Pentagon Divided on Iraq Strategy

Julian E. Barnes reports for The Los Angeles Times: "Ground commanders want to keep a large troop presence but the Joint Chiefs worry about the strain of long tours of duty. The differences carry broad implications for the US role in Iraq."

Five years on: media’s role in Iraq

Christian Science Monitor
by staff

03/19/08

This fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq offers a chance to look at how the US media has portrayed the war. Mostly they have done well, but they’ve also played an unwitting role in the subtle battle to influence public opinion. Despite their best efforts to be credibly neutral and act as the eyes and ears on a distant war, journalists must also contend with efforts by both the Pentagon and insurgents in Iraq to practice what experts call ‘information operations,’ or IO — attempts to sway media reports. … The US government, too, can influence how reporters frame the war’s story line. The press already stands accused of not doing enough before the war to probe the Bush administration’s arguments for the invasion, whether it was Saddam Hussein’s alleged weapons or the prospects of implanting democracy in Iraq. Hollywood has even made movies, such as Redacted, to make up for what it sees as lack of coverage...

Anti-Iraq war U.S. diplomats poorer but proud

Yahoo! News

03/18/08

In 2003, three senior U.S. diplomats abruptly ended prestigious careers and gained international attention by noisily resigning in protest over the U.S. war in Iraq. In interviews on Tuesday on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the invasion, the three said they have lived more modestly without government salaries but the chaos that has followed President George W. Bush’s Iraq policy shows their actions were justified. …. The three former diplomats did not know each other before, but have written a joint opinion article they hope to publish on Wednesday’s anniversary. ”The war happened, with tragic but predictable consequences,” they wrote. “The invasion of Iraq had a terrible impact on America’s relationship with the world.” "Our gesture earned us a brief moment in the media and the cautious respect of our colleagues. Five years later, we do not regret our decision to leave the profession we loved...

Iraq War Protesters Take to the Streets

Michael Ruane, Sue Anne Pressley Montes, and Petula Dvorak of The Washington Post report: "Hundreds of antiwar demonstrators this morning tried to stop workers from entering federal government buildings, sat down in busy streets to block traffic, and staged a 'March of the Dead' parade from Arlington National Cemetery into the District to protest five years of fighting in Iraq."

The Man Who Pushed America to War

Six Questions for Aram Roston

Author of 'The Man Who Pushed America to War'

By Scott Horton

It's common to see Chalabi linked closely to the Neocons who played key roles in the Bush Administration's national security and defense establishment, but you make clear that his key ties with the Republicans lie elsewhere.

The Chalabi Factor in Iraq

By Robert Dreyfuss

The passel of neoconservatives who pushed for war in Iraq in 2003 believed fervently that the war would change the face of the Middle East. How right they were!
