British Ready to Announce Iraq Pullout

Colin Brown, of The Independent UK: "Gordon Brown is ready to override the misgivings of George Bush by going ahead with a major announcement on British troop withdrawals from Iraq. The US President will sit down to talks with Mr Brown today after their dinner at Downing Street last night sparked anti-Bush protests in Parliament Square. Before he arrived at No 10, Mr Bush issued a veiled warning to Mr Brown that now was not the right time to be withdrawing forces from Iraq."

Maliki raises possibility that Iraq might ask U.S. to leave

Iraq has another option that it may use," Maliki said during a visit to Amman, Jordan. "The Iraqi government, if it wants, has the right to demand that the U.N. terminate the presence of international forces on Iraqi sovereign soil."

McCain Should Know Better

Keith Olbermann on MSNBC Countdown: "Finally tonight, as promised, a Special Comment on Senator John McCain's conclusion that it's 'not too important' when American forces come home from Iraq. Thoughts, offered more in sorrow, than in anger."

The death of US strategy in Iraq

Christian Science Monitor
by Robert Dujarric and Andy Zelleke

06/17/08

John McCain has set off a firestorm by suggesting that the timing of the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq is ‘not too important.’ What is important, he said, are the casualties in Iraq, pointing to long-term US troop presence in Japan, South Korea, and Germany. He should be commended for his ’straight talk’ in articulating what he believes, despite its unpopularity. But Senator McCain has yet to give the American people clear answers to three fundamental questions: What, exactly, are the political objectives of keeping large numbers of American soldiers in Iraq for years to come? What plausible outcome would benefit the United States enough to justify the wrenching costs of achieving those objectives? And what, concretely, is the strategy for getting there?

Iraq War becomes suicidal

Common Dreams
by Saul Landau

06/12/08

Throughout the country, communities cope with tens of thousands of U.S. troops returned from Afghanistan and Iraq with blighted bodies and brains. As long as Bush’s wars continue — no candidate has pledged to withdraw all the troops — the country faces a growing collection of veterans, many of whom cannot function in family or work settings. They suffer from war wounds — physical and mental — that require expensive treatment...

Admitting failure

The American Conservative
by Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

Surge supporters say the strategy accomplished its goal of reducing violence. To what end is still unknown. Stateside, the surge provided the Bush administration and its Republican foot soldiers with a valuable grace period, perhaps until the fall elections. For now, Americans are preoccupied with mortgages and miles per gallon. But a growing chorus from the highest echelon of the military suggests the surge was an elaborate farce that stuck a multi-billion-dollar Band-Aid on a gaping wound while escalating the disintegration of the Armed Forces...

Government and Press/Media Cover-Ups

by Dennis Cuddy

Another example involves Iraq. The Bush administration keeps telling us about the success of the military surge. However, it fails to inform the public that after five years in Iraq, there are still water shortages and electricity only 2-5 hours a day. Garbage isn’t collected for days or weeks, and many Iraqi government employees want bribes to provide services........

War, Inc.

By Mike Ferner

Smedley Butler learned that in war "nations acquire additional territory if they are victorious. They just take it." With leasing more in vogue than ever, getting the use of additional territory - call it property -can be more profitable than actually acquiring it. But the end result is the same. "This newly acquired territory is promptly exploited by the few," Butler explained, "the self-same few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill."
