WHO Denies Link Between Swine Flu Vaccine and Illnesses, Deaths

New evidence of vaccine side effects, and growing reluctance of the public to accept this vaccine, is resulting in many of them not being used.

EU legalisiert Genkontamination

Obama’s plan to “spend our way out of this recession”

FreedomWorks
by Matthew Clemente

12/08/09

This morning, President Obama held a press conference to outline his second multibillion dollar stimulus proposal. Unlike the administration’s $787 billion ’stimulus’ bill which has fallen short of its goal to ’save or create’ millions of jobs, this proposal aims to really ’save or create’ jobs. And, as is to be expected from the Obama White House, the plan to solve the problem that $787 billion in spending could not fix is to throw even more taxpayer money at it...

Moody’s tells US: Put your financial house in order

Main Street Radical
by James

12/08/09

On the eve of Obama’s trip to Denmark, in which he may announce new spending plans for developing countries, Moody’s is poised to send a warning that America’s triple-A credit rating is at risk. For generations the country has relied on deficit spending and the strongest credit rating to manage the country’s finances. This new chink in our fiscal armor is a direct result of the fact that our government faces a trillion dollar deficit for the next 10 years, and sends a clear message that Congress, the President and the American people must rein in deficit spending. A reduction in America’s credit rating can only lead to higher interest rates as the Treasury will have to make our debt more attractive to lenders...

More easy money for Wall Street

The Nation
by William Greider

12/08/09

The sales pitch for financial-reform legislation pending in the House claims it would put an stop to ‘too big to fail’ bailouts for the leading banks. The reality is the opposite. The federal government would instead be granted unlimited authority to spend whatever it takes to prop up the big boys when they get in trouble. Only in the next crisis, Congress won’t have to be asked for the money. The financial rescues will be funded by the secretive Federal Reserve, not the Treasury, with money the Fed itself creates. And the emergency lending could be pumped into any financial institution in trouble. … This sounds nutty and it is. A permanent security blanket for big boys of finance will further inflame public opinion. Only the public isn’t likely to know...

US homeowners lost $5.9 trillion since 2006 peak

Bloomberg

12/09/09

U.S. homeowners have lost about $5.9 trillion in value since the housing market peak in March 2006 as mounting foreclosures and the recession weighed on prices, according to Zillow.com. Almost half a billion dollars was wiped out this year through Nov. 30, as the market headed for a third straight annual decline. New foreclosures and higher mortgage rates in 2010 may hinder a rebound, the property data service said today in a statement...

So much for the peace presidency

Cato Institute

12/08/09

This Thursday, Barack Obama will swing by Oslo to pick up the Nobel Peace Prize — just over a week after he announced that he’d escalate the war in Afghanistan. Awkward. When Obama won the prize in October, you had to wonder whether the self-esteem movement, where every kid gets a trophy, had made its way from little league to the Nobel Committee. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr. — and a guy running two wars, who’d been president for two weeks when nominations closed?

Over the past couple of days, Andrew Sullivan has linked to and published protests from various individuals who are quite angry that people ‘on the left’ are being so mean to President Obama, and several of them are so upset that they have decided they are ‘leaving the left,’ whatever that might mean. What’s most striking about these valiant defenses of Obama is how utterly devoid they are of any substantive points and how, instead, suffuse with weird, even inappropriate, emotional attachments they are. These objections are grounded almost exclusively in (a) a deep-seated conviction that President Obama is a good and just man who means well; (b) their own rather intense upset at seeing him criticized; and (c) a spitting ad hominem fury of the type long directed by Bush followers at any critics of their leader, and generally typical of authoritarian attacks on out-groups critics...

The spending wars

When Rep. David Obey, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, recently proposed a surtax that would pay for the Afghanistan War, the collective response from most of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle was, ‘Are you nuts?’ Nancy Pelosi quickly put the kibosh on Obey’s ‘Share the Sacrifice Act,’ and all talk of funding the war has been banished. Meanwhile, Democrats have spent untold hours debating how to finance health-care reform, all while Republicans carp about how doing so is just too darn expensive, what with our ever-climbing deficit. We’ve become used to this contradiction in Washington. Wars just need to be fought; the defense budget just needs to keep growing; and we don’t really care what it costs...

How is it that coverage of the healthcare reform debate has now moved off the front pages of two of our country’s major newspapers and has been reduced to nothing more than a brief summation in today’s editions of The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times? With healthcare accounting for somewhere between one sixth and one seventh of our total economy, a weekend of Senators debating reform and the topic front and center as one of the major concerns cited by voters, it is amazing that the story is not at the top of the headlines. Five good reasons to avoid a war with Iran

Campaign For Liberty
by Philip Giraldi

12/07/09

As America’s founding fathers clearly understood war is a serious business and should only be engaged in when there is a threat to vital national interests. The US Constitution stipulates that there must be a declaration of war from congress, a safeguard inserted in the document to prevent presidents from going to war without a clear national consensus behind them. Nevertheless, even though the federal government has fought many wars in the past hundred years only two were preceded by an actual declaration by Congress, World War I and World War II. Every other war has been both illegal and unconstitutional, including the current involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan, and on various fronts in the so-called global war on terror...

The real reason for drilling

Fox Business News

Today, the President is set to announce his new energy plan which includes allowing oil drilling off Virginia’s shoreline – a reversal of a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling: White House officials pitched the changes as ways to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign oil and create jobs — both politically popular ideas — but the president’s decisions also could help secure support for a climate change bill languishing in Congress. I applaud the President’s willingness to finally allow some drilling off America’s coasts but, let’s be honest: this is not going to make a dent in our ‘reliance’ on foreign oil. We consume 20 million barrels per day, and produce only 5. We could drill everywhere that we’re not allowed and we’d probably only goose production up to 6 million...

The Reason for 15 Million Unemployed: Poor Thinking at the Top

Dean Baker, Truthout: "The United States has more than 15 million people unemployed. This is not their fault. It is the fault of really bad policy decisions by people who get paid more than almost all of the unemployed ever did or ever will. The failure of economic policymakers to recognize and attack an $8 trillion housing bubble led to the downturn. The continuing failure of economic policymakers to think creatively is why 15 million people remain unemployed."

The Psychological Implosion of Our Soldiers

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "'The ground has been laid for another crisis, another shooting ... it's volatile here, nothing has been resolved,' Luther told Truthout from his home in Killeen, Texas, on the outskirts of Fort Hood. 'The average Joe on the street thinks things are resolved here, but they are anything but resolved. We are primed to have more soldier-on-soldier violence if something doesn't change right away.'"

Is US Prepared to Care for More Casualties From Troop Buildup?

David Goldstein, McClatchy Newspapers: "As the Obama administration ramps up the war in Afghanistan, veterans advocates say the government must develop a better plan to handle the wounded when they come home. Eight years of war have overtaxed the health care systems that treat service members and veterans, several said, and President Barack Obama's decision to deploy 30,000 to 35,000 more troops in Afghanistan will compound the stress."

Veterans Group Calls On Soldiers to Refuse Orders to Deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "In response to President Barack Obama's announcement on December 1 to deploy 30,000 additional troops to the occupation of Afghanistan, the organization March Forward!, with comprising both veterans and active-duty members of the US military, has called on all soldiers to refuse their orders to deploy. 'March Forward! calls on all service members to refuse orders to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq,' reads a press release from the group from December 3. 'We offer our unconditional support and solidarity. Join us in the fight to ensure that no more soldiers or civilians lose their lives in these criminal wars.'"

DOJ Watchdog Report on Yoo, Bybee Torture Memos to be Released Soon, Agency Spokeswoman Says

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Last month, Attorney General Eric Holder told lawmakers in testimony before Congress that a long-awaited Justice Department watchdog report that is said to be highly critical of the legal work three attorneys who worked at the agency's powerful Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) conducted for the Bush administration on torture will be released at the end of the November."

White House wants suit against Yoo dismissed

The Obama administration has asked an appeals court to dismiss a lawsuit accusing former Bush administration attorney John Yoo of authorizing the torture of a terrorism suspect, saying federal law does not allow damage claims against lawyers who advise the president on national security issues.

The Bush-Obama War

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

Now it's Barack Obama's war. After campaigning against "George Bush's War" in the Middle East, Obama has escalated that war. By transferring thousands of America's forces from Iraq to Afghanistan, and by sending an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, the liberal Democrat has demonstrated that his administration is not so different from that of his "conservative" Republican predecessor. While I was crisscrossing America during the campaign season last year, I repeatedly........

Meanwhile...

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "Ever since President Obama's speech last Tuesday, all media, political and public attention has been focused exclusively on the war in Afghanistan. The president mentioned Iraq a few times in the speech, mostly to blame that situation for the situation in Afghanistan. At one point, however, he seemed to be making the shocking claim that the war in Iraq has been a success. 'We have given Iraqis a chance to shape their future, and we are successfully leaving Iraq to its people,' he said. Hm."

Best performance in a farce

Within the last 11 months, while 500 coalition soldiers have perished and thousands have been wounded on the battlefields of Afghanistan, the Obama administration has treated the rest of us to an elaborate, Oscar-worthy performance of how to act in charge from the back seat of a car. In other words, instead of approving the tens of thousands more in reinforcements military leaders said they needed to win right away, the president spent most of 2009 trying to look deliberative and in charge — and pleasing no one. Turns out the escalation was hardwired from the beginning. He’ll do what the military wanted all along. It makes one wonder which is worse — the escalation itself, or leaving the operation foundering in virtual limbo for a year while this kabuki theater ran its course...

The march of folly

CounterPunch
by Patrick Cockburn

It will be a long and unnecessary war. President Obama is sending 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan to prove that the US can impose its will on the country and crush by military means what is still a relatively small scale insurrection. The real reasons for escalating the conflict are very different from those declared by Mr Obama...
