An Arid West No Longer Waits for Rain

A Western drought that began in 1999 has continued after the respite of a couple of wet years that now feel like a cruel tease. But this time people in the driest states are not just scanning the skies and hoping for rescue. Preparing for worst-case outcomes, the seven states that draw water from the Colorado River - Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico in the upper basin and California, Arizona and Nevada in the lower basin - and the United States Bureau of Reclamation, which manages the river, are considering plans that lay out what to do if the river cannot meet the demand for water. Some experts predict that prospect will occur in about five years.

183 Millionen statt 24 Milliarden Tonnen Steinkohle

Is Earth Near Its "Tipping Points" From Global Warming?

Earth is spinning toward many points of no return from the damage of global warming, after which disease, desolation and famine are inevitable, say scientists involved in an international report due Friday. Opinions vary about how long it will take to reach those "tipping points" and whether attempts to cut planet-warming gases churned out by power plants, vehicles and other human activities can slow, halt or reverse the harmful effects in coming decades. Some suggest it might be cheaper for society to adapt to the changing climate than to roll back the pace of warming.

Scientists Warn on Climate Tipping Points

Alok Jha reports for The Guardian UK: "Some tipping points for climate change could be closer than previously thought. Scientists are predicting that the loss of the massive Greenland ice sheet may now be unstoppable and lead to catastrophic sea level rises around the world."

Seafood Poisoning Rises as Oceans Become Warmer, More Polluted

Dozens of popular fish types, including grouper and barracuda, live near reefs. They accumulate the toxic chemical in their bodies from eating smaller fish that graze on the poisonous algae. When oceans are warmed by the greenhouse effect and fouled by toxic runoff, coral reefs are damaged and poison algae thrives, scientists say. "Worldwide, we have a much bigger problem with toxins from algae in seafood than we had 20 or 30 years ago," said Donald M. Anderson, director of the Coastal Ocean Institute at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.
