HEALTH fears have put on ice a mobile phone company’s proposals for a mast overshadowing a Perth school and raised concerns over future plans.

Phone giant O2 applied for permission from Perth and Kinross Council to erect a 17.5 metre tall mast within the grounds of the treatment works on Gowans Terrace, just a short distance away from Perth Grammar School.

A member of the Grammar School’s parent council was one of those who stood up at a council meeting this week to object to the planned mast, airing concerns children could be steadily exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.

And Joyce McKay also raised the question of the UK’s lenient standards for siting phone masts close to schools.

NEIGHBOURS are facing a second battle against a mobile telephone mast being put on top of a Headington church.

Vodafone is in discussion with St Michael and All Angels Church, in Jack Straw’s Lane, about using it as a site for a mobile phone mast.

But residents have complained about the lack of information surrounding the safety of the mast.

Four years ago, Hutchison 3G scrapped plans to put a mast on the church because of the level of opposition from local.

THE Auchterarder phone mast tussle entered a new stage this week, after Telefonica 02 asked Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) for the go-ahead to put up a 15m replica telegraph pole and ancillary equipment.

The threat has re-galvanized the anti-mast forces, three years after they managed to keep an Orange mast out – a subsequent appeal overturned PKC refusal but in the event Orange decided not to go ahead.

RESIDENTS in Overslade, Rugby, have reacted angrily to plans to build a 55ft mobile phone mast close to their homes.

People living in the area are also concerned that the mast would be close to four local schools.

Vodafone have submitted plans for a mast close to the junction of
Overslade Lane and Bawnmore Road.

When residents in the nearby area found out they decided to start a petition against the proposals which has been backed by two local councillors.

Graham Townsend, 49, who lives in nearby Arbour Close, said: "Not one person I've spoken to is in favour of this.

"To place a mast so close to four schools seems strange and dangerous. I've read about the health effects and am very worried.

OBJECTIONS have been raised against plans for a new mobile phone mast at Marsden British Legion Club.

Residents are urging Kirklees planners to refuse permission for the O2 mast saying it is too close to homes and children’s play areas.

Their concerns are no doubt valid. Nobody wants an ugly metal pole near their house – and some people feel there are health risks.
