Council allows phone mast near school

By Rachel Wareing

Parents have lost their fight to stop a mobile phone mast being built near their children's school.

T-Mobile have been given the green light to build a 15-metre high mast on the Rivervale Cars showroom in Victoria Road, Portslade.

Parents and children from St Mary's Primary School in Church Road protested outside Hove Town Hall before the city council's planning committee met this afternoon.

A petition with 185 signatures was handed to the committee, who also received letters of objection from 13 homes in the area.

But councillors rejected their arguments and voted to grant permission for the mast.

T-Mobile had told the council aerial was needed to boost phone 2G and 3G reception in Portslade.

FCC: “No” to cell phones on planes

MSNBC

04/03/07

Striking a blow for cell phone haters everywhere, a government agency on Tuesday said it will keep a rule in place that requires the divisive devices to be turned off during airline flights. The reasoning behind the decision was technical. But the avalanche of comments the Federal Communications Commission has logged from airline travelers have been nothing short of visceral...

Protesters battle against mast plans

Apr 4 2007

By Will Harris, Crewe Chronicle

ANGRY residents are protesting about plans for a mobile phone mast near to four schools.

A letter has been sent to homes around the suggested site at the junction of Readesdale Avenue and Valley Road in Crewe, highlighting the proposals which will include a 12-metre mast, three antennas, a transmission dish and equipment cabinet at ground level.

Installation company Stappard Howes wants to build it on behalf of telecommunications giants Vodafone, stating that it is the best environ-mental and technical solution.

A petition has been started against the scheme. Cllr Jacquie Weatherill, who lives close to the site in Dane Bank Avenue, said: 'I have already voiced my opinion against this proposal, and a letter has been sent to Stappard Howes. I believe the local schools and residents have written as well.

'This mast would be right in the heart of a residential area, and there are four schools in close proximity. The number of children that might be affected is huge, making it a totally unsuitable site.

'I have taken phone calls and e-mails from concerned residents, while others haven't received the company's correspondence at all. I will continue to fight against this proposal.'

Resident Robert Allen, who lives in Wistaston Avenue added: 'My fear is for kids walking so close on their way to and from school. We have to protect their interests, and if Vodafone submits an application to the council, I'm sure we will all voice our objections.'

A Vodafone spokesman said: 'We are undertaking an extensive consultation before we choose whether to submit an application for planning. It would be inappropriate to indicate a decision on this until the consultation is complete.'

Objections to phone mast

By Jen Rivett

A MOBILE phone giant's application to build an 18-metre-tall mast has sparked anger among residents who claim it will be an eyesore.

Hart District Council is currently considering an application from O2 to build the lattice mast at the gas compound in Reading Road, Hook.

However, residents are concerned that the mast will be an eyesore in their attractive village and many residents have put pen to paper to object to the plans.

Nearby resident Barbara Jones, of John Morgan Close, wrote to the council asking for the mast to be put somewhere less intrusive.

It will only be 50 yards from the bedroom windows of family homes and it will spoil the view
Ernie Hobbs

She wrote: "I reiterate that the adjacent estate - John Morgan Close - is one of the most sought- after residential locations in Hook, according to local estate agents.

"A tall tower on the edge of this development, apart from being aesthetically displeasing to the eye, may well be a source of potential danger to the many young children living on this estate as the effect of exposure to such radio waves is still uncertain."

Beechcrest View resident Ernie Hobbs is organising a letter drop to encourage more people to write to the council.

He said: "It will only be 50 yards from the bedroom windows of family homes and it will spoil the view."

However, Jim Stevenson, O2's communications relations manager, said that the mast had to be 18m tall to supply nearby network-users.

He said: "It prevents us from putting a lot more of these poles around the place. If you have one that's quite high, it prevents us putting four around the area."

Residents have until today to comment on the plans.

Phone mast school fear

Mobile phone giant T-Mobile has launched a bid to install a telephone mast more than 38ft high at a shopping centre in Rugeley.

The company have lodged a planning application with the district council in a bid to get the mast installed at the Fernwood Shopping Centre on Green Lane.

Opponents say it will overlook Western Springs Primary School and should be refused for health reasons.

T-Mobile submitted their plan to the council on March 19 and a decision is likely to be made in the next six weeks.

Under plans the mast, to be 11.7 metres, or 38ft 4in, tall, will be on the car park at Fernwood Shopping Centre.

The installation will involve one monopole supporting three antennae in a shroud with equipment cabinets at ground level and other ancillary apparatus.

Local councillor Mick Grocott, who also sits on the district council’s ruling cabinet, said that he had already been contacted by a number of people worried about the proposal.

Councillor Grocott said: “A lot of local people have come to me about it. A lot of them don’t want something that big in a place like that.

“Some people are worried that until its proven these masts are safe in terms of the radiation from mobile phones then these kinds of masts shouldn’t be put in towns.”

He added: “In my opinion I do think this mast is in the wrong location.

“It is not very far from a primary school and I’m sure there are better sites nearby where it could go.”

Councillor Grocott, who pledged to take his concerns to planning officers at the district council, said: “In my opinion I think it is obtrusive and Fernwood Shopping Centre has its own problems without something like this.

“I don’t think putting a mobile phone mast in the car park will help much at all.”

Residents win mast fight

By Andrew Ffrench

Residents opposing plans for a mobile phone mast near their homes in north Oxford have won their battle after demonstrating outside the city council's planning office.

Last month, home owners demonstrated outside the office, in St Ebbe's, after T-Mobile notified the council it planned to put the 30ft mast outside the Five Mile Drive playing fields, in Cutteslowe.

The Summertown Stars football club, which uses the recreation ground for Oxford Mail Boys League games, also protested against the plans.

Now the city council has backed residents in their fight to persuade T-Mobile to seek an alternative location.

Alan Glanville, of Five Mile Drive, who helped to co-ordinate the campaign, said: "I'm delighted that the council is going to ask T-Mobile to seek a different location.

‘Not every group takes their fight right to the doors of the planning office’
Campaigner Alan Glanville

"Not every group takes their fight right to the doors of the planning office and I'm sure that made the council sit up and take note.

"T-Mobile appear to have dismissed alternative industrial sites out of hand and they need to go away and look at this more thoroughly. Of course, they could appeal against the council's decision, but we hope that doesn't happen."

On Thursday, at the north area committee, councillors will be told that officers are refusing T-Mobile's application for prior approval for the 9.7m monopole on a number of grounds.

According to council officers, the mast is considered to be "unacceptable and inappropriate" for the tree-lined residential street.

They added that insufficient consideration has been given to alternative sites, and that "public health concerns" should be considered.

Jean Fooks, North Oxford city councillor, said: "There was a great deal of concern about this application from residents and T-Mobile is being advised to find a different site."

No-one from T-Mobile was available for comment, but planning consultant Richard Nash told the council earlier that the mast was needed to improve 3G mobile phone coverage.

'We don't want this mast to get higher'

By ALISON BELLAMY

RESIDENTS have launched a campaign to stop the extension of an already huge mobile phone mast blighting their view.

More than 100 people living near the Yorkshire Amateurs Football Club, Chapel Allerton, have sent letters of complaint to Leeds City Council, to say they do not want the 17.5 metre mast to go any higher.

But mobile phone provider O2 Airwaves has applied to extend the mast to 20 metres, which it says will improve the existing network purely for emergency services.

And the company believes its plan is likely to go ahead, as it is vital that emergency services have a clear network.

The cash-strapped football club has in previous years made money from having the masts in the ground, yet today said the latest development had nothing to do with them.

Today David Packham, secretary of the Bracken Edge Ground Company, which owns the club, said: "The new application could not be blamed on the club or owners, because, as far as I understand, it is the mobile phone company which had applied to improve its signal and technology with a larger mast."

But fears for health of local residents and well as players at the Roxholme Road club, has caused locals to object.

Resident Jill Harland, 32, said: "We are concerned about the appearance of a 20m mast. It would be very close to houses and people would see it on a daily basis. It would also spoil views from Gledhow Valley Woods.

"We successfully fought a plan for another mast two years ago and now we have to do it all again."

Chapel Allerton Labour Councillor Mohammed Rafique (Lab, Chapel Allerton) is backing them. He said: "In their latest bid O2 Airwaves want to replace and extend the height of the 17.5m high mast at the nearby Yorkshire Amateur's football Ground to 20m while adding six antennaes and two dishes."

He said that two years ago a campaign by local residents had played an important part in the council turning down O2's application to erect another 25-foot high mast at the site.

The council and Planning Inspectorate cited the damaging impact the mast would have on the aesthetic quality of the area as the main reason to refuse the application.

He added: "Who is to say that if this application is successful O2 might decide they want to enlarge it again in the future?"

Ray Weldon, of O2 Airwaves, said: "The extension is just to improve the resilience of the existing network. It is purely for emergency service use such as police, fire and ambulance and is in the interests of public safety. It is not to expand the network."
