Villagers in Beckford took to the streets armed with chainsaws and axes after a telegraph pole appeared on their village green.

Bt didn't need planning permission to put the 23ft pole slap bang in the middle of the green. But it didn't bank on the fury of the residents. The pole appeared on Tuesday, ruining views of the ninth century church and dwarfing an oak planted in 1990 to mark the Queen Mother's 90th birthday.

Villagers started a petition and kicked up such a fuss that by Thursday, BT caved in and removed the mast.

Sally Stringer, who runs Beckford Stores, said residents would be keeping a close eye on the situation.

She said workmen told her the pole had been put in the wrong place and that it would have to go elsewhere.

"We got 36 names on a petition in half a day before they came and took the pole away," she said.

"I understand cables have to be replaced but they can put them underground. This area is so special.

"It's a beautiful village green. What they did was a legalised form of vandalism. The village was spitting about it.

"It spoiled an outstanding view of the church. It was totally out of order."

BT did not need planning permission for the pole because the village green is common land.

County councillor Adrian Hardman (Con, Bredon) said: "It's one of the prettiest views around Bredon Hill.

"The tree was completely dwarfed by the giant pole. It was quite extraordinary."

BT spokeswoman Anna Steven said: "The installation of a new pole was necessary to raise overhead cable.

"BT has statutory powers to site equipment on public land but we always consider a range of factors such as best possible position in terms of the service to be provided, visual amenity and local circumstances.

"On occasions the balance between cost effectiveness, aesthetics and safety can be difficult to achieve.

"In this case, given local objections, the pole has been removed in the interim while we seek an alternative solution."

Zahlreiche Anrainer von Mobilfunkmasten meldeten dem Umweltmediziner der Ärztekammer gesundheitliche Störungen. Genaue Auskünfte bei Kleine-Telefonstunde.

Der Bauer kann nicht mehr schlafen, die Bäuerin leidet unter Kopfschmerzen, das Radio ist gestört und das Vieh unfruchtbar. Und das alles, seit ein Mobilfunkmast in der Nähe des Hofes aufgestellt wurde.

Der Anrufer, der dem Umweltmediziner der Kärntner Ärztekammer, Dieter Schmidt, diesen Bericht übermittelte, ist ein Bauer aus dem Mölltal. Nur einer von vielen, die sich nach dem Kleine-Artikel "Strahlende Gefahr" mit einer Aufzählung von Beschwerden bei Schmidt gemeldet haben. "Schlafstörungen ziehen sich überall durch", hat Schmidt festgestellt. Dazu kommen Infektanfälligkeit und Müdigkeit wie bei einem Studenten aus Lölling. Wenn er wieder nach Graz fährt, verschwinden seine Beschwerden. Der Zustand des Vater verbesserte sich, als er ins Untergeschoss zog, wo die Strahlung in geringerer Menge auftrifft.

Tinnitus. Aus Ferlach wurden Tinnitus-Fälle gemeldet, aus St. Veit Migräne, im Lavanttal trat Brustkrebs auf, für Experten auch ein Hinweis auf hochfrequente elektromagnetische Strahlung. "Die Betroffenen haben versichert, dass die Beschwerden erst nach dem Aufstellen der Sendeanlagen aufgetreten sind", erläutert Schmidt, der jeder Meldung nachgehen wird, um sie wissenschaftlich zu beweisen. "Die Häufung der Symptome zeigt, dass es sich bei den Anrufern nicht um Hypochonder handelt". Deshalb wurde auch die Sanitätsdirektion des Landes Abteilung Umweltmedizin eingeschaltet.

Wiew Presslufthammer. "Die Politik ist am Zug. Sie muss endlich Grenzwerte festlegen", fordert Schmidt. Die Grundlagenforschung habe bewiesen, dass elektromagnetische Strahlung genauso gefährlich sei wie Röntgenstrahlen. Besonders schädlich sei das "gepulste System", erklärt der deutsche Umweltanalytiker und Strahlungsexperte Dietrich Moldan. Dadurch werden hochfrequente Wellen als Datenpaket versendet und wirken mit 1733 Impulsen pro Sekunde wie ein Presslufthammer. Betroffene Menschen können sich durch baubiologische Maßnahmen schützen. "Es gibt inzwischen Abschirm-Materialien, die Strahlung reduzieren können".

Spezielle Anstriche, aluminiumbedampfte Ziegel, Schutzplatten oder Gitter können helfen. Details über Beschwerden und Schutzmaßnahmen bei der Kleine-Telefonstunde am Mittwoch, 29. März, um 14 Uhr.

Victor Paris Bathrooms, are fairly near to where Paul and I live, they had 2 masts at the rear of their premises. Paul was out walking the other night at 10.30pm, low and behold there were contractors working at the back of Victor Paris, Paul enquired and was told they were removing the mobile masts as Victor Paris no longer wanted them.

Needless to say Paul phoned me straight away to give me the good news, I said I'd email people I thought would be interested, i.e. yourself and others who were such a help to us during our campaign.

Die neuen Killer-Felder: elektromagnetische Waffen

Zu derselben Zeit, als das Militär noch vehement leugnete, dass die Bestrahlung durch elektromagnetische Felder überhaupt irgendwel­che biologische Wirkungen haben könnte, war man längst mit der Erprobung solcher Wirkungen als potentielle Waffen beschäftigt - Waffen, die den enormen Vorzug haben, vollkommen lautlos und der Wahrnehmung nicht zugänglich zu sein.

Das EMP-Konzept ist inzwischen ausgeweitet worden. Man kann jetzt mit neuentwickelten Vorrichtungen auch unabhängig von Atom­explosionen EMP-Impulse erzeugen. Solche Geräte ließen sich gegen feindliche Kommando- und Kontrollzentren oder gegen Flugzeuge mit der Absicht einsetzen, die Elektronik lahmzulegen. Von diesem Programm ist HPM (High-Power Pulsed Microwave= Hochleistungspuls-Mikrowelle) abgeleitet, ein System, das intensive, extrem kurze Mikrowellenimpulse erzeugt. Gegenwärtig werden mehrere Ty­pen mit Frequenzen von 1200 M Hz bis 35 GHz und einer Leistung bis zu 1000 Megawatt getestet, auch im Hinblick auf einen mögli­chen Einsatz gegen Menschen.

Ein jüngst erschienener Artikel, der sich auf das Testprogramm der Abteilung für Mikrowellenforschung am Walter Reed Army Institute of Research stützt, stellt fest: «Mikrowellenenergie in dem militärisch wichtigen Bereich von l bis 15 GHz (Anmerkung: Mobilfunkfrequenzen 0,9 bis 2,4 GHz) dringt in alle Organsysteme des Körpers ein und stellt daher für alle Organsysteme auch eine Gefähr­dung dar.» Die Auswirkungen auf das Zentralnervensystem werden als sehr wichtig angesehen.

Das Testprogramm, das 1986 anlief, be­schäftigt sich mit vier Gebieten:

1. Wirkung durch sofortige Entkräf­tung,

2. sofortige Reizung durch akustische Wirkungen,

3. Wirkungen durch Beeinflussung oder Verhinderung der Arbeit, und

4. Wirkungen auf das reizgesteuerte Verhalten.

Der Bericht fährt fort: «Mikrowel­lenimpulse scheinen sich mit dem Zentralnervensystem zu koppeln und Reize hervorzubringen, die mit nichtthermischer elektrischer Reizwirkung zu vergleichen sind.» Offensichtlich kann HPM das Verhalten auf die gleiche Weise verändern wie Delgados elektrische Stimu­lation.

Gegenüber den subtilen Veränderungen, die ELF-Felder auslösen, kommen die Veränderungen im kognitiven Bereich und im Verhalten durch HPM der Wirkung eines Dampfhammers gleich. Einem aus dem Jahre 1982 stammenden Bericht der Luftwaffe zur Biotechnologie zu­folge lassen sich ELF-Frequenzen für eine Reihe militärischer Zwecke einsetzen, so z. B. «um mit terroristischen Gruppen fertig zu werden, Massenansammlungen unter Kontrolle zu halten, Anschlägen auf die Sicherheit militärischer Einrichtungen zu begegnen und zum Einsatz gegen Menschen bei der taktischen Kriegführung».

Derselbe Bericht stellt fest: «[Elektromagnetische] Systeme würden eingesetzt werden, um schwache bis ernste physiologische Beeinträchtigungen, Wahrneh­mungsverzerrungen oder Desorientierung hervorzurufen. Sie sind leise, und es könnte sich als schwierig erweisen, Gegenmaßnahmen zu ent­wickeln.»

Der militärische Organismus hat seine Muskulatur durch eine ganz neue Art von Waffen auf der Grundlage elektromagnetischer Felder er­gänzt. Immer noch ist die C3I-Doktrin an Ausdehnung und Bedeutung im Wachsen begriffen. Es ist nicht unwahrscheinlich, dass es dem Mili­tär letztendlich gelingen könnte, die völlige geistige Herrschaft über die Zivilbevölkerung zu erlangen.

Ich habe hier nicht den Versuch gemacht, den Zusammenhang zwi­schen militärischen Überlegungen und der Gefährdung durch künstli­che elektromagnetische Felder auch nur annähernd vollständig darzu­stellen. Die komplizierte und gefährliche Lage auf diesem Gebiet geht über das Thema dieses Buches hinaus, wenn man von der Tatsache ab­sieht, dass von den militärischen Überlegungen beeinflußte politische Entscheidungen die öffentliche Anerkennung der Gefahren erfolgreich behindert haben.

Meiner Ansicht nach glauben die militärisch Mächti­gen immer noch, das Überleben des militärischen Organismus rechtfer­tige das Opfer des Lebens und der Gesundheit von großen Teilen der amerikanischen Bevölkerung.

There are many benefits to studying at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. Ubiquitous wireless Internet access, however, isn't one of them. That's because president Fred Gilbert won't allow it until he's satisfied EMF (electric and magnetic fields) exposure doesn't pose a health risk, particularly to young people.

Gilbert says he based his decision on scientific literature that indicates the potential for “some fairly significant” health consequences.

“These are particularly relevant in younger people (who have) fast-growing tissues, and most of our student body are late teenagers and still growing, so it’s just a matter of taking precautions and providing an environment that doesn’t have a potential risk associated risk,” he said.

Gilbert cited studies done by scientists for the California Public Utilities Commission, whose findings boil down to the fact that while there is no proven link between EMFs exposure and diseases such as leukemia and brain tumours, the possible risk warrants further investigation. He also said Canadian regulation allows for a higher minimum degree of exposure to EMFs than do some other countries.

“All I’m saying is while the jury’s out on this one, I’m not going to put in place what is potential chronic exposure for our students,” he said. Gilbert added he believes there are many environmental impacts that are not manifest for 30 to 40 years after exposure. “Second-hand tobacco exposure is a case in point,” he said. “We’re just finding out now what some of those impacts are. Asbestos is another example.”

Lakehead has some wireless access, but only where the university’s fibre optic network doesn’t reach. There are plenty of computers around campus where students can access the Internet 24 hours a day, so it’s not like they’re cut off, Gilbert said.

CURITIBA, Brazil - Emotions and sensitivity are "the essence, the core dimension of the human being," said the Brazilian theologian at a panel on "ethics, biodiversity and sustainability". The panel formed part of the Global Civil Society Forum, held parallel to the Mar. 20-31 Eighth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP8).

It is not reason but feeling that is involved in our first contact with reality, and "today's great crisis is not economic, political or religious, but a crisis of affect, of the capacity to feel a connection with others," he said.

It is indispensable to "take care of all living things," and science shows that cooperation is the "supreme law of the universe," he added.

"The world is not made up of objects but of relationships. It was cooperation that made possible the leap from animal to humanity, and without it we are dehumanised, which is what occurs in the case of capitalism," the theologian told around 300 activists, most of them small farmers.

He added that the principle of responsibility underlies the criticism of transgenic products, the need to take precautions in the face of unpredictable and unknown consequences, the possibility that genetic modification of food could break down the balance between the "billions of bacteria" and molecules that make up a human being.

Boff, who left the priesthood after suffering sanctions at the hands of the Vatican for expressing "dangerous ideas" over the past two decades, has outlined his ecological concerns in several books. He has been invited to give talks at several panels at the COP8.

Boff is one of the founders of liberation theology, which is based on a "preferential option for the poor", whose proponents' involvement in the struggles of the poor and marginalised sectors of the population often brought them into conflict with a more conservative Catholic Church hierarchy in the past.

The expression "sustainable development" is "a deception to undermine the demands of environmentalists" by joining together two contradictory concepts, he told the participants in the Global Civil Society Forum.

Development "comes from the capitalist economy," which supposes a constant rise in production, consumption and wealth as part of an illusion of "infinite resources," while sustainability has to do with biology, "the dynamic equilibrium of interrelated beings," he said.

In order for the consumption levels of industrialised countries to become universal, "two additional planet earths" would be needed, he said.

But earlier international conferences have already concluded that by continuing along that road, the earth would no longer be sustainable by 2030 or 2035, and would suffer major catastrophes, said Boff. "We have become the earth's Satan," said Boff. "Either we change or we die."

An equally menacing portrait was painted by Louise Vandelac, director of the Environmental Sciences Institute at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), Canada. Vandelac focussed on the area of biotechnology, and warned that more than biodiversity, it is "the world's biological security that is threatened by the cannibalism of the market."

A second generation of transgenic research and technology has now emerged, devoted to producing genetically modified animals, she said.

The research being carried out today is very different from that of the previous 25 years, she noted. Scientific literature from the last few months reveals that more than 200 tests have already been conducted on pigs, rabbits, cows and fish, and soon the first transgenic salmon could be unveiled in Canada, she reported.

This technology has been highly concentrated up until now, with just four countries - the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Canada û accounting for 96 percent of transgenic commercial production. Moreover, 95 percent of this production is made up of only four crops, namely soybeans, cotton, corn and canola. In the meantime, Monsanto Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans occupy a full 75 percent of the total area planted with transgenic crops in the world today.

The biotechnology industry's marked interest in developing pesticide-resistant plant varieties owes to the fact that producing a new pesticide costs ten times more, said Vandelac.

Roundup Ready seeds, which produce crops that are resistant to Monsanto's own glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, have guaranteed continued sales of the weedicide. The use of Roundup on transgenic crops dropped off during the first few years, but is now growing at a rate of four percent annually.

Studies reveal a 70 percent decline in the toad population in areas where transgenic soybeans are grown. One hypothesis is that Roundup herbicide is altering the animals' hormonal systems and thus interfering with their reproduction, said Vandelac.

Nevertheless, there are "new hopes" emerging as people are becoming more aware of the threats posed by transgenics and pushing for clear regulations that enforce limits on the ambitions of private enterprise, with social movements joining with environmentalists, trade unionists, feminists and other activists in defence of biological security, she concluded.

Argentine lawmaker Marta Maffei called for efforts to combat "cultural domination," the mother of all dominations, in her view.

Maffei maintained that politicians adopt decisions "without knowing anything about environmental issues," and depend on the advice of specialists who work for private companies that have no interest whatsoever in preserving biodiversity.

Social mobilisation is the only way to break this "vicious cycle of environmental domination," she declared.

A city MP has urged the Government to reconsider its rules on mobile phone masts.

Leicester South Labour MP Sir Peter Soulsby spoke out after a Government inspector backed phone firm O2's bid to put six antennae on Elizabeth House, in Leicester, which already has 16.

The city council refused planning permission last summer, due to concerns about a cumulative health risk for residents.

O2 won permission on appeal after the inspector ruled that "the planning system is not the place for determining health safeguards".

Sir Peter said: "It's an absolute disgrace - I bet the inspector doesn't have to live with a jumble of electrical equipment over his flat.

"I think there's a case for a dramatic change in the law, to switch the balance of power away from the phone companies and towards local councils." He said that, although they were essential, masts could sited be away from residential buildings.

GSM Mobiltelefone strahlen Mikrowellen aus, genauso extrem niederfrequente Felder. Wir untersuchten die potenziellen Störungen von GSM Mobiltelefon-Strahlung, entweder als Ganzes (MW + ELF-Felder) oder als substanziell abgeschwächte MW-Energie (dh. vorwiegend begrenzt auf ihre ELF-Komponente) auf die Embryonenentwicklung bei Hühnern. Die Effektivität der entwickelten Schutzvorrichtung, um die pathologischen Wirkungen rückgängig zu machen, die mit der Bestrahlung verbunden waren, wurden auch bewertet.

Die Quelle der elektromagnetischen Strahlung (EM)-Strahlung, war ein kommerzielles 900 Hz GSM digitales Mobiltelefon (SAGEM, France) mit 2W Energie-Leistung.

Wenn es nötig war, wurde geerdete Kupfergaze (Soulas &Cie, Montreuill Sous-Bois, France) mit genügend feinem Maschenabstand (350 µm) und genügend durchlässig für ELF-Felder benutzt, um die Energie von der beteiligten MW im Mobiltelefon EMR-Spectrum abzuschwächen. Die Magnitude von MW und ELF-Feldern wurde gemessen und zeigte die höchste Energie in der nächsten Nähe des Telefonkästchens und in der Luft.

Die Studie wurde mit befruchteten Hühnereiern der Rasse Kabir Blanche (Couvoir, Cevennen, Camargue, France) begonnen. 4 Gruppen mit je 60 Eiern wurden untersucht. Die Kontrollgruppe wurde in Abwesenheit von Mobiltelefonen ausgebrütet.

Die Mobiltelefone + die Kupferfilter-Gruppe wurde einem eingeschalteten Mobiltelefon ausgesetzt, aber es wurde von der MW mittels Kupferfilter abgeschirmt. Das Mobiltelefon wurde horizontal 4 cm entfernt von der Ei-Oberfläche gehalten. Die Eier wurden 21 Tage lang bei 38 ° C ± 1, bei 40-50% Feuchtigkeit und ständiger Dunkelheit bebrütet. Die Bestrahlung erfolgte kontinuierlich während der ganzen Embryozeit (21 Tage). Die Embryonensterblichkeit wurde durch Beleuchten (ev. Durchleuchten) der Eier in 2-Tagesintervallen vom 3. bis zum 13. Tag der Embryonenentwicklung (ED3, ED5, ED7, ED9, ED11 und ED 13) festgestellt. und am Tag des Schlüpfens (ED21).

Jede Versuchsgruppe wurde anhand der Kontrollgruppe begutachtet und es wurden 7 unabhängige Experimente durchgeführt.

Über alles betrachtet, war die M 5 - 6.5 und 3 - 4 mal höher bei der Mobiltelefon und bei den Mobiltelefon + Kupferfilter-Gruppen als bei den Kontrollgruppen. Im Verhältnis zur ganzen Anzahl von toten Embryonen, war die durch die von Mobiltelefon -Strahlung verursachte 47-61% in der Mobiltelefon -Gruppe und 50-59% in der Mobiltelefon +Kupferfilter-Gruppe. In beiden Beispielen überlappten sich die Strahlung und die Sterblichkeitskarten, und die maximale Sterblichkeitsdichte für bestrahlte Embryonen erschien in der Nähe von Mobiltelefonen, die mit der spärlichen Verteilung der Kontrollgruppen konstrastierten.

Die totale Todesrate in der Mobiltelefon + Schutzvorrichtungsgruppe war 2-2,4 mal höher als in den Kontrollgruppen. Die Todesrate , die spezifisch durch die Bestrahlung von Mobiltelefon hervorgerufen wurde, die mit dem Schutz ausgestattet waren, war 13-17%. Währenddessen zeigt die Sterblichkeitsrate eine ziemlich geringe Verbreitung, auf, die mit jener vergleichbar ist, die für die Kontrollen beobachtet wurden.

Zusammen genommen, zeigen diese Resultate auf, dass GSM Mobiltelefon-Strahlung entweder als Ganzes (MW+ELF-Felder oder hauptsächlich beschränkt auf ihre ELF-Komponenten, für Hühnerembryonen toxisch war. Die tödliche Wirkung wurde von der geprüften Schutzvorrichtung gemildert.
