Did Paulson break the law?

Mother Jones
by Nick Baumann

10/20/09

According to a new book on the financial meltdown by New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin, in June 2008, Paulson, who was the chairman of Goldman Sachs before joining the Bush administration, held a secret meeting in Moscow with the board of directors of his former employer. The problem for Paulson — then and possibly now — was that after he had been nominated in 2006 to the Treasury post he had signed an ethics letter vowing to stay clear of potential conflicts of interest with Goldman Sachs and promising not to take any action that might affect the firm’s ability to cover his multimillion-dollar pension...

Bernanke solves the wrong deficit

Our Future Blog
by Eric Lotke

10/19/09

Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke recognized today that America’s trade deficit played a central role in the global economic crisis. Then after he recognized the problem, he went on to solve a different one. Start with the real problem, America’s trade deficit. America is spending more than it earns, and buying more than it’s selling. Our trade deficit in 2008 was $706 billion. We know we’re addicted to oil. We’re also addicted to cheap stuff imported from China (made cheap by devalued currency and near-zero workplace or environmental protections). America’s problem is a huge efflux of dollars, as our wealth departs for foreign lands...

Bernanke housing gamble may bring pressure to extend Fed aid
Bloomberg

11/03/09

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke is gambling that come March, he can stop the purchases of mortgage-backed securities that have propped up the U.S. housing market. Congress may have other ideas. The central bank says it must eventually withdraw its unprecedented economic stimulus to avoid a surge of inflation as a recovery takes hold. Plans to buy $1.25 trillion of housing debt are the centerpiece of its program to pull the nation out of the worst recession since the 1930s. Bernanke, who convenes a meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee today, is counting on private investors to fill the void left by the Fed when its purchases end. If he’s wrong, he may come under pressure from politicians to maintain support for housing or even extend credit programs for small businesses and consumers...

Will street protests become obsolete?

Those who believe Obama wants peace simply do not get it. Those who blame Bush — a man richly deserving hf..., IMO — are closing their eyes to the fact that Obama has merely continued Bush’s war-mongering rights-busting ways. The bottom line … it doesn’t matter whether Bush or Obama are in office; it doesn’t matter whether the President is Republican or Democrat. All governments act to maintain their own power and the greatest threat is always from their own dissenting citizenry. An extreme militarization of police departments has occurred over the past several years and it is criminally naive to believe that this extraordinary state power will not be turned against dissenters...

The Urgent Need to Demilitarize the National Security State

Melvin A. Goodman, Truthout: "The president has addressed the problem incrementally, reducing growth in spending in his first defense budget, establishing a timeline for withdrawal of American military forces in Iraq, returning to arms control negotiations with Russia and supporting international diplomacy in dealing with such problems as Iran's nuclear program."
