„Remember the Dead – Fight for the Living!”. Aufruf zum Workers Memorial Day in Berlin am 28. April

„Tode – Verstümmelungen – Krankheiten – Vergiftungen – Burnouts – Psychosen – Suizide…

The United States and self-fulfilling prophecies

Nolan Chart
by Michael Maier

04/21/10

About ten years ago, I talked with some of my friends and family and predicted that within the next five to ten years this country would have its Second Civil War or Second Revolutionary War. I have, very much thankfully, been wrong so far. I would rather this never happen, but if the American People cannot put a stop to the government that is spending money like its going out of style and that government manages to stop those who are simply speaking their minds, the violence that the media is talking about could actually happen. And this would be very, very bad for the United States. Free, law abiding citizens don’t appreciate having their rights taken away piece by piece...

An evil monstrosity: Thoughts on the death state

The Power of Narrative
by Arthur Silber

04/20/10

I repeat the fundamental point to make certain there is no misunderstanding as to where I stand on this question: as a political entity, the United States is an endlessly destructive monstrosity. The overwhelming majority of people — including I, regret to say, even many of those who are severely critical of the United States government — fail to understand this point in anything close to the thorough and consistent manner required. This failure is the result of an earlier one: an inability to grasp fully what it means to revere the sacred value of a single human life...

The curse of spending

Campaign For Liberty

You know, there’s a Chinese proverb that says that there are three curses, each one worse than the previous. The first of these curses is: ‘May you live in interesting times.’ Well, the times we live in are certainly interesting. We stand here today at a transformative moment in American history — at the front lines of what can only be called a revolution in thought...

Fueling the Afghan war

The Nation
by Aram Roston

04/21/10

In Napoleon Bonaparte’s day an army may have marched on its belly, as the French emperor famously quipped, but the modern-day American military campaign in Afghanistan needs not just food but also fuel. Diesel for the MRAPs and Humvees, aviation fuel for the planes and helicopters — that’s the fodder for the military surge under way in Afghanistan. Fuel is precious there — they call it liquid gold — and the effort to keep it flowing has created an array of bizarre monopolies, strange alliances and allegations of corruption entangling the US government. This is the story of two interlinked and secretive offshore companies run by a former Army intelligence officer. The firms run a specialized monopoly of massive proportions...

Goldman Sachs and federal fraud

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

04/21/10

Commentators are debating whether the Justice Department will be able to prove its civil fraud case against Goldman Sachs. Unfortunately, they’re missing the point. It brought its suit to get a massive amount of money for the federal government in a pretrial settlement of the case...

The psychiatric drugging of infants and toddlers

The United States has become the psychiatric drugging capital of the world for kids with children being medicated at a younger and younger age. The making of American foreign policy

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

04/21/10

We’re an empire now, and it’s perfectly rational for every state actor in the world who wants something from Uncle Sam to not only show up at the imperial court in Washington and seek the favor of the most powerful ruler in world history, but also to make an appeal to his subjects. Since Congress long ago ceded its war-making and oversight powers to the executive, an American president, once in office, can wreak considerable havoc in the conduct of our foreign affairs. Yet even Caesar operates under certain constraints: i.e. the vicissitudes of domestic politics, which require him to hand out favors to his supporters in order to remain in power beyond the next election. It is safe to say, with certain rare exceptions, that every political leader acts purely out of his own self-interest: that is, with an eye to either achieving political office or else retaining that office once elected. This is merely a restatement of a simple axiom: every ruling class acts to preserve its rule...

Press freedom falls around the world

Christian Science Monitor

04/29/10

The glory days of global press freedom appear to be long past, with a Washington-based freedom watchdog organization finding that a retrenchment of press freedoms continued in 2009. In its annual report on press freedom in the world, Freedom House finds an overall decline for the eighth year in a row — with noticeably negative movement in China, the Middle East, and parts of Latin America. The trend is particularly worrying, advocates say, because press freedom often acts as a kind of bellwether of the direction an array of political and social freedoms are taking. … Press freedom reached new heights in the years following the fall of the Berlin Wall, and not just in states of the former Soviet Union that were expanding freedoms generally...

Government controlled speech on the Internet?

Hawaii Reporter
by Bartlett D. Cleland

04/30/10

Whether it is ‘little punk staffers,’ or talk radio chatter, or the various Tea Party groups, suddenly a chorus of our elected representatives on Capitol Hill is calling such comments or speakers ‘dangerous’ or ’scary.’ Really? Occasionally impolite perhaps, but more likely they just don’t like what’s being said, and then feel free to engage in their own overblown hype undergirded with hubris...

FCC announces plan to seize control of Internet

Business Week

05/05/10

U.S. regulators will claim authority over companies offering Internet access in a setback for AT&T Inc. and Comcast Corp. and a win for Web content providers such as Google Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and EBay Inc. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski plans to say tomorrow that the agency will extend rules used for telephone service to Internet providers, a commission official, who declined to be identified, said today in an e-mailed statement. The agency will pledge to stop short of provisions such as the authority to control rates...

Stand up to the enemies of Internet freedom

Christian Science Monitor

In 2015, 3-1/2 billion people — half of mankind — will have access to the Internet. There has never been such a revolution in freedom of communication and freedom of expression. But how will this new medium be used? What new distortions and obstacles will the enemies of the Internet come up with?

From banning books to banning blogs

Reason
by Bradley Smith & Jeff Patch

05/18/10

The Obama administration has announced plans to regulate the Internet through the Federal Communications Commission, extending its authority over broadband providers to police web traffic, enforcing ‘net neutrality.’ Last week, a congressional hearing exposed an effort to give another agency — the Federal Election Commission — unprecedented power to regulate political speech online. At a House Administration Committee hearing last Tuesday, Patton Boggs attorney William McGinley explained that the sloppy statutory language in the ‘DISCLOSE Act’ would extend the FEC’s control over broadcast communications to all ‘covered communications,’ including the blogosphere...

Meet your new Commander-in-Geek

Reason

05/26/10

On Friday, newly-created U.S. Cyber Command — that’s USCYBERCOM to those in the know — got itself a general. One small problem: It’s not clear that anyone, even four-star general and National Security Agency head Keith Alexander, knows what U.S. Cyber Command is supposed to do now that it exists. The commerical Internet has been around since about 1995, but in recent years folks at the Pentagon and White House seem to have been struck with a similar thought: ‘Hey, we should do something about those Internets, huh?’ The longing for a cyber command of some kind dates back at least to President George W. Bush, and the project continued merrily along under President Barack Obama with the inexorable force of a government program that nobody really wants, but no one wants to be the one to kill...

Shorting the middle class: The real Wall Street crime

Huffington Post
by Arianna Huffington

04/20/10

The press is all abuzz with news of the SEC suing Goldman Sachs for fraud. While this is certainly big news in itself, even more important is what it says about what the financial elite has been doing to America for the last 30 years: shorting the middle class. The SEC’s action is a perfect moment for us to look at the bigger picture of how the American people were sold on the promise of never-ending prosperity while Wall Street was overseeing a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the richest Americans...

John Stossel's Take
by John Stossel

Greedy speculators aren’t to blame. Greed is a constant. Greedy speculators helped create the boom. It was a wonderful boom. The Dow went from 800 to 14,000 in 28 years. (Bet you don’t remember than in 1982, the Dow was as low as 780) Even at Dow 11,000, it has been a great period of growth. Those greedy speculators gave us the iPhone and e-mail and Lipitor. Give regulators more power and we won’t get the next iPhone. It’s nice to wish that we could have an all knowing, benevolent regulator-in-chief, but that’s a pipe dream...

Graceful Decline: The End of Pax Americana

Bankrupt Empire

The FDIC shut down a record 140 banks last year and is running low on cash. Last year the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation figured its fund was running a $34 billion deficit. Federal pensions are underfunded by $1 trillion. State and local retirement funds are short about $3 trillion.

Graceful Decline: The End of Pax Americana

By Christopher Layne

The epoch of American dominance is drawing to a close, and international politics is entering a period of transition: no longer unipolar but not yet fully multipolar. President Barack Obama's November 2009 trip to China provided both substantive and emblematic evidence of the shift.

The death of the American Century: The dream is dying

It was this: a belief that the world has a special love for Americans, for our earnest innocence and gawky immediacy, for our willingness to share the obvious truth and light of democracy with people still struggling in the darkness of history, for our random energy, syncopated music and lopsided, baseball-playing grins.

Schooling Generations in American Exceptionalism

Dallas Darling, Truthout: "'One of the most important aspects of citizenship is to acquire the concept of American Exceptionalism, or the idea that the "United States" and its people differ from other nations ...'(1) It was with these words and this concept: American exceptionalism, that objective five (citizenship requirements) of Texas' social studies curriculum was revised. And if the ultraconservative Texas State Board of Education Review Committee, which consists mostly of wealthy politicians and prominent business leaders, has its way, teaching American exceptionalism to millions of students might just accomplish George Orwell's 1946 axiom: 'From the totalitarian point of view, history is something to be created rather than learned.'"

Nevermind Our Secret Torture Jail, We Killed al Qaida Leaders
