Families have been urged to object to plans for a 6ft mobile phone mast on top of a community hospital roof in Norwich.

Telecommunications giant T-Mobile is to seek permission for the mast at Woodlands House at the Norwich Community Hospital in Bowthorpe Road, Norwich.

But Rupert Read, pictured, a Green city councillor for Wensum ward, is concerned the mast would be near patients at the hospital and their families who visit them.

A MOBILE phone mast approved by default led to Macclesfield Borough Council being hauled before the Local Government Ombudsman.

The council was found to be at fault over the error which led to the mast being put up, because it failed to lodge an objection in the allotted timescale.

The mistake over dates meant that the council lost the opportunity to refuse permission.

Planning consent was refused, but the notice arrived a day late
Telecommunications firm O2 has backed down over plans to build a mobile phone mast after a stand-off with residents.

Workmen had begun preparations to put up the structure on Charlton Road, Keynsham, on Monday, but resident Ruth Taylor stood in their way.

Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES) had refused planning consent for the mast, but failed to tell O2 within the regulation time.

Recent reports from Sweden and France, published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, reveal that adults who have used cellphones for 10 years or more have twice as much brain cancer on the side of their heads most frequently exposed to the phone. The Swiss and Chinese governments have set official exposure limits for cellphone microwave emissions that are 500 times lower than those the United States mandates. In Bangalore, India, it is illegal to sell a cellphone to a child younger than 16. As a basic precaution, people should use the phones with earpieces or speakers, and young children should not use them at all -- consistent with warnings recently issued by the German and British governments. Because brain cancer can take 10 years or longer to develop, national statistics cannot be expected to show the health impact of today's skyrocketing cellphone use. But we shouldn't wait for the cases to roll in before acting.
