a more subtle occupation

Los Angeles Times

05/09/06

Some American troops in Iraq have been their 'own worst enemy,' unintentionally creating new insurgents by treating the Iraqi people in a heavy-handed or insensitive manner, according to the U.S. commander in charge of day-to-day military operations. Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli, in a weekend training session with troops and in an interview afterward, said he found a need to reemphasize to soldiers that they must use reasonable force and treat the Iraqi culture with respect, in part because the insurgency has persisted and grown. 'We have to understand that the way we treat Iraqis has a direct effect on the number of insurgents that we are fighting,' Chiarelli said in the interview with The Times after the seminar with about three dozen soldiers and Marines at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad. Iranians fault Rice's dismissal of letter

Detroit Free Press

05/09/06

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's abrupt dismissal of a letter from Iran's president might only strengthen hardline attitudes and mistrust of America, some Iranians warned Tuesday. As President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began a high-profile visit to a key Muslim country, Indonesia, a former top Iranian official said Rice's response will give new justification to those who oppose ties with the U.S. Iran's former ambassador to France, Sadeq Kharrazi, said the letter -- the first from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years -- 'could have been a turning point in relations.' But he said Rice squandered the opportunity with what he called a 'hasty reaction'...

Original Message:

I just finished writing another petition. This time I'm trying to save the BUFFALO and BISON from extinction at Yellowstone since the Governor Schweitzer issued a request to shoot all of them. More than 300 have been killed to date and we don't want them to be an endangerred species. With Endangerred Species Day, May 11th right around the corner will you help sign this so much needed petition now? They deserve to be here as much as you and I. It's a great place to bring kids . Importstopp von Katzen- und Hundefellen

130.000 Unterstützer für Importstopp

Liebe Tierfreundin, lieber Tierfreund,

Poor and minority women have long worked in the paid labor force. During the last four decades, middle class women have joined them, but American society has done precious little to restructure the workplace or family life. The result? Working moms get treated to brunch or dinner on Mother's Day, but are burdened and exhausted the rest of the year.
