Banks face major commercial real estate storm

Pentagon budget must rise to fund current plans

An average of $567 billion would be needed annually, in constant 2010 dollars, from 2011 to 2028, not including any war funding, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated.

Afghan governor turned 3,000 men over to Taliban

You are intelligent people. You have eyes and ears. You know that today is more than a protest of currency based on magic beans and wishful thinking. We are demanding that not one more generation of young people be sent back to their mothers in body bags. We are demanding that not one more dime of fiat currency be used to murder innocent men, women and children with whom we have no quarrel. We are demanding an end to imperialism based on our labor, our treasure...

The Democrats’ war tax

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

Sen. Carl Levin has a solution to the problem of how to finance our losing, futile war in Afghanistan — a war we are fighting to support what has now been officially deemed the second most corrupt government on earth: he wants a war tax. An ‘additional income tax to the upper brackets, folks earning more than $200,000 or $250,000′ a year is what the Michigan Democrat and powerful chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee proposes. His colleagues in the House have the same idea, only their tax is far less ‘progressive.’ David Obey, chairman of the influential Appropriations Committee, John Murtha, who chairs the Defense Subcommittee, and Barney Frank, the banksters’ catamite who heads up the House Financial Services Committee, have proposed the ‘Share the Sacrifice Act of 2010′ — and isn’t that a title worthy of Atlas Shrugged’s mealy-mouthed villains?

Seven big lies about the stimulus

National Review
by Stephen Spruiell

11/24/09

1. Raises = jobs: This one turns out to be pretty common. For example, the Associated Pressreported that one nonprofit in Georgia used stimulus money to give its employees raises, then multiplied its total number of employees (508) by the percentage points of the raises (1.84) and told the White House that the stimulus had saved 935 jobs. (Its directors said they were just following instructions they received from the White House.) Other nonprofits did the same. According to the AP, this fraud exaggerated the number of jobs created or saved by 9,300...

The financial crisis: What we (still) haven’t learned

Acton Institute
by Samuel Gregg

11/18/09

It’s over a year now since the 2008 financial crisis spread havoc throughout the global economy. Dozens of books and articles have appeared to explain what went wrong. They identify culprits ranging from Wall Street financiers overleveraging assets, to ACORN lobbying policy-makers to lower mortgage standards, to politicians closely connected to government-sponsored enterprises such as Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae failing to exercise oversight of those agencies. As time passes, armies of doctoral students will explore every nook and cranny of the 2008 meltdown. But if most governments’ policy responses to the crisis are any guide, it’s apparent that many lessons from the financial crisis are being ignored or escaping most policy-makers’ attention. Here are five of them...

Afghanistan is an unjust, unwinnable war

Campaign For Liberty
by Jake Towne

11/19/09

While Republican Bush II once famously claimed he was ‘the decider,’ the ‘Change We Can Believe In’ promised by his replacement, the Democrat Obama, is hardly any different in regards to the Afghanistan and Pakistan wars. The media and American people breathlessly await the President’s decision on how many troops to send into the war zone. With spines made of jelly, Congress is as toothless as a bunch of newborns as they delegate their responsibilities to represent the American people to a single man. What could they ‘Change’ instead?
