PLANNING procedures in Wirral are to be revamped following an investigation into a potentially costly blunder by the authority over phone masts.

Chief executive Stephen Maddox has promised councillors issues raised by an independent report into the blunder will “be embraced”.

A PROPOSED mobile phone mast on a busy St Albans road is dangerous as it will obstruct a speed camera, according to neighbours as well as police.

An equipment cabinet on the eight-metre mast at the corner of Sandpit Lane and Gurney Court Road would obscure images of speeding motorists from a mobile camera van for which a special lay-by has been constructed.

The planning application by Pha Communications Ltd has already been refused by the district council, but the company has appealed.

ANGRY residents in Coalpit Heath are demanding a phone company withdraws a mast application after it failed to notify households near the planned site.

Vodafone has submitted a planning application for a 12 metre high phone mast at the junction of Badminton Road and Woodside Road.

Snazzy new mobile phones like the iPhone and other must-have electronic gadgets, such as the latest laptops and iPod models, will fill many stockings this Christmas. But disposing of the older devices will not be at the forefront of most people's minds.

Around 11,000 tons of unused phones already sit dormant in drawers across the UK, and that figure is likely to rise this Christmas as people upgrade to better devices. Factoring in old laptops, games consoles and portable music players, the environmental implications of celebrating Christmas with a new digital toy start to look ominous, as most of the older electronic products will end up in landfill sites, leaking dangerous chemicals into the earth.
