A U.S. soldier testified Thursday that he was ordered to shoot an unarmed Iraqi man, then his sergeant, from North Carolina, laughed and told the trooper to finish the job as the man convulsed on the ground.

Blackwater Logs Most Shootings of Firms in Iraq

John M. Broder and James Risen, of The New York Times, report "the American security contractor Blackwater USA has been involved in a far higher rate of shootings while guarding American diplomats in Iraq than other security firms providing similar services to the State Department, according to Bush administration officials and industry officials. Blackwater is now the focus of investigations in both Baghdad and Washington over a Sept. 16 shooting in which at least 11 Iraqis were killed. Beyond that episode, the company has been involved in cases in which its personnel fired weapons while guarding State Department officials in Iraq at least twice as often per convoy mission as security guards working for other American security firms, the officials said."

Democratic Frontrunners Offer No Guarantees to Withdraw Troops

Beth Fouhy, of The Associated Press, reports: "the leading Democratic White House hopefuls conceded Wednesday night they cannot guarantee to pull all US combat troops from Iraq by the end of the next presidential term in 2013. 'I think it's hard to project four years from now,' said Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the opening moments of a campaign debate in the nation's first primary state. 'It is very difficult to know what we're going to be inheriting,' added Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. 'I cannot make that commitment,' said former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina."

Tough talk, but little punch

Boston Globe
by Derrick Z. Jackson

09/26/07

Last November, Nancy Pelosi proclaimed, ‘The American people spoke with their votes and they spoke for change and they spoke in support of a new direction for all Americans … nowhere was the call for a new direction more clear from the American people than in the war in Iraq.’ Pelosi, who would become speaker of the House as the Democrats regained the majority in both the House and the Senate, continued, ‘We know that “stay the course” is not working. It has not made our country safer, it has not honored our commitment to our troops, and it has not brought stability to the region. We must not continue on this catastrophic path . . . The American people with their votes yesterday placed their trust in the Democrats. We will honor that trust. We will not disappoint … Democrats are ready to lead. We’re prepared to govern’...

Another Iraq war spending showdown looms

Johnson City Press

09/26/07

President Bush and Congress are headed toward another showdown on war spending, this time sparring over nearly $190 billion the Pentagon says is needed to keep combat in Iraq afloat for another year. Sen. Robert Byrd, chairman of the Appropriations Committee, vowed Wednesday not to ‘rubber stamp’ the request and said it was time to put Bush’s policies in check...
