Who's Killing Financial Reform?

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Senator Chris Dodd, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, scolded Wall Street representatives at a hearing Thursday for sending 'an army of lobbyists whose only mission is to kill the common-sense financial reforms' needed by the public. 'The fact is,' Dodd said, 'I am frustrated, and so are the American people.' He charged that Wall Street's intransigence was the reason for Congress's failure to pass any bill to regulate the Street. 'The refusal of large financial firms to work constructively with Congress on this effort borders on insulting to the American people who have lost so much in this crisis.'"

Lobbyists Retreat but Never Surrender

Michael Winship, Truthout: "George Washington's birthday is approaching and with it will come the attendant mythology: hatchet and cherry tree, wooden teeth, throwing a silver dollar across the Potomac River - or the Rappahannock. Of course, as the old joke goes, a dollar went a lot farther then. Today, if you tried to hurl a silver dollar across the Potomac, chances are some member of Congress would snatch it in flight like one of those nature film grizzly bears grabbing a salmon in mid-leap."

Bush, Cheney and the Great Escape

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "With each passing day, it becomes more and more astonishing to encompass the fact that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and their henchmen from the prior administration have managed thus far to escape any accounting whatsoever for the massive battery of criminal activity committed during their time in office."

John Yoo Renews Claim That President's Authority to Torture Depends on What Is "Necessary"

Stephen Rohde, Truthout: "Challenged for his 2005 statement that whether the president could lawfully torture a person's child depends on 'why the President thinks he needs to do that,' undaunted, John Yoo repeated his claim that it would depend on whether the president finds it 'necessary.'"

U.S. headed for another bubble: TARP watchdog

In a sobering 224-page report this week, the federal watchdog responsible for overseeing the $700-billion (U.S.) Troubled Asset Relief Program argued that failed reform could put the United States on course for another bubble - and crash.

Government Propagandists in Corporate Media

When independent journalists challenge US wars, government propagandists attack in the comments.

Emerging from The Media Fog

Stephen Crockett, Truthout: "When we make an investment by buying shares in a corporation, are we endorsing the political goals of corporate CEOs or other corporate executives? For most American citizens, the answer is clearly 'NO!' The recent Supreme Court ruling stating that corporations have the right to spend the shareholders' money to influence federal elections seems designed to trample on the property rights of individual shareholders, empower the international corporate executive class and distort the electoral process in favor of the pro-corporate Republican Party."

Kissinger on Iraq

CounterPunch
by Barry Lando

02/04/10

It is amazing how Henry Kissinger has been able to retain his aura of invincible genius in international relations, continuing to counsel presidents, foreign governments and major global businesses, while occasionally writing lofty Op Ed pieces advising the U.S. on what it should or should not be doing next. This mind you, despite Kissinger’s own history of monumental cynicism and duplicity when he was guiding foreign policy for President’s Nixon and Ford. Indeed, it’s a tribute to the ability of mainstream American media to forgive and forget. The latest example is an Op Ed piece Kissinger just wrote for the New York Times warning American leaders that they are no longer giving Iraq the attention it deserves...

Kissinger's 1974 Plan for Food Control Genocide

The study falsely claimed that population growth in the so-called Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs) was a grave threat to U.S. national security. Adopted as official policy in November 1975 by President Gerald Ford, NSSM 200 outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in those countries through birth control, and also, implicitly, war and famine.

Job losses from Great Recession about to get worse

Portales News-Tribune

02/05/10

Job losses during the Great Recession have been huge and they’re about to get bigger. When the Labor Department releases the January unemployment report Friday, it will also update its estimate of jobs lost in the year that ended in March 2009. The number is expected to rise by roughly 800,000, raising the number of jobs shed during the recession to around 8 million...

A Nation in Decline

by Tom DeWeese

Many politicians are asking the question today: “Why are the American People so angry?” The following may lend a clue to the clueless. According to the annual “Index on Economic Freedom,” produced by the Heritage Foundation, the United States now ranks 8th, just behind Canada. That’s a drop of two full points since last year, and the largest drop of all nations in overall economic freedom.........
