"There is no need for the use of force. Use of force will lead to very serious consequences in the region and the world," Mubarak said. "The problems must be resolved diplomatically," Gul added.

Threat to U.S. warships may have been a hoax

A threatening radio message at the end of a video showing Iranian patrol boats swarming near U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf may have come from a prankster rather than from the Iranian vessels, the Navy Times newspaper has reported.

Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war

Rational Review
by Michelle L

01/14/08

After watching wall-to-wall coverage in the mainstream media concerning the incident in the Strait of Hormuz between Iranian speedboats and US warships, one would be hard pressed to not experience a feeling of deja vu — the parallels to the Gulf of Tonkin are amazing. For a few days now, the major networks have breathlessly trumpeted the provocative confrontation and reported that ‘US warships were seconds away from firing on the speedboats.’ Everybody panic! Eh, not so much...

Arab Press Reactions To Bush Visit: 'An Absurd, Sadistic Image'

"This black caricature of George W. Bush in (Bahrain capital city) Manama is a fitting conclusion to the Arab tragedy. It's an absurd, sadistic image: the sheikh of Bahrain welcoming his exceptional guest with ... a golden sword -- the symbol of loyalty and submission, meaning: "Bleed me white my lord, if my death pleases you!".

Iran Attacks US Fifth Fleet! American Casualties Reported?

Manufacturing Consent For War With Iran

It is amazing what can be done in a 90-second "news segment." In just 90 seconds, we learn that five small Iranian speedboats have "harassed" and "threatened" a Navy frigate and two Navy destroyers - telling these monstrous military vessels they are about to explode! Explode? All three warships?

Toward Militarism, War, Empire, Caskets, and Bankruptcy

By Jacob G. Hornberger

The incident in the Gulf of Tonkin - excuse me, Gulf of Hormuz - this past week confirms how easy it is for an American ruler to send the entire nation into war, especially given that he is now permitted to ignore the constitutional provision requiring a congressional declaration of war. If the captains of those U.S. battleships and destroyers had blown those Iranian speedboats out of the water, one can already hear Bush and Cheney proclaiming, "We've been attacked! We've been attacked!

Media Did Pentagon's Bidding in Reporting Naval "Provocation" With Iran

Juan Gonzalez, from Democracy Now, interviews historian and national security policy analyst Gareth Porter about the media reporting on the alleged Iranian naval provocation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Legal Mist Stokes US-Iran Tensions in Strait

Kaveh L. Afrasiabi reports for the Asia Times: "Tension spiked markedly last week when Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) speedboats were involved in an 'incident' with three US Navy vessels, which claimed they were international waters. Yet there is no 'international water' in the Strait of Hormuz, straddled between the territorial waters of Iran and Oman."

Bush Mideast Speech Draws Cool Response

Hannah Allam reports for McClatchy Newspapers: "President Bush on Sunday described Iran as the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism and called on Arab allies to help his administration curb the threat 'before it's too late'.... But Bush appears unlikely, based on the regional reaction to his address, to find many Arabs to heed his alarms against Iran, a powerful neighbor and trading partner."

Iran, again: the War Party is pushing us into attacking

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

01/11/08

We were lied into war by the same people who are now trying to sell us their version of an alleged ‘provocation’ — but who are the real provocateurs? Well, we don’t know the answer to that question, but given the track record of our own government, it would hardly come as a shock if it came out that the US version is a complete fabrication. As for the Iranians, no doubt their rather abbreviated clip has been edited to conform to Tehran’s official story, and yet, in the balance of things, theirs is the more credible account...
