LANDOWNER DEFENDS PHONE MASTS

LAND owner Simon Greenwood has defended the installation of phone masts on a radius of land he owns around Balcombe despite the disquiet of residents.

Mr Greenwood, who lives in London, owns the 3,000-acre Balcombe Estate, which includes forestry, arable and grazing land, numerous houses and farms.

The estate receives annual rent from phone operators for each mast on its land. Fees, as elsewhere, vary from site to site but conservative estimates put each in excess of £5,000 to £6,000 a year.

Altogether in Mid Sussex, planning permission has been given for 79 mobile phone masts since 1996. In cases such as Northlands Avenue in Haywards Heath hundreds of residents opposed a mast opposite a doctors' surgery and near to Northlands Wood School, but despite a concerted campaign a mast was finally approved by a planning inspector.

At a high point in Keysford Lane, Horsted Keynes, objectors won their battle as the site was in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This week Balcombe Parish Council chairman Graham Gosney and district councillor Gary Marsh took the unprecedented step of writing to Mr Greenwood, who is a parish councillor himself, to appeal to him to withdraw his support for a mast on a particularly controversial site.

Why we must fight plan for new TETRA mast

Will this proposed planning application, now at consultation stage, cause uproar in Bognor Regis or will it simmer and die? We shall see as it progresses.

A TETRA mast was removed from the centre of Bognor in May 2004 and in excess of 200 people gradually recovered until two more TETRA masts were put up in neighbouring areas. One at Felpham secretly and a temporary one at Church Norton.

Residents ready for third mast

By Keighley News reporter

Bradley residents look set for their third fight against siting a mobile phone mast in the village.

T-Mobile has submitted plans to Craven District Council to erect a 15ft mast at Sirebank Farm, Jackson's Lane.

The move comes after 600 residents breathed a sigh of relief when Orange's two attempts at siting at mast at Quarry Field were rejected.

Bradley Parish Council brought forward its December meeting to consult on plans and agreed to object as it felt there was insufficient time to review the plans because of Christmas.

The principle of a phone mast was not ruled out, but councillors were concerned about the effect on the landscape and health worries.

Families in phone mast battle

PETER WALSH

23 December 2006 08:28

Families face a fresh battle to stop a mobile phone giant putting up a phone mast near a busy supermarket - just metres from an existing site.

Vodafone has submitted an application to Broadland District Council for permission for an 11.4m mock telegraph pole in Fakenham Road, Drayton, near Budgens supermarket.

The pole, incorporating three shrouded antennas and an equipment cabin, would be close to an Orange mast just 50 yards from the rear of Budgens' car park on Fakenham Road.

Noel Barratt, 65, of Fakenham Road, said he did not want another mast. He said:“I can't see the need for another mast when there's one already there. I can see that from my window and don't want to see another one - we don't want to see the landscape being blotted by them.”

People in the area have fought previous applications for masts. In 2001, the Evening News reported how families won a battle to stop One2One putting up a 10 metre mast just 50 metres from the Orange mast at Budgens.

Norwich North MPDr Ian Gibson supports the Evening News' Put Masts on Hold campaign, which opposes the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe.

He said: “It's like being in a war against these companies - whatever we say, they continue with the onslaught. I hope the people who live around this proposed mast will get together and I am happy to help them (oppose it).”

He said companies should share masts where possible.

No-one was available for comment at Vodafone.

Plans to erect a 3G phonemast in central Newbury are turned down by planning committee

PLANS to construct a mobile telephone mast in central Newbury have been rejected. Hutchinson 3G wanted to put a 12 metre high mast on the junction of Paddock Road and Meadow Road. But the plans were rejected by the West Berkshire Council western area planning committee on Wednesday evening as committee members argued that the proposed development would have an unacceptable impact on the character of the area. District councillors were also concerned about the possible health risks caused by placing a mobile phone mast close to St John the Evangelist Nursery and Infant School.
